  • ENZ leads NZ university delegation to the Middle East

    From 29 April to 8 May, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) led an education delegation, involving four New Zealand universities, to Oman, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. 

    Across the region, the delegation visit focused on engaging with government agencies to promote New Zealand as a study destination for scholarship students, as well as meeting with agents and presenting to self-funded students looking for opportunities to study abroad. In Dubai, New Zealand universities visited international schools that offer strong student recruitment opportunities with expatriate students. 

    In Oman, the focus was on promoting the New Zealand education offering at the Global Higher Education Exhibition (GHEDEX) in Muscat. ENZ’s pavilion with the University of Otago, the University of Waikato, the University of Auckland, and Massey University attracted strong interest from well-qualified students and their parents, and government and institution representatives.  

    In Riyadh, the delegation visited Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) with representatives from the University of Waikato and Massey University to explore institution partnerships. PNU is a women’s university with 50,000 students (57 percent studying STEM subjects) and its own metro system. The university is interested in broad cooperation agreements covering study abroad, joint programmes, exchange, and PhD, particularly in the areas of renewable energy, computer science, digital media, and sports.

    Saudia Arabia has a new Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques scholarship programme that aims to send 70,000 students to top-ranked universities by 2030. In the UAE, ENZ met with the Scholarships Office of the Presidential Court in Abu Dhabi to discuss New Zealand as a destination for this prestigious programme. Approval of New Zealand universities by government agencies in Saudia Arabia and the UAE would have a positive impact on New Zealand’s engagement with other government ministries and funding bodies in both these countries as well.  

    ENZ’s Regional Director Americas, Middle East & Europe, Amy Rutherford, said this delegation visit was a valuable opportunity to engage with senior education officials in Riyadh on this new scholarship programme as well as exploring institution-to-institution partnerships. 

    “We have emphasised to Saudi officials New Zealand universities’ areas of expertise that align with the subjects set out under the programme. However, getting New Zealand onto the Saudi Arabian government’s list for scholarships will take regular and persistent engagement from NZ Inc partners and education institutions,” Amy said.  

    “The approval of New Zealand education providers [on the list] would be an important signal of the high quality of New Zealand education and potentially support our involvement in other areas of government funding, such with the National Institute for Education and Professional Development, the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC), or the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism.” 

    ENZ’s Senior Advisor, Middle East and Europe, Bronwyn Shanks, said the delegation visit was a good opportunity to grow vocational education links and reengage with New Zealand alumni in the region. 

    “As Saudi Arabia works to diversify its economy and upskill its population in line with Vision 2030, there are clear opportunities for Te Pūkenga. There is a cooperation agreement on the table with TVTC, and the new Wa’ed scholarships pathway is focused on vocational education and training. 

    “We engaged with many New Zealand alumni who were very positive about their experiences in New Zealand and the opportunities a New Zealand education has created for them. The real excitement recently has been around Rayannah Barnawi, the first Arab woman to go into space, who is a University of Otago graduate,” Bronwyn said.

  • New Zealand education in focus during Prime Minister’s trip to China

    Education elements featured strongly in the Prime Minister’s Trade Delegation to China helping raise the visibility of New Zealand as an education destination for Chinese students.

    To launch the trip, the delegation joined the Prime Minister at a Showcasing New Zealand event held at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing to promote New Zealand as a travel and study destination. ENZ invited key media, influencers, and Chinese and New Zealand students to interact with the Prime Minister. This sparked significant local news coverage, amongst leading Chinese state media, setting the tone for the visit and highlighting the significance of international student exchanges between New Zealand and China. New Chinese media outlets also were seen covering New Zealand education as a topic for the first time.

    Peking University is host to the New Zealand Centre. Established in 2007 as a collaborative project between Peking University and the University of Auckland, the New Zealand Centre at Peking University has grown to represent all eight of New Zealand’s universities and enable high-level engagement across a range of departments and faculties. During the visit to the University on 28 June, the Prime Minister, with Hao Ping, Chair of Peking University Council and Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University, the Ambassadors of New Zealand and China, and representatives of the New Zealand Centre launched the Rewi Alley Professorship.

    There were also other several significant developments in our bilateral education links with China that were achieved while there. These included:

    • Signing of the Arrangement on Mutual Recognition of Academic Qualifications in Higher Education between the Ministries of Education witnessed by Prime Minister Rt Hon Chris Hipkins and Premier Li.

    • Signing of a Strategic Partnership between Education New Zealand and Air New Zealand to support international education mobility and joint promotion in China. To read more, please visit the article on ENZ Collaboration with NZ Inc Agencies in China.

    • The education delegation meeting with the Vice-Minister of Education Chen Jie (responsible for international cooperation) and China Ministry of Education officials. The meeting underscored the importance of a strong government-to-government relationship and provided a chance to showcase the education sectors present within the New Zealand delegation and discuss areas of existing and potential cooperation.

    • A Sustainability Roundtable with a focus on education involving the education sector delegation and Chinese education partners.

    It was a busy, challenging, insightful and ultimately very rewarding week. The education delegates also shared their own feedback. John van der Zwan, Executive Director Schools International Education Business Association reflected that the mission to China was hugely valuable and a chance to get high level insights into working with Chinese officials and agents following the pandemic.

    “The mission was also a special opportunity to engage with the Prime Minister and other government officials on the role and importance of international education for our school sector,” he said.

    Executive Director of English New Zealand, Kim Renner, noticed the shift in how New Zealand is profiled in China compared to many years ago and echoed the response from other delegates that the visit was valuable for the representatives of the education sectors. 

    “China is a development market for most of our members, so it was a great opportunity for English language to be part of this important delegation, particularly the meetings with the Vice Minister of Education and JJL Overseas Education Agency.”

    “While seeing the country is a key part of study travel, we know that inbound students also want an immersive experience focused on people, cultural exchange and making connections. This was certainly showcased during the visit and was received very positively by all those we engaged with”,  added.

    ENZ would like to offer its sincere thanks and congratulation to everyone who was involved in the preparation and planning for the visit and gives special recognition to the education sector representatives on the Prime Minister Trade Delegation.  

  • Tribute to a longtime friend of New Zealand

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) would like to share a tribute to the memory of KC Yong, Chairman of SELSET Education, Malaysia, particularly to his tremendous contribution over a lifetime to growing the education relationship between New Zealand and Malaysia. 

    KC – as he was fondly known – first connected with New Zealand as an international student studying engineering at the University of Auckland. His experience studying and living in the country left him with a deep, lifelong appreciation for New Zealand education.  

    It was likely this close connection to New Zealand that led KC to set up SELSET Education, a pioneer New Zealand specialist education consultancy in 2002. Over the past 21 years, KC’s efforts have seen SELSET grow to become the largest Malaysia-based education agency recruiting international students for New Zealand.  

    ENZ’s Regional Director – Asia, Ben Burrowes, said it was a real privilege to have known and worked with KC, who was so passionate about New Zealand education.  

    “KC and his son Rick – as well as their extended family who work for SELSET – have held close working relationships with our international education sector for decades. KC’s passing is a huge loss. I would like to personally acknowledge his immense contribution to the education relationship between New Zealand and Malaysia over the last few decades.”  

    ENZ’s Acting Market Manager – Malaysia and Indonesia, Naluri Bella, also recalls her association with KC Yong and SELSET Education.  

    “KC was a pioneer in the international education space for Malaysia and will certainly be missed. His legacy lives on in his family and team at SELSET Education.”  

  • Market Insights Sessions held for PTEs and ELS in Auckland last month

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) invited representatives from some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Private Training Establishments (PTEs) and English Language Schools (ELSs) to come and hear from our in-market colleagues who were in Aotearoa New Zealand in August.  

    Felix Ye, Senior Market Development Manager for Guangzhou held an insights session on the China market for PTEs and ELSs, Jugnu Roy, Director of Engagement East Asia and India held a session for PTEs on the India market and Javiera Visedo, Director of Engagement Latin America held a session for PTEs and ELSs on the Latin American market, specifically Chile, Colombia and Brazil.  

    The insights shared included key facts, policies, trends and observations about the individual markets, marketing channels and advice for student-recruiting activities, as well as opportunities and challenges for the sector.  

    Brijesh Sethi, Founder and Chairman of New Zealand Skills and Education Group and Co-Chairperson of Quality Tertiary Institutes said the sessions offered good insight into how ENZ can assist PTEs in marketing and opening up new markets. 

    “This is especially important in this tough environment for many vocational sub degree providers. The sessions were also a great opportunity to meet and hear from ENZ colleagues from these markets in person,” added Brijesh. 

    ENZ’s General Manager, Sector Engagement, Wendy Kerr, said that it was great to have a good turnout as these sessions are one of the ways we can engage directly and support our customers with useful information about the various markets they are targeting.  

    “We hope that our customers find our targeted insights useful in their own decision-making processes. With the opportunity also for open discussion throughout these sessions, they certainly are an important tool for us too in gaining a better understanding of the needs of the various PTEs and ELSs, meaning we can be more targeted in our approach to supporting them in the future.

    Asia  

    The government of Hong Kong has announced ambitions to become an international hub for post-secondary education with measures including an increased quota for international undergraduates at public universities, more scholarships and work rights for postgraduate students. 

     

    North America  

    Canada is set to introduce a “recognised institution” framework, through which colleges and universities with a positive record of vetting and supporting international students may be eligible for fast-track study permits. This comes after over 100 Indian students faced potential deportation earlier this year after their admission letters to Canadian colleges were found to be fake, which the students were unaware of.  

     

    Middle East 

    A British school in Abu Dhabi that has been rated outstanding by the emirate's school regulator for promoting the UAE's national identity said it has weaved elements of the country's culture, history, heritage and, Arabic language into its UK curriculum. The British International School Abu Dhabi is home to 2,080 pupils from 96 countries, with one in five pupils at the school being Emirati. 

     

    Europe 

    According to the Irish Higher Education Authority (HEA), In 2022/23, Ireland set a new all-time high for the number of international students studying at Irish universities. 33,480 students were enrolled at Irish universities last year, an increase of nearly 12% compared to 2021/22, according to the report. Furthermore, India’s student population in Ireland has grown by a significant 17.8%, reflecting a surging trend. 

    Africa 

    South African business schools are a higher education success story and champions in terms of higher education on the African continent. Though competing for students, they display a strong ethos of collaboration, generated by a sense of shared purpose to upskill a “new” country. These schools show the power of collaboration, common purpose, and internationalisation outlook.  

  • From the CE: An amazing adventure

    With less than 50 days left in 2023, many of you will be preparing to wrap up this current year. For many it means farewelling some of their international students who have completed their study experiences. For others it is a moment of reflection on how far new learners have come since arriving on our shores at the start of the year. For everyone, while looking forward to a summer of well-deserved rest and relaxation, preparations for the beginning of the new year will also be well underway 

    Looking across the whole sector I cannot stress enough how important these preparations are in maintaining the momentum of the past 12 months. With, I’m told, close to 60,000 international student enrolments (up from the low of 40,000 students in 2022), we have collectively made significant progress in a very short time. However, now is not the time to rest on our laurels. As we finish this year, the effort that is made now will certainly lead to further success in 2024.  

    Here at ENZ, alongside our sector partners, we have been very active in market putting New Zealand in front of agents, parents, and prospective students across the globe. Fairs in Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Viet Nam spring to mind. The new brand campaign is in the market. It is a positive, upbeat, high-energy picture of what you get from a New Zealand education. It builds on the awareness created by I AM NEW while focusing on what makes us different. As international education campaigns go, it is very different, and that is a good thing. 

    Alongside this work, we are busy preparing for the announcement of the new Minister. This has involved the preparation of briefing papers that will be shared with the new Minister once they take up their office While we are awaiting instructions which will come in the form of the Minister’s Letter of Expectation and the introductions that will take place in due course, we do know that international education will be a focus of the new government. This is especially in the areas of international connectivity and economic development.  

    Change and opportunity are ever-present for everyone living and working in international education, it is something we all understand and embrace. 

    Many of you will be aware that this is my last week at ENZ following my decision to leave after almost 12 years steering this waka. I have been with ENZ since its inception and have seen many major achievements and milestones. While getting stuff done is always important, for me the pleasure and the reward has been the many talented and passionate people I have met and worked with. The collective desire to transform the lives of learners, our communities and at the end of the day Aotearoa New Zealand, sees them doing incredible things day in and day out. This is what saw our industry through the most challenging times our sector has faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. This strength and bravery will see our industry continue to rebuild and thrive; of that I have no doubt.  

    It has been an amazing adventure championing a New Zealand education. Thank you.

  • Smart waste management idea sees students take out top spot in KIWI Challenge Indonesia finals

    The theme was “Reforming Indonesia’s mobility and smart cities using AI technology”. This year’s initiative hosted 59 teams from across 37 schools for a total of 269 student participants, the highest ever at the KIWI Challenge 

    The groups were required to submit video entries to a judging panel made up of AUT academics and ENZ representatives, who reviewed the submissions and selected finalists. Participants received mentoring from a New Zealand university academic through the process and took part in workshops to refine their business plans. They were given a taste of New Zealand’s learning environment along the way and built an understanding of our tertiary education offering for future planning. 

    The participating academic was Dr Taghreed Hikmet from AUT, a Senior Lecturer in International Business, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship who has expertise in smart cities and is passionate about mentoring and inspiring young future leaders. 

    The finals were held on Saturday 25th November, where six shortlisted teams from across Indonesia presented their ideas to a panel of judges made up of Dr Hikmet (AUT), Ben Burrowes (ENZ’s Regional Director, Asia), and Indonesia Embassy staff (representing Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade), Hira Trisnoputri 

    UniSadhuGuna International College took first place with their ‘Greenlight’ business idea, a smart waste management enterprise which aims to create a sustainable waste management system that actively involves households, businesses, and the government. UniSadhuGuna International College received a voucher worth 10,000,000 Indonesian Rupiah for winning the competition.  

    Winners! The team from UniSadhuGuna international College took out first place with their ‘Greenlight’ business idea.

    Dr Hikmet reflected on the KIWI Challenge warmly. It has been truly rewarding, observing the outstanding progress and growth in the finalists' projects, presentations, and overall confidence.  

    "It was a privilege to engage with high school students across Indonesia, contributing to the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit fostered by the competition. Excitement brews within me for the potential of future collaborations and initiatives,” Dr Hikmet concluded.  

    Following the finals, Ben Burrowes and Dr Taghreed Hikmet participated in an Instagram Live session with KOMPAS TV, the leading media network in Indonesia. This Instagram Live generated a total of 3.4k views and the highest number of people watching online was 348. You can watch the Instagram Live here: Part 1 and Part 2.  

  • Summer in Aotearoa New Zealand – Explore, have fun and stay safe!

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is supporting students to explore New Zealand this summer with an emphasis on staying safe during their holiday break 

    NauMai NZ has dedicated pages on outdoor safety,  water safety, road safety and the New Zealand climate, supporting students to prepare for their activities over the summer. NauMai NZ also has information on the cities and regions of New Zealand, along with recommendations of things to do and see and how to get there. 

    ENZ reminds students to keep themselves safe from scams. If students have lost money in a scam or have been the victim of an online scam where threats have been made against them, they can contact the NZ Police who are here to help. Phone 105 or report online. 

    Summer is a great opportunity to take a break from study and find time to relax and explore our beautiful country. There is plenty to see and do in New Zealand but students can also take steps to stay safe, wherever they are and whatever they are doing. NauMai NZ is here to help them.
