Malaysian students and NZ universities strengthen ties in series of education events
From 13 to 20 May, the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) team in Malaysia supported a series of international education events across the country. The activities were co-funded with education agencies and were organised to raise awareness of the quality of New Zealand’s universities and the breadth of education opportunities for Malaysian students.
The initiative kicked-off with a series of education fairs held at MARA Colleges in Kuala Lumpur, Ledang, and Lenggong from 13 to 16 May. MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) is the Malaysian Government Scholarship Provider and supports Malaysian students to pursue higher education at home or abroad. At these fairs, ENZ and participating New Zealand universities partnered with IDP to engage with diploma students from MARA who are looking to continue their bachelor's degrees overseas.

ENZ followed this event by co-hosting another education fair in Kuala Lumpur with AECC Global Malaysia from 17 to 19 May. This event attracted approximately 100 enthusiastic students interested in pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at New Zealand universities.

Prospective international students from East Malaysia were then offered the opportunity to learn more about studying in New Zealand at an information session in Kuching from 19 to 20 May. This session was held in collaboration with the city's leading education agency, MMS, and gave students valuable insights into New Zealand's academic landscape, empowering them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their future education.

ENZ’s Regional Director, Asia (excluding China) and Acting General Manager of International, Ben Burrowes, highlighted the importance of conducting such events in Malaysia.
“Running student recruitment activities like these in Malaysia are a core part of ENZ’s strategy to promote diversity within New Zealand’s international student community.
“They also serve to foster cultural exchange and mutual growth, strengthening the enduring ties between our nations that were originally established through the Colombo Plan,” said Ben.
ENZ’s Market Manager for Indonesia and Malaysia, Naluri Bella, added that it was positive to see so much interest in learning more about studying in New Zealand from students right across the country.
“In an effort to broaden the reach of our recruitment efforts, ENZ and agents also connected with international schools in Malaysia. Our PR activity also gained traction with local media who shared details of our information sessions.
“This approach really underscores our commitment to fostering educational exchanges and facilitating pathways for Malaysian students to pursue higher education in New Zealand,” said Naluri.

Europe agent promotion fund winners
Four creative and innovative projects from agents across Europe were selected for ENZ Europe’s 2018 Agent Promotion Fund.
Content: Olga Elli, ENZ’s Education Marketing Manager – Europe, said the fund of 2,500 EUR supports creative and innovative projects that promote New Zealand as a world-leading study destination.
“We received a number of really exciting proposals from agents across Germany, Italy, Spain and France,” said Olga.
“While only four agents were awarded funding to implement their ideas, it’s encouraging to see the enthusiasm and creativity in this market from agents eager to send students to New Zealand for an excellent education experience.”
The winners of the 2018 Agent Promotion Fund are:
This agent will use funding to support the Kiwi-Cup Hockey Tournament in Hamburg in June, which more than 300 students aged 11-14 years old attend. Hausch & Partner believe that education and sports have always been a winning combination, and that this tournament is a great opportunity to promote New Zealand to these students.
This agent will implement a digital promotion package via Facebook, LinkedIn and a New Zealand blog. As a new agent promoting New Zealand, they have found that online campaigns offer some of the best results and conversions in the Italian market.
This agent will implement a digital promotion campaign in France through social media channels, newsletters and alumni stories. They plan to use ENZ key messages to promote the significant benefits that students can gain from studying in the New Zealand education system.
Under the title “Please don’t disturb – I’m already in New Zealand!”, this virtual reality project will introduce VR headsets to their stands at the 45 international education fairs they attend in Germany each year.

ENZ Regional Partners Workshop lands in Queenstown
This was ENZ’s twelfth Regional Partners Workshop, coordinated under ENZ’s Regional Partnership Programme which aims to ensure that regions throughout New Zealand increasingly share the benefits of international education.
Jo Keane, ENZ Business Development Manager, said the workshops are a chance to bring together regional representatives of international education to receive professional development training and learn the latest news and updates from ENZ.
“ENZ is committed to the development of international education in the regions. We work closely with our Regional Partners across 15 regions to grow value, deliver an excellent student experience and create global citizenship opportunities – in line with the goals of the International Education Strategy.
“Of course, our regional partners need to ensure their local communities see the benefits of international education too. For this reason, a key focus of the latest workshop was empowering our regional representatives to ‘Tell the Story’ of international education in their communities, with a session on news media and communication skills.”
The group also heard presentations from representatives of Destination Queenstown, Queenstown Resort College and Queenstown Lakes District Council on the opportunities and challenges for the region across tourism, infrastructure and international education.
Representatives from the Secondary International Education Business Association (SIEBA) also presented, focussing on partnership with the regions.

Development of new international education strategy underway
Chief Executive Grant McPherson says Education New Zealand is aiming for a strategy that offers a step change in thinking, enjoys wide support and paves the way for sustained quality outcomes for all stakeholders, especially international students.
"International education touches many parts of our country and many individuals, organisations and businesses. We want everybody to see themselves reflected in the strategy. That means casting the net wide in its development."“We are setting out to challenge and be challenged – we encourage all interested parties to be involved in strategy development.”
International student numbers and the economic value of the international education industry have grown steadily since the Leadership Statement for International Education was released in 2011.
In announcing the development of the new strategy at conference, Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce said that while the Leadership Statement set aspirational targets for the industry out to 2025, it is now time for a new plan that offers a clear view of the opportunities and challenges ahead, as well as an aligned strategy across government to inform and lead industry development.
Grant says that the new international education strategy is an opportunity for New Zealand to consolidate its current position and use it as a platform for future growth.
“Building sustainable growth in international education will require a diversified and innovative approach that looks to the future.
“We’re interested in rebalancing the targets across social, cultural and economic values as well as outcomes and experiences.
“While student mobility remains important, we’ll be increasing our focus on our education expertise in products and services which is an area of enormous opportunity for New Zealand.
“We are setting out to challenge and be challenged – we encourage all interested parties to be involved in strategy development.” – Grant McPherson, Chief Executive, Education New Zealand
“It’s also important that the contribution of international education to our regional communities and economies is emphasised in the strategy.”
Work is underway on planning for broad engagement with stakeholders over the next couple of months (see below to register for a workshop), followed by consultation on the draft strategy in January and February. A focus is on making involvement as straightforward as possible for industry participants through online and direct engagement.
