NZQA brochures now in Spanish and Japanese
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has developed a suite of language translations to promote NCEA study in New Zealand. Alongside the English language version, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai and German translations are available. The translations feature NCEA student success stories and the future study plans of these students.

Leadership team changes at ENZ
Regional Directors join ENZ’s Executive Team

ENZ’s three Regional Directors – Alex Grace for China and North Asia; John Laxon for South and South East Asia and Middle East; and Lisa Futschek for Europe and Americas – have been appointed to ENZ’s Executive Team. This will ensure that international market conditions and issues have greater visibility in our discussions and decisions.
Incoming Regional Director, China and North Asia
Adele Bryant is preparing to take over the role of Regional Director, China and North Asia from Alex Grace who leaves ENZ in June. Adele brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role including her significant achievements with the universities sector, and her international experience with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade before joining ENZ. Amongst her MFAT roles directly relevant to the ENZ Regional Director role, Adele worked as Head of the China Unit, was Consul General in Hong Kong and was Deputy Director APEC. Adele will move to Beijing shortly.New GM Strategy and Insight
Clive Jones is our new GM Strategy and Insight. This is a new role with an important mission to lead and coordinate ENZ’s strategic thinking, priority projects and major initiatives. He’ll be focusing on some key initiatives that have the potential to make a big difference for the future of international education. Greg Scott has been promoted to replace Clive as GM Industry Development. Greg was previously ENZ’s South Island Business Development Manager and led our Regional Partnership Programme. In his new role, Greg will lead ENZ’s team of business development and project managers, based in our four New Zealand offices, who are tasked with supporting international education providers to achieve sustainable industry growth across New Zealand.Student Marketing expands focus
As part of ENZ’s recently expanded focus on the entire ‘student journey’ – from ‘prospective student’ to ‘student experience’ to ‘alumni and advocate’, we have refocused our Student Marketing team around five areas: student acquisition; events and agents; student engagement; student experience; and student scholarships.

New Director, Student Experience
Hayley Shields has joined ENZ as Director of Student Experience. Hayley recently led international marketing and business development for the University of Auckland. She has had an extensive career in international education in Australia and New Zealand, including with University of New South Wales, University of Melbourne and CPA Australia. Based in Auckland, she will work with industry stakeholders, government and community agencies and students to deliver a shared vision of a unique and quality student experience for all international students. This work will be informed by the International Student Wellbeing Strategy, the development of which has been led by the Ministry of Education. -
World-class fusion cuisine and culinary skills at Viet Nam gala dinner
The three teams, each consisting of two Vietnamese and two New Zealand students, showcased their culinary skills on stage in front of 170 guests, including New Zealand Minister of Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Steven Joyce.
The event was the outcome of two months’ hard work for the three teams, who initially worked together online to develop their menus under the guidance of culinary mentor and 2013 MasterChef New Zealand finalist, Vanessa Baxter. The teams met face-to-face in Ho Chi Minh City on 3 June, and then spent the following three days visiting Vietnamese markets to collect their fresh local produce before finalising their menus at the Caravalle Hotel kitchen.
At the gala dinner, the guests were treated to a selection of dishes from the students’ three-course fusion menus. Meanwhile, the three official judges – Haike Manning, New Zealand Ambassador to Viet Nam; Le Xuan Tam, Executive Chef, Caravelle Hotel and Brendon Partridge, Executive Chef, JW Marriott Hanoi – sampled all of the student’s dishes throughout the evening.
Decision making was tough and competition was high. Team 1 narrowly missed coming first, and Team 2 won the guest vote.
Minister Joyce announced Team 3 as the overall winner. Their braised lamb shanks with pickled cabbage, potato rosti and reduced jus proved most popular. This team included Jamin Gibson (Auckland University of Technology), Emma Waser (Otago Polytechnic), Phan Văn Lâm (Viet Giao Tourism School), and Nguyễn Ngọc Quân (VATEL International Business School Hotel & Tourism Management).

“It is so amazing that we won the competition,” said Emma Waser. “We gelled so well as a team throughout the whole competition but we worked especially well together on the night.
“We had to delve into each other’s cultures and traditions to come up with our fusion menu. I have learned how important it is to mix it up – to use different flavours and borrow from other traditions and cuisines.
“It has been amazing to come to Viet Nam and see what else is out there in the world – to find out more about different cultures, different people and different food.”
Said Jamin: “I have really enjoyed the food, the friendliness of the people and their hospitality. I definitely want to return to Viet Nam with my wife.”
Nguyễn Ngọc Quân enjoyed learning how to cook lamb the Kiwi way. “I learned to cook lamb the way that is more traditional in New Zealand. Typically the Vietnamese dislike the smell of lamb but our slow cook method and flavours in the lamb shank proved really popular.
“I admired my New Zealand team mates’ techniques and knowledge as well as their ability to think innovatively and creatively,” he said.
The gala dinner was the result of the New Zealand – Viet Nam Culinary Collaboration, an initiative that came out of the New Zealand – Viet Nam Strategic Plan on Education signed in November 2015. The plan is designed to deepen the level of engagement between the two countries and enrich students’ learning.
“The New Zealand – Viet Nam Culinary Collaboration is yet another example of the growing education relationship between our two countries,” said ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson.
“While it has been fantastic to see the outstanding teamwork between the students, the gala dinner was also an opportunity to showcase New Zealand institutions’ vocational expertise and our education system’s world-renowned practical application of skills which prepare students for the working world.”
Grant emphasised that everyone involved in the collaboration was a winner.

Team 1 included Ryan Prouting (Ara, Institute of Canterbury), Tuainekore Taringa (NZMA), Trịnh Xuân Hoàng (Viet Giao Tourism School), and Nguyen Thuy Tra Giang (VATEL International Business School Hotel & Tourism Management).
Team 2 included Ella Ritson-Jones (Southern Institute of Technology), Jamie Bell (Wellington Institute of Technology), Dương Nhật Huy (Viet Giao Tourism School) and Phan Trong Bao Chau (VATEL International Business School Hotel & Tourism Management).

UK NARIC workshop in Christchurch
The National Agency for Recognition and Comparison of International qualifications (NARIC) United Kingdom (UK) is a leading provider of training on international qualifications on behalf of the UK government.
There will be four sessions over the two days:

There is limited capacity for each session. Non-UK NARIC members can secure their spot at UK NARIC’s website.

Student visas & Sri Lanka
Currently these applications are processed in the INZ Bangkok Area Office. From 27 January 2014 the INZ Mumbai Area Office will process all student visa applications lodged in Sri Lanka.
Visa applications will continue to be submitted to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, once applications are processed in India there will no longer be an option to pay by credit card. All visa application fees must be paid in $USD Bank Drafts made out to “Immigration New Zealand”.
The VAC service fee remains unchanged and can be paid in cash, bank draft or bank transfer.
Applications from Sri Lanka lodged before 27 January 2014 will continue to be processed at the INZ Bangkok Area Office and can be paid for by credit card.

Launched tonight at the New Zealand International Education Conference 2013 in Christchurch by the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Steven Joyce, the New Zealand Education Brand Story is a suite of resources you can use to share the distinctive benefits of New Zealand education in an emotionally engaging and inspiring way.
The central messages – all focused around the concept of ‘new’ and being open to the new – are articulated in a captivating two-minute video and associated marketing resources including photographs, logos, branded templates and presentations that you can use when marketing your institution, business, region or the country as a whole.
The idea behind developing these marketing resources is that by first building awareness of New Zealand education internationally – who we are, what we stand for and what we offer as a country – it will pave the way for you to introduce your school, university, business or institution and its distinctive strengths in more detail.
