• Strong start for Cohort 4 international students

  Already more than 3,500 international students have been nominated by their education providers and confirmed by education agencies.  More than 1,900 of these students have had their Request for Travel approved and have been invited by Immigration New Zealand to apply for their student visas, since the process opened on 13 April 2022. 

  Places remain available for students with a number of ELS and PTE providers. Only education providers can nominate students for this cohort. Interested international students or their agents should contact ELS or PTEs as soon as possible. Of the 5,000 places in this cohort, 1,000 were allocated to ELS and 850 to PTEs, with the remainder going to universities, Te Pūkenga, and secondary schools.  

  Once they have been nominated by an education provider and confirmed by education agencies, students have two weeks to make their Request for Travel through the Immigration New Zealand website. Following approval of the Request for Travel, students then have one month to complete and submit a student visa application to Immigration New Zealand, in time for a mid-year start for their studies.  

  Education providers are due to complete their nominations by 6 May 2022.  Any unused places will be transferred to other providers, which means that some providers may get additional places as part of the reallocation process. 

  This is the fourth cohort of international students to be granted a border exception to enter New Zealand and is part of the progressive reopening of our borders. All visa categories are due to reopen from October 2022 onwards, including visitor and student visas.

• SIEBA launches Schools Global Citizenship Pilot Programme

  A network of 20 schools will take part, receiving professional advice and support to create, introduce and embed global citizenship strategies and initiatives across their schools.  

  SIEBA’s recent report on international business recovery for schools highlighted global citizenship education as one of three key areas expected to underpin business recovery and the future of international education, both within New Zealand and globally. The other two areas are sustainability/climate action, and growth in school-to-university pathways. 

  Global citizenship programmes contribute to a better international student experience, build understanding and support for international education, and enrich the value proposition that schools offer both domestic and international students.

  “Global citizenship education (GCED) has the potential to bring local and international students together through a focus on global issues, and in development of global competencies. International students and parents are increasingly looking for schools that can demonstrably deliver GCED within the educational experience," the report says.

  The pilot programme will be delivered in collaboration with the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence. The schools involved will draft Global Citizenship strategies linked to a range of programmes throughout the school, including learning content and teaching approaches, co-curricular programmes, professional learning and development, and student-led initiatives. They will examine how Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori will underpin their global citizenship strategies. Schools will start local, this will be a multi-year journey, and the result will look different in every school.  

  Developing global citizens is also one of the overarching goals of the New Zealand International Education Strategy.

• ENZ to launch major global brand campaign, I AM NEW

  As we re-enter a competitive global environment, the brand campaign will look to articulate the high quality of New Zealand’s education experience in a deliberately unique, ownable and attention-grabbing way.  

  This major campaign will initially run for 12 weeks, complemented by in-market activations, events, and local PR. It will feature eight students from all over the world, spanning across our education sector and regions.  

  Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao invited our eight students to work alongside world-famous Māori fashion designer Kiri Nathan to collaborate on designing a new type of education garment that embodies the cultural values that make a New Zealand education unique: manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, and the pōtiki spirit of youthful energy and finding a better way. Through the narratives we tell focussed on the students’ experiences and goals, we’ll explore themes such as work and career readiness, sustainability, and innovation through collaboration. 

  Campaign assets will be available on The Brand Lab, with reporting data to be shared regularly. We look forward to reopening New Zealand education to the world in an inspiring way that only New Zealand could deliver.

• New Zealand Global Competence Certificate Named Finalist for Two PIEoneer Awards

  The PIEoneer Awards recognise innovation and achievement in global education each year. The New Zealand Global Competence Certificate is a finalist in two categories:  

  • Public / private partnership of the year 
  • Progressive education delivery award.

  A model for delivering global competence education virtually and at scale 

  ENZ, AFS, and Massey University joined forces to deliver global competence education virtually, at a time when students were unable to travel and schools were unable to host international visitors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

  The Global Competence Certificate was ideal in this situation, as it develops self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, cross-cultural communication and flexibility—global skills essential to live, work, and make a real impact around the world. 

  ENZ provided full scholarships to increase access; AFS developed a customised version of their Global Competence Certificate and trained a cadre of qualified facilitators in New Zealand; and Massey educators delivered the New Zealand programme so participants got a taste of the New Zealand teaching style. 

  1,000 learners in 13 countries reached  

  Mixed classes with learners from different countries, provided a rich cultural experience and a chance to connect with peers offshore in a virtual exchange, despite travel restrictions. 

  The nearly 1,000 students and teachers in New Zealand and 13 other countries developed global competence skills they described as “life-changing” and “the best thing in the pandemic.” Ninety-eight percent of the programme attendees said they were ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with the Global Competence Certificate, and 95 percent rated their experience as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good.’ 

  Thanks to the overwhelming success of this programme, the partnership will continue as borders reopen and international travel is back on the agenda, with more than 400 learners benefitting from the New Zealand Global Competence Certificate in 2022. 

  Supporting a nationwide international education strategy  

  This collaborative project directly supports the Government’s International Education Strategy and helps students and teachers develop their cross-cultural skills together with their global peers. 

  “As well as helping to develop the global citizens of tomorrow, this programme demonstrates the reciprocal benefits of international education, giving our rangatahi a chance to learn with high school students from around the world, and giving their offshore peers a chance to learn ‘with’ New Zealand and our unique way of thinking,” says Grant McPherson, ENZ Chief Executive. 

  “Interacting and communicating effectively with people around the world is an important skill. Massey University’s significant experience teaching online, utilising the excellent customised content from AFS and the ongoing support of ENZ, provides a great opportunity for students to gain the knowledge and capabilities they need to live, work and learn in a connected world,” says Tere McGonagle-Daly, Students and Global Engagement, Massey University. 

  The award-winning Global Competence Certificate, developed by AFS Intercultural Programs, is used far beyond New Zealand. As of 2022, it’s used in more than 60 countries with 15,000 learners of different ages and backgrounds.   

  “Educating more young people to become global citizens is mission-critical for our world. At AFS we are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to intercultural learning and can gain skills such as cross-cultural communication, empathy, and conflict resolution to effectively bridge differences,” concludes Daniel Obst, President and CEO of AFS Intercultural Programs.

• Palmerston North’s education connections with Viet Nam

  The MoA signing is the latest development in the education relationship between Palmerston North and Ho Chi Minh City – an earlier agreement signed in 2014 had expired in 2019. Unlike the 2014 agreement, which only included a few education providers in Palmerston North, the renewed MoA captures a much broader range of institutions, from schools to tertiary providers.  

  Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao had helped to sustain this relationship in 2020, through the NZ Global Competence Certificate initiative. The Central Economic Development Agency and the Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) teamed up with ENZ to offer scholarships for 50 secondary school students in Manawatū and Ho Chi Minh City to increase their global competency – read more here. 

  The new MoA was signed by Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith on behalf of PNCC and Deputy Director from Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Education and Training, Duong Tri Dung. It was witnessed by Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Van Trung, New Zealand Ambassador Tredene Dobson, and representatives of ENZ. 

  “Education arrangements like this help to further strengthen these ties. Building on sustained and increasing interest from New Zealand education providers to engage with institutional counterparts in Ho Chi Minh City, this will open a new chapter for collaboration and success for the respective cities,” Ms Dobson said.  

  

• First research projects funded through NZ Centre at IIT Delhi

  Ten projects will each receive seed funding of USD10,000 for one year, half funded by IIT Delhi and half by the New Zealand university involved. 

  The New Zealand Centre at IIT Delhi was established in February 2020 as a focal point for joint academic activity between New Zealand's eight universities and IIT Delhi.  

  The purpose of the Centre is to promote relationships of understanding and co-operation across diverse fields of academic and other sector engagement between New Zealand and India. One of the Centre’s key objectives is to promote joint research projects among IIT Delhi and New Zealand universities in thematic areas of research important for both countries.  

  Below is the list of funded projects: 

  • Design of an electron cyclotron resonance based magnetically steered plasma thruster – IIT Delhi and University of Auckland  
  • Utilisation of Ammonia in a Spark-Ignition engine – IIT Delhi and Victoria University of Wellington    
  • Study on beam-to-column connections of cold formed steel portal frames for low-cost sustainable construction – IIT Delhi and University of Auckland   
  • Andreev reflection in twisted bilayer graphene junctions: effect of magnetic field – IIT Delhi and Victoria University of Wellington    
  • Deciphering the genome wide DNA methylation and transcriptomic signature of hypoxia in meningioma – IIT Delhi and University of Otago

• International education events July – December 2022

  The calendar includes a mixture of ENZ-run events and commercial and global events, designed to facilitate engagement with students, parents, agents and other stakeholders and show that New Zealand is open for business. 

  It’s exciting to be welcoming the sector back to events in partner countries, and to reconnect in person with students, parents and international education partners.  

  “We are really excited to be bringing back a number of events that our industry partners will be familiar with from before the pandemic,” says Ben Burrowes, ENZ’s Regional Director Asia.  

  “We are looking forward to welcoming industry partners back in country and reconnecting with them face-to-face. It's hugely important for us to be back out here, reassuring everyone that New Zealand is ready to start welcoming international students back to our shores.”  

  In April and May this year, ENZ held several engagement sessions with international education providers and ran a survey to inform decisions. We received positive feedback from the sector that they wanted to see events developed that would enable them to promote their offerings directly to students and other stakeholders in key countries, under the New Zealand education brand.  

  While we have seen international border restrictions soften for many countries, some still have various levels of border restrictions in place – ENZ will continue to monitor this as it could affect future events.

• Diversification of International Education sees six innovative projects receive funding

  Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has today announced the recipients of the International Education Product Innovation Fund.

  Just over $1.6 million in funding has been awarded to six organisations, with support ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 for individual projects over the next 12 months.

  The projects that received funding span a wide range of activity. They include a global course for rugby coaches developed in partnership with The Crusaders, an online indigenous eCommerce programme, English language learning based on original, high quality drama content, global enterprise coaching and peer group learning, an evolution of an NZ financial literacy platform for global audiences, and virtual reality online medical training focused on childbirth simulation.

  Initial response to the Product Innovation Fund saw more than 150 organisations express interest. ENZ designed a rigorous process for submitting and assessing applications, working alongside Creative HQ – a specialist innovation agency. The process involved a clear set of criteria that were communicated to all applicants. A shortlist was prepared, and a final assessment was completed by an independent expert panel comprising external innovation and education experts and senior ENZ staff.

  Commenting on the recipients, ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the innovation and scope of the applications had been eye-opening.

  “The quality of the entrants was a clear indication of New Zealand ingenuity, market knowledge and cutting-edge innovation,” said Mr McPherson.

  “The sheer variety of fields and technology being utilised shows how advanced the thinking and capability of New Zealand education providers has become. The potential of each of these projects can now be fully explored, and I am confident the lessons learned can be shared for the benefit of our whole education sector, inspiring others to follow their lead.”

  The Product Innovation Fund was launched by ENZ in April to encourage providers to design and develop new education products and services for international learners. It is part of the broader refreshed international education strategy and is intended to fund programmes that deliver new, meaningful, and unique learning experiences from New Zealand with education products and services that set New Zealand apart from other countries.

  Providers will create new products and services aimed at transforming the way international learning is developed, promoted, and delivered. Funding and support from ENZ will help providers fast-track the exploration and development of new ideas, conduct market research, build prototypes, and advance their global market strategy. Lessons learnt from the programme will assist in developing future education products and services for the benefit of the entire international education sector.
