Summer safety messages
Following the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, tsunami and aftershocks, Civil Defence began a nationwide safety advertising campaign to ensure people know the warning signs and life-saving actions to take.
The campaign will be reinstated again this summer, from 17 December to 13 January, and includes a number of resources to be used across digital and social media to support the television, radio and video on-demand ads.
What can you do?
- Encourage your school to include tsunami planning in its emergency plans when it returns in February
- Share tsunami zone maps on your website and social media
- Use social media posts, posters, web buttons and banners, digital ads, videos online and in your publications
- Share translated resources with non-English speaking communities
- Share other resources with staff, stakeholders and members of the public.

South America webinars a success
Last week, the ENZ South America team organised the first New Zealand Regional Webinars Marathon for education agents in South America, sharing information about education, tourism, economy and local industries from around New Zealand.
The webinars were presented by representatives from regional organisations and hosted by ENZ. Javiera Visedo, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager Colombia and Chile said webinars are an effective and low cost marketing tool that allows them to provide training for agents without moving from their desks.
“Agents are not able to attend all the education fairs, which can also be a big piece of work for our team. The webinars are a great way to solve both those issues, and allows us to connect with agents across the region without having to hold an in-person event,” said Javiera.
“In a large region like ours, we need to be creative!”
The sessions focussed on cities such as Dunedin, Wellington, Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown, presented by regional representatives Margo Reid of Study Dunedin, Christine Pugh of Grow Wellington, Meri Gibson of Rotorua Education, Karen Haigh of Christchurch Educated and Aaron Halstead of Study Queenstown.
The South American team said the webinars were a great success with more than 1,000 registrations and nearly 650 attendances - an average of 130 agents per session.
The majority of participants were from Brazil and Colombia, the largest markets in the region, though agents from Argentina, Peru and Ecuador also took part, reflecting a large interest in New Zealand education from the region.

Flying Kiwis off to Chile
“We’ve had a fantastic response to this year’s call for Flying Kiwi nominations. Forty one schools from all around New Zealand put forward some outstanding students for consideration – it’s been a quite a task to narrow it down to just seven students,” says Mr McPherson.
“These senior Spanish students will spend three weeks in Santiago, going to school and living with Chilean families, immersing themselves in the language and the culture.” The Flying Kiwis programme was developed in response to the successful Chilean government-sponsored Penguins without Borders programme which sees Chilean students coming to New Zealand to study. “New Zealand is the first country to develop such an exchange with Chile and I am thrilled to be able to give our young people the chance to experience a taste of the Chilean way of life. “One of last year’s Flying Kiwis said he wasn’t very confident speaking Spanish before he went but the experience in Santiago helped him get top marks in end of year exams. And he plans to go back to South America in the future.
“Flying Kiwis and Penguins without Borders create bonds between our countries and lifelong connections for both the Chilean and New Zealand students taking part,” says Mr McPherson. Almost 240 ‘Penguins’ have studied in New Zealand since January 2013. There are currently 96 Chilean young people studying at schools in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Chile is a small but growing source of students for New Zealand and is our second largest source of students from South America, after Brazil. Chilean high school students value the opportunity to improve their English language skills as they experience a different culture and lifestyle living with New Zealand families.

India’s Welcome2NewZealand series kick-starts event season
Jugnu Roy, ENZ’s Country Manager for India, said Welcome2NewZealand was an opportunity to discuss the current visa regulations, thank agents for their patience through uncertain times and a recent drop in student numbers, and to emphasise ENZ’s student recruitment strategy of moving from volume to value.
"We were very pleased with how the sessions went and have had positive feedback,” said Jugnu.
Held in New Delhi and Chandigarh, the event had ENZ Recognised Agents (ENZRA), licensed immigration advisors (LIA) and other high-performing student consultants in attendance, along with NZ Inc partners.
Welcome2NewZealand included sessions on ENZ’s strategy for the India market, and an update from Immigration New Zealand on policy instructions and how they would like to work with high-performing agents to get high-calibre students into New Zealand.
The New Zealand High Commissioner to India, Joanna Kempkers, chaired the sessions, along with John Laxon, ENZ’s Regional Director South and South East Asia and Middle East, and Daniel Smidt, Area Manager for INZ.
Jugnu said similar events for agents are planned in other Indian cities later this year.
In Bengaluru, ENZ partnered with the FPP EduExpo fair for the first time, following good reviews from colleagues in other markets.
Jugnu said the event was a nice change from previous student fairs that have been very USA- and Australia-focussed.
“In India, we wanted to explore a multi-country event. It’s a cost effective way of flying the New Zealand flag and profiling the country as a world class study destination.”
Jugnu said more than 1000 students attended the fair, with some 77 percent looking at postgraduate qualifications overseas.
“A number of Bangalore students were interested in courses at New Zealand institutions, ranging from environment and sustainability, architecture, biochemistry to specialist engineering programmes.
“It emphasised the importance of student fairs in profiling New Zealand as a high-quality education destination, attracting capable and talented Indian students.”
