• Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins to address NZIEC 2019

  For the second time in his role as Minister of Education, Minister Hipkins will address the conference delegates of NZIEC 2019.

  On the morning of 7 August, Minister Hipkins will give a ministerial address followed by a brief question and answer session, where delegates will get to put their questions to the Minister through the Conference app.

  Minister Hipkins will reflect on the past year in international education, and address the opportunities and challenges the sector will face in the coming 12 months. 

  Delegates interested in hearing more on the Strategy can head to the panel session on the Wednesday afternoon. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and ENZ, the ‘New Zealand Internation Education Strategy: One Year On’ session will discuss how the cross-agency action plan has affected positive change and collaboration. Additional to the Ministry of Education and ENZ, there will be representatives from all agencies involved including MFAT, MBIE, Immigration NZ and NZQA.

• New Zealand Partners Week 2021

   

  Partners from ten countries and territories will be on the invite list, including the People’s Republic of China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

  “New Zealand Partners Week will give a platform to some of the korero that we haven’t been able to have over the past year,” ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, says.

  “We are very happy to play our part in assisting the international education sector to thrive in this tough climate.”

  The sessions across the week have been designed to give attendees in New Zealand and offshore the opportunity to open up collaboration and make new connections.

  It will cover New Zealand updates and exclusive country-specific sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, professional development workshops, live Q&A sessions with experts, and virtual exhibitions. It will feature a range of fields including K-12 education, Education Technology, Higher Education, Vocational Training and work-based education, as well as the English training sector.

  The event will be delivered via virtual platform OnAIR, and streamed to audiences from all ten countries, in six different languages (English, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Japanese and Bahasa Indonesian).

• New insights on East Asian and Indian markets for New Zealand educators

  Education New Zealand is bringing together education agents, academics, administrators, government officials and other experts for seven twice-weekly sessions starting on 18 November 2021.

  ENZ’s Regional Director Asia, Ben Burrowes, says the East Asia and India Market Insights Series will explore ways of staying connected in the region, analyse competitors and market trends, and offer fresh perspectives on New Zealand’s offerings.

  “Our expert government, institution, agent and industry partners have up-to-the-minute insights to share on learner demand, market sentiment and the competitor landscape,” he says.

  “The range of perspectives on offer will be invaluable in helping our people to shape their strategies and continue to build a sustainable international education sector.”

  The series of seven webinars runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Thursday 18 November to Thursday 9 December 2021 between:

  4 pm – 4:45 pm NZDT

• ENZ seals exchange deal with Germany for early-career researchers

  DAAD is the world's largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers, and is a key partner for ENZ in Germany.

  Early-career researchers from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology will be able to take part in the DAAD’s Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP).  In the future, young German researchers will also be able to travel to New Zealand under the programme.

  The programme covers all subject areas and is open to students who are close to completing their doctorate, as well as to academics who completed a doctorate within the last five years.

  ENZ will support the New Zealand institutions involved to fund the costs and living stipend for New Zealand researchers to travel to Germany, while their German counterparts will be funded by the DAAD. ENZ would match the contribution from local institutions to a maximum of NZ$12,500 per year per project. Projects would normally be funded for two years.

  New Zealand-German Academic Partnership Event

  ENZ will host a virtual New Zealand-German academic partnership event on 23 February 2022, from 8:00-9:00 am New Zealand Time (22 February, 20:00-21:00 pm CET). This will be an opportunity for New Zealand and German institutions to learn more about the programme, share their ideas and identify opportunities for joint research projects. The call for proposals opens on 6 April 2022 for the funding period from 2023-2025. Those interested in attending the partnership event can register here.

  The exchange agreement was signed in Berlin on 25 November 2021 and builds on our strong education and science links with Germany. It was one of the key actions arising from a visit to Germany in January 2020 by a delegation from New Zealand’s Centres of Research Excellence, led by ENZ’s Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

• Alumni events in China build ties with NZ

  More than 100 past, current and future students, as well as representatives from China’s Ministry of Education and six other key government agencies, attended an event in Beijing on 8 July 2022, organised by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao.  

  Two former international students played a major role in the success of this event.  

  Chinese author Ma Boyong gave a keynote speech. Ma Boyong was a student at Waikato University, and today he is a well-known novelist, columnist and blogger, whose work has been adapted into successful TV drama series. His achievements have been recognised with the People's Literature Prize, one of China's most prestigious honours.  He told guests how his New Zealand study inspired his creativity, his desire to be a writer, and led to love – he met his wife in New Zealand! 

  Reggie Li, who trained at the New Zealand School of Travel and Tourism and later worked extensively at top restaurants and hotels in New Zealand as a chef, is the New Zealand Embassy’s executive chef.  Reggie gave salmon cooking demonstrations to the assembled guests. The demo was interactive and put a spotlight on searing/cooking salmon with a blowtorch.  The salmon was then enjoyed by the guests.  New Zealand-imported Aoraki salmon is often served at embassy events as it has a strong reputation in China, promotes sustainability and is, of course, loved by Chinese. 

  In Guangzhou on 10 July 2022, a similar number of guests gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China, and the festival of Matariki, the Māori New Year.   

  Organised by ENZ with support from other government agencies (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, and Tourism New Zealand), the 2022 NZ Guangzhou Community Mid-Year Event brought together close to 100 agents, past, present and future students and New Zealand expats. The event included a screening of the award-winning film Whale Rider. 

  “Events like this help us maintain relationships with our alumni students, connect new students with alumni, and strengthen people’s connections with New Zealand,” says Miranda Herbert, ENZ’s Director based in China. 

  “It is also very rewarding to showcase the benefits of a New Zealand education and hear about its impact on the lives and careers of former students.”

• Inviting feedback on the Capability Toolkit project

  More than 36 pages of tips, guidelines, tools, case studies and scenarios have been developed for the online resource, and ISANA NZ is seeking your feedback. 

  Material is grouped around key themes that include wraparound tailored support, intercultural competence in education contexts, and student experience information for agents and offshore partners. The toolkit will be published early in 2023.  

  “This is all about delivering an excellent student experience,” says Chris Beard, ISANA’s Executive Director. 

  “The toolkit will promote evidence-based practice that supports innovation, nimbleness and risk mitigation, and aligns with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, which came into effect this year.”

• Second round of German academic exchange funding programme launching in April

  ENZ and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will launch the second round of the German academic exchange funding programme on 5 April after the programme’s successful first round.

  Funding will be available to researchers at higher education institutions in Germany and New Zealand. ENZ will fund early-career academics from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology to travel to Germany, specifically students who are close to completing their PhD and academics who completed their PhD in the last five years.

  With the objective of growing the number of applications in 2023, ENZ has decided to move to a model of providing funding up to NZ$12,500 per year for up to two years, without the need for applicants to show any other sources of funding.

  The German academic exchange programme is the result of the signing of a Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP) arrangement between ENZ and DAAD in November 2021 to strengthen academic relations between New Zealand and Germany and promote complementary research activities.

  ENZ’s Market Development Manager – Europe, Adina Stoye, said the programme had done much to grow academic collaboration between New Zealand and Germany through the partnership with DAAD, which is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers.

  “We are pleased with the success of the first round of the programme and are looking forward to seeing more applications for the second round launching in April.

  “As an incentive to encourage more participation, applicants are no longer required to show any other sources of funding,” Stoye said.

  Ahead of the programme’s launch, ENZ has organised an online information session on Tuesday 4 April at 7pm NZT (9 am CEST).

• We’re Always On

  Having a continual in-market presence that actively promotes New Zealand’s attributes as a study destination boosts our chances of prospective students including New Zealand in their consideration set.

  The objective of the 'Always On' activity is to drive prospective students (and parents of students) to targeted content landing pages on studyinnewzealand.com.  The goal of the landing pages is for these students to register their details to find out more about studying in New Zealand either through an Education New Zealand Recognised Agency (ENZRA) or directly with an institution.  The other objective of the activity is to deliver the New Zealand education brand proposition, ‘Think New’, in a way that will resonate with our target audience and see them consider New Zealand as a valid study option.

  We’re currently live in India, China, Malaysia and Viet Nam, and will go live very soon in Thailand and Indonesia.  For each country we’re creating ‘’home’’ pages

  (e.g. India), sector-specific pages (e.g. universities) and, coming soon, programme-specific pages (e.g. engineering).

  All pages will be in the local language.  

  

• Teaching the world about New Zealand

  To better market New Zealand as a study destination, we’ve added hundreds of high-resolution images, videos, infographics and case studies to the New Zealand Story toolkit.  

  What is the New Zealand story?

  New Zealand Story is an initiative that brings together expertise from the private sector and Government agencies, including NZTE, Tourism New Zealand, Education New Zealand (ENZ) and more. Our purpose is to help define the things that make us unique as a country and give us a framework to share our New Zealand story with the world. Our toolkit is a big part of this. The New Zealand Story business toolkit resources are consistent with and support the resources available to you in ENZ’s Brand Lab.  

  How the toolkit can help

• eVisas and VisaView coming soon

  From 7 December, eVisas (passport-free applications and label-less visas) will be available for many students who apply online, joining the one thousand applicants who are applying for visas electronically every week through Immigration ONLINE.

  At the same time, New Zealand education providers will become able to use Immigration New Zealand’s VisaView service to check whether a non-New Zealand student can study with them.

  eVisas

  INZ will extend eVisas to the following online applicants:

  • People applying in New Zealand to renew their Work, Visitor and Student visas (except Chinese nationals)*

  • People from visa-waiver countries applying outside New Zealand for a Work, Visitor or Student visa (citizens of visa-waiver countries do not need a visa to travel to New Zealand as a tourist for less than three months).

  These applicants will not have to send in their passports to INZ when they submit their applications online. The visa holder will receive their visa approval notification through their Immigration ONLINE account, and may print their visa record from their account. This notification contains visa details, including travel and other visa conditions.

  Visa holders are advised to carry their visa approval notification when they travel. Online systems allow airlines to confirm that a person can travel to New Zealand, but the visa approval notification can be used as an additional confirmation if requested.

  Visa transfer to new passports

  Because visa details are linked to passports, people who obtain a new passport after being granted their visa need to transfer their visa details to their new passport. There is potentially a greater risk with eVisas that visa holders may neglect to transfer visa details to their new passports. For explanation of how to transfer visa details, see here. 

  VisaView

  VisaView is an online visa enquiry system that is being extended to education providers from 7 December 2015. It will enable providers to check whether a non-New Zealand citizen can study with them.

  VisaView is currently used by employers to check migrants’ eligibility to work in New Zealand.

  What happens next?

  We will email education providers when VisaView is launched, with a link inviting them to register for a VisaView account. A detailed user guide will be available.

  There will be some opportunities for education providers to attend face to face training sessions in a few centres during December and early February.

  * INZ is liaising with Chinese authorities and plans to implement eVisas for Chinese nationals during 2016.
