  • Student Visa Dashboard for December 2016

    Student visas only capture students who enter New Zealand with a student visa. These students are mostly those who are planning to study for more than three months.

    Student visa data is a reliable indicator of whether students are entering, remaining or leaving New Zealand. The dashboard contains detailed tables and graphs on the numbers of both first-time and total international student visas issued, with commentary on the trends to date.

    The December 2016 dashboard includes summary level trends comparing to the three year average, year-to-date and the same month in the previous year. It also includes more detailed breakdowns by markets, sectors and regions focusing on year-to-date and monthly trends.

  • EdTech Exported

    This year saw keynote presentations from Frances Valintine, Chair and Founder of The Mind Lab by Unitec; Allison Baum, Managing Director of Fresco Capital in Tokyo; and Frank Catalano, Principal at Intrinsic Strategy in the United States. All three speakers provided strong global perspectives on the product and service opportunities for New Zealand EdTech providers, the investment opportunities, and current trends and ‘fads’ in the sector.

    There were also a number of panels where some of New Zealand’s most successful EdTech companies shared their experiences and insights in exporting EdTech. There were definitely a few laughs involved, but it was both sobering and inspiring to hear first-hand some of the challenges and opportunities New Zealand EdTech exporters encounter and how they handle them.

    There was a clear appetite for networking and sharing among the 130 or so attendees, and it was inspiring to see and hear about the progress being made in this exciting and promising market for New Zealand ingenuity.

  • Haere rā to Brazilian students

    Farewell events for the students have been held around the country, to demonstrate our appreciation of this opportunity, and contribute to the students’ memories of New Zealand. The events also provided an opportunity for diplomats from both countries, and local government representatives to demonstrate the value of international education in building global connections and long-term relationships.

    Events included a sailing trip with Maritime New Zealand, Māori performances, outdoor experiences, and museum tours, organised by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) alongside regional development agencies.

    The final farewell event was online, and included New Zealand Ambassador to Brazil Richard Prendergast, Henrique Choer Moraes, Minister-Counsellor at the Brazilian Embassy in Wellington, and Mr. Roni Miranda Vieira, Director of Education from the Education Secretariat of Paraná state speaking with the students and hearing about their experiences, alongside others involved with the trip. 

    ‘The people were very welcoming – a wonderful experience.’ 

    ‘New Zealand is beautiful, this is the best experience of my life, I’m loving it here!’ 

    ‘We got to know so many places.’ 

    ‘A lovely country and a lovely experience – thank you so much.’ 

    ‘We did a boat cruise in Milford Sound.’ 

    ‘We went with the school to a lot of different places.’ 

    ‘I had a really great time with my host family. They were very kind to me. I’m very sad to leave them.’ 

    ‘I’m getting on very well with my host brother – I think I will miss him when I go back to Brazil.’ 

    ‘It has been an amazing experience – I am learning so many things.’ 

    ‘My host family owns a coffee shop in Rangiora where I go on weekends and have a chance to know different people, they also own a farm and have taught me how to shear a sheep. Another interesting thing I noticed is that depending on the city, I hear a different accent.’ 

    ENZ’s Market Development Manager in Brazil, Bruna de Natale, says this was the first big group of students to come to New Zealand after our borders reopened. 

    “We had all been waiting eagerly for New Zealand’s borders to open again so this programme could get underway after almost two years, and I know the Kiwi schools involved were very excited to welcome these students. It was good to hear about the special memories the students will take home from their trip, including how much they learned. For most students, this was their first international experience and for many of them, being in a multi-cultural class in New Zealand was a very different experience from home. 

    “We hope that the students will stay connected to New Zealand and that this experience will be a good basis and incentive for them to explore further international study options in the future – who knows, we might welcome them back to New Zealand someday, that would be lovely!” 

    The study programme is fully funded by the Paraná Government, through Paraná’s Secretary of Education and Sport, and is expected to continue next year for around 2,000 students. We hope that some of them will be able to come to New Zealand.

    Students from Western Heights High School experienced a farewell special day out in Rotorua that included Velocity Valley, ZORB, and the Skyline Rotorua Gondola and Luge, as well as a BBQ lunch.

  • 2017 ISB results: Universities and ITPs

    The ISB is a global study that investigates the decision making, expectations and experiences of international students including their arrival experience, the support they receive from their education provider, the quality of education provided, and their living experience in country.

    Universities sector

    Among the 5,487 international students surveyed from six New Zealand universities, 90 percent were satisfied with their institution experience overall. This is the same percentage as the last wave of the study in 2015 and in line with the global benchmark.

    International students in New Zealand placed higher importance on several work- and visa-related factors than the global average: 77% considered ease of getting a visa to study as important (8% above the global average), 65% considered opportunities for permanent residence as important (6% above the global average) and 73% considered opportunities to work while studying as important (5% above the global average).

    Of the four major components of the survey, universities outperformed the global benchmark on three dimensions:

    And 81% international students in New Zealand would recommend their university to others, which is slightly lower (-2%) than international students globally.

    ITP sector

    Some 3,470 international students from 13 New Zealand ITPs were surveyed, and overall satisfaction remains high at 89%, similar to the proportion in 2015 (+1%) and in line with the global benchmark.

    International students who come to New Zealand ITPs place relatively high importance on employment and employability factors both during and after study: opportunities for permanent residence were rated 12% above the global benchmark, ease of getting a visa and opportunities to work while studying were both 11% above the global benchmark and opportunities for full-time work following their studies was 10% above the global benchmark.

    Of the four major components of the survey, ITPs outperformed the global benchmark on three dimensions:

    Despite high satisfaction, students’ likelihood to recommend their institution to others has fallen to 76%. This is 5% below the global benchmark and a 3% fall since 2015, continuing the downward trend from 82% in 2013.

    Each participating education provider in the ISB survey receives a customised report based on their own international student survey results, which they can use to make informed decisions to enhance the student experience and drive successful recruitment and marketing strategies.

    ENZ, who funds the survey, receives overall aggregate results for each education sector but does not have access to individual provider results.

  • Otago Chemistry lecturer attracts a crowd at Kuching fair

    Jane Goh, ENZ’s Marketing and Strategic Relations Manager, Malaysia, said that around 150 students, parents and teachers in Kuching met with representatives from higher learning institutions, high schools and polytechnics from New Zealand at the fair.

    These included Riccarton High School, UC International College (UCIC), University of Canterbury, Lincoln University, The Ara Institute of Canterbury, University of Otago, The University of Auckland, University of Waikato, New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and Academic Colleges Group (ACG).

    During the fair, Dr David Warren from the University of Otago gave a lecture on the relevance of chemistry today to teach students how best to study and excel in the subject.
