• ENZ Viet Nam introduces agent-led fairs

  Tam Le, ENZ’s Marketing & Strategic Relations Manager for Viet Nam, said the decision is part of her team’s efforts to capitalise on the growing awareness of New Zealand’s education system in the market.

  “Viet Nam’s academic year starts in late August and ends in late May, creating two key recruitment windows for international education: one in March/ April and one in September/ October. 

  “It is important to promote New Zealand in these months, and while ENZ previously led the fairs in the March recruiting season, we would like to leverage the resources from one of our top local education agents for the September season.”

  Together with Immigration New Zealand, ENZ’s Viet Nam team identified a number of potential education agents and conducted a “pitching process” to select the most competitive proposal.

  The chosen education agent, L&V Education Consultancy, will work directly with the education providers for the events in September, in consultation with ENZ where required.

  New Zealand’s education on Vietnamese national television

  

  A documentary called New Zealand: The road to knowledge, recently played on VTV4, one of Viet Nam’s national TV stations.

  Tam said it is great to see New Zealand’s education offering introduced to Vietnamese audiences – especially on a national channel.

  The documentary highlights the requirements needed to apply for New Zealand institutions and provides key information about life in New Zealand such as accommodation options, public transport and extra-curricular activities.

  It also includes interviews with the New Zealand Ambassador to Viet Nam, university representatives, alumni and current students.

• eT4e - Ed Tech for Export conference

  The conference is organised by Grow Wellington with the support of Education New Zealand.

  This year's conference features four international speakers from business and academia - Lee Wilson, CEO of Filament Games in Wisconsin; Dr Erkki Sutinen, head of the edTech Research Group from the University of Eastern Finland; Jennifer Carolan, head of the NewSchools Seed Fund in California; and Hapara founder Jan Zawadzki.

  They will be joined by national speakers including Noelene Anderson, Pixelhouse; David Ellis, NZCER; Adrian Sallis, Vital English; David Cameron, LearnKo and Maru Nihoniho, Metia Interactive.

  Globally, education technology is one of the fastest growing sectors in education. Growth is being driven by increased student and teacher demand for engaging and effective learning solutions, the need to develop digital skills and digital citizenship in modern economies, and the entry of major technology corporates and investment entities into the business of education. Global expenditure is forecast to reach US$220b by 2017.

  “Asia- Pacific is expected to be one of the leading regions for growth of edtech. Education New Zealand is keen to work with those companies with smart content and technology to capitalise on that demand,” says Clive Jones, General Manager of Business Development at Education New Zealand.

• New insights on East Asian and Indian markets for New Zealand educators

  Education New Zealand is bringing together education agents, academics, administrators, government officials and other experts for seven twice-weekly sessions starting on 18 November 2021.

  ENZ’s Regional Director Asia, Ben Burrowes, says the East Asia and India Market Insights Series will explore ways of staying connected in the region, analyse competitors and market trends, and offer fresh perspectives on New Zealand’s offerings.

  “Our expert government, institution, agent and industry partners have up-to-the-minute insights to share on learner demand, market sentiment and the competitor landscape,” he says.

• New Zealand Partners Week 2021

   

  Partners from ten countries and territories will be on the invite list, including the People’s Republic of China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

  “New Zealand Partners Week will give a platform to some of the korero that we haven’t been able to have over the past year,” ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, says.

  “We are very happy to play our part in assisting the international education sector to thrive in this tough climate.”

  The sessions across the week have been designed to give attendees in New Zealand and offshore the opportunity to open up collaboration and make new connections.

  It will cover New Zealand updates and exclusive country-specific sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, professional development workshops, live Q&A sessions with experts, and virtual exhibitions. It will feature a range of fields including K-12 education, Education Technology, Higher Education, Vocational Training and work-based education, as well as the English training sector.

• Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins to address NZIEC 2019

  For the second time in his role as Minister of Education, Minister Hipkins will address the conference delegates of NZIEC 2019.

  On the morning of 7 August, Minister Hipkins will give a ministerial address followed by a brief question and answer session, where delegates will get to put their questions to the Minister through the Conference app.

  Minister Hipkins will reflect on the past year in international education, and address the opportunities and challenges the sector will face in the coming 12 months. 

  Delegates interested in hearing more on the Strategy can head to the panel session on the Wednesday afternoon. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and ENZ, the ‘New Zealand Internation Education Strategy: One Year On’ session will discuss how the cross-agency action plan has affected positive change and collaboration. Additional to the Ministry of Education and ENZ, there will be representatives from all agencies involved including MFAT, MBIE, Immigration NZ and NZQA.

• Second round of German academic exchange funding programme launching in April

  ENZ and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will launch the second round of the German academic exchange funding programme on 5 April after the programme’s successful first round.

  Funding will be available to researchers at higher education institutions in Germany and New Zealand. ENZ will fund early-career academics from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology to travel to Germany, specifically students who are close to completing their PhD and academics who completed their PhD in the last five years.

  With the objective of growing the number of applications in 2023, ENZ has decided to move to a model of providing funding up to NZ$12,500 per year for up to two years, without the need for applicants to show any other sources of funding.

  The German academic exchange programme is the result of the signing of a Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP) arrangement between ENZ and DAAD in November 2021 to strengthen academic relations between New Zealand and Germany and promote complementary research activities.

  ENZ’s Market Development Manager – Europe, Adina Stoye, said the programme had done much to grow academic collaboration between New Zealand and Germany through the partnership with DAAD, which is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers.

  “We are pleased with the success of the first round of the programme and are looking forward to seeing more applications for the second round launching in April.

  “As an incentive to encourage more participation, applicants are no longer required to show any other sources of funding,” Stoye said.

• ENZ seals exchange deal with Germany for early-career researchers

  DAAD is the world's largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers, and is a key partner for ENZ in Germany.

  Early-career researchers from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology will be able to take part in the DAAD’s Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP).  In the future, young German researchers will also be able to travel to New Zealand under the programme.

  The programme covers all subject areas and is open to students who are close to completing their doctorate, as well as to academics who completed a doctorate within the last five years.

  ENZ will support the New Zealand institutions involved to fund the costs and living stipend for New Zealand researchers to travel to Germany, while their German counterparts will be funded by the DAAD. ENZ would match the contribution from local institutions to a maximum of NZ$12,500 per year per project. Projects would normally be funded for two years.

  New Zealand-German Academic Partnership Event

  ENZ will host a virtual New Zealand-German academic partnership event on 23 February 2022, from 8:00-9:00 am New Zealand Time (22 February, 20:00-21:00 pm CET). This will be an opportunity for New Zealand and German institutions to learn more about the programme, share their ideas and identify opportunities for joint research projects. The call for proposals opens on 6 April 2022 for the funding period from 2023-2025. Those interested in attending the partnership event can register here.

  The exchange agreement was signed in Berlin on 25 November 2021 and builds on our strong education and science links with Germany. It was one of the key actions arising from a visit to Germany in January 2020 by a delegation from New Zealand’s Centres of Research Excellence, led by ENZ’s Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

• Inviting feedback on the Capability Toolkit project

  More than 36 pages of tips, guidelines, tools, case studies and scenarios have been developed for the online resource, and ISANA NZ is seeking your feedback. 

  Material is grouped around key themes that include wraparound tailored support, intercultural competence in education contexts, and student experience information for agents and offshore partners. The toolkit will be published early in 2023.  

  “This is all about delivering an excellent student experience,” says Chris Beard, ISANA’s Executive Director. 

  “The toolkit will promote evidence-based practice that supports innovation, nimbleness and risk mitigation, and aligns with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, which came into effect this year.”
