  • Student Visa Dashboard for December 2016

    Student visas only capture students who enter New Zealand with a student visa. These students are mostly those who are planning to study for more than three months.

    Student visa data is a reliable indicator of whether students are entering, remaining or leaving New Zealand. The dashboard contains detailed tables and graphs on the numbers of both first-time and total international student visas issued, with commentary on the trends to date.

    The December 2016 dashboard includes summary level trends comparing to the three year average, year-to-date and the same month in the previous year. It also includes more detailed breakdowns by markets, sectors and regions focusing on year-to-date and monthly trends.

  • Regional Partners’ workshop a triumph

    In August, Ms Favaloro joined an Education New Zealand regional partners’ workshop to lead sessions on pathways, stakeholder engagement and the art of visual storytelling.

    The 15 regional education organisations represented shared their insights, learned about regional education trends and heard about Study Melbourne’s initiatives and success.

    “It was absolutely inspirational to spend time with Jane. She really gave me a sense of what we should be aspiring to and how we might get there,” said Bree Loverich, Programme Manager for Canterbury Leadership Accord and Christchurch Educated.

    Study Melbourne was established in 2006. For over 10 years, international education has been Victoria's largest services export industry, generating more than $46 billion for the economy. Victoria is now considered Australia’s designated ‘Education State’ with over 175,000 students studying there annually.

    Greg Scott, Regional Programme Manager for ENZ, believes there are many reasons for providers to connect with their regional education organisations, chief among them:

    1. Regional growth offers real benefits for education providers, regional economies, communities and students.

    2. Education providers can grow their international programme by sharing regional marketing economies of scale, and gaining greater access in international markets using regional partnerships.

    3. Regions offer distinctive opportunities for students to align their learning to employment opportunities and pathways to skilled residency.

    "It was a pleasure to spend time learning how teams can convert a 'barrier' into an 'opportunity' when put into a room for a day and encouraged to engage,” said Jane Favaloro about the workshop.

    “I look forward to hearing of the successes and, in the not so distant future, creating a superior student experience that targets specific international markets and enables mobility between Victoria and New Zealand."

  • Study abroad promo in US

    Study Abroad Month, led by our Washington DC-based team, targeted the study advisors at United States universities, who support students with their study abroad plans. A series of videos were published each week and sent to key contacts, including a closing video from Education Minister Chris Hipkins. 

    Lewis Gibson, Field Director North America at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao, says study abroad students are our main source of international students from the US.  

    “Pre-Covid-19, around 350,000 tertiary students each year spent a semester overseas as part of their degree. We’re looking to increase our share of this group. 

    “In normal times, US institutions and study abroad advisors rely on the voices of New Zealand alumni, who can share their experiences with other people on campus and build interest in a New Zealand study experience,” he says. 

    “We needed to do something different this year, because our borders had been closed so there weren’t the alumni students available on campus. We also needed a good way to remind study advisors about New Zealand’s unique education offering.”  

    Lewis says feedback from institutions in the US has been very positive, and they are looking forward to seeing students travel again to New Zealand. Some of the comments received included the following: 

    • “Thank you so much for letting us know about this exciting project! I just shared the New Zealand Study Abroad Month YouTube channel with our spring 2023 applicants... We are thrilled to nominate over 15 students to our outstanding partner universities in New Zealand ...for the first time in over two years!”  

    • “Thank you for sharing this information. I watched Fiona’s video for VUW and I am sharing it with several students who are deciding which NZ institution to attend for Term 1 via TEAN.  I’ll be certain to watch future videos and do the same with those.”   
    • “We are so grateful of the opportunities you provide our students, and our tight partnership together.”  

    “In case anyone is wondering, we initially intended to run the promotion for four weeks, hence the name, ‘Study Abroad Month’. But with the participation of so many universities, and the inclusion of additional videos reflecting the voices of students, it made more sense to expand the promotion to six weeks.”  

    Before our borders closed, the US was our sixth largest source of international students, with most students seeking to enrol in university-level study here. Study Abroad Month aimed to attract students to New Zealand from the US spring semester 2023 onwards.

  • Supporting PTEs to grow internationally

    The recent 2024 ITENZ Conference in September provided the ideal platform for Sharon-May McCrostie, Acting General Manager of Sector Engagement for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) to highlight some of ENZ’s work to support Private Training Establishments (PTEs) 

    Strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a preferred destination for international students studying with PTEs by taking a collaborative approach with the subsector has been key, said Sharon-May. 

    This includes how ENZ works with PTEs to develop the subsector by organising roadshows, in-market education fairs, events and webinars. We also have a strong pipeline of activity ahead, working with PTEs through strategic marketing, partnerships, capability building, with a focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences,” added Sharon-May.

    During her presentation, Sharon-May highlighted four key points:

    • Expanding recruitment efforts in key markets such as India, China, Viet Nam, Latin America, and the Philippines, will be incredibly important in the diversification of the international student base. This will also be vital in achieving the New Zealand government’s goal to double export earnings from international education to $4.4 billion by 2027 and meeting the student enrolment target of 85,000 by 2024/25 (up from 69,000). 
    • ENZ conducts targeted marketing campaigns that aim to boost visibility and awareness of a New Zealand education. Providers can leverage ENZ marketing support in their international journey through tools like BrandLab for developing promotional materials and AgentLab for connecting with education agents. 
    • ENZ provides valuable market insights through IntelliLab, offering data on trends, student preferences, and enrolment statistics to help providers make informed decisions. 
    • Lastly, to improve the student experience, ENZ provides resources such as NauMai NZ and conducts an annual Student Experience Survey, giving providers insights into how they can better meet the needs of international students. 

    Sharon-May ended by confirming ENZ’s commitment to the subsector. 

    “We are committed to providing ongoing support for PTE providers through research, resource and capability building.  We look forward to continuing our efforts in supporting the growth of this very important part of New Zealand’s international education eco-system,” said Sharon-May.
