  • Letter from the CE: Navigating our changing world

    A huge thank you to all those who joined us in Auckland for 2019’s NZIEC. The conference was filled with fascinating presentations, promising new connections and enlightening discussions. It was, however, the collaborative spirit, warm reception and energy of those who attended and presented that made this year’s conference our best yet.  

    Like many sectors, we are now operating in a state of constant change in terms of students’ needs and wants – and the challenges and opportunities that stem from this was a focus of discussion across the three days of events. NZIEC’s keynote speakers – Guy Ryan, Dr Lisa Coleman, and Professor Chris Gallavin – presented an impressive range of perspectives and ideas across areas including youth leadership and the role of global connectedness, inclusion and diversity, and the value of working together across different sub-sectors.  

    Our environment is also changing. NZIEC 2019 followed an announcement by Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins, about reforms for vocational education in New Zealand. The reforms are intended to ensure the vocational education sector continues to be globally relevant as the nature of work and the skills required in the workplace shifts. Seven key changes will be made, the major one being the establishment of a single public network of vocational training institutes.     I would like to reiterate the Minister’s reassurance that the changes will be introduced gradually over several years. International students can continue to enrol here with confidence, knowing we are in the process of making their education experience even better. At ENZ we are looking at the opportunities a strong national identity for New Zealand’s vocational training presents offshore.

    Lastly, the conference was a chance to acknowledge our strong education relationship with Japan, our country of honour. The nation is the third-largest student source country for New Zealand’s international sector. In 2017, for example, we had 10,272 Japanese students study here. I am confident this relationship will continue to deepen with lots of activity planned in the year ahead.

  • The International Education Strategy – one year on

    Goal one: Delivering an excellent education and student experience

    Progress on goal one includes:

    • Launching NauMai NZ. ENZ has launched NauMai NZ, an online platform providing accurate, relevant information to help international students before they arrive and while they’re studying in New Zealand.
    • Reviewing migrant exploitation. MBIE is leading a cross-agency review of the exploitation of temporary migrant workers and international students.
    • Supporting wellbeing initiatives. MoE administers an annual funding round for international student wellbeing initiatives. Initiatives that have been funded have had very positive outcomes for students.
    • Strengthening English language requirements. NZQA has strengthened English language proficiency requirements for international students.
    • Relaunching ENZRA. The ENZ Recognised Agency programme was relaunched in November 2018.
    • Introducing new protections. MoE has introduced amendments to the Code of Practice including new contract and disciplinary protections, clearer requirements for residential caregiver safety checks, and more detailed requirements for monitoring education agents.

    Goal two: Achieving sustainable growth

     Progress on goal two includes:

    • Forming an innovation-focused group. A new pan-sector working group will inform the development of new education products that support the Strategy’s goals.
    • Refresh of the Think New brand. ENZ has refreshed our Think New brand strategy, including creating the identity ‘I am New’.

    Goal three: Developing global citizens

     Progress on goal three includes:

    • Developing an outbound mobility strategy. MoE has begun work on a new outbound mobility strategy. Objectives include increasing participation in exchange programmes by groups that have been historically underrepresented, including Māori and Pasifika students and students in lower decile schools.
    • Focusing on international graduate employability. A new ENZ report, Employer Perceptions of Hiring International Graduates, found New Zealand SME employers value the keen attitude and positive contribution made by New Zealand-educated international graduates.

  • Letter from the CE: Kia kaha te Reo Māori


    Last week, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori language week, was an important reminder for us all that Te Reo Māori is a core part of who we are as New Zealanders, and what makes Aotearoa unique.  

    With this in mind, I am delighted to share Education New Zealand’s new Māori name: Manapou ki te Ao 

    Manapou means supporting and sustaining life, which allows growth and progression, while ki te Ao means to the world. Nourishing and empowering, a New Zealand education enables students to flourish and creates the world’s next generation of problem solvers.  

    Manapou ki te Ao encompasses the Māori principles of manaakitanga (the caring and valuing of others), kaitiakitanga (carer and guardianship of the environment and resources), whakawhanaungatanga (process of establishing meaningful relationships through cultural respect, connectedness and engagement) and aroha.   

    Our new name reflects Education New Zealand’s role in growing and supporting the international education sector – ensuring all students can thrive and share their skills and knowledge with the world.  

    Many international students find their experience of Māori language and culture a highlight of their time in Aotearoa. One example is Hailey Suinaof the Cochiti Pueblo Indian Reservation in New Mexico, who won a $15,000 Education New Zealand and Go Overseas scholarship to spend a semester studying at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). 

    The name’s development has been a rewarding journey. It will become part of ENZ’s corporate logo, and you will see it more and more over the next few months. Even more importantly, it will underpin everything we do. And we want you to feel ownership of it too. Please share our new name with your whānau, colleagues and friends.

  • Submissions open: Do you know an exceptional international student in Wellington?

    Applications for the Wellington International Student Excellence Awards opened Wednesday, 18 September. 

    Established by WellingtonNZ, these awards recognise the achievements and contributions of international students from around the region.  

    We would love to hear about your successes during your studies in Wellington – whether academically, in the arts, sports, or in the community. Make sure you encourage any international students or graduates in Wellington to enter.

  • Introducing our joint work programme with Immigration New Zealand

    The joint work programme will support the sector by sharing clear, consistent and relevant information. Aims include encouraging decision-ready applications coming into the immigration system, improving processing times, reducing pressure on the system and attracting genuine students.  

    First-time international student visa application checklist 

    The joint work programme has developed a student visa application checklist for people applying for a student visa as an international student for the first time

    The checklist provides a step-by-step guide for students. It will help first-time applicants avoid missing out information and including the correct supporting evidence needed so INZ is able to make decisions more quickly.    

    Not only does it include general application information, it also has further information for eight countries that require specific forms of verifications.    

    The checklist was developed in conjunction with ENZ and peak bodies and this feedback has been incorporated into the final version.

  • Wellington International Students Excellence Awards showcase the value of international education

    Established in 2016, the Wellington International Student Excellence Awards, held by WellingtonNZ, recognise high-achieving international students based in the Wellington region.

    Awardees included Academic Excellence Award winner and Whitireia NZ/WelTec student Matthew Hitchener from England, who was honoured for his project introducing pelvic binders to paramedic services in Wellington. Pelvic binders are commonly used overseas to compress the pelvis to prevent bleeding in those with a pelvic fracture. After a successful trial on a LifeFlight helicopter, the binders will soon be launched on all Wellington Free Ambulances.

    WellingtonNZ Workforce and Business Growth Manager, Matt Carrere, says the awards show both what the Wellington region can offer international students, as well as the vast contribution students make to the region in return.

    “Wellington is an interconnected, social and diverse region where international students learn and thrive. It’s unsurprising that many choose to remain here after their studies to pursue a career.”

    The awards also recognised individuals and organisations that work to welcome international students to the region.

    PhD candidate at Victoria University of Wellington, Anna-Marie White, received the Internationalisation Award – Domestic Student for organising regular PhD writing workshops (or ‘bootcamps’) with international students.

    She was nominated by a group of PhD candidates from around the world, who said: “Anna has expressed her manaakitanga to her international friends and has increased our feeling of home, our love of New Zealand, and our passion for our research. Bootcamp will always be the highlight of our PhD studies, and Anna is a member of the Wellington community that you can be incredibly proud of.”

    This year’s Internationalisation Workplace Award went to Wellington tech company MarginFuel for offering employment and internships to 20 international students and graduates.

    “MarginFuel offers the students opportunities to further their careers, and in return we have found the students are intelligent, hard-working and add a rich layer to our team culture,” CEO Andrew Pascoe says. “New hires especially comment on how culturally diverse we are, and how this adds so much to the organisation.”

  • Update from Immigration New Zealand

    Planning for the next student visa application peak

    Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is now entering the next peak of student visa applications. 

    INZ say they are in a good space to process the predicted volume of student visa applications. As part of planning, they have validated their predicted numbers of applications with the sector.  

    "Thanks to the sector peak bodies who circulated the survey on our behalf, we received 99 responses and now have information on the numbers of offers of place already issued to potential students. This has helped us match our resources to the predicted volume for the peak,” INZ National Manager Education and Tourism Jeannie Melville says.

    “The queue of student applications from earlier this year has been cleared in Mumbai. Applications are now being allocated to an Immigration Officer for assessment within ten working days.”

    Getting applications in early

    INZ strongly recommends potential students continue to submit their applications as early as possible – at least eight weeks ahead of a person’s intended travel date.

    However, applications can be submitted up to four months ahead of intended travel.

    First time visa application checklist

    There is now a checklist available to help people submitting a student visa application for the first time. It provides guidance on what they need to do to ensure they are submitting a decision-ready application, which should reduce the likelihood of it missing information.

  • Talented young Kiwis awarded PM’s Scholarships to Asia and Latin America

    This round of scholarships supports 252 recent graduates or current students to undertake study, research or internships at institutions in Latin America and Asia, including Brazil, Mexico, China, India and Japan.

    Awardees are in a range of fields including languages, law, business, health, sustainability and the arts. They will attend for periods ranging from four weeks to one year.

    The scholarships enable a wide range of educational experiences, including: a cultural exchange and internship programme for Māori and Pasifika graduates in Vietnam; a global business and innovation programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shenzhen, China, for a group of undergraduate business students; an internship with an Indian charity supporting street children and another with the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development in Korea. 

    ‘’These scholarships enable talented young New Zealanders to enrich their education offshore, adding international experience and global perspectives to their qualifications,’’ Chris Hipkins said.

    “The quality of the awardees, from all over New Zealand and from a wide range of tertiary institutions, is impressive. I am sure they will serve as excellent ambassadors for our country.

    ‘’Longer term, the international networks and cross-cultural skills that they bring back home will enhance and strengthen our future workforce. Their experiences benefit New Zealand at a national level and improve our ability to engage and connect with Asia and Latin America.

    ‘’The Prime Minister’s Scholarships support the Government’s goal of a thriving and globally connected New Zealand through world-class international education,” Chris Hipkins said.

    Of the successful applicants in this round, 114 will travel on an individual scholarship and 138 will travel as part of a group. They come from a range of tertiary institutions nationwide, including the University of Auckland (69 awardees); Victoria University of Wellington (41); Massey University (40); Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design (16) and the Southern Institute of Technology (nine). There are also 10 recipients from the education NGO, TupuToa.

  • Kiwi scholars to gain international skills

    The scholarships, funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, support recent graduates or current students to undertake study, research or internships at institutions in Latin America and Asia, including Brazil, Mexico, China, India and Japan.

    Awardees in this round (2019-2020 Round Two) are in fields including languages, law, business, health, sustainability and the arts. They will attend for periods ranging from four weeks to one year.

    The scholarships enable a wide range of educational experiences, including: a cultural exchange and internship programme for Māori and Pasifika graduates in Vietnam; a group of arts and design students who will attend a course on the economic and cultural significance of modest fashion at the Islamic Fashion Institute in Indonesia; and an internship with an Indian charity supporting the health and education of street children in Jaipur.  

    ‘’A key aspect of international education is sending New Zealand learners out to the world to gain all-important global skills and experience,’’ says ENZ’s Director Student Experience and Global Citizens, Partnerships and Marketing, Sahinde Pala.

    “When they return, they bring new perspectives and expertise with them, helping to grow New Zealand’s international networks and inter-cultural awareness.’’

    Most awardees undertake programmes that can be credited back to their New Zealand qualification. Similarly, international internships are usually part of their home institution’s work integrated learning programme, Sahinde says.

    Background

    PMSA and PMSLA support the Government’s International Education Strategy: to build a thriving and globally connected New Zealand through international education.

    A total of 2,399 young New Zealanders have taken part since the programme was launched in 2013, initially for Asia (PMSA), and extended to Latin American (PMSLA) in 2016.

    How to apply

    There are two rounds of PMSA and PMSLA scholarships offered each year, in August and March.

    Applications for the next PMSA and PMSLA round (2019-2020 Round Two) open from mid-January 2020 and close on 30 March 2020. More information on the application process can be found on our website. Institutions are encouraged to contact ENZ to discuss potential group applications.
