Supporting university recruitment and raising New Zealand’s profile in Viet Nam
Building on the programme first introduced in 2025, NZUA 2026 is larger and more flexible. It continues to serve as a key tool for student recruitment and for building long-term connections in Viet Nam.
In 2026, there are 15 scholarships available, each worth NZD $15,000 for the first year of undergraduate study. The scholarships are offered at six New Zealand universities: University of Auckland, University of Waikato, Massey University, Lincoln University, University of Canterbury and University of Otago. The awards help universities connect with high‑achieving Vietnamese students for whom receiving a scholarship is both a major achievement and a source of pride.
The programme was first introduced following Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s visit to Viet Nam in 2025. It recognises students’ academic achievement, creativity and leadership, while showcasing the strengths of New Zealand’s university system.
A key feature of NZUA is that students can combine the award with other university scholarships (depending on each university’s rules). This helps make studying in New Zealand more affordable and strengthens New Zealand’s competitiveness in attracting undergraduate students.
The 2026 programme offers greater flexibility in entry requirements while maintaining strong academic standards. Applications are submitted online and require academic documents, an offer of place from a New Zealand university, and a short video introducing the student and their goals.
The awards have already generated strong visibility for New Zealand education, with coverage in major Vietnamese media. This helps reinforce New Zealand’s reputation among students, parents and education agents.
Applications are open until 12 July 2026. The successful applicants will be announced in early September followed by an awards ceremony in October.
Through NZUA, ENZ continues to work closely with New Zealand universities to build long‑term engagement in Viet Nam, support sustainable growth in student enrolments, and align scholarships with wider international education and brand goals. -
2026 sector survey coming soon
The annual sector survey is an important way for ENZ to hear from New Zealand international education providers about how we’re doing, which services you value, and where you’d like to see more support.
Last year, your feedback highlighted the value of our offshore events and connections, as well as our insights work. You told us you wanted more transparency and more opportunities to provide feedback through our business planning.
We have worked hard to respond. This has included providing peak bodies with opportunities to check in during the planning process and asking for input on how ENZ's activities can best support the sector.
Your feedback remains critical in helping us improve how we support New Zealand’s international education sector – from our marketing and brand work to our insights and data offerings, to our offshore events and connections.
A survey link will be sent to providers in the coming weeks. Thank you in advance for taking part – we look forward to hearing your views.

Malaysian roadshow highlights universities and pathways in New Zealand
The week-long programme showcased New Zealand’s diverse education offerings while enabling meaningful connections between institutions, prospective students, school counsellors, and key government stakeholders.
Spanning three key Malaysian cities – Johor Bahru, Penang and Kuala Lumpur – the roadshow featured a range of targeted activities, from school visits and counsellor networking to an education expo and student-facing events. These activities highlighted New Zealand’s commitment to building long-term education partnerships in Malaysia, supporting student recruitment, and raising awareness of New Zealand as a high-quality and welcoming study destination.
Delivered in partnership with leading agents IDP Malaysia and SUN Education Malaysia, the roadshow brought together eight New Zealand universities and four pathway providers.
A strong focus was placed on school engagement and outreach. Across Johor Bahru and Penang, New Zealand institutions participated in a series of mini school fairs at leading international schools, giving students direct access to information on study options and pathways.
Alongside this, engagement with school counsellors helped strengthen relationships and expand awareness among key influencers. Sessions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur brought together counsellors from international and Chinese Independent Schools for presentations, informal Q&A discussions, and a networking brunch attended by partners such as Pearson and Cambridge. New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Mike Walsh joined the brunch, emphasising strong government support for education connections.
In Kuala Lumpur, student recruitment activity culminated in the Study with New Zealand Expo, which attracted around 163 students and parents. The event featured presentations from New Zealand education providers, one-on-one consultations, an academic masterclass from the University of Otago, and alumni sharing sessions – offering students a comprehensive view of studying in New Zealand.
The programme also included participation in the ANZAC Day Dawn Service, which was an opportunity for New Zealand providers to connect around shared values and strengthen community ties.
In Kuala Lumpur, a working meeting was held with MARA (Malaysia’s government scholarship body) to talk about support for MARA-sponsored students. New Zealand institutions shared examples of academic and pastoral care. The meeting was followed by a call to the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, meeting with Prof Dr Zainal Amin Ayub (Deputy Director General of Higher Education Academic & Research), focused on strengthening academic collaboration, expanding research opportunities and exploring potential scholarship opportunities for Malaysian academics and staff.
Ben Burrowes, ENZ Regional Director Asia (excluding China), said the roadshow reinforced the value of in-market engagement.
“Connecting directly with students, counsellors and government partners in Malaysia allows us to showcase the breadth of New Zealand’s education offering while strengthening the relationships that support long-term student pathways.”
Overall, the roadshow demonstrated the strong and growing interest in New Zealand education across the region. By bringing institutions directly to students and stakeholders, it reinforced New Zealand’s reputation for quality education, supportive learning environments, and global opportunities.
Through continued collaboration with partners in Malaysia, ENZ remains committed to strengthening education ties and supporting future student pathways to New Zealand.
