  • Victoria offering New Zealand’s first bicultural MOOC

    Developed as a series, New Zealand Landscape as Culture will explore how people express their culture through perspectives on the landscapes they live in. The course will incorporate mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori, and introduce ideas from both Māori and Pākehā cultures, exploring the geology, popular culture, politics, art and literature of landscape.

    Steven Warburton, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Digital Futures) and director of VictoriaX, the university’s MOOC platform, said the new series shows the variety of courses that the university is able to share with students online.

    “Our MOOC programme is an important addition to the broad range of Victoria courses offered, as it gives domestic and international learners a high quality educational experience with our world-class academics,” he said.

    “This MOOC showcases Victoria’s role in enriching national culture, and is the latest in an exciting line-up of VictoriaX courses to be delivered.”

    The New Zealand Landscape as Culture series will begin with the four-week course, Islands (Ngā Motu), starting November 10, 2017.

    Victoria launched its debut MOOC in April this year, Antarctica: From Geology to Human History, which attracted more than 5000 enrolments.

    Victoria is the only New Zealand university to offer courses through the edX platform, founded by prestigious US universities Harvard and MIT in 2012. 

  • Universities New Zealand to strengthen ties with India

    Stronger ties between New Zealand and India at the university level are a key outcome of the Prime Minister John Key’s visit to India currently underway.

    Universities New Zealand (UNZ) has made two announcements: development of an engagement strategy to strengthen relationships with India and attract more university students to New Zealand; and a Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with the Maharashtra State Government.

    Professor Harlene Hayne, Chair of Universities New Zealand and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, says, “Currently, students from India make up five per cent of the 26,000 international students who are studying at a New Zealand university. 

    “We recognise there is significant potential to attract and welcome increasing numbers of university-level students from India.”

    The strategy builds on an increasing university market presence in India, with student visas for first-time university students from India up 18 per cent through to August 2016. Professor Hayne says the UNZ India Strategy, which will be formally launched in early 2017, will see New Zealand’s universities working collectively to promote study in New Zealand, and to further develop and strengthen partnerships between institutions in India and New Zealand.

    UNZ and ENZ are co-sponsoring the strategy. ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, says, “We are delighted to partner with our universities in India, and applaud their leadership in investing in the long-term future of this hugely important market.”

    The Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with Maharashtra State Government provides a framework to explore academic opportunities between the two countries, added Professor Haynes.

    Maharashtra State Government in Western India is the second most populous state in India with over 112 million inhabitants. Its capital, Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million. Maharashtra has 24 universities with a turnout of 160,000 graduates every year, while New Zealand has eight universities and 43,000 graduates each year.

     “This strategic agreement offers us an avenue to build institutional engagement between our universities, through faculty relationships and exchanges, research and innovation collaboration, and information sharing.”

    The full programme is now available. Among the featured highlights are the following sessions. 

    • Inspirational keynote speaker and founder of Inspiring Stories, Guy Ryan will kick things off by discussing how we can Navigate the needs of future learners. Guy has spoken internationally and at home to more than 25,000 people, including TEDx and World Forums. 
    • The topic of Resilience and mental wellness in under-represented international students will be explored by Marcela Lapertosa and Huong Diep. They will look at the issues that affect international students while discussing strategies and providing tools to foster resilience in a culturally appropriate manner. 
    • We will harness the power of the ANZAC spirit by having a look at ANZAC perspectives: strategies, leading indicators and busting international education myths in Australia and New Zealand. This session will ask attendees to compare what’s the same and what’s unique for New Zealand and will challenge them to think about what this means for decisions in our sector. 
    • It’s time for New Zealand to take a bolder approach to our education brand positioning. In the session I am New. Repositioning the New Zealand Education brand for success, Paul Irwin, ENZ General Manager Partnerships & Marketing, and Kaylee Butters, ENZ Director Brand and Design, will launch a new long-term brand platform for New Zealand that focuses on a high value audience, redefines what a quality education means and is grounded in New Zealand’s unique strengths, both as a country and as an education system. This session will also cover what this could mean for your international marketing. 
    • As part of our celebration of Japan as the NZIEC Country of Honour, we welcome guest speakers from Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and Atsugi City Board of Education. We look forward to presenting a renewed, strategic partnership with Japan to provide new business opportunities for New Zealand providers. We will also look at ways to foster meaningful connections between New Zealand and Japan through a wide range of exchange activities with students and teachers from the two countries.
    • Dan Smidt (ENZ), Andrew Galloway and Pii-Tuulia Nikula bring together a range of perspectives and experiences to discuss effective monitoring of education agents; best approaches and potential benefits.
    • On day two, keynote speakers, Dr Lisa Coleman, Chief Diversity Officer of New York University, will explore a world of diversity, while Professor Chris Gallivan of Massey University will finish the conference by giving a not-to-be missed exploration of navigating education transformation.

  • Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Books

    New Zealand’s Guest of Honour presence at the Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE) had a strong education flavour as Education New Zealand staff and six education publishers participated alongside a cast of leading New Zealand authors and other New Zealand publishers.

    Education New Zealand contributed $100,000 to New Zealand organiser Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ) to support the participation of the Wendy Pye Group, ESA Publications; MJA Publishing; Lanky Hippo Publishing; the New Zealand Council for Educational Research; and Clean Slate Press at TIBE held over 11 – 16 February 2015.

    TIBE is the largest book fair in Asia and acts as a gateway to the region. In 2014, TIBE had more than 500,000 visitors, over 1,000 events for visitors or publishers, more than 700 domestic and international reporters and 423 international publishing houses in attendance. 

    This year TIBE brought in free entry for school-aged children, which was expected to boost visitor numbers as well as providing an expanded audience for Education New Zealand’s “Study in New Zealand” messaging.

    New Zealand’s Guest of Honour status ensured that we received prime positioning within the fair venue as well as enhanced interest and attention from media; Taiwan authorities; and industry representatives seeking to buy rights. 

    A wide-ranging programme included strong publisher presence, public presentations, kapa haka performances, carving by the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Council/Ngā Kete Tuku Iho, a visiting author programme, and offsite events including an art exhibition. The eye-catching New Zealand Pavilion – in a design of three Māori tokotoko (orator’s sticks) – exemplified New Zealand’s “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Books” theme.

    “Education New Zealand has previously supported our education publishers’ attendance at such key international trade events, as it gives them the opportunity to explore new markets and opportunities in a dedicated business setting”, said ENZ’s Business Development Manager, Adele Bryant.

    “Dame Wendy Pye was busy at her stand following up leads she attributed to attendance at Frankfurt 2012 where New Zealand was also Guest of Honour and ENZ supported education publishers.”

    While the delegation of education publishers represented a mix of experienced and new exporters, all were united in having high-quality products that represented New Zealand's reputation for innovation and quality education. 

    “ENZ support for TIBE and earlier scoping visits to Hong Kong and Seoul has helped profile our strengths in education publishing to Asian publishers. The New Zealand delegation has been able to understand how their product can better fit the market as well as meet new business leads”, said Adele.

    ENZ’s Regional Director – Greater China, Alexandra Grace, also delivered presentations profiling New Zealand as a high-quality education destination that fosters innovation and creativity in its students.

    “It was inspiring to deliver these presentations as part of New Zealand’s Guest of Honour programme”, said Alex.

    “Being part of a programme that included such creative and talented New Zealanders as Eleanor Catton, Witi Ihimaera, and Joy Cowley – not to mention our education publishers, who are seeking to inspire, delight, and educate children around the world with their innovative learning tools – was a real buzz. Their presence complemented perfectly the message I was seeking to make about New Zealand as a place where ideas and talent are nurtured and developed.”

    “I was also able to point to Eleanor Catton and Witi Ihimaera – both of whom teach at Manukau Institute of Technology – as being event-appropriate examples of how New Zealand delivers applied education in a way that is closely linked to industry.”

    Education New Zealand will continue to work with TIBE participants and other education publishers to assist them in finding opportunities to promote their products, skills and expertise offshore; as well as working to promote New Zealand as an education destination of choice to students from Taiwan.

  • Record numbers at Viet Nam fairs

    More than 300 students visited the fair in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City attendance was up 86 per cent to more than 700 students, resulting in queues to speak to New Zealand institutions. 

    The fairs showcased 34 New Zealand education institutions from secondary schools, private English language colleges to technical colleges and tertiary institutions, all promoting their courses and campus life to Vietnamese students.

    Students and their parents also had the opportunity to learn about the various scholarships that are available from Viet Nam International Education Development and New Zealand Aid.

    Ziena Jalil, ENZ Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia said: “Viet Nam is an important market for New Zealand education institutions. With nearly 2,000 Vietnamese students already studying in New Zealand, it is the second largest source market within ASEAN for international students.

    “This year’s fairs in Viet Nam helped showcase the true spirit of New Zealand’s innovative education system and the pastoral care commitment that New Zealand institutions have for all students.”

  • High numbers of student and visitor visa applications

    Jeannie Melville, INZ’s Assistant General Manager, Visa Services says this is typical for this time of year and will likely continue until March 2019.

    “Due to the high application volumes currently being received, we strongly recommend that visitor and student visa applications are submitted as early as possible.

    “Student visas should be submitted at least eight weeks ahead of their intended travel date, while visitor visas should be submitted as soon as possible in advance of travel. This gives INZ time to assess the application and gather more information from the applicant if needed.”

    The fastest and easiest way to apply for a visa is to use the Immigration Online system via the INZ website, where applicants can upload supporting documents, photographs and pay for their application.

    While INZ makes every effort to streamline assessment of applications, applicants may experience longer timeframes if they do not supply all required information (including translations) when they submit their application. If they do not supply the correct information this could hold up the processing of their visa.

    INZ does not advise purchase of travel before an application is completed as the grant of a visa is not guaranteed. In particular, assessment of visitor visa applications will not be prioritised if the sole reason is that the applicant has pre-purchased travel.

    Education providers can refer students to the INZ website for visa processing timeframes, which applicants should take into account when applying for their visa and planning their travel.
