    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is inviting New Zealand education providers to take part in an initiative to encourage students from Thailand who have previously studied here to return to New Zealand for further study. Providers are invited to subsidise travel for returning students - up to a maximum of NZD $3,000 for students returning for a year or more.  

    The scheme will work by students or agents providing proof of previous study and once the students are in New Zealand, can rebate the air fare back to their account through coordination with their agents. The amount students can rebate is based on the receipt of their booked travel but no more than the $3,000 cap. New Zealand schools who were involved in the recent education events in Thailand gave positive feedback on this concept. 

    ENZ will publicise the initiative online, via agents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and media. Education agents will also be asked to co-promote this with us while KTC credit card, the scheme’s credit card partner, will be promoting this campaign and additional benefits through their own database and PR channels.

  • International students welcomed across New Zealand

    In February, hundreds of international students gathered at a University of Auckland orientation event. ENZ’s Student Experience Manager, Ross Crosson, says, “The wait, for many, has been long but there was a very positive vibe in the air.”

     

    In Hamilton, the Wintec | Te Pūkenga International student services team held an interactive event to welcome students on campus. They used a range of activities to create connections amongst the students and to familiarise them with student support services available.

     

    Over in Wellington, Victoria University of Wellington Vice Chancellor Nic Smith took the opportunity to connect with students face-to-face as they were settling into halls of residence.

     

    More than 150 international students from 11 local secondary schools were welcomed into Dunedin at Puketeraki Marae on 8 March. In the event organised by Enterprise Dunedin and Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, the guests spent the morning at the pōwhiri, which was accompanied by pupils from Waitati School kapa haka group, and then enjoyed a kōrero and some kai.

  • Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao welcomes new Board Chair

    The Minister of Education, Jan Tinetti, confirmed two new appointments to the Board of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao on 17 March. 

    Tracey Bridges has been appointed Chair for a three-year term from 1 April 2023. She succeeds Steve Maharey who will finish his term at the end of this month.

    In addition, two existing Board members have been reappointed. Dr Linda Sissons for a third term until 15 March 2024 and Daniel Wilson to a three-year term. 

    Tracey Bridges has knowledge of regional economic development, and expertise in strategy, risk, and reputation management, and in social marketing. She is Chair of the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency Limited (WellingtonNZ), co-founder of The Good Registry and sets on the Boards of Sky Stadium, Whānau Āwhina Plunket, the Wellfed NZ Trust and the Digital Media Trust. 

    Dr Dona (Therese) Arseneau has been appointed as a member for a three-year term from 1 April 2023. Dr Arseneau also has knowledge of economic development including international education’s contribution to regional economic development, and governance experience in the tertiary sector at the Ara Institute and the Open Polytechnic. She previously chaired Regenerate Christchurch and Enterprise North Canterbury.

  • Support for Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America recipients to continue to June 2026 

    The Prime Minister’s Scholarships programme was discontinued, and its funding reprioritised in the latest Government Budget 2025.   

    The decision to discontinue the programme is in line with the Government’s priority to deliver effective and fiscally sustainable public services and the need to focus on core activities in the current constrained fiscal environment.   

    The change takes effect from 1 July 2025. The decision will not impact any of the scholarships’ current recipients or recipients of the final group round, who were confirmed in June.   

    ENZ will continue to support current recipients, including those who are yet to travel overseas to 30 June 2026.   

    Since their inception in 2013 and 2016, respectively, the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America have been among ENZ’s significant, transformative and impactful programmes of work. To date, the programme has awarded 3,991 scholarships that have helped New Zealanders not only deepen their understanding of different cultures and languages but also enrich appreciation for their own culture and place in the world.   

    ENZ’s Group General Manager, International Marketing, Brand and Scholarships, Anna Gestro, said the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America have had a truly positive impact for building New Zealand’s connections in two key global regions.   

    “To date, the programme has awarded 3,991 scholarships that have helped New Zealanders deepen their understanding of new cultures and languages and enriched appreciation for their own culture and place in the world.   

    “The programme leaves a rich legacy through its rich and diverse alumni, who will continue to be global citizens in the way they nourish the connections and learnings picked up from their life-changing experiences from the scholarships,” Anna said.
