  • Consultation on ENZRA and ENZ’s agent work

    Clive Jones, General Manager Business Development, ENZ says the 2015 review of ENZRA undertaken by external consultants found significant shortcomings in the ENZRA programme. 

    “Education agents continue to make a significant contribution to the success of international education in New Zealand, and the ENZRA review also recommended ways for ENZ to better support education providers and education agents to be successful.  We have been exploring all recommendations throughout our consultations.”

    As part of our consultation, ENZ now invites organisations active in New Zealand’s education industry to complete a 10-15 minute survey by Thursday 30 June 2016.

    “The survey results will help us identify the products and services we should be offering education agents and education providers to best support the recruitment of quality international students for New Zealand,” says Clive.

    Depending on what ENZ hears through consultations, and the amount of analysis and development needed, it’s likely ENZ will announce the next steps in its work regarding agents later this this year.

  • ENZ Emirates Airline promotion launches in Saudi Arabia

    This promotion builds on a successful #YourSummerinNZ competition, which concluded on 5 June with the award of six prizes to study in New Zealand. The winners receive full scholarships to study English language at one of the six sponsoring New Zealand English language schools for up to six weeks, including return flights to New Zealand and accommodation.

    The Emirates Airline promotional discount offer is on flights to New Zealand, booked from 1 June until 31 August, departing from Riyadh, Jeddah, Medinah, and Dammam. To redeem the offer, students need to use an infographic posted on ENZ’s Arabic Twitter page – @nzeducationsa.

    “We are delighted to partner with Emirates Airline in promoting New Zealand as the premium destination for English-language students,” says John Laxon, ENZ’s Middle East Regional Director.

    “Saudi students can now fly direct from Dubai to New Zealand via Emirates, and enter New Zealand visa-free when studying for up to 12 weeks.”

    The flight promotion, and competition, are targeted to students looking at summer abroad study, given the longer summer holiday period in 2016.

    New Zealand Ambassador, Hamish MacMaster, announced the Saudi #YourSummerinNZ scholarship winners: Abdullah Al Fifi (New Zealand Language Centres), Thamer Albugmi (Worldwide School of English), Ali Al Shahrani (Academic Colleges Group), Mohammed AlQabbaa (Southern Lakes English Language College), Majed Alzahrani (Languages International), and Fahad Alfifi (The Campbell Institute).

    “The #YourSummerinNZ competition was a great success,” says Ambassador MacMaster.

    “More than 3,000 entrants promoted New Zealand on ENZ’s dedicated Arabic-language Twitter channel – @nzeducationsa. ENZ now has more than 38,000 followers on its Twitter page, where students can find out how great it is to study in New Zealand.”

  • Joint India New Zealand Research Grants Awarded

    Last month Minister Steven Joyce announced the seven successful recipients of the inaugural New Zealand Higher Education Research Grants, with seven winning proposals selected from over sixty applications.

    From considering the impacts of climate change on ocean acidification to exploring new chemotherapy treatments, all projects will strengthen academic ties with a country that is New Zealand’s second largest source of international students.

    All research proposals have at least one Principal Investigator based in New Zealand and one in India, and the projects clearly indicate the potential for further collaborative research in the future.

    Full list of joint India New Zealand Higher Education Research Grant awardees: 

    • The University of Waikato collaborating with Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi. Joint research project: India at Leisure: Media, culture, and consumption in the new economy.  

    • The University of Auckland collaborating with Anna University in Chennai. Joint research project: Ploy-ethylenedioxythipphene/nitrogen doped grapheme composites for high performance supercapacitor applications.

    • The University of Auckland collaborating with Madurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu. Joint research project: The impacts of climate change induced ocean acidification process of the physiology and calcifying rate of sea urchins between temperate (New Zealand) and tropical (India) species.

    • The University of Otago collaborating with the University of Delhi. Joint research project: Vitamin D and calcium intakes of young Indian children living in the slums of South Delhi.

    • The University of Auckland collaborating with the University of Calcutta. Joint research project: Organmetallic 2- pyridinecarbothioamide complexes as potential inhibitors of cyclooxygenases in anticancer chemotherapy.

    • University of Canterbury collaborating with the University of Delhi. Joint research project: Health, labour, migration and the formation of Indian diasporas in the South Pacific, 19-20th centuries.

    • Victoria University of Wellington collaborating with Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. Joint research project: Managing India New Zealand institutional challenges for success.

    Caring Clinic is focused on meeting the needs of international students and migrants from Asia, providing services in Cantonese and Mandarin as well as English, and offers innovative services including Skype consultations after hours and e-prescriptions.

    The new clinic has been welcomed by the Auckland Agency Group (AAG), a cross-agency collaboration of central and local government agencies formed to lead communication with international student groups, ethnic communities and providers in Auckland. 

    Hayley Shields, ENZ’s Director of Student Experience and Chair of AAG, said the new clinic reflects the shift to make support services more attuned to students’ cultural needs.

    “More than 60 per cent of international student enrolments are in Auckland, and it’s important for students to be able to access culturally appropriate healthcare services.

    “This is one of the key objectives in the New Zealand International Student Wellbeing Strategy.”

    Dr Jessie Liu and Dr Ruoh Sim, the two principal doctors at Caring Clinic, came to New Zealand as teenagers and both studied medicine at Otago University.
