  • ISANA NZ to launch micro-course on student experience

    The six-week online course will provide international education practitioners with key strategies and skills for supporting international students remaining in New Zealand and offering wraparound support for new students entering the country.

    Established in 2001, ISANA: International Education Association NZ Inc is a member organisation that seeks to professionalise international education in New Zealand by offering professional development opportunities and creating a network of international education staff.

    ISANA NZ has worked closely with ENZ and other Government agencies during the 2020 COVID-19 response, with a focus on student wellbeing.

    “It is clear to us that specialist skills will be essential for effective wraparound support for international students and sustainable practice in a COVID-19 era. There is a need for a step-change in the professionalisation of practice to facilitate sector recovery,” ISANA NZ Executive Director,Chris Beard, says.

    The International student experience micro-course is the first digital training opportunity ISANA NZ have developed. It usually runs in-person workshops; this micro-course was designed to comply with COVID-19 health guidelines.

  • ENZ Agent Seminars in China make a strong impact for rebuilding connections

    China is the largest source of international students for New Zealand with agents being the leading channel for student recruitment in this market. Building strong connections between providers and agents in China is critical to recovering student mobility, improving awareness of New Zealand as a study destination and strengthening New Zealand's market position. ENZ's Agent Seminars in China are a well-recognised and impactful way of building relationships with a range of key agents.

    In addition, Agent Seminars also help to keep agents informed with the latest official information and is an important tool that Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and other NZ Inc agencies use to share such information. According to recent Immigration New Zealand (INZ) data, agents in China have a high approval rate for student visa processing.   

    Currently, ENZ runs its Agent Seminar series twice a year in this region and this latest series of events held in Chengdu, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing were supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and INZ. INZ’s China-based representatives gave in-person presentations, an initiative which was well received with 88% of agents reporting its inclusion as “very or extremely important to their attendance in a post-event survey.

    To leverage the visibility of New Zealand education providers in the China market, ENZ facilitated media interviews and social media recordings for participants at the Shanghai and Chendgu Seminars. New Zealand providers and ENZ representatives in Chengdu conducted interviews with 13 journalists, the highest response rate for media attending Agent Seminars to date. As a result, three million views were achieved from 58 stories published by 27 local media outlets, with New Zealand university representatives quoted in a media story and an exclusive interview and story for Te Pūkenga on the uniqueness of New Zealand's vocational education in a separate article.

    In Shanghai, the ENZ Shanghai team delivered a China marketing insights session for sector representatives. The presentation titled “Unlocking China’s Education Market: Insights and tools for successcovered:  

    • The key drivers of the consumer 

    • China’s media/digital/social media landscape​ 

    • The big four – WeChat, Little Red Book, Douyin and Bilibili (case studies included) 

    • ENZ’s China local marketing plan​.

    ENZ collaborated with Shinyway, the largest agent in the eastern region of China to produce short videos for the agency to promote online. The online promotion aimed to leverage brand awareness of a New Zealand education showcasing New Zealand providers attending the Shanghai eventA big kudos goes to the 18 brave New Zealand representatives who accepted the invitation to participate in the filming. Education Counsellor and Regional Director Greater China, Michael Zhang, was also interviewed to present the advantages of a New Zealand education and our institutions across all sectors. 

    Shinyway has published all the videos on their consumer-facing social media platforms, including WeChat, Little Red Book, and Weibo. The collaboration enhances New Zealand providers’ market exposure by leveraging Shinyway's influence across their digital platforms and reaching prospective audiences in China elevating our brand profile within a highly targeted audience group.

    87.5% of New Zealand education providers also said that attendance at the seminars was either very valuable or valuable for their organisation.”

  • Joint initiative supports school group visits

    To make the most of every opportunity to grow international education in schools across the country, Education New Zealand (ENZ) and the Schools International Business Association (SIEBA) have established a ‘clearing house’ for school student group visits.

    There is increasing interest from such groups in visiting New Zealand, particularly from Japan, China, Thailand and Korea. Schools aren’t always able to accommodate these visits however, so ENZ and SIEBA are working together to channel the enquiries through a clearing house that aims to say ‘yes’, as a starting point, to any request. The clearing house then works behind the scenes with its members to identify schools that are keen (and have the capacity) to host, determine appropriate pricing for the visit, and ultimately improve the experience of, and bring efficiencies to, group visits to New Zealand.

    ENZ is promoting the SIEBA clearing house service to its in-market networks, including agents and schools who are considering New Zealand as a destination for school group visits.

    The service is another ‘value add’ by SIEBA and is free to its members. If you are a school (irrespective of whether or not you are a SIEBA member) that receives requests to host a group but is unable to, ENZ asks that you forward the request on to SIEBA.   • New Zealand a ‘dream’ destination for German students

    Olga was accompanied by IEC Online’s Marketing Coordinator, Carolin Stechel.

    “Our overall goal was to raise the profile of New Zealand as a study destination across Germany, and to promote the Dream NEW scholarships,” said Olga.

    The pair visited the Universities of Mannheim, Paderborn, Mainz and Potsdam.

    There was strong interest among the students, not only for the education offerings at New Zealand universities and ITPs but also for New Zealand and its lifestyle.

    “It was fantastic to see that many students had already been to New Zealand, either during their high school years or for a gap year after high school.

    “The fact that they are keen to spend a semester in New Zealand during their university time shows their great passion for the country, and the strong ties they have with New Zealanders.” 

    The webinar enabled Olga and Carolin to connect with students from all over Germany, and students who attended the workshop at the embassy had the chance to talk to the ambassador, HE Rodney Harris.

    “In general, it was clear that there is great interest in New Zealand and the country is perceived as a ‘dream destination’ by German students,” said Olga.

    However, as education in Germany is free, the international tuition fees tend to discourage many students from choosing New Zealand as a study destination.

    “Given this situation, it was a perfect opportunity for us to promote the Dream NEW scholarships that cover the full tuition fees for one semester.

    “The students were excited about this opportunity and asked many questions about the application criteria, timing, and so on.”

    “All in all, it was a perfect mix of activities to reach out to a large number of German students and promote New Zealand as a high-quality and safe study destination.”

    What’s on offer at NZIEC 2018?

    NZIEC 2018 centres on the theme of Inspiring Global Citizens, and how we can leverage our international education activity to foster global citizenship across the diverse communities of New Zealand.

    We’ll kickstart conference by exploring how we can have global impact from New Zealand with our Inspire Keynote Speaker Yoseph Ayele, Chief Executive of the Edmund Hillary Foundation.

    The digital journeys of international students will be under the microscope by Dr Shanton  Chang from the University of Melbourne. Dr Chang will share his surprising insights into the online behaviours of international students as they move across countries.

    We’ll investigate what our industry can learn from Xero’s Anna Curzon as she outlines how we can develop partnerships for global success. The Xero experience in developing partnerships with customers, partners and others has helped make it Forbes’ Most Innovative Growth Company for two consecutive years.

    We’re also bringing the international student voice into our plenary sessions with international students talking to delegates about their experiences living and studying in Aotearoa. We anticipate this will provide interesting and heartfelt life stories that delegates can reflect upon.

    Programme format changes

    This year, we’ve put back-to-back complementary breakout sessions together into 1hr 20-minute sessions. While you are still free to sneak between sessions, we hope this format will help reduce the amount of time you have to spend navigating around the venue and allows you time to really focus on a particular theme. 

    We’ve also staggered the timing of our pre-lunch breakout sessions, with some starting 15 minutes earlier than others to help reduce those dreaded lunch queues. 

    Pre-conference workshops

    Remember to check out the pre-conference workshops offered by our programme partner, AFS New Zealand. These workshops are a great way to grapple with global competence in an in-depth way prior to conference kicking off the following morning. You can register for these breakouts direct with AFS or during registration.

  • Summer in NZ

    The student retention workstream, a key focus of the Government’s Recovery Plan for international education, has delivered new resources, partnerships and online activity to support international students (and providers) over summer.

    Alongside the Summer in NZ initiative, ENZ has been facilitating Instagram Live sessions on social media focused on the themes of wellbeing, employability, skill development and keeping students connected with one-another. For the schedule, visit the Summer in NZ page on the ENZ website, and watch on the StudyinNewZealand Instagram account (@studyinnewzealand). Further sessions will continue over summer.

    A Tencent livestream with the theme of how to spend your summer in New Zealand was hosted by students on the NauMai NZ WeChat mini programme. Another two upcoming livestreams in the new year will feature how Chinese students are spending their summer and celebrating Chinese New Year in New Zealand.

    ENZ has also partnered with LinkedIn and secured a number of LinkedIn Learning licences. We are now offering these to international students, via providers, free of charge to use over the summer period. This platform is used by education providers across the world to complement their existing courses.

    ENZ has also been working with AFS New Zealand to deliver the Global Competence Certificate. The first course facilitated by Massey University began at the end of November.     New NauMai NZ pages, developed in conjunction with providers and regional networks, have been added to NauMai NZ (under Summer in NZ), providing advice and information on activities and opportunities to engage and connect students over summer. Students whose programmes are finishing this year are also being encouraged to consider further programmes of study in New Zealand.

    The Your Great Kiwi Summer Fair was held at the end of October. The audience was highly engaged, with initial feedback reporting that the fair was a useful source of information. Feedback will help inform future events with international students in New Zealand.

    Since the fair, Northland Inc and Study Auckland have launched BeKiwi, a one-stop digital platform for international students looking for travel and volunteering experiences in the Northland and Auckland regions.

    We understand this summer will be a very different one for many international students. We thank you for your support and encourage you to continuing sharing this information and these resources with them, as we stand together with our international students to make the most of their time here.

  • University launches global brand

    The focused work to create Massey University Worldwide was supported by $150,000 funding through Education New Zealand, as part of the government’s strategic initiatives to increase the volume of offshore education delivery by New Zealand providers.

    The new brand was launched in Wellington on 25 February, at a function including the representatives of 11 embassies.

    Massey University Worldwide aims to connect and expand the institution’s existing distance learning and transnational activities, which have included partnering with the Singapore government on food technology training, delivering postgraduate programmes for the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, and a blended programme for South Asian veterinarians and public health professionals.

    Vice-Chancellor Steve Maharey says Massey University Worldwide is a natural extension for Massey.  As one of the first universities in the world to launch distance and online learning, Massey has developed strong relationships around the world over many years.

    He says the work to create a strong brand for transnational education came in response to “rapidly growing demand for high quality programmes delivered by internationally focused universities in the student’s own country”.

    “Massey University Worldwide expands our teaching and research activity internationally helping to secure tertiary education as a major export earner for New Zealand.”

    Programmes the university aims to grow under the brand’s umbrella include high quality niche offerings in Massey’s key areas of expertise such as agriculture, business studies, emergency management and design. The university will further develop online programmes to align with international student’s current requirements, making use of emerging technology and delivery platforms such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), as well as working with New Zealand businesses based offshore to build capability, and to bid for more internationally funded research.

    Mr Maharey says it’s exciting to be working at the heart of transformational change in New Zealand’s education industry.

  • Immigration New Zealand closes Hamilton public counter

    This is part of Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) move to phase out paper applications in favour of online applications.

    The Hamilton office and public counter (level 5 Westpac House, Cnr Victoria and Alma Streets) closed on Friday 11 August 2017. INZ is encouraging students to use its online services.

    However, paper applications can still be sent directly to the addresses provided on the INZ website here.

    For any enquiries or urgent assistance, students should contact the INZ contact centre on 0508 55 88 55. The centre has qualified staff who can help with enquiries, including staff with language skills to help where English is a second language.

    In instances where a face-to-face service is necessary, INZ will arrange an appointment with an Immigration Officer.

    Please note that an INZ counter in Palmerston North is also set to close in early September.

  • Students around the globe join New Zealand summit

    Kicking off this week with seminars on the space economy and mechanisms for social change, and the human cost of climate change, the online global workshop connects a diverse group of potential international students to help them connect, collaborate and shape their future.

    ENZ’s Deanna Anderson, Business Development Manager says the project offers ENZ a great opportunity to learn more about the motivations of learners from new markets while offering the students involved a unique digital engagement with New Zealand.

    “It’s a two-way learning experience that explores the futures of our next generation of learners while offering them a window into New Zealand’s unique way of problem solving.

    “The aim is to create an inspiring initiative that engages hundreds of students and allows us to use their insights to better understand the future of our next generation of learners.

    “Each student has the ability to offer insight that could help shape a more personalised, meaningful, relevant and uniquely New Zealand education experience.” 

    The summit involves 12 expert speakers who are presenting six online seminars on topics ranging from sustainable design to social entrepreneurship to climate change.

    “After the seminar series, the students will be involved in a co-creation weekend where they will work as part of 65 online challenge groups to discuss solutions to some of the planet’s most pressing issues such as energy production, waste as a resource and the future of human survival.”

    Deanna says this pilot research project will provide invaluable insights for New Zealand’s international education sector that will inform the direction of future industry innovation.
