  • Korean students: “I want to study in New Zealand”

    Launched in October, the competition aims to mobilise Korean agents to promote New Zealand education and attract students to enrol with New Zealand providers (participating students must use the service of an agent). 

    The promotion of the competition attracted a record number of Korean agents to the ENZ agent seminar in Seoul and the ENZ team received very positive feedback about the initiative. While the winning students stand to gain a significant contribution towards their costs of studying in New Zealand, the highest performing agents will also be rewarded with a familiarisation trip to New Zealand (or flights between Korea and New Zealand).

    The entry for the short video is open until 31 January 2017. ENZ’s Regional Lead, North Asia, Cecily Lin said this is an excellent opportunity for New Zealand providers.

    “The competition is an invaluable opportunity to promote your school or institution and your region – you can maximise this by directly supporting your agents with information and resources,” said Cecily.

    All video entries from the competition are publically accessible and will promote the Korea photo edit2student’s sector and/or provider of choice until the competition closes. ENZ will also profile quality entries and the winning Korean students through our social media channels in January and beyond the competition.  

    Recently joining the ENZ team is Dahee Sohn, a talented Korean international student skilled in social media, who will be working to boost our ENZ Naver blog and Facebook posts. We’ll be active in these platforms so please follow our posts and make sure you direct your agents to them too.

    ENZ has also provided resources to agents to promote New Zealand – including an open poster artwork they can adapt to include their branding to reach out to potential students.

  • Koreans land safely into New Zealand schools

    They are in New Zealand for an eight-week programme that includes English language provision. The programme is a direct result of the Free Trade Agreement signed in December 2015 between New Zealand and South Korea.

    Peter Bull, ENZ General Manager International, said the Korean students are the children of farming or fishing families, and are all high performing students.

    “The opportunity to study in New Zealand and to represent their family, school and Korea in this inaugural year of the scholarship scheme saw students go through a selection criteria that whittled down over 2,000 applications to the 150 selected.”

    ENZ partnered closely with the Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) to implement the scholarship scheme in New Zealand through its member schools, and to help manage the logistics involved in coordinating such a large group of students at once.

    Peter paid tribute to SIEBA for also delivering orientations in the three regions to ensure that the transition into New Zealand life was as seamless as possible for the Korean visitors.

    A highlight of the orientation programme occurred at Canterbury’s Pudding Hill Lodge, near Methven. The students were welcomed with a waiata from some talented Mount Hutt College students. This was followed by a very warm welcome from Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce that was then reciprocated by the Korean students.

    The other welcome ceremonies were held at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton, which was attended by the Korean Ambassador, and President of EPIS, the Korean agency responsible for the implementation of the programme, and at Garin College in Nelson.

    As agreed under the KNZFTA, 450 students will be granted scholarships to study in New Zealand over three years.

    Fieldwork for the 2026 International Student Experience Survey (ISES) is now underway, having launched on Monday 20 April. International students across all New Zealand education subsectors are being invited to share their views on key aspects of the student journey – from choosing where to study and preparing for arrival, through to orientation, education quality, living experiences, connections, work opportunities and value for money.

    Last year, more than 5,000 international students shared their experiences of studying in New Zealand.

    Key highlights included:
    •    87% rated their overall experience positively, with 43% rating it ‘excellent’ 
    •    92% rated their experience of people and connections positively

    These results reflect the strength of New Zealand’s international education offering and the collective effort across the sector to enhance the international student experience. 

    The ISES plays a vital role in building a robust, sector-wide picture of the international student experience.

    We would like to sincerely thank the international education sector peak bodies and education providers who are supporting the survey and helping to maximise student participation.

    Survey fieldwork will run until late May, and we look forward to sharing the insights from this year’s survey with the sector later in 2026.
