    Director of Insights for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), Marie Clark, and Student Experience Manager, Ross Crosson will be hosting a webinar on 22 August 2024 from 7-8pm NZST on the recently released 2024 Student Experience Survey results. The webinar is for anyone in our sector who is interested in delving more into the data.

    Marie and Ross will talk about the overall student experience for international students enrolled with a New Zealand education provider and where improvements can be made to enhance the international student experience.

  • Record audience for ECE symposium streamed live from China 

    Thousands watched the third annual New Zealand – China Early Childhood Education Symposium, as it was livestreamed from Guilin in southern China on 23 September 2022. A further 200 attendees were present at the event in Guilin, and New Zealand presenters and attendees joined via webinar. 

    Sponsored by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), the New Zealand Embassy in China, and the China Centre for International People to People Exchange, and co-organised by Guangxi Normal University, the 2022 Symposium’s theme was: Together for a Shared Future: Sustainable Development in Early Childhood Education and Care. 

    Thought-provoking and inspirational presentations covered a wide range of topics, including education systems, language development and practical examples of play-based learning. You can view the 2022 ECE Symposium programme, including details of the presenters, here. 

    Miranda Herbert at a media engagement with Chinese news channels

    Miranda Herbert, ENZ’s Regional Director for Greater China was invited to an interview with Guilin TV to explain our collaboration with China’s Ministry of Education, to support dialogue around best practice in the early childhood education field.  The event was also covered by other key news outlets in China, including Guangming Daily, a national Chinese-language daily newspaper published in the People's Republic of China.   

    “New Zealand is recognised as one of the first partners with China for early childhood education, as a result of the symposium,” Ms Herbert said.  

    “Now in its third year, the symposium has grown from strength to strength each year, and is highly valued by the Ministry of Education in China.” 

    Representatives from Te Rito Maioha presented a talk on the theme 'My language and my culture are my identity'.

    Arapera Card, Senior Advisor Māori at Te Rito Maioha, said meeting the organisers both from Beijing and Aotearoa set a sense of whanaungatanga and manaakitanga ahead of the symposium. 

    “As an organisation Te Rito Maioha found this experience to be overall well executed and amazed at the number of participants across China.  That was lovely to see, and should the opportunity come around again, we will be sure to increase the numbers of participants attending from Aotearoa.  The line-up of presenters from both countries absolutely showed that the early childhood sector is in good hands,” Ms Card said.   

    New Zealand and China have been collaborating on early childhood education since 2020 and this is now an item under the mechanism of the Joint Working Group on Education and Training, last held in February 2021.

  • From the CE: Coming together to offer a New Zealand Education online

    Through this initiative, we’re bringing a New Zealand education to those who can’t be onshore due to COVID-19 restrictions. We’re also tapping into a wider audience of learners looking for online options, and developing a pipeline of learners seeking a pathway to study in New Zealand.

    This initiative supports the Government’s Recovery Plan for our international education sector. Part 3 of the Plan led by Education New Zealand, Transforming to a more sustainable future state, has accelerated the diversification of products and services, one of three goals set out in the New Zealand International Education Strategy.

    ENZ is supporting the international education sector through this initiative by facilitating engagement with a global audience online. Our partnership with FutureLearn lets us explore the value of promoting New Zealand content under a national online banner, as well as the benefits of partnering with third parties who have existing online audiences.

    Some quick day-one statistics that I would like to share with you. We had close to 1,000 enrolments in a New Zealand-based course within the first 24 hours of launching. I expect to see very strong enrolment numbers once the promotional campaign funded by ENZ begins today (9 June).

    FutureLearn host quality online courses that help learners build skills and upskill in areas of interest or need, from home – with potential to continue study in country (when border restrictions ease sufficiently) or continue online where available. The New Zealand collection collated for this initiative includes short courses from universities, English language and TESOL educators, vocational/institutes of technology and edtech educators including virtual reality developers and game designers. ENZ has funded the initial eight-week promotional campaign to celebrate the FutureLearn initiative’s launch.

    We understand sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor in a student’s study choices. Research commissioned by ENZ in May 2021 indicated that 79 percent of responders showed interest in studying sustainability and climate change as a subject.

    Moreover, the QS Environmental Concerns Survey in 2019 found 79 percent of prospective international students were “somewhat more likely” or “much more likely” to choose a degree if the content helped them to learn about reducing their environmental impact.

    A survey undertaken by Times Higher Education in April 2021 on students, sustainability and study choices showed that 80 percent believe in living their lives as sustainable citizens.

    To cater for this, more than half of the courses included in this initiative are themed around sustainability. Courses like teaching and learning for sustainable education, English language for sustainability, and growing a sustainable workforce. It’s a great demonstration to the world that we take our cultural value of kaitiakitanga seriously.

  • NZGCC for teachers

    Specifically designed to support teachers to teach in multicultural settings and deliver on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the NZGCC Educator version was completed by 118 teacher participants from Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam in this cohort. 

    Since late 2020, around 1,415 participants have benefited from the NZGCC programme – both domestic and international students from high schools and tertiary institutions, as well as domestic and international teachers. 

    The NZGCC develops self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution and flexibility—skills that bridge differences and develop true global citizens. The next stage of this initiative is expected to include delivering the NZGCC to Prime Minister’s Scholars before they head off for their international education experience. 

    Here is a selection of the enthusiastic feedback we received from participants in these last cohorts: 

    “It has taught me a lot about global issues, my role as an educator and most importantly, I have learnt about myself. This course has forced me to look into who I really am as a person and how I could be a better global citizen.” 

    “I learnt how to be a global citizen, and the things I can do to make this world a better place, whether as an individual or as an educator.” 

    “Thanks to the new tools I have received from the course, I’m more confident to inspire more people from all walks of life, to step up their journey to enhance cultural competence and cultural intelligence.” 

    “The course is not only about how to be a global citizen. I learnt so much practical knowledge which helps to improve my skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Thank you so much ENZ, Massey University, and AFS for such a valuable program.” 

    “Thank Massey University, Ms. Donna (facilitator) and ENZ for giving me such an honourable scholarship. I can’t imagine that I will have a chance to study with people from different countries with different backgrounds. By studying and doing research on the modules in the course, I not only understand myself but also know how to sympathize with others who are quite different from me. Besides, I can also apply what I have learnt to my teaching at school. I feel so lucky and proud of myself because I can step out of my comfort zone to communicate and share my own experiences with the participants as well as my beloved teacher, Ms. Donna.   • ENZ seeks Expressions of Interest to grow the Thai schools’ sector

    In 2023, enrolments from Thailand were the fifth largest for New Zealand’s schools with most enrolments coming from students living in Bangkok. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is now looking to grow this market by collaborating with New Zealand schools and regional Thai education agents to build partnerships with schools in cities outside the capital city (referred to as ‘second tier’ cities).

    The initiative, called the Thailand Second Tier City Promotion is planned to run in 2025-2026. ENZ is currently seeking feedback from New Zealand schools to measure interest in participating in the promotion and is running a survey until Tuesday 30 October 2024 for interested schools. 

    Collaborative school clusters are invited to participate in the initiative which will form sister school partnerships with regional Thai schools. Each cluster should consist of at least three schools.

    Through these partnerships, a wide range of study options for Thai students and schools will be available. This may include short-term 4-week school immersion programmes, 1 to 2 terms or full year study programmes, teacher trainings, virtual interaction, online curriculum-based collaborative projects etc. 

    ENZ’s Acting General Manager - International, Mr Ben Burrowes, said that over the years New Zealand has built a very strong reputation as a high-quality education destination particularly amongst students from Bangkok. He says that this helped the market rebound significantly post-Covid. 

    “With the international education market in Bangkok now highly saturated, ENZ sees this promotion as a good opportunity to help schools reach an untapped market in regions across Thailand. 

    “Through working with high performing regional education agencies and in collaboration with New Zealand schools, our initiative aims to support the development of sister school partnerships in each province,” said Ben.  

    “This is a strategic move to raise the profile of New Zealand’s school sector and grow interests from a new pool of prospective students and their parents,” added Ben.
