  • Threads of Heritage exhibition highlights enduring New Zealand-India creative partnership

Auckland‑based design school Whitecliffe recently hosted Threads of Heritage, a vibrant exhibition celebrating global collaboration between Whitecliffe and India’s National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

The exhibition showcased student work inspired by India’s rich textile traditions, developed through an intensive academic collaboration supported by the Indian Ministry of Textiles. Through hands‑on learning with visiting NIFT academics and master artisans, students explored sustainable craft practices while translating cultural heritage into contemporary design outcomes.

Speaking at the exhibition, Whitecliffe Chief Executive Officer Dr Fay Amaral highlighted the value of international collaboration in creative education.

“Threads of Heritage reflects the very best of what creative education can achieve when students are supported by strong academic leadership and a deeply committed professional team,” Fay said.

“The exhibition speaks to the confidence, curiosity, and cultural intelligence of our students, and to the power of international collaboration in shaping designers who are both globally aware and creatively courageous.”

Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) Group General Manager International and Sector Engagement, Sahinde Pala said the partnership between Whitecliffe and NIFT is a great example of how sustained connections deliver meaningful outcomes over time.

“Whitecliffe’s long‑standing relationship with NIFT shows what’s possible when institutions invest in partnerships and people get to know each other over many years. These collaborations aren’t just about programmes, they’re about sharing cultures, learning from one another, and building trust. That’s what really strengthens New Zealand’s global relationships.”

The partnership continues to build momentum, with Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia students set to travel to India in June to visit NIFT, further strengthening two‑way academic exchange between New Zealand and India.

  • NZIEC 2017 reaches new heights

“Congratulations on a world class conference!! It was amazing and very well executed!”

“Much better compared to other international education conferences around the world I’ve been to.”

“Fantastic organisation. Really must congratulate all that put the event together. Great choice for keynote and other speakers. Smaller breakaway sessions with plenty of interesting topics. Great food and the jazz bar really allowed for good networking opportunities. Best NZIEC by a country mile.”

These are just some of the comments flooding into our inboxes following the largest conference we’ve ever run – and one of the largest of its kind in New Zealand.

Not only did we manage to garner record media coverage, we debated the Aussies, tried to avoid the Kraken of Doom, became New Zealand's top trending topic on Twitter, and even had a visit by the Royal Family!

Master of ceremonies, award-winning journalist Miriama Kamo, kept conference moving with humour and poise. A range of keynote speakers inspired, debated and informed, and a record number of breakout sessions provided new insights for improving the student experience, making a mark overseas, collaborating to win – and more.

NZIEC Country of Honour host, U.S. Ambassador Scott Brown, spoke movingly of his childhood and the impact his teachers had on his life trajectory. And delegates took up the plentiful networking opportunities with gusto – many a korero was observed in the conference environs!

  • Chinese and Kiwi students team up for tech innovation

Twenty six secondary school students from Sichuan Province, China, and 15 students from Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School participated in the Canterbury Sichuan Innovation & Technology Youth Summit, held in the city’s Innovation Precinct earlier this month.

Christchurch Educated partnered with the Ministry of Awesome to deliver the five-day programme that included workshops on teamwork and pitching, visits to central city innovation zones and talks from young, local entrepreneurs.

The students worked in teams to develop a tech solution for a problem they identified relating to food, language and culture, transport or city. Solutions included a ‘smart’ rubbish disposal system for dirty cities, an app that uses music to teach new languages, and augmented reality glasses that allow users to interact with people from another country and practise communicating before they visit.

On the final day, participants pitched their solution to a panel of experts from the tech industry who awarded prizes for the most innovative solution, best teamwork and best pitch.

One of the judges, Helen Shorthouse, Technology Sector Leader, ChristchurchNZ, said by working in teams the students had quickly developed cross-cultural understanding.

“It was really impressive the way they took common problems facing both New Zealand and China and developed innovative tech solutions that could be applied in both countries.”

A number of young entrepreneurs from Christchurch start-ups including ShareaCamper, Smish, FluentIQ, EVNEX and the Christchurch City Council’s ‘Are you Alright?’ campaign shared their experiences and helped participants prepare for their pitches.

The event comes out of the Canterbury-Sichuan relationship that has been in development since an MoU was signed with the Sichuan Provincial Government in 2013.

Karen Haigh, ChristchurchNZ Market Project Manager, International Education, said this is the first time the event has been held in Christchurch but there are plans to continue it.

“We foresee the programme being run on an annual basis with Chinese partners, and also offered to other markets such as Korea and Viet Nam.

“We hope it will attract more students with an interest in IT to Christchurch, while showcasing the innovation and tech opportunities here.”

  • Education New Zealand’s Brand Protect our most successful brand campaigns to date

Both campaigns exceeded previous ENZ results and were well above industry standards. These results, alongside the brand tracking research, have affirmed that global appetite for a New Zealand education remains high.

“We have learnt that our message resonates globally with people who are now seeing New Zealand in a whole new light,” ENZ Director Brand, Clayton Foster, says.

The second brand protect campaign – also known as Brand Protect 2.0 – ran from November to December 2020. It targeted the UK, Vietnam and Indonesia, and utilised the same video as the first campaign.

Brand Protect 2.0 reached 47 million people and achieved a high view through rate of 33.79 percent – or one in three viewers watched the video to a meaningful extent. The overall engagement rate was also high at 29.42 percent.

The first global brand campaign ran from July to August 2020. For a modest investment of $190,000 in Germany, Indonesia and Brazil, this campaign reached more than 30 million people across the three key markets and achieved an engagement rate of 22.35 percent. One in four people who came across this campaign watched the video to a meaningful extent.

The Brand Protect campaigns are a key part of the Recovery Plan’s third workstream, ‘Transforming to a more sustainable future state’. They leverage the positive global sentiment towards New Zealand to keep the dream of a New Zealand education alive in-market.
