  • Soha Ali Khan advocates for a New Zealand education

    Ms Khan, who has 3.1 million Instagram followers and 2.1 million followers on Twitter, is a well-known Indian actress who has performed in around 30 films in Hindi, Bengali and English.  

    In her role as a brand advocate, Ms Khan will promote New Zealand as a preferred study abroad destination to Indian students and their families, through social media. 

    ENZ’s Director for India, Jugnu Roy, says that with New Zealand’s borders reopening recently, it is essential to reignite people’s interest in New Zealand as a study destination. 

    “Ms Khan’s academic qualifications and her own experiences as an international student, as well as her celebrity status, will help us maintain the quality reputation of New Zealand education in India,” says Ms Roy.  

    “She will be discovering and sharing insights on opportunities in New Zealand’s universities and schools, using her social media channels.” 

    The announcement of Soha Ali Khan’s appointment as a brand advocate received more than 4,000 likes on social media, and the related news media coverage included 30 stories with more than 226.3 million views.   

  • New Zealand successes at PIEoneer Awards 2022

    Congratulations to the University of Auckland’s India Support Programme, which won Marketing Campaign of the Year against some strong competition. Congratulations also to Ngā Hononga-ā-Kiwa (University of Waikato), for being highly commended in the Championing Diversity category, and to Intern Abroad HQ, which was highly commended in both the Real Life Learning and the Sustainability International Impact categories. 

    These awards are highly sought after as they recognise innovation and achievement in global education. Around 550 people from around the world attended the event in person, with hundreds more online.  

    The University of Auckland, New Zealand: As India is the university’s second-largest source market, the India Support Programme was the perfect opportunity for Auckland to promote its support options to students, to provide them with a better experience and to build and maintain brand presence in the market. It created a short, simple, and effective basis for its campaign: ‘We are with you, until you can be with us in New Zealand.’ 

    Ngā Hononga-ā-Kiwa: In 2021, Ngā Hononga-ā-Kiwa (University of Waikato) had the highest Māori student population out of all New Zealand universities. It used two work streams to fill knowledge and opportunity gaps including the newly-created Māori Education stream, which created a tangible resource that informs educators and youth on how global citizenship is defined from a Māori/indigenous perspective, and Māori Business for which 24 students received full scholarships. 

    Intern Abroad HQ, New Zealand: Intern Abroad HQ continues to evolve its internship portfolio, even in a hard year like 2021. It expanded its range of placements and made sure remote and overseas internships aligned to at least one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It also launched the exclusive Experiential Learning Curriculum, a guided reflection course incorporated into all its internships, bridging the gap between interns’ studies and careers. 

    The New Zealand Global Competence Certificate, which is a collaboration between Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao, AFS Intercultural Programs and Massey University Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa, was also a finalist in two categories of the awards.  

    Grant McPherson presented the PIEoneer of the Year award sponsored by ENZ to AMOpportunities from the United States.

    ENZ sponsored the PIEoneer of the Year Award, for the organisation or individual who can demonstrate their commitment to improving the global education industry and show how their entry has genuinely changed the landscape we operate in.  Grant McPherson presented this year’s award to AMOpportunities from the United States, which aims to provide clinical training for schools, hospitals, and students globally. To date, more than 3,600 students have gone through the platform and completed rotations at 250+ clinical sites. With partners such as UChicago Medicine, MedStar Georgetown University hospital and more across the US, numbers look set to keep rising. 

  • NZ’s education brand remains stable despite border closures

    A recent presentation by Jason Cate of Kantar, who carried out the 2022 annual brand survey for ENZ, considers two broad questions: 

    • How is the demand for international education changing post-Covid 19? 
    • How is New Zealand’s brand as an education destination being impacted? 

    “This programme tracks perceptions of New Zealand as an education destination globally, but also specific association statements and overall sentiment, appeal and attractiveness,” Jason Cate says.  

    “It’s always interesting to see how this develops and changes over time, particularly over the last couple of years, given all the challenges.” 

    More than 4,800 potential students were surveyed online across 11 priority countries, as well as their parents in some markets. The 16-24 year olds surveyed were mostly current students, and all of them were considering further study in an offshore, English-speaking country. 

    Jason Cate says the survey shows the overall nature of demand for offshore education is stable in 2022, and only slightly lower than before Covid-19.  

    The core reasons why students are considering studying offshore haven’t changed: 

    • to live and travel overseas 
    • to meet new people 
    • to enhance their employability. 

    The survey shows there has been a significant reduction in the proportion of students delaying their studies because of Covid-19 (from close to half of students to around one third), but the proportions of students considering both study offshore and at home, or study offshore and online, have increased. In other words, there is a shift in their preferences for the mode of delivery. 

    Across most of our key partner countries, perceptions of New Zealand are relatively constant, with the only change being a small decline in awareness. New Zealand again tussles with Singapore for the fifth strongest brand in student mobility among English-speaking countries.

  • High level of interest in vocational education forum

    Organised by Skills Consulting Group and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), together with Te Pūkenga, the forum provided an opportunity to share knowledge and insights on best practice in technical and vocational education and training, in an accessible format. 

    A key theme was the importance of close relationships with industry, particularly in terms of apprenticeships. For some participants, a longstanding perception that higher education is more important than vocational education remains a challenge. Student panel participants also talked about the confidence and support that their parents provided when they were making decisions about whether to enter vocational education programmes, and having no regrets about the career paths followed. 

    Topics covered included solving skills shortages, apprenticeships, youth employment, lifelong learning, digital transformation, sustainability, and promoting diversity. Senior government officials, major companies, international organisations, sector leaders and students from around the world spoke at the forum, which was opened with a speech from Education Minister Chris Hipkins.  

    Text-based chat and discussion tools in the virtual environment were multilingual, providing instant translation to enable communication and networking across 28 different languages.  

    The China – New Zealand Higher Vocational Education Summit was also part of the APAC TVET Forum and featured a dedicated virtual room for Chinese presenters and audience members. The Summit provided a platform to: 

    • discuss New Zealand’s recent experience of vocational education reform  
    • further develop cooperation in vocational education between New Zealand and China, building on the existing joint programmes between Te Pūkenga subsidiaries and vocational institutions in China. 

    Keynote speakers from China included Chen Dali, Deputy Director, General Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges from the China Ministry of Education, and presenters from industry including Wang Jinsheng from Qingdao Technical College. 

    ENZ Business Development Manager Richard Kyle says APAC TVET is the only forum of its type in the region. 

    “It was particularly encouraging to see double the number of registrations this year, building on the success of the first forum in 2021. There’s clearly a high level of interest in this event, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase New Zealand’s strengths in vocational and technical education.” 

    Positive comments were received from many attendees.

    “Amazing numbers... Very informative sessions and I’ve got people more interested in our upcoming activities.”

  • From the CE: Promoting New Zealand’s education in Asia

    The visit by Education Minister Chris Hipkins to South Korea, Indonesia and Singapore in October 2022 was an opportunity to reaffirm the Government’s strong commitment to international education. Representatives from the university sector, Te Pūkenga, schools, as well as the PTE and EdTech sectors, and ENZ were part of the accompanying delegation. Bilateral meetings were held with key Ministers in each country, and there were opportunities to meet with alumni, agents local school children and others. You can read more about this trip in this edition of E-News. 

    This month, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s visit to Asia also included a significant international education component, particularly in Viet Nam. Education was highlighted as an important pillar of partnership in all bilateral meetings, and we were delighted to help arrange and participate in an education forum in Hanoi. We will report on this trip in more detail next month. 

    Our recent international education events have featured a mixture of ENZ-run events and commercial and global events. The key aim has been to raise the awareness and profile of New Zealand education, and provide a platform for New Zealand education providers to engage directly with prospective students and their families, with education agencies and other key stakeholders, particularly within Asia. Recent events have included a Korean agent seminar, COEX Fair and New Zealand education night reception in Seoul, a reconnecting series with Japanese partners in Tokyo, Viet Nam agent seminars and fairs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and a Thai agent seminar and fair in Bangkok.     The second phase of New Zealand’s successful international marketing campaign, I AM NEW, is now underway with a primary focus on China, India, South Korea, Japan, USA, Brazil, Viet Nam, Thailand and Germany. While the initial campaign aimed to raise awareness that New Zealand has reopened for international education, this second phase is focussed on reigniting interest in a New Zealand study experience, and transforming that interest into a commitment to study with New Zealand. A Spanish version of the I AM NEW campaign has also just been launched yesterday in Bogotá, Colombia, to reach this important segment of the Latin America market. 

    As we work with our partners and stakeholders within New Zealand and offshore to promote New Zealand education in the lead up to the 2023 student intake, we are hearing about a shortage of homestay accommodation that it would be good to resolve. More families are needed to welcome international students into their homes. This can be an enormously rewarding experience for everyone involved, one that builds lasting friendships and a deeper understanding of people from another language and culture. We will be talking with the sector to agree the best approach to addressing this challenge.

  • Manaaki Scholarships operations transferred to ENZ

    Operational responsibility for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships programme was formally transferred to Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) on 1 November 2022, the result of almost two years of sustained effort from both sides. 

    The team transferring from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), along with other new staff working on the scholarships programme, were welcomed to ENZ with a mihi whakatau by a group that included ENZ Board Chair Steve Maharey and Chief Executive Grant McPherson. 

    Manaaki Scholarships represent the government’s single largest investment in international scholarships and have been awarded for more than 70 years. ENZ is taking over operational management from MFAT, which will remain responsible for setting the strategic direction, alumni relationships and funding the programme.  

    On the symbolic handing over of MFAT's ‘living taonga’ to ENZ, Divisional Manager Joanna Kempkers noted, “if our Policy Team are the head, giving strategic direction, and the Alumni Team is the arms, reaching out to embrace scholars on completion, then the Operations Team is the beating heart of the Manaaki Scholarships Programme. We are confident that ENZ will take good care of our team, of the Manaaki Scholarships Programme, and deliver enhanced ‘mana through manaaki’ to our individual scholars.” 

    ENZ and MFAT have worked together on an improvement programme that will get underway early in 2023. This will include a technology upgrade as well as operational policy shifts to strengthen student experience.  

    “This partnership is one of those rare events where logic and virtue combine to provide a stronger and better outcome,” said ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson. “It is not just a good idea for our two agencies, but it’s a great idea for NZ Inc and will bring broader benefits beyond our immediate goals.” 

    “We know our own in-country teams already work closely with MFAT on matters concerning the Manaaki Scholars,” says GM Sector Services Sahinde Pala. 

    “This is an exciting opportunity for us to become more closely involved in the scholarships programme and the work on continuous improvements. Our aim is to ensure scholars have an excellent experience and become lifelong ambassadors for Aotearoa New Zealand.” 

    Manaaki Scholarships are a key pillar of Aotearoa New Zealand’s International Development Co-operation, offering more than 1,100 scholarships annually to students from 112 eligible countries to study in Aotearoa New Zealand, in the Pacific, or online.

  • Scholarships awarded to international students from Germany 

    Over the three-month campaign we received hundreds of applications, of which Ronja Härdtner’s was the strongest. A Master’s student in International Nature Conservation at Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Ronja will complete her degree at Lincoln University in New Zealand.  

    Thanks to everyone who helped ENZ representative Marina Wilmerstadt to surprise Ronja at her university. You can see her reaction to the big news here.

    Congratulations to Ronja for winning the Welcome to New Zealand scholarship, and to the other award winners who will be confirmed shortly. We can’t wait to welcome you all to Aotearoa New Zealand.

  • Education links with China

    Lisa Futschek, General Manager, International, at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) says the Joint Working Group has become an important mechanism for supporting educational cooperation and exchange with China.  

    “It’s a valuable opportunity for government agencies and education sector representatives from both countries to exchange ideas and information and build relationships.”. 

    This is the second time the Joint Working Group has been held virtually. Senior officials and subject matter experts from both New Zealand and China’s education and government sectors came together to discuss topics of mutual interest including higher education, early childhood education, vocational education and applied learning, and quality assurance.  

    Jinpeng Huai, Minister of Education, People’s Republic of China and Hon Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education, New Zealand exchanged remarks at the Opening of the 10th Joint Working Group

    The meeting saw the renewal of the Addendum to the New Zealand – China Arrangement on Cooperation in Education and Training, which covers a range of joint projects including the New Zealand-China Tripartite Partnership Programme. Note: the 2023 New Zealand-China Tripartite Fund is currently open for proposals from New Zealand university representatives.

    Secretary for Education and Chief Executive, Ministry of Education of New Zealand, Iona Holsted and Vice Minister, Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China, Xuejun Tian, renewed the Addendum to the New Zealand – China Arrangement on Cooperation in Education and Training.

    The meeting also provided an opportunity for New Zealand representatives to provide updates on collaboration with China in the areas of Vocational Education, Higher Education, and Quality Assurance. 

    David Christiansen, ITP Transition Lead, Te Pūkenga, shared the newly-launched International Strategy and the development of international collaboration and opportunities internationally and in particular with China.   

    “We wish to renew and strengthen our existing offshore collaborations and create new collaborations. New Zealand has many areas of strength, across a range of industries, where we believe we can offer value and strength to Chinese Industry,” Mr Christiansen said. 

    There are currently 41 degree or diploma joint programmes across more than 14 subjects from engineering and fashion to viticulture and winemaking, and agriculture. These partnerships cover 20-plus provinces and numerous cities throughout China.   

    The fifth New Zealand China Higher Education Forum, co-hosted by Universities New Zealand and China Education Association for International Exchange was held virtually on 10 November 2022 and was a discussion topic for the JWG during the Higher Education discussion. Chris Whelan, Chief Executive of Universities New Zealand, was present at the fourth New Zealand-China Higher Education Forum held in Beijing in 2015. He told participants that, back then, “the focus was on how to deepen collaboration between our institutions, how to grow mutual student mobility, and how to ensure high-quality education offerings.” It is evident the New Zealand-China education relationship in the higher education sector has developed over the years to envelop broader current topics such as “green and sustainable development of higher education,” building on the foundation established through years of cooperation. 

    The final discussion topic, Quality Assurance, saw Alex Bidois from New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) provide an update on the progress of the working group on the Recognition of Distance Learning Qualifications between NZQA and the China Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange. The working group was established at the ninth Joint Working Group and NZQA has been working with its partner agency to lay a foundation to build towards mutual recognition of distance learning qualifications.  

  • ENZ calls for funding proposals for New Zealand-China research partnerships

    The New Zealand-China Tripartite Partnership Fund 2023 offers funding of up to NZD 20,000-30,000 for each partnership project, with the call for proposals open until 1 March 2023.

    The fund supports new or existing research partnerships between New Zealand and Chinese universities. There are usually three universities involved – two from China and one from New Zealand. 

    The Tripartite Partnership Fund, administered by ENZ, has a pool of up to NZD 100,000 in 2023 for research partnerships in the arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences and applied sciences. Designed to encourage strategic academic relationships, it supports the creation or development of the partnership rather than funding the research itself. 

    With the global Covid-19 pandemic restricting some international travel, the fund welcomes innovative ideas. Current investments include digital technology services, communications platforms, translation costs and journal access.  

    At the recent New Zealand-China 10th Joint Working Group held on 22 November, senior officials at the meeting noted the value of Tripartite research relationships and the impact of having funding from both governments to establish new partnerships or nurture established research collaboration. Li Qing, Deputy Secretary General China Scholarship Council, remarked on the benefits of both student mobility through scholarships and closer research links such as the Tripartite Partnership Programme. The co-chair of the Joint Working Group, Vice Minister Tian Xuejun, stated in his closing remarks that China and New Zealand should continue to strengthen existing cooperation activities, listing the Tripartite Partnership Programme as one of the initiatives. 

    Lisa Futschek, General Manager International, reinforced ENZ’s commitment to administering the fund.  

    “We remain committed to the Tripartite Partnership Programme and its valuable contribution toward stronger global connections, research links and partnerships – key goals under the revised New Zealand International Education Strategy, launched by Minister Hipkins in August this year. We look forward to many more partnerships under this programme.”  

    Established in 2005, the Tripartite Research Partnership is a valued part of the New Zealand – China bilateral education relationship and we welcome proposals from researchers to join the growing list of funding recipients.

  • Looking back and looking ahead in India 

    “We’ve seen some successes and we also have some learnings to share with the sector,” says Jugnu Roy, ENZ’s Director of Engagement based in New Delhi. 

    “With New Zealand’s borders remaining closed for the first half of 2022, it was certainly a challenge to sustain the Indian student pipeline into New Zealand for higher studies. We knew going conventional wouldn’t help, and so we amped up our PR efforts.”  

    Aligned with ENZ’s approach of offering future-focused education, the team targeted learning opportunities for tertiary students under the umbrella of an integrated campaign – Unlock Potential for the New You. Using digital platforms as well as mainstream media, the strategy included a mix of suitable learning opportunities and unique ways of engaging with our stakeholders. This successful campaign won Gold awards at 2022 South Asia SABRE Awards, ETBrandEquity Kaleido Awards, STAKES PR & Communications Excellence Awards 2022; Silver at Adgully IMAGEXX Awards 2022 and a Bronze at Campaign India PR Awards 2022. 

    Kick-starting the year with the first event of its kind, ENZ’s India team hosted the Women of the Future virtual event. To ensure maximum reach, we collaborated with leading digital platforms such as Femina India and Tweak India, among others, achieving more than 5.8 million impressions. More recently, the collaboration with popular Indian celebrity Soha Ali Khan is helping to create a stronger recall value of New Zealand among Indian study abroad aspirants.  

    2022 was also a year of big announcements from New Zealand such as the global I AM New Campaign, the reopening of New Zealand’s borders, new scholarships exclusively for Indian students, and a series of visits from New Zealand universities to name a few. Supported by our PR agency, Ruder Finn India, these announcements all made headlines in prominent Indian publications and portals including The Hindu, The Indian Express, Financial Express, and Education Times 

    “It’s always a challenge to be heard,” Ms Roy says.  

    “Some types of stories are much more likely to be picked up than others. For example, stories about our borders reopening, new research on Covid-19, scholarships for Indian students, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are of interest, as well as stories about Indian students or academics. 

    “Our team is always interested in success stories involving Indian students, and we look to New Zealand education providers to help us with sourcing these.  

    “It’s also important for institutions to be selective about the timing of their announcements, so journalists have the space to focus on each story, rather than choosing between multiple announcements at the same time.  

    “It's good to establish a single spokesperson for a given institution, and to ensure that Indian journalists seeking information get a timely response – if it’s a wide-ranging article they are likely to go ahead without input from New Zealand, which is a missed opportunity.” 

    The team is busy pulling together their plans for 2023, including how best to profile these initiatives to ensure high visibility.  

    “Finally, I would really encourage New Zealand tertiary education providers to think carefully about what Indian students and their families are seeking from investing in an international education experience, and how individually and as a sector we can work together to meet those expectations,” Ms Roy says.
