  • Get tips and tools at ENZ’s Seminar Series

    The seminars are being held in mid-March in six locations around the country. The morning and afternoon seminars are self-contained so you can opt to attend one or both. And, you can eat your lunch while watching the launch of the New Zealand School Story!

    Each seminar will be limited to 40 participants so be quick off the mark to register.

    Seminar 1 (9.30am- 11.30am): Personas: Understanding your Audience

    Knowing how your audience think and behave is the most important step in connecting with them. In this session ENZ’s General Manager of Marketing and Channel development, Paul Irwin, and International Brand Manager, Kaylee Butters, will share the New Zealand International Student Personas, which were developed as part of a global research project. We'll introduce you to tools you can use to improve your student recruitment and student experience.

    Lunchtime session

    Launching the New Zealand School Story (12noon – 1.00pm)

    In this lunchtime session we will launch the New Zealand School Story. We'll take you on the journey from the planning through to the development of the final suite of resources – all of which will be available on The Brand Lab. We’ll also suggest ideas as to how you can use this story in your own international marketing activity.

    Bring your own lunch – coffee and tea will be provided.

     

    Seminar 2 (1.30pm- 4.30pm):  Creating Effective Digital Marketing Programmes

    Led by the ENZ digital marketing team, this interactive session will focus on the basics of digital marketing. We'll show you how to develop an effective programme from strategy to set-up, through to launch, evaluation and optimisation. We'll help you to decide where to focus your efforts, using case studies from ENZ's own marketing activity.

  • Update from Immigration New Zealand

    Peak processing season in full swing 

    Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has seen an increase in applications submitted during September 2024, ahead of the 1 October visa fee and levy increase and because of our ‘apply early’ messaging.  

    In September 2023, approximately 3,104 international student visa applications were submitted and in September 2024, approximately 6,893 international student visa applications have been submitted, an increase of 122%. 

    Now that we are in our peak processing period, we expect these processing times to grow as we receive a higher volume of applications. Students should get their visa application in at least 3 months before they plan to travel to New Zealand for the first semester of 2025. 

    By now, most students should have received an offer of place from their chosen education provider. Anyone expecting to study in the first term of 2025 should apply now.  

    We acknowledge that some students who are waiting on key study documentation are unable to apply 3 months ahead. In these cases, they should apply as soon as they have all of their documents, but they need to be aware that late applications may not be processed in time for them to start studying.  

    Immigration New Zealand has three student processing sites in New Zealand, and has allocated more staff to processing student visas, compared to last year’s peak. 

    Ensure you submit a complete application 

    To avoid delays, we encourage students, agents and advisers to follow the advice in our student visa information sheets. If they do not include all the required documents when they submit their application, it may be declined.  

    Applications that have a statement of purpose letter written by the student, telling us about their personal circumstances and plans in New Zealand, help us assess their intent. If a student intends to apply for another visa after study, they should declare this. Students are allowed to apply for another visa after they finish studying.    

  • Brazil and New Zealand united on sustainability – check out the Kōrerorero: Voice of the Oceans

    Science, sustainability, and innovation were the focus of a special edition of Kōrerorero, which presented the Voice of the Oceans initiative. The online event, held in late August, showed the importance of education for building a more sustainable planet and highlighted the potential of cooperation between Brazil and Aotearoa New Zealand on issues related to the future of the planet. 

    Kōrerorero was produced by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) in Brazil and featured an introduction by Bruna de Natale, ENZ’s market development manager in Brazil. It was the first time that the event was broadcast in Portuguese, with simultaneous translation into English. 

    New Zealand Ambassador to Brazil, His Excellency Mr Richard Prendergast formally welcomed attendees to the event. 

    “The ocean and its resources are under pressure due to human activities, such as overfishing and pollution,” said Richard. “New Zealand’s approach to promoting a healthy ocean and ensuring good management of its resources involves education, to reinforce decision-making based on traditional knowledge and support development,” he added. 

    The kōrerorero featured the CEO of Voice of the Oceans, David Schurmann, who is an alumni from Aotearoa New Zealand – he has a degree in Cinema from Auckland University of Technology and, in addition to his work at Voice of the Oceans, is a filmmaker. His film “Little Secret”, from 2017, was chosen as the Brazilian representative in the competition for one of the places in the best foreign film category at the Academy Awards. He is part of the Schurmann Family, which since 1984 has carried out maritime expeditions around the world to promote sustainability. 

    Currently, the sailboat Kat, from Voice of the Oceans, is sailing around the world to raise awareness about the importance of combating pollution caused by plastic in the oceans. In November the boat will arrive in Auckland, at the end of its journey around the globe. The boat was named Kat after Kat Schurmann, David's kiwi sister. 

    “Voice of the Oceans was created because we are eyewitnesses of what has been happening in the oceans, which is plastic pollution,, warned David Schurmann during the Kōrerorero. “Over the last twenty years, as we've travelled around the world, we've noticed an increase in plastic waste in the seas,” he added. 

    David also explained the role Aotearoa New Zealand played in creating Voice of the Oceans: “Part of it all has a direct connection to New Zealand – I lived and studied there for six years, where I trained as a filmmaker in the 90s. It was during this period that I realised that the New Zealand population already had a very strong ecological awareness, and that was the seed that helped me create Voice of the Oceans”, said David. 

    In 2016, upon returning from a trip around the world, David and his family decided it was time to give the oceans a voice, to unite humanity around environmental protection. The objective of the initiative, according to him, is to unite people and countries in favor of practical solutions for the preservation of the seas. 

    Alexander Turra, professor at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo, classified as the best in Latin America in the latest edition of the QS World Rankings, also participated as a panelist in Kōrerorero. “We need to put the sea in people's heads, hearts and souls, so that they realize that we are intrinsically connected to it,, said Alexander. “The ocean is the foundation of what happens on the planet, so preserving the Earth starts there.” 

     

    Kōrerorero also had the contribution of New Zealand based Brazilian researcher João Souza, leader of the Moana Project, which seeks to understand the impact of climate change and extreme events on the main food sources linked to the ocean, in Aotearoa New Zealand. According to João, the project works through partnerships with the fishing industry and communities living in coastal regions, making use of their traditional knowledge. 

    “We have sensors on fishing nets, so every time fishermen throw that net into the sea, our sensors pick up signals. Thus, we are able to generate information about the ocean, even predicting the occurrence of extreme events. The knowledge acquired is shared with everyone involved”, explained João. 

    The debate was mediated by Jaqueline Gil, director of international marketing and sustainability at Embratur – Brazilian Tourist Board. There were 185 registrants before the event, which was accompanied live by 69 people, who received a certificate of participation. The Kōrerorero recording is available in Portuguese and English on the ENZ online platform. 

  • Online student visas save time

    The Immigration New Zealand service allows students to apply for their student visa, pay application fees and upload documents online. The time savings are impressive – the very first completed online application was received at 10.41pm NZ time on 29 August from a PhD student in Italy. The application landed in the London branch 15 minutes later and received a successful decision roughly three hours after that. 

    Since launching Immigration ONLINE – Student, INZ has continued to develop its stability and usability and is seeking to shift more students from the manual to online application channel. While the ability to apply online is currently only available to individuals, the “Apply on Behalf” capability will be added from mid-2015, allowing agents and advisors to use the platform.

    UK aims to double number of students going abroad by 2020

    Universities UK International has updated its strategy to boost outward mobility, which includes doubling the number of students who go abroad during their degree to 13.2% of total enrolments by 2020. In 2014/15, 6.6% of full-time, first degree, undergraduate, UK-domiciled students undertook an international placement. The strategy outlines six objectives to achieve the goal, such as building capacity to facilitate outward mobility, sharing best practice, and providing a collective voice for the sector.

    Vocational training drains State budget

    IIT heads are worried about the quality of India’s engineers

  • New Zealand and Korea: new opportunities

    When the Korea New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (KNZFTA) came into force on 20 December it included three education and training-related programmes of interest to New Zealand’s international education industry.

    The agreement included three education and training related programmes:

    1. The Korea New Zealand Agricultural Cooperation Scholarships (KNZACS) – six postgraduate scholarships, two each in the areas of agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

    2. A schools visit programme – 150 short-term high school scholarships each year for three years.

    3. Primary Sector Training Visas (PSTV) - 50 visas allocated each year.

    The first two opportunities are scholarship programmes jointly funded by the New Zealand and Korean governments and a Memorandum of Agreement has been signed between ENZ and the Korean Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS) to implement the arrangements. 

    Agricultural cooperation scholarships

    This postgraduate scholarships programme will provide for six scholarships to be awarded to Korean students to study in New Zealand. Four PhD scholarships will be awarded in 2016 in the fields of forestry and agriculture. Two further scholarships in fisheries will be awarded in 2017 and are open to both PhD and Master’s programmes.

    An independent expert panel has been established to select applicants for the first round of the scholarship, with advertising of the scheme to commence in Korea in April. Applications will close on 8 July.

    Schools visits programme

    The schools visits programme will see 150 high school students from rural regions of South Korea selected to come to a rural or semi-rural areas of New Zealand for an eight week period from July this year.

    Canterbury, Waikato and Nelson-Marlborough have been chosen to participate in this programme.  Ten schools in each region will host five students each.

    The Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) will operationalise the programme on behalf of ENZ. If you are a school in the above regions, a Code signatory, a member of SIEBA, and wish to be involved in this initiative we encourage you to contact SIEBA.

    Primary sector training visa (PSTV) 

    The New Zealand government has established an annual quota of 50 primary sector training visas which allow the Korean government to place students with New Zealand training providers in the areas of agriculture and fisheries.  

    The training programme will involve three months’ English language and vocational training in relevant courses, followed by up to nine months’ paid internship placement in a New Zealand work place. 

    ENZ is not involved in the implementation of this programme, however we are able to introduce interested and experienced providers to EPIS for programme development and implementation. 

    The Korean Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS) is currently seeking interested providers for the fisheries programme. Eight students are allocated for this stream. If your institution is able to offer a three month English and fisheries training programme, and have established relationship with fisheries workplaces for a minimum of six months’ paid internship placement, please get in touch with Cecily Lin who can connect you with EPIS.

    Preliminary information is provided below: 

    1. What are the academic backgrounds of these students?

    The students will be either current students in fisheries high schools or universities, or recent graduates from these institutions within the last two years.  The students’ majors will be directly relevant to fishery studies.

    All students will be aged 18 or over. 

    2. What are their levels of English proficiency?

    The applicants will be required to demonstrate an appropriate level of English to communicate with their local employer and teacher. EPIS will grant scholarships to students via international certified English tests e.g. TOEIC, TOEIC SPEAKING, OPIC. 

    3. What is the intended outcome of the three months’ training programme? 

    To achieve an appropriate level of job performance skills in their work and improved English language skills. 

    4. What is the intended length and level of internship?

    At least six months immediately after the training.

    5. What is the expected level of payment to the students during the internship? 

    The payment must be at the New Zealand minimum wage or above.

    6. What are the requirements for participating education providers?

    Providers must be Category One.

  • PM mission advances New Zealand and China education relationship

    The New Zealand Education Connect event on 20 June at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing brought together leading Chinese government representatives, institutional partners, education agents, and alumni to strengthen people-to-people links and celebrate collaboration.  

    The event programme was packed, with nine Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed between New Zealand and Chinese counterparts, and another MoU signed between Victoria University of Wellington and Fudan University on 19 June. 

    Providers from across the tertiary education sector signed the MoUs – with Victoria University of Wellington, Unitec, NMIT and UP Education’s University of Auckland International College and New Zealand Tertiary College formalising partnerships. 

    These agreements cover a mix of in-market delivery, joint programmes, and initiatives to grow student mobility between New Zealand and China.  

    This builds on the now over 60 approved joint education programmes and institutes recognised by the China Ministry of Education between New Zealand and Chinese institutions, and other education partnerships across early childhood education, vocational training, higher education, and research areas.  

    The New Zealand Education Connect event had senior leaders officially launching New Zealand’s Country of Honour campaign for the upcoming China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE), China's largest platform for international education, due to take place in October this year.  

    ENZ’s Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, launches the Country of Honour campaign for New Zealand at CACIE alongside Prime Minister Luxon and CEAIE’s Secretary General Jun Yang.

    ENZ Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, said it’s exciting to see advancement of the partnerships New Zealand providers have built with their Chinese counterparts. 

    We’re eager to see the outcomes of the new agreements formalised at New Zealand Education Connect and look forward to deepening our bilateral ties by leading a delegation to CACIE later this year, she said.

    The Russian government has upped its international student quota for universities to 200,000 and put in place plans to simplify visas for students. The plans are part of an ongoing drive to boost the global profile of Russian higher education. The number of scholarships awarded to international students to study at Russian universities will also rise from 15,000 to 20,000, covering both tuition fees and a monthly stipend.

    A pause in international students?

    A new survey reveals that four in 10 U.S. colleges have experienced a decline in international applicants for the Fall 2017 term. The survey of around 250 colleges and universities was conducted in February, and more than three-quarters of institutions surveyed expressed concern about future enrolment. The most significant decline in applicants came from the Middle East, with a reported 39 percent decrease in undergraduate applications and a 31 percent decrease in graduate applications.

  • Global Agent Webinar: Understanding best practice for student visa applications

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and Immigration New Zealand (INZ) collaborated to organise a webinar for education agents in early March on best practice for lodging student visa applications.

    The webinar was well received, with 1,364 attendees from around the world over two sessions scheduled to accommodate for different time zones.

    The session provided education agents with the latest information on visa processing, student visa insights, types of student visas, financial requirements and best practice for submitting student visa applications. It also featured a robust question and answer segment where pre-submitted questions from attendees were addressed.

    INZ Engagement Partner (Acting), Mark Andrew, said the webinar was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with education agents and answer their questions.

    “This webinar helps ensure education agents have the most up to date information and guidance to support more efficient processing and favourable outcomes based on real life examples and trends. Immigration New Zealand and Education New Zealand working in partnership to deliver the Global Agent Webinar is key to ensure a positive customer experience for agents, applicants and the wider sector.”
