• Showcasing New Zealand education at Expo Dubai

  Representatives from the University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand education technology company ByteEd and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao met with key contacts and forged new relationships during their 22-25 January 2022 visit to the Expo.  

  Events were hosted at the New Zealand Pavilion, and the delegation invited education stakeholders to take a new look at what New Zealand education has to offer, including online and pathway options. Attendees heard more from New Zealand’s universities and vocational training sectors, learned about government-to-government opportunities, and met with innovative New Zealand EdTech companies working in the region.  The winners of the Global Kaitiakitanga Project, a sustainability-focused programme for New Zealand schools created by the NZ at Expo team and Young Enterprise (YES), also shared their student experience.   

  Guests at our events gained an insight into New Zealand’s unique cultural identity, with a tour through the New Zealand experience at the pavilion and performances from locally based kapa haka group Ngāti Koraha.  

  The leader of the education delegation, ENZ’s Regional Director, Americas, Middle East and Europe, Amy Rutherford, was interviewed by New Zealander Brandy Scott on the popular business breakfast show Dubai Eye. The interview aired on 24 January, to coincide with UNESCO’s International Day of Education.

  While in Dubai, the delegation took part in the launch of NCUK’s International Foundation Year (IFY) at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. The IFY programme will lead to UAE and other students from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and further afield studying at any of New Zealand’s eight universities in 2023 and beyond.  

  ENZ also held a workshop with delegates to look at ways to align our efforts in the GCC countries and wider Middle East region.  

  Expo is the largest global event to take place since the Covid-19 pandemic began. As at the end of January, organisers had recorded 11,608,240 visits to Expo, and the New Zealand Pavilion had over 750,000 visitors.  

  “It was important for ENZ and delegation members to show up and tell the New Zealand education story to the world.  New Zealand remains keen to cooperate with partners on education, we have innovative ways to offer a New Zealand education, and we are looking forward to welcoming students to New Zealand again as soon as border restrictions allow,” Amy Rutherford says.

• From the CE: Rebuilding and reshaping our sector

  The Recovery Plan for International Education, released in late July, is a plan to support the rebuild, recovery and reset of the international education sector with an eye on the future. It’s made up of three concurrent workstreams to stabilise, strengthen and transform international education.

  Since its release, Education New Zealand, with other government agencies, has been carrying out a short, focused engagement on the plan with our peak bodies and providers.

  So far, we’ve met with representatives from groups, including schools, some PTEs, parts of the university sector, ITPs and English language sectors, as well as the New Zealand International Students’ Association and EdTech NZ. And further meetings are scheduled.

  We have heard from you on a variety of topics. Naturally, the most common concern is around student re-entry. Other topics focused on encouraging cross-sector collaboration and hearing student voices as we rebuild our sector. We also know that each part of the sector has its own unique challenges and needs.

  These conversations are only the beginning of our engagement with you. There will be many more opportunities to discuss and collaborate as part of the strengthening and transforming workstreams of the Plan, and on the Government’s vision for international education.

  Next, the Ministry of Education and ENZ will co-host deep-dive workshops with sub-sectors on both the Recovery Plan and issues particular to them.

  Here at ENZ, we have realigned our activities and resources to implement the Recovery Plan. We have launched our new business plan for 2020/2021, called Building a New Future. 

  There are major areas for us to focus on, including the retention of as many students already in New Zealand as possible, early re-entry of students, renewing and reshaping future options (such as different modes of delivery and student decision-making), and creating deeper understanding of the benefits of international education, both in New Zealand and globally. 

  I’d like to reinforce that throughout this change, the goals of New Zealand’s International Education Strategy – an excellent education and student experience, sustainable growth, and global citizens – remain our beacon on the hill.

• What's new in IntelliLab

  The visa dashboard has a new look, and now uses valid student visas (VSV) as the lead indicator for student numbers, as VSV is less influenced by external factors such as multiple visas for one student. First time student visas (FSV) is the other key indicator, which reveals the number of new students choosing to study in New Zealand.

  More in-depth visa information is now available through IVY, the interactive visa tool. IVY is updated monthly, so users will need to download a new copy each month to access the most up-to-date information.

  The interactive enrolments tool TED (The Enrolments Data) has also been updated. You may notice revised student numbers when comparing student nationalities by New Zealand region – this is due to the large number of unfunded PTE and ELS students now being assigned to regions based on their provider’s location. However, the top-line numbers, such as total number of students and students by country, remain unchanged.

• Navitas and University of Canterbury strengthen ties

  The University of Canterbury (UC) and global education provider Navitas have strengthened their partnership, reflected in a new UC International College (UCIC) logo.

  Navitas and UC have worked together since 2013, creating UCIC to provide pathway courses for international students. To date, more than 600 international students have enrolled in the programme.

  The new UCIC logo features the University of Canterbury crest, andwas unveiled at a celebratory launch on 31 January. The logo is just one of many changes UCIC has made recently, which includes the appointment of Stewart Brougham as the new College Director and Principal.

  Dr John Wood, CEO of Navitas’ University Partnerships Australasia division, said the changes signal a shift for both institutions.

  “The service we offer international students, alongside the strengths Mr Brougham will bring as College Director, are a new chapter for Navitas and UC. We continue to explore further opportunities to enhance and extend programmes offered through UCIC,” he said.

  Other changes include Qualifying for UC (QUC), a new postgraduate qualifying programme UCIC will deliver from October 2017. It is anticipated to draw international students seeking postgraduate study, but who first want to improve their language, research and project-based skills. UCIC has also changed its teaching practice to better transition students from international backgrounds into the Western university system, ensuring they are better prepared for tertiary study and life in New Zealand.

  Dr Rod Carr, UC Vice Chancellor said their institution is interested in any initiatives that can help international students achieve success in tertiary education.

  “UC is among New Zealand’s most international universities due to the ratio of international staff we have on campus. UC is a welcoming and supportive environment, no matter where in the world you come from,” said Dr Carr.

• Introducing Monika Chaudhary, ENZ’s new Market Manager – Sri Lanka

  Tell us about your professional background

  I am based at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi, India, and work closely with education providers, key education sector and government stakeholders to grow New Zealand’s education presence in Sri Lanka.

  I completed my Master of Arts in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, and worked in Project Manager roles across various community and not-for-profit organisations before transitioning into the international education space. 

  I joined New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) in 2003 as an Education Marketing Executive based in New Delhi, a role that began what is now over 22 years of close and enduring involvement with New Zealand’s higher education sector. These two decades have shaped me deeply as both a professional and a person, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the sector evolve significantly.

  I joined ENZ in 2015 as Market Development Manager for India, playing a key role in growing the New Zealand university sub sector through targeted strategic initiatives. Over a decade working across India, I have also supported education agents and contributed to the development of other education sub sectors.

  How has the new role been so far?

  I’m really enjoying the opportunity to help grow a new market for New Zealand in Sri Lanka. The recent Study with New Zealand Roadshow was a fantastic way to kick start our work in market. Across four days and seven events, we brought together 19 New Zealand education providers and connected with Sri Lankan universities, education agents, schools, and students. 

  It was a huge effort, but a very rewarding start to our market-building journey.

  What opportunities and challenges do you see in Sri Lanka?

  Beyond student mobility, there is strong potential for Transnational Education (TNE) partnerships. Sri Lankan education institutions are increasingly interested in offering New Zealand programmes locally while creating pathways for students to continue their studies in New Zealand.

  While Australia and the UK already have a strong presence in this space, New Zealand has a great opportunity to build visibility, showcase the quality of its education, and develop accessible pathway models for Sri Lankan students. Upskilling education agents will also be key to supporting sustainable growth in the market.

  What will the new Project Advisor – Sri Lanka role focus on?

  I am delighted that Madonna Phillip has joined us as Project Advisor on a fixed-term basis. She hit the ground running, starting in the same week as the Sri Lanka Roadshow. She will support the expansion of ENZ’s promotional activities in Sri Lanka and work closely with New Zealand government agency partners on cross-agency initiatives, including the development of an alumni network and broader collaborative programmes.

  Outside of work, what do you like to do?

  I enjoy challenging myself beyond my comfort zone. While I like to travel within and outside India, the pandemic had me discover new interests, including baking, painting and photography. More recently, I have also taken up gardening. But above all, dancing is something that comes naturally to me – and it’s what I enjoy the most!
