Innovation at Festival for the Future
This annual event showcases leadership and innovation, and seeks to amplify rangatahi and minority voices, to demonstrate leadership around topics such as climate action, diversity and inclusion, and sustainable development.
More than 30 speakers took part, attracting more than 1,000 participants across New Zealand, as well as online participants around the world.
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) promoted the Prime Minister's Scholarships for Asia and Latin America and ENZ's mahi in global citizenship more broadly.

Former Prime Minister’s Scholar for Asia, Young New Zealander of the Year, and co-founder of Aotearoa’s first Māori owned electricity company, Ezra Hirawani, was one of the opening keynote speakers. Ezra spoke about the importance of global citizenship, what it means for him as a Māori New Zealander and how it can be used to address the issues of our lifetime.
In addition to partnering with Inspiring Stories Trust as a sponsor of the Festival, ENZ supported the Global Impact Award. Courtney Davies, a young New Zealander leading environmental programmes for young people across New Zealand and Africa, with a focus on sustainable change and action, received this year’s award.

Haere rā to Brazilian students
Farewell events for the students have been held around the country, to demonstrate our appreciation of this opportunity, and contribute to the students’ memories of New Zealand. The events also provided an opportunity for diplomats from both countries, and local government representatives to demonstrate the value of international education in building global connections and long-term relationships.
Events included a sailing trip with Maritime New Zealand, Māori performances, outdoor experiences, and museum tours, organised by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) alongside regional development agencies.
Final farewells from students and their supporters in New Zealand and Brazil.
The final farewell event was online, and included New Zealand Ambassador to Brazil Richard Prendergast, Henrique Choer Moraes, Minister-Counsellor at the Brazilian Embassy in Wellington, and Mr. Roni Miranda Vieira, Director of Education from the Education Secretariat of Paraná state speaking with the students and hearing about their experiences, alongside others involved with the trip.

ENZ’s Market Development Manager in Brazil, Bruna de Natale, says this was the first big group of students to come to New Zealand after our borders reopened.
“We had all been waiting eagerly for New Zealand’s borders to open again so this programme could get underway after almost two years, and I know the Kiwi schools involved were very excited to welcome these students. It was good to hear about the special memories the students will take home from their trip, including how much they learned. For most students, this was their first international experience and for many of them, being in a multi-cultural class in New Zealand was a very different experience from home.
“We hope that the students will stay connected to New Zealand and that this experience will be a good basis and incentive for them to explore further international study options in the future – who knows, we might welcome them back to New Zealand someday, that would be lovely!”
The study programme is fully funded by the Paraná Government, through Paraná’s Secretary of Education and Sport, and is expected to continue next year for around 2,000 students. We hope that some of them will be able to come to New Zealand.

Join us for the Latin America Study with New Zealand Virtual Fair
“The fair will be a great opportunity for providers to connect with prospective students in the Latin American market, using an interactive digital platform,” says Javiera Visedo, Director of Engagement Latin America for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ).
“ENZ is seeking expressions of interest in the fair, which we are hosting in collaboration with FPP. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the Expression of Interest form by 9 December 2022.”

Key areas of focus for ENZ in Latin America include Brazil, Colombia and Chile, and we have staff based in São Paulo and Santiago.
Close to 6,000 international students came to New Zealand from Latin America in 2019, and Brazil is our eighth largest market. Since the pandemic there has been intense activity from our competitors with many of them establishing in-country representatives, which demonstrates the importance of this region in international student recruitment.
Beyond student recruitment, ENZ also values the government and education connections with the region.
ENZ recently hosted a series of Latin America Masterclasses, which saw participants from around Latin America tuning in to watch live lectures delivered by New Zealand academics.
In June this year, Education Minister Chris Hipkins created great buzz with his visit to Brazil and Chile, part of his first international trip since the beginning of the pandemic.
Group recipients of the Prime Ministers’ Scholarships for Latin America have recently started making their way to Brazil, Colombia and Chile to participate in short study exchanges. These include several Māori led groups, supporting connections with indigenous nations in the region.
In September, ENZ attended the FPP Virtual Fair in Colombia. The fair had more than 800 visitors, with over 100 visiting the ENZ booth. There was strong interest in tertiary programmes and language studies. The virtual fair was a great opportunity to promote New Zealand as a study destination within the Latin American market.
A group of 100 high school students from Paraná State in southern Brazil had a three-month study experience this year with schools in Auckland, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, Wellington, Canterbury and Invercargill.
Brazil
In 2019, there were 3,324 Brazilian students studying in New Zealand. Being from non-English speaking countries, the majority of Latin American students will start their education experience in New Zealand studying English. Scholarships offered by the local state governments have also contributed to the presence of Brazilian students in New Zealand and in 2022, 100 students from the state of Parana in Brazil travelled to New Zealand on a 3-month exchange. The students were placed at high schools across the country and gave positive feedback about their time here.
Colombia
Colombia is New Zealand’s second largest market in Latin America, second only to Brazil. In 2019, there were 1,360 Colombian students studying in New Zealand.
In 2023, 22 students from Bogotá, Colombia, will travel to New Zealand to study during terms one and two. Most of the students will be based at schools across the North Island, with one group heading down to Nelson.
On 23 November 2022, ENZ launched the I AM NEW campaign in Spanish at an event in Bogotá, to promote a New Zealand education.
Chile
The recent CAPE LatAm ‘Celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations with Chile’ event, hosted at Parliament, was a great example of the rich history of connections between New Zealand and Chile.
Chile is New Zealand’s third largest market in Latin America. In 2019, there were 1,193 Chilean students studying in New Zealand. The majority of Chilean students come to New Zealand to study English Language, but enrolment in schools has also been consistent, with 17% of students studying at New Zealand schools in 2019.
Flights
Latam will be resuming their daily flights to Sydney via Auckland from mid-December and Qantas is flying three times per week from Santiago direct to Sydney. Although the cost of flights is high, in line with worldwide trends, the resumption of regular flights demonstrates the high demand for the Latin America to Oceania route.

Student Ambassadors build global citizenship skills
Since it was set up in 2021, the programme has involved around 85 secondary and 50 tertiary students in six participating regions – Northland, Auckland, Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay, Whanganui and Wellington. Northland acted as national coordinator.
“International students can sometimes find it difficult to connect with locals, make friends or venture outside their campus,” says Sahinde Pala, GM Sector Services at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ).
“Language and cultural barriers, hesitation to meet new people, lack of knowledge of opportunities off campus, or budget constraints – many factors can play a part. The emergence of Covid-19 and lockdowns made it even more important to address these challenges, and so we worked with a range of people, including regional partners and Welcoming Communities, to develop the student ambassador programme.”
The programme has developed differently in each region, but with the same shared goals. Another common factor has been the training provided for student ambassadors – the opportunity to complete a New Zealand Global Competence certificate, training in social media, and specially tailored training provided by ISANA NZ.
“Student ambassadors are bridgebuilders and leaders, who create opportunities for students from different cultures to form relationships and learn about each other,” Ms Pala says.
“The ambassadors themselves also gain from the programme, by developing their understanding of cultural differences and learning new skills and strategies that are valued by employers. And regional communities benefit when international students feel valued and connected – they are more likely to remain in the area or recommend it to others.”
The ISANA NZ Student Ambassador Training explores intercultural concepts in an interactive and engaging format that can be run online or in-person. Participants are then able to apply their learning to develop activities and events that help students to connect with the wider community. Debrief sessions towards the close of a programme cycle support students to reflect on what they have learned from being a student ambassador.
“I enjoyed learning about how communication works between different cultures, going over cultural values and how some are visible and invisible and learning top tips to help me improve as an ambassador” – student feedback.
“Our Northland student ambassadors joined the ISANA workshop as a group of excited students interested in global citizenship and finished as a tight knit group of inter-cultural leaders in the school community. They learnt to work together, giving everyone a chance to contribute and respecting each other’s perspectives. The communication and planning skills honed in the workshop, enabled them to run a large-scale ‘Matariki Kai Festival’ event, introducing a range of food from cultures across the school to the students.” – Jo Lees, National Ambassador Coordinator and Project Manager at Study Northland.
Other activities sparked by the programme in different parts of New Zealand have included a Kiwi Cooking Class, an Auckland Weekly video series, international languages week events and Matariki events organised and run by the ambassadors, diplomatic events attended by ambassadors from other countries and an International Students Issues Panel Discussion.

Several regions have indicated they hope to continue their student ambassador programme beyond 2022: Northland, Tauranga and Hawke’s Bay.
“This student ambassador training is much needed, not only for the international education sector but also across wider communities in New Zealand. In fact, I think everyone could benefit from this training if they have not received similar training before in intercultural communications and leadership,” says Wenhua Yang, Regional Manager at Learning Hawkes Bay.

New Zealand Schools Scholarships relaunched in Viet Nam
The 2023 round of New Zealand Schools Scholarships – launched in January – will see 45 scholarships to 45 secondary schools offered exclusively to secondary school students from Viet Nam. Secondary schools from Kerikeri to Invercargill are taking part in what is ENZ’s latest international education initiative in Viet Nam.
This year’s initiative follows the New Zealand Education Fairs in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City in October 2022 that attracted more than 1,000 attendees. The New Zealand – Viet Nam education relationship was also at the forefront of a visit to Viet Nam in November 2022 by former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Viet Nam is a priority market for New Zealand schools. Pre COVID, the sector saw 80 percent growth in students from Viet Nam between 2017 and 2019. Moreover, nearly a third (28 percent) of all international students from Viet Nam choose to study in New Zealand schools.
ENZ’s Business Development Manager Mary Camp said the New Zealand School Scholarships initiative has attracted quality students with high grade point average and good English language ability to study in New Zealand.
“Vietnamese school students are usually very committed to New Zealand, they stay for several years, experience success, and often pathway to study in New Zealand universities.
“We are delighted to welcome them back to New Zealand and eager for them to experience our quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.”
With relaunching the New Zealand Schools Scholarships for Viet Nam, it was also valuable to have the support of the Schools in International Education Business Association (SIEBA), Camp said.
“SIEBA has been supporting schools by undertaking reference checks in relation to interested education agents, thus reducing the burden on schools and helping them connect with new agents. Activating new agents in Viet Nam will help the entire sector.”
ENZ’s Regional Director – Asia, Ben Burrowes said he was pleased to support the reactivation of the New Zealand Schools Scholarships initiative in Viet Nam.
“ENZ is absolutely committed to its education relationship with Viet Nam and we’re excited to relaunch the New Zealand School Scholarships this year.
“It’s fantastic to see that our international education sector continues to foster strong education ties with Viet Nam, which is demonstrated by the number of schools offering scholarships in 2023.”
Since its launch in 2018, the New Zealand School Scholarships initiative in Viet Nam has grown to become a prestigious, top of mind scholarship for local students.

Year 13, Pakuranga College
2019 New Zealand School Scholarship recipientXuan Khang came to Pakuranga College in June 2019 and graduated at the end of 2022. He remained in New Zealand throughout the pandemic, and achieved an outstanding academic record. He passed NCEA Levels 1 to 3 endorsed with Merit or Excellence gaining Excellence in both Level 3 Calculus and Chemistry. He was involved in the Academic Council, Environmental Council, the Service Council, the Cultural Council and Peer Support. Xuan Khang won Top Academic International Student at senior prizegiving in 2022 and will study Engineering at the University of Auckland in 2023.
"I came to New Zealand to broaden my horizons and become more independent. I have really enjoyed the practical aspects of working in labs and putting theory into practice. By using English daily, I feel my English has improved to a high standard. I have enjoyed being able to discuss my work with my teachers, who have been friendly and helpful. Ho, Thi My Ha (Ha)
Year 13, Mt Roskill Grammar School
2020 New Zealand School Scholarship recipientHa began her study at Mt Roskill Grammar School in 2020. Intent on success, she achieved ‘Excellence’ endorsements at all three NCEA levels, obtaining 230 Excellence credits even before final exams. This is despite COVID lockdowns, the challenge of online learning, and not being able to travel back to see her family. Her homestay and the Mt Roskill International Department supported her during this time. At the 2022 Senior Graduation, she won the International Student Award, 1st in Level 3 accounting, 2nd in Level 3 Physics, the Hays trophy for Excellence in Commerce and the Lacy Cup for Senior literature.
“My time at Mt Roskill Grammar School was a really fun and helpful experience. One of the things I like most is how helpful everyone is. The teachers and the students are all happy to help and support each other. I also like how different it is from Vietnam because there is flexibility to choose our own subjects and how we learn. We have options about how we study and do exercises, so long as we get the results. There are a lot of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to learn new things.”

Second round of German academic exchange funding programme launching in April
ENZ and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will launch the second round of the German academic exchange funding programme on 5 April after the programme’s successful first round.
Funding will be available to researchers at higher education institutions in Germany and New Zealand. ENZ will fund early-career academics from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology to travel to Germany, specifically students who are close to completing their PhD and academics who completed their PhD in the last five years.
With the objective of growing the number of applications in 2023, ENZ has decided to move to a model of providing funding up to NZ$12,500 per year for up to two years, without the need for applicants to show any other sources of funding.
The German academic exchange programme is the result of the signing of a Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP) arrangement between ENZ and DAAD in November 2021 to strengthen academic relations between New Zealand and Germany and promote complementary research activities.
ENZ’s Market Development Manager – Europe, Adina Stoye, said the programme had done much to grow academic collaboration between New Zealand and Germany through the partnership with DAAD, which is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers.
“We are pleased with the success of the first round of the programme and are looking forward to seeing more applications for the second round launching in April.
“As an incentive to encourage more participation, applicants are no longer required to show any other sources of funding,” Stoye said.
Ahead of the programme’s launch, ENZ has organised an online information session on Tuesday 4 April at 7pm NZT (9 am CEST).

New resources for practitioners and international students from ISANA NZ
To achieve this work, ISANA NZ is delighted to be engaged in an International Student Wellbeing Strategy (ISWS) supported project with Studio C Design and Lift Education. Over the past few months, a series of resources has been developed to assist practitioners and promote a rich experience for international students in Aotearoa. These resources have been tailored to the needs of key sector stakeholders: international education practitioners and international students (primary, secondary and tertiary).
International education practitioners
Six micro-online learning modules have been developed to help international education staff provide the best possible support for their students. The modules build on the recently developed Capability Toolkit content that ISANA NZ produced with support from Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao in response to the impact of the prolonged border closure.
Micro-learning is an increasingly popular form of work-based learning, because it is delivered in more manageable chunks and enables learners to absorb and retain more information.
These interactive modules capture industry expertise and engage staff with six crucial topics:
- Intercultural tools for supporting international learner mental health
- Supporting the international learner transition
- Methods for reviewing and improving your international services and products
- Learning from critical incident case studies
- Effectively supporting international learners’ social connectedness
- Supporting international learner employability
To ISANA NZ’s knowledge, this is the first example of micro-learning for international education practitioners in Aotearoa, and it lays an important platform for sector-specific credentials development.
Primary and intermediate aged learners
An interactive activity sheet has been created for learners at primary/intermediate level to play with an adult. The game presents several activities for the student to participate in at home, in school, and in their local community. Learners can tick off each activity as they weave their way through the worksheet, and through their own community.
A series of tips for settling into New Zealand life can be found among the fun illustrations that cover the activity sheet. Both the primary learner resource and staff eLearning modules will be available on the ISANA NZ website at the end of this month.
Secondary school studentsFive documentary style videos highlight international students Alan (from Mexico) and Carren (from China) who currently attend Wellington High School. The videos follow their day-to-day lives as they navigate challenges such as understanding a new culture, settling in and coping with being far away from family back home.
Each of the videos will have subtitles in Mandarin, Hindi, Vietnamese, Korean, and Bahasa Malaysian.

For tertiary students, three podcast episodes have been produced. The podcasts feature panel host Vaelyn, an international student graduate and business owner, as they engage with panelists:

- Pulak from Bangladesh, studying a Masters in teaching English as a second language at the University of Auckland
- Melanie from Malaysia, studying on the Foundation Programme at Up Education
The students share stories, anecdotes, challenges and vulnerabilities while they kōrero about topics such as being part of local communities, coping with stress, dealing with racism, taking positive wellbeing steps, and making most of their time in Aotearoa.

Highlights from Education Fairs and events in Japan and Viet Nam
Japan
In early October, ENZ welcomed 844 visitors to engage with 40 New Zealand education providers representing the school, vocational, English language and university sectors at the first New Zealand student fair in Japan since 2019.

The fair at Roppongi Academy Hills in Tokyo on 1 October had a programme of events that highlighted the strong connections between our two countries. Over the following two days, 49 and 45 of the visiting New Zealand education providers attended the ENZ Agent Seminars in Tokyo and Osaka respectively. Both seminars saw a record number of local agents and education providers, with 181 present in Tokyo and 77 in Osaka.
His Excellency Hamish Cooper, New Zealand Ambassador to Japan with the New Zealand contingent. The New Zealand education providers sang two waiata to support the Ambassador’s speech. A recording of ENZ’s waiata ‘Manapou ki te Ao’ was played and explained in Japanese to convey the waiatas’ meaning and lyrics.
Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Director of Education - Japan said that these events proved a great opportunity for the institutions to network with local school representatives, education and travel experts and gain valuable insights into the Japanese market. She also said that there was an evident increase in interest in long-term study in New Zealand both at the school and tertiary levels, compared with pre-Covid.
"This new trend is testament to the well-established presence New Zealand now has as a study destination in Japan. It can also be attributed to the effects of the Japanese government’s internationalisation policy in the education sector. With over 200 International Baccalaureate schools in Japan, more students are bilingual and eligible for direct entry to New Zealand universities.
There are also over 500 Japanese universities now adopting ‘sogo gata senbatsu’ (comprehensive admissions) that provide a holistic assessment of the applicants including their English language skills and overseas experience. This means that more students are choosing to complete secondary school education in New Zealand to apply to Japanese universities,” said Misa.
The education events along with pre-departure briefings where Japanese market insights were shared and the welcome reception upon arrival with key Japanese education stakeholders and partners were all well-received by the education providers in attendance.
Kerrie Hodgson, Internationalisation Business Partner, Te Pūkenga New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology said it was clear that great effort was put into promoting the events and New Zealand education. “The numbers were high, and I felt that enquiries were more in depth than previous years, and beyond English Language study,” said Kerrie.
Renee Millner, International Director for Western Heights School in Rotorua added that the market insights provided ahead of their arrival were a great introduction to significant changes within the Japanese market.
Viet Nam
Following the action-packed week in Japan, the focus shifted to Viet Nam where the ENZ teams held several New Zealand education events in Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi.
NZ institutions had one-to-one meetings with Vietnamese agents at two ENZ Agent Seminars in Viet Nam.
The series of events began with 19 NZ Masterclasses delivered over two weekends. Over 800 students registered for these online classes, in which New Zealand academics delivered a 40-minute lesson. This was followed by recruitment representatives introducing the entry requirements, scholarship opportunities and benefits of studying in New Zealand. Following the masterclasses, representatives of all eight New Zealand universities visited several schools in Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi, presenting to students and their families at information sessions and in some cases, taking part in mini-fairs.
Ho Chi Minh City was then host to two flagship ENZ events; the Agent Seminar and Counsellors Meet-up and following this, the NZ Education Day Fair. There was significant interest in both events with 50 Vietnamese agents meeting with 29 New Zealand institutions while 25 Viet Nam schools’ counsellors met with all New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga. The New Zealand Education Fair saw over 500 visitors through the event with 385 leads generated.
Ha Noi followed suit with the Agent Seminar and Counsellors Meet-up attracting 40 Vietnamese agents meeting with 27 New Zealand institutions while eight Viet Nam school counsellors met with all New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga. The events finished with a second popular Education Fair with visitors estimated at about 400 people resulting in 258 student leads.
Van Banh, ENZ's Market Manager for Viet Nam said that this year's education events had a mix of the traditional with a more interactive, modern, and sustainable approach which resonated well with attendees.
"Our team wanted to make these events as fun and interactive as possible to show what a New Zealand education is all about. In addition to the one-to-one opportunities for students and parents to talk to the New Zealand institutions, there were workshops with the participation of key opinion leaders, and well-known English IELTS trainers. There were also activities run by our partners such as English skills testing and minigames about New Zealand.
“We also took a more sustainable and innovative approach to our events to support the messaging that we communicate to students about New Zealand being a country that cares about sustainability and the environment, with an eye to the future through innovation. We replaced traditional printed backdrops with digital ones shown on TV screens for each booth, significantly reducing our waste and energy usage in manufacturing production. Our main stage also had a set of three interactive and eye-catching LED screens.
ENZ’s Regional Director for Asia, Ben Burrowes, attended both events and said, “on behalf of the ENZ teams in Viet Nam and Japan, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the New Zealand education providers who attended our events this year.

Record audience for early childhood education symposium with China
This year, the symposium attracted a live audience of 350 attendees and a livestream audience of 100,000, well over the number of attendees in previous years. The symposium’s theme was ‘Advancing Inclusiveness in Early Childhood Education’.
The Early Childhood Education Symposium is an initiative between Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and China Center for International People to People Exchange (CCIPE), a sub-agency of China Ministry of Education (China MoE).
The symposium provides a platform for New Zealand Early Childhood Education (ECE) institutions, academics, practitioners, and policy experts to engage in a cross-cultural dialogue. It leverages New Zealand’s expertise in ECE teacher training programmes.
This was the first year that a delegation of government representatives and ECE experts from New Zealand travelled to China to present at the symposium in person, which sent a positive signal to education partners in China about New Zealand’s strong focus on reconnecting and strengthening our education credentials in the China market.
The symposium’s live presenters from New Zealand included Dr Jane Ewens, Manager Early Learning, Ministry of Education and Fiona He, Director and Founder, TuiTui Educare/Universal Kids Early Education Centre. Dr Ewens presented an overview of the New Zealand Government’s policy focusing on advancing inclusiveness in early childhood education.
ENZ’s General Manager International, Lisa Futschek, who provided opening remarks, said the symposium highlighted the special education relationship between New Zealand and China and our long and fruitful dialogue in a variety of education areas.
“It’s fantastic to see how the symposium has grown and evolved since 2020. We were delighted to be able to travel there, grow our connections in-person, and enable collaboration between people across the education landscape in both our countries.
“2023 has already been an exciting year for rebuilding face-to-face connections for New Zealand and China, and the symposium just helped us build on that so wonderfully,” Lisa said.

CAO Diefeng, Deputy Director General, China Centre for International People-to-People Exchange indicated in his opening remarks that the China-New Zealand Early Childhood Education Symposium has received extensive attention because of its scale and influence. It is highly welcomed by the education sector from both China and New Zealand and is becoming a key platform for early childhood education communication.
“The symposium exemplifies the sound education cooperation between our two countries and plays an important role in deepening substantive cooperation by both sides,” CAO Diefeng said.
Dr Jane Ewens said the information exchange was valuable to all audiences and demonstrated there are opportunities for the Ministry of Education to learn from our Chinese partners.
“We can create stronger educational ties and foster ongoing cooperation with China, aligning with government priorities. This could include exploring attracting Chinese teachers and students to New Zealand's early childhood education teaching workforce.
“There is also an opportunity for New Zealand practitioners and policy makers to consider and possibly integrate how China implements their curriculum as we develop curriculum resources for New Zealand Early Childhood Education kaiako (teachers),” Dr Ewens said.

This year’s symposium resulted in a range of valuable outcomes for New Zealand’s education relationship with China and for the sector. The symposium generated good visibility for New Zealand, with 45 media articles (accounting for almost four million views), which included reporting from top tier Chinese media. Many connections and leads for New Zealand participants were created during and after the symposium – one New Zealand speaker reported being approached by 50 Chinese counterparts after their virtual presentation.
Aside from the symposium, the New Zealand delegation’s key objectives included supporting a bilateral education initiative linked to the New Zealand-China Arrangement on Education Cooperation and Training, while showcasing New Zealand’s expertise in early childhood education practices and curriculum to audiences in China.
The visit provided a chance for the delegation to understand best practices in early childhood education from a Chinese cultural perspective that they could put into practice in New Zealand to better support learners from Chinese backgrounds. As part of the programme in Nanjing, the delegation visited two kindergartens and presented a panel session with academics and students at Nanjing Normal University.

Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is inviting New Zealand education providers to take part in an initiative to encourage students from Thailand who have previously studied here to return to New Zealand for further study. Providers are invited to subsidise travel for returning students - up to a maximum of NZD $3,000 for students returning for a year or more.
The scheme will work by students or agents providing proof of previous study and once the students are in New Zealand, can rebate the air fare back to their account through coordination with their agents. The amount students can rebate is based on the receipt of their booked travel but no more than the $3,000 cap. New Zealand schools who were involved in the recent education events in Thailand gave positive feedback on this concept.
ENZ will publicise the initiative online, via agents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and media. Education agents will also be asked to co-promote this with us while KTC credit card, the scheme’s credit card partner, will be promoting this campaign and additional benefits through their own database and PR channels.
