  • Confidence in Christchurch

    Murray Strong, Chair of the Canterbury Leadership Accord, joined Christchurch Educated Chair, Mike Hadley, in opening the day with a reminder of the Strategy vision and 2025 targets to lift student enrolments to 25,000 and economic value to $937 million. Murray noted that good progress is being made in a range of product and market development projects.

    The Chief Executive of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce, Peter Townsend, indicated that, with $100 million additional investment each week, the Christchurch rebuild will maintain its momentum for some time to come. Drawing on material produced by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, Peter emphasised the bright future for the city as a place to learn, live and work.

    Peter noted that; “The future of this region depends on the way we apply technology to our natural capital on a platform of product and service integrity”.

    He challenged our industry to ensure that “service integrity” is central to all we provide for our customers.

    Carl Everett, International Director, Christchurch Boys’ High School, commented; “There was a lot of talk about innovation, being flexible and thinking of new ways to approach the market, and then sharing all of that information together – especially here in Christchurch, where we are particularly good at sharing.” 

    Deanne Gath, International Director, Kaiapoi High School, particularly liked the definition of collaboration suggested by keynote speaker, Education Consultant, Chris Clay; “I like the idea that collaboration is working together to an end goal, but not necessary all doing the same thing.  It’s about not putting all our eggs in one basket, but trialling different things to see what works – with the end goal being that we all want to increase international student numbers in the Canterbury region,” she said.

    The Conference was closed by Christchurch City Councillor Jimmy Chen, representing Mayor Lianne Dalziel, who emphasised the contribution of international education to the region and the commitment of local government to support future growth aspirations.

  • NZ education features in Malaysia newspaper

    “New Zealand offers one of the top-ranked education systems in the world,” said Jane Goh, Education New Zealand (ENZ) Marketing and Strategic Relations Manager in Kuala Lumpur.

    “Unfortunately, the strengths of the New Zealand education system go relatively unrecognised or have low awareness in Malaysia, especially compared with its growing popularity in China and India.”

    Jane said this represents a significant opportunity in Malaysia for institutions prepared to invest time and effort into student recruitment and partnership development. She called Malaysia “a promising but largely untapped” market.

    “Malaysia is not only a vibrant market for recruiting international students but it is a popular international studying destination for Asian students and students from Islamic countries.”

    Jane said there needed to be a consistent, industry-wide strategic approach taken to the Malaysia market to highlight New Zealand education quality.

    “We decided to invest in a promotional project that included a series of key messages about New Zealand education, current students and alumni stories, as well as an overall picture of studying and living experience in New Zealand.”

    ENZ played a major role in this project and worked closely with The Star, the largest local English newspaper in circulation.

    “We wrote the content and edited several interviews into stories. The key intent was to position New Zealand as a world-class education destination.

    “We wanted the market to know about our internationally renowned universities, our learning experience and to hear from Malaysian students who have studied in New Zealand.”

    Jane said she was pleased to get support from the University of Auckland, Canterbury University, Lincoln University, University of Otago and Southern Institute of Technology. These universities contributed their angle of story and paid for advertising.

    The feature was published in late July, just before the series of NZ Education Fair and roadshows in Malaysia.

    “We then continued this effort with a media roundtable on the 2 August, to discuss the importance of holistic education in today’s employment market.”

  • Welcome to New Zealand scholarship winner announced

    This year’s Welcome to New Zealand scholarship marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and New Zealand. Each year these scholarships are used as an opportunity to promote New Zealand as a study destination and showcase the global connections between New Zealand and Germany through education. The scholarships are aimed at students who are interested in spending a semester abroad or studying for a full degree (bachelor’s or master’s) at a New Zealand university or Te Pūkenga. The scholarship covers part or the entire tuition fees.  

    Each year, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao awards one scholarship of €8,000 and six scholarships of €2,500. This year, we received 352 applications and the seven award winners were selected last month, representing a diverse range of study areas.   

    The winner of the main €8,000 scholarship is Felix Herold, who is currently studying Historical Linguistics and Spanish at the Friedrich- Schiller University Jena. Felix has a keen interest te reo Māori and Pacific languages. He will start his semester abroad in April 2024 at Victoria University of Wellington.  

     New Zealand is an attractive destination for German students looking for a high-quality education and an unbeatable student lifestyle abroad. The latest student visa numbers indicate a strong recovery in the number of German students heading to New Zealand for university study. A high level of interest was also seen recently at the GOstralia!-GOmerica! Down Under & USA Fair in Stuttgart, where ENZ joined NZ universities to engage with prospective students. The EAIE Conference, one of the largest international education events in the world, was held in Rotterdam this September and proved a great opportunity for all eight New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga to connect with key stakeholders and partners from across Europe. There is a positive outlook with growing numbers of students from Europe choosing to study in New Zealand and opportunities for diversification in areas such as Scandinavia.

  • How IEGF helped BIOZONE

    Considering applying for IEGF support? E-News caught up with IEGF recipient, Richard Allan, CEO of BIOZONE, at last year’s Edtech for Export conference in Wellington and found out how the co-funding grant helped them grow their business.

    ENZ: What is BIOZONE?

    BIOZONE International is a publishing house that specialises in the production of student and teacher resources for use in high school science programmes (grades 9-12) in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.  We also provide editions that are tailored to other international programmes, and BIOZONE books have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Polish, and Slovenian, as well as specific English-language editions compiled for Italy. BIOZONE’s goal is to improve science education performance in schools across the world.

    We produce a hybrid that’s part textbook, part study guide and part activity workbook all rolled into one. We use an infographic style of presenting information, with annotated diagrammatic explanations that have a lot of added value.  Our programme and pedagogical approach requires learners to apply what they’ve learned in a previous activity to a new situation, not merely recall data. It’s an enquiry-based approach.

    I was a biology teacher for 11 years before I became a publisher, so I have a pretty good idea of what’s required for teachers and students to succeed in the classroom environment. 

    ENZ: What has IEGF funding enabled you to do?

    We’ve been successful in two IEGF rounds – one in 2014 and one in 2015. The first lot of funding enabled us to market our new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) series in the US before other publishers got up to speed. The NGSS provides students with internationally-benchmarked science education.

    Being nimble and innovative is key to our success, and the grant meant we could significantly ramp up the number of state and national science teachers’ conferences we could attend. To give you an idea of the demand – at one conference in Los Angeles in December 2014 I had over 200 teachers trying to cram into a room that only had the capacity to hold 100 people, to hear my presentation.  They were sitting on the floor and around the edges of the room. That’s not untypical of what happened at other events, so we were obviously in the right place at the right time with the right product.

    ENZ: And the second grant?

    The second grant helped us enhance and improve our digital platform, and get it ready for commercial release. It made a huge difference in the timing of the launch and accelerated our development. 

    ENZ: How’s business going?

    It’s been hugely successful in our markets that, so far, include New Zealand, Australia, the US, and the UK.

    The opportunity for BIOZONE in the US is with the NGSS. One of our customers is Stuyvesant High School in New York City.  It’s a very prestigious school, with 34,000 kids competing for 850 places, and they bought our entire programme, which is a huge accolade from them. 

    We also won the ‘Best Supplemental Resource’ award for science, for the whole of US, at the education publishers’ ‘Content in Context’ conference in 2015 which was pretty cool. 

    ENZ: Do you have any words of advice for educators new to working in the edtech space?

    I think we should encourage our teachers to embrace education technology and provide them with the ability to upskill so they can use the tools. Many schools are already technologically savvy and are hungry for new ways of delivering curriculum using smart tools. 

    For educational publishers the digital landscape is evolving rapidly, not only with new opportunities and competitor activity, but also in the way teachers are wanting to engage with digital delivery of content.

    China urged to “go global” as NAFSA cohort returns 

    Chinese higher education institutions are encouraged to increase their global presence, as a significant number of Chinese universities attended the NAFSA conference in 2023. Despite geopolitical tensions, some American and European universities remain open to collaboration with Chinese institutions. Chinese HEIs are urged to diversify their portfolio and actively engage in international exchanges and cooperation. 

     

    North America 

    U.S. denied more than a third of student visa applications in FY2022 

    The USA denied 35% of student visa applications in 2022, resulting in an estimated $26.4 billion economic loss. Factors contributing to the increase include high demand, lack of non-immigrant intent, and a shift in source markets, with India surpassing China as the top source country. 

     

    South America 

    Brazil: Affordability will be key to unleashing demand for study abroad 

    The Brazilian economy is recovering, and there is a strong demand for study abroad among Brazilians. However, students and their families are facing financial challenges, making affordability a key factor in attracting Brazilian students. Scholarships, agent support, and work opportunities will be crucial in attracting Brazilian students in the coming years. 

     

    Europe 

    UK: operational shift in diversify drive mapped 
     
    90% of UK universities are diversifying international student recruitment, with changes in application processes, multiple rounds of applications, and the introduction of scholarships to adapt to the global market. Pre-CAS interviews, deposit requirements, and agent quality frameworks are proposed to maintain high recruitment standards and mitigate risks. 

     

    Africa 

    Collaboration aims to help make Africa’s youth an asset 

    African universities unite under the Education Collaborative to transform higher education, focusing on shared curricula, student exchanges, and joint research. The goal is to make Africa's youth an asset, benefiting at least one million students by 2030. The initiative promotes leadership collaboration, incentivizing staff innovation, and embraces a dynamic approach to sustainability for transformative change. 

  • eT4e - Ed Tech for Export conference

    The conference is organised by Grow Wellington with the support of Education New Zealand.

    This year's conference features four international speakers from business and academia - Lee Wilson, CEO of Filament Games in Wisconsin; Dr Erkki Sutinen, head of the edTech Research Group from the University of Eastern Finland; Jennifer Carolan, head of the NewSchools Seed Fund in California; and Hapara founder Jan Zawadzki.

    They will be joined by national speakers including Noelene Anderson, Pixelhouse; David Ellis, NZCER; Adrian Sallis, Vital English; David Cameron, LearnKo and Maru Nihoniho, Metia Interactive.

    Globally, education technology is one of the fastest growing sectors in education. Growth is being driven by increased student and teacher demand for engaging and effective learning solutions, the need to develop digital skills and digital citizenship in modern economies, and the entry of major technology corporates and investment entities into the business of education. Global expenditure is forecast to reach US$220b by 2017.

    “Asia- Pacific is expected to be one of the leading regions for growth of edtech. Education New Zealand is keen to work with those companies with smart content and technology to capitalise on that demand,” says Clive Jones, General Manager of Business Development at Education New Zealand.

    Education technology converts traditional education systems into automated virtual learning environments through web-based courses, assessment materials, online tutoring, professional development, and data management systems.

  • Brazilian students ready to travel to New Zealand

    Academic performance and class attendance were a key focus of the selection process for the students, who are between 14 and 16 years old. They were chosen to represent all regions of the state, which has a population of around 11 million people and an economy with a strong emphasis on agribusiness. 

    Their trip is scheduled for late July. Students will fly into Auckland, and most will travel on from there to other parts of New Zealand: Rotorua, Napier, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill. They will study in regular classes at New Zealand schools and stay with local families. The goal of the immersion is not only for them to get to experience the New Zealand education system, but also the way of life of New Zealanders, leisure options and New Zealand scenery.

    To mark the beginning of the study abroad process, the teenagers participated in a two-day orientation session in Curitiba, the capital city of Paraná state. At the event, they received information for their trip: how to prepare their luggage, necessary documents, items that can be taken, what to do when arriving in New Zealand, among other tips.

    Friends Maria Eduarda (14), Isabela Camargo (15), Gabriela Martins (15) and Ana Laura (14) paid close attention. They have never travelled abroad and are very excited about the chance to study in New Zealand. Maria Eduarda commented that she wants to “make many friends and keep in touch with them even after returning to Brazil”. Isabela hopes to “find a totally different culture, even school I think will be different”. 

    For Gabriela, the goal is “to learn a lot about New Zealand culture, especially about the Māori. I want to learn skills that will really prepare me for the future, as well as improve my English language.” Ana summarises her expectations for the trip: “I think I will return to Brazil with a new perspective on life.”

    Bruna de Natale, Education New Zealand's market development manager in Brazil, joined the event to present information on New Zealand education for the Brazilian students. She highlighted the quality of New Zealand’s educational institutions, their focus on useful skills for the future and explained how they work to prepare global citizens able to tackle issues such as sustainability, human rights and development. 

    The New Zealand schools that will be hosting the Brazilian students are: Central Southland College, Freyberg High School, Havelock North High School, Howick College, Hutt Valley High School, Kapiti College, Oxford Area School, Paraparaumu College, Rangiora High School, Selwyn College, and Western Heights High School. 

    This programme is fully funded by the Paraná Government, through Paraná’s Secretary of Education. 

     

  • High level of interest in PM's Scholarships

    “We’re particularly pleased in the level of interest, given outbound mobility has been paused since March 2020,” says ENZ’s Global Citizenship Manager Carla Rey Vasquez.  

    “Since the Prime Minister’s Scholarships reopened earlier this year, we’ve also tried hard to reach a wider range of people than previously. 

    “In this latest round, 17 percent of applicants are Māori while the age range is from 18 to 66 years old. We want to continue achieving greater diversity and inclusion, so that a wider range of people can have an international education experience, and the opportunity to develop their global citizenship skills and learn more about the language and culture of partner countries.”  

    The majority of applications (110) were for Prime Minister’s Scholarships to Asia, with South Korea the most popular destination country. Prime Minister’s Scholarships to Latin America received 55 applications, and the top destination country is Colombia.  

    An extra step in selecting the final recipients has been introduced this year. If they are shortlisted, applicants will be given 10 days to respond to four additional questions seeking more detailed information about their proposed programme.  

    Completed applications will then be considered by the selection panel, which is due to meet in late October.   

    The current Prime Minister’s Scholarships round is for individual applicants, following the first round that awarded scholarships to 30 groups in July.
