• Scholarships open for students from Europe

  A new scholarship programme designed to increase awareness of New Zealand as a study destination to students in Europe is open.

  The “Dream NEW” scholarships target confident, adventurous European university students who are competent enough in English to undertake study at a New Zealand university. The scholarships will appeal to students who like to travel and experience different cultures, while improving their English language skills.

  Jointly funded by Education New Zealand and Universities New Zealand, “Dream NEW” offers eight scholarship places – one at each New Zealand university.

  The scholarships are valued at up to NZD$ 12,500 (approx. 7,500 €) and will cover tuition fees for eight students undertaking a Study Abroad programme in Semester One, in February and March 2017.

• Upcoming VAC openings in Jakarta, Singapore and Bali

  From 18 March in Indonesia, and 25 March in Singapore, Immigration New Zealand offices in Jakarta and Singapore will no longer receive visa applications.
  
  All applications that were previously received by these offices should be sent by mail or courier to the New Zealand Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Jakarta from 18 March, or Bali from 22 April, and from 25 March in Singapore.
  
  Applications can be submitted to the relevant VAC by mail or in person.

• How New Zealand education compares around the world

  Education at a Glance provides comparable national statistics measuring the state of education worldwide. The report analyses the education systems of 34 OECD member countries, as well as Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.  Most of the recent data in the report relates to 2011.

  The findings show New Zealand is performing well.

  In terms of international education, key findings include:

  • New Zealand has the 11th largest market in absolute market share terms (at 1.7 percent), about the same as last year, but much higher than its share in 2000 (0.4 percent)

  • In 2011, we ranked fourth in terms of proportion of tertiary-level students who were international (16 percent). In particular, we had the highest proportion of diploma-level students who were international (at 21 percent ), and the fifth highest (with 13 percent ) at degree level

  • The level of international doctorate students has continued its significant rise since 2005 (since the introduction of domestic-fees policy). Nearly 40 percent  of doctorate-level students were international in 2011 (the third highest level after UK and Switzerland).

  The report shows that New Zealand is:

  • investing 7.3 percent of its GDP in education - the seventh highest in the OECD

  • ·investing 20 percent of all public expenditure in education, which is the second highest percentage in the OECD

  • in the top third of countries for participation in early childhood education - 95 percent of four year olds enrolled in 2011

  • in the top 10 of the OECD for the highest proportion of tertiary qualified adults, with 39 percent of 25 to 64 year-olds and 47 percent of 25 to 34 year-olds in New Zealand having a diploma or higher qualification

  • increasing significantly the number of 15 to 19 year olds enrolled in study - 81.5 percent in 2011, up from 74 percent in 2008.

• Entries open for New Zealand India Sports Scholarships
  “With New Zealand co-hosting the Cricket World Cup next year, a sport that Indians are especially enthusiastic about, this scholarship will raise awareness of New Zealand expertise in sport,” Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Steven Joyce says.
   
  “India has one of the world’s largest economies and total trade with New Zealand currently exceeds $1 billion per year. The Government is focused on developing our relationship with India further so that it becomes a core trade, economic and political partner for New Zealand.
   
  “Education is a key part of this activity, with Indian students making up the second largest and fastest growing source of international students to New Zealand.”
   
  Mr Joyce says the scholarship programme is one of several activities underway to deepen New Zealand’s education relationship with India following a steady flow of Ministerial visits over the last few years.
   
  “Many of these initiatives have a focus on increasing the quality and level of qualifications studied by Indian students here.”
   
  The New Zealand India Sports Scholarships are open to Indian citizens enrolling to study bachelor or postgraduate qualifications in New Zealand beginning in 2015. Successful recipients will have their tuition fees funded for the first year of full-time study and also receive some support for living costs.
   
  As a country with an envious track record in sport and a top quality education system, New Zealand is well placed to offer courses in sports related fields such as sport management, coaching, sports nutrition and exercise science. 
   
  Not only will qualifications in this field help Indian students gain rewarding careers for themselves, they will also serve the ambitions of both sporting nations.
  New Zealand is committed to the New Zealand-India Prime Ministers’ Education Initiative and sporting education links are a valuable stream for continued engagement with India.

  A global survey of parents with school or college-aged children finds 41 percent  would consider study abroad for their child, including 65 percent in the UAE, 60 percent in Indonesia, 55 percent in India, and 54 percent in China.   Data in the latest 'Patterns and Trends' analysis from Universities UK shows that the Chinese youth population is projected to shrink by a quarter from 2015 to 2025. As China has become the dominant source of international students, this projection is bad news for Western universities that rely on fees paid by Chinese international students.

  Survey shows long-term impacts of language travel

  According to a survey of 2,000 former language learners, 90 percent of respondents said face-to-face interaction with other people was the most valuable language learning experience, such as interacting with their host family, fellow students and teachers. Overwhelmingly, most survey respondents had travelled to study English (62 percent).

  Malaysia faces low female participation in STEM sectors

  In 2015, women made up less than half of the graduates in Malaysia in engineering and technology. Dr Halimaton Hamdan from the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) said “while there are no specific programmes to promote STEM among girls, to spur interest in science and mathematics, ASM has started inquiry-based science education, as well as getting students involved in industry placements and training.

• Indian scholars awarded at Auckland summit

  The awardees are Indian students currently studying at New Zealand universities in the fields of business, design and STEM-related programmes (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).  

  Some 19 of the total 31 recipients were honoured in person by Tertiary Education Minister Paul Goldsmith at the India New Zealand Business Council (INZBC) Edutech Summit 2017 on 4 August. 

  They are recipients of the first round of the NZEA awards, which offers each recipient a scholarship of NZ$5,000 towards their first year tuition fees. 

  Speaking at the summit, ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the students were important to New Zealand’s broader relationship with India. 

  “These top young scholars will further strengthen ties between our two countries by contributing to a broader exchange of ideas in our universities, building our respective research capabilities, and enriching New Zealand culture.”   

  The summit featured industry heads and policy makers from both countries. Speakers included New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English, Ambarish Datta, Managing Director and CEO of the Bombay Stock Exchange Institute and Mohandas Pai, Chairperson of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry from India. 

  The 2018 round of NZEA will go live on the Study in New Zealand website on 1 September 2017, with applications closing 15 November 2017. 

  NZEA is the first joint scholarship scheme between Education New Zealand and all eight New Zealand universities for a specific country.

• New enrolment guide for students

  Enrolment information has been the second-most requested content on SiNZ social media channels, so ENZ has created an enrolment guide to sit on the SiNZ website.

  The guide has two sections: how to apply to study at a primary, secondary or English language school, and how to apply to study at a tertiary institution.

  Lucia Alarcon, ENZ International Digital Project Manager, says the guide provides step by step information on the enrolment process for each of these levels of study.

  “We’ve included brief information about application procedures, including required documents, application fees, interviews and English language assessments. 

  “We make it clear that the information is a general guide only, with procedures varying between institutions.”

  The enrolment guide is part of ENZ’s new 5 Steps to Studying in New Zealand process, which breaks up the study abroad journey to help students understand how to get started.

  The 5 Steps encourage students to check out the practical content we’ve added to SiNZ in recent months. Along with the enrolment guide, the new content includes our Cost of Living and Explore NZ pages.

• Thailand fair 2018 is on the horizon

  TIECA (Thai International Educational Consultants Association) is Thailand’s peak body of education agents with more than 70 members. In November, it will run the 33^rd TIECA Study Abroad Expo.

  Jaruwan Pongjaruwat, ENZ’s Programme Manager for Thailand, said as the biggest fair led by agents in Thailand, the expo is a key event for all institutions interested in meeting Thai students and networking with member agencies.

  “TIECA has a very good connection with the Thai school network, and teachers are a big influence on bringing their students to the TIECA expo every year,” she said.

  “It is important to have New Zealand institutions joining this event to show New Zealand’s commitment to the Thai market.

  “It’s also a good opportunity for institutions to expand their connections with TIECA agents and to interact with students face-to-face.”

  The expo will include seminars about education systems in different countries and will focus on high schools, language schools and exchange organizations from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, UK, US and other countries.

  The 2017 expo had more than 700 visitors; 60 percent were school students looking to study abroad while the remainder were looking for language schools and tertiary education.

• Thailand education expo coming in October

  TIECA (Thai International Educational Consultants Association) is Thailand’s only peak body of education agents. It provides quality assurance of more than 70 agent members and ensures high counselling standards for Thai students seeking to study abroad. 

  The 34^th TIECA Study Abroad Expo will run in Bangkok in October, where education providers will meet prospective students and network with TIECA agents for future collaboration.

  Jaruwan Pongjaruwat, ENZ’s Programme Manager for Thailand, says the TIECA expo is the best agent-led event in Thailand, making it important to have New Zealand representation.

  “Having New Zealand institutions join this event shows New Zealand’s commitment to the Thai market. It’s also a good opportunity for institutions to expand their connections with TIECA agents and interact with students face-to-face – especially in Thailand where agents still play a major role,” says Jaruwan.

  “TIECA Expo also runs seminars on the latest insights on the Thai market, providing useful recommendations for institutions to increase enrolments.”

  The Expo’s primary focus is high schools, language schools, universities and exchange organisations from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, the United States and many other countries.

  The 2018 Expo had around 400 visitors; 60 percent were school students looking to study abroad, and 45 percent of this group would make a study travel decision within 1-2 years.

• ‘Welcome to New Zealand’ Scholarship applications are open!

  Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is happy to announce that it is now accepting applications for its ‘Welcome to New Zealand’ scholarships. The scholarships include an award of EUR 5,000 and a return flight with Air New Zealand to study with New Zealand and are intended to contribute to tuition fees and school or university-related costs.  

  Students from France, Italy and Germany are eligible to apply for the scholarships. There is one scholarship available for each of the following categories: 

  • Tertiary students from France who wish to study at a New Zealand higher education institution for at least one semester. 

  • Tertiary students from Germany who wish to study at a New Zealand higher education institution for at least one semester. 

  • High school students from Germany who wish to study at a New Zealand high school for at least two school terms (20 weeks). 

  • High school students from Italy who wish to study at a New Zealand high school for at least two school terms (20 weeks). 

  ENZ’s Market Development Manager Europe Adina Stoye said that ENZ was delighted to be able to offer these scholarships to help raise awareness of New Zealand as a study destination.  

  “Germany, Italy and France are all countries that ENZ is focused on growing in Europe. Through this campaign, potential students can learn that New Zealand is a high-quality study destination for both the quality of our education and the experience international students have when they come here,” said Adina.  

  “We are also delighted to partner with Air New Zealand to include return flights alongside the scholarship award. Scholarship winners will get a taste of New Zealand’s wonderful hospitality before they even land.,” Adina added.
