APAIE: International education critical for Asia’s diplomacy, ambitions
International education in Asia Pacific has been a critical diplomacy tool for the region – one that is becoming all the more essential given the tempestuous global political landscape. Fostering a global outlook among students and facilitating people-to-people exchange is crucial, and international education can achieve what politicians are unable to, building positive relations between people and even countries, where relations are poor.

Push for foreign students to stay on to work in Japan
It is now a top priority that international students attending Japanese universities stay on in the country, with the government offering new incentives such as subsidised company internships, help with finding jobs on graduation, stepped-up Japanese language courses and more streamlined processes for work visas after graduation.
GERMANY
Germany is 'best country for international students', above UK
When students think about studying in a foreign country, their destination of choice tends to be either the United Kingdom or the United States, but a new study argues that Germany is now the best option for international students in Europe. The study ranked 30 European countries according to education, costs, life and career. Germany came on top with a total score of 83.2 out of 100 – far ahead of the UK, which scored 69.8.

Canada, Australia woo international students
Canada and Australia have goals to attract more international students to their universities, with policies that include more relaxed visa procedures, work rules and paths to citizenship. Given the current unsettled political climate in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are emerging as attractive education destinations for prospective international students.
CHINA
China sees 11% growth of international student enrolments
The number of international students in China continues to climb, reaching 442,773 last year, and putting it on track to reach its target of hosting half a million international students by 2020. Korea was the top source country, sending just under 16% of all international enrolments. The US, accounting for 5.4% of all students, was the second-highest sending country, followed closely by Thailand.

International students are work-ready for the summer
The seminar was hosted by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and the Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA), and targeted international students who have completed, or are studying towards, a Level 7 qualification and above.
Most of the attendees were Massey University PhD and Masters students from a range of fields, as well as UCOL students of graphic design, cookery, operations and project management, ICT, furniture design and science.
Judy Bennett-Smith, CEDA International Education Development Manager said the free seminar was the first in a series to be held locally, with the next one aiming to connect potential employers with skilled international tertiary students.
The seminar covered study-to-work visa pathway information and advice, tips on how to navigate the job market, how to present oneself to employers, information about New Zealand employment rights and even invited a former international student to share their experience.
Philip Hastings, Relationship Manager at MBIE said the seminar was a great opportunity for students to talk directly with INZ representative about their work options.
“With the increase in international tertiary students in New Zealand, it is important they have an understanding of the pathways to meeting post-study work visa and residency requirements,” Mr Hastings said.
“Together with CEDA we aim to facilitate a series of study-to-work seminars in the Central North Island that are aligned with regional work shortages.”

Japan-New Zealand education ties strengthen with growing collaboration
Signed on 28 June, ENZ’s memorandum of understanding with Waseda University and its affiliate schools will be influential in developing international education exchanges that benefit institutions in Japan and New Zealand at school and tertiary level.
Under the MOU, the first cohort of 12 students from Waseda Jitsugyo School will visit New Zealand schools in mid-July. This will be followed by an ENZ and Air New Zealand-led familiarisation visit to New Zealand schools involving 10 schoolteachers from Japan, including a Waseda University staff member in charge of overseas programmes for its affiliate schools.
ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, Misa Kitaoka, said the MOU is a significant one as it helps develop a strong relationship between a prestigious Japanese university, its affiliate schools and New Zealand schools.
“By partnering with one of the top universities in the world, the MOU will not only promote student mobility from Japan but also boost New Zealand’s reputation and credibility in Japan,” Misa said.
“We are keen to replicate this strategic partnership with universities and affiliate schools in Japan’s regions.”
It was also fitting to see this MOU achieved in the lead up to NZIEC 2019 where Japan will feature as Country of Honour, Misa said.
“With the Rugby World Cup about to be held in Asia for the first time in the tournament’s history, it is fantastic to see Japan feature as the Country of Honour at NZIEC.”
The Country of Honour designation celebrates and showcases New Zealand’s international education connections with partner countries. Japan is New Zealand’s third-largest source country with more than 10,000 Japanese students enrolled here every year.
“We look forward to sharing the latest Japan market updates and opportunities with NZIEC delegates in three sessions involving guest speakers from Japan, whose unique insights will present new opportunities for partnerships and collaboration.”
Attendees will learn more about doing business with Japan, what the protocols are and the expectations of Japanese agents, education providers and government agencies. These insights will provide delegates with an overview of Japan’s internationalisation agenda and how it could be relevant to their international relations and marketing.
The conference dinner will celebrate Japan’s fascinating culture. Japanese Ambassador, His Excellency Hiroyasu Kobayashi, will be guest of honour.

Alumni gather in Tokyo for the launch of NZACJ
ENZ celebrated the launch with a reception in Tokyo, joined by nearly 100 NZACJ members as well as Ambassador Stephen Payton.

ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, Misa Kitaoka, and NZACJ’s Executive Director, Tomoyuki Amano, outlined ways members can support local education fairs, and give career counselling and guidance on university admissions for high school students.
Misa was pleased with the turnout and level of interest and support from the members.
“It was a fantastic occasion to connect former students of New Zealand and Kiwi residents of Japan, who share the same passion for promoting New Zealand as a study destination,” said Misa.
“Some of our guests travelled from Fukuoka, Osaka and Sendai to attend the reception and I was very inspired by their enthusiasm.”
Ambassador Peyton acknowledged the Japanese and Kiwi guests in the room, including members of the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Kea, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) programme and the Prime Minister’s Scholars for Asia, for their contribution in promoting New Zealand in Japan.

Misa said the highlight of the evening was keynote speaker Sotaro Kawada, who received the dux award at Garin College in 2016 despite speaking very little English when he moved to Nelson five years ago. He will start a Bachelor’s degree in business at University of Edinburgh in September.
“Sotaro emphasised the opportunities and assistance he received at Garin College, which gave him the self-confidence to achieve his academic and personal goals,” said Misa.
“We had a videographer film the event and look forward to sharing these inspiring alumni stories soon.”

ENZ launches digital Media Centre
ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the ENZ Media Centre will act as an entry point for international and New Zealand media to spark their interest and improve their understanding of the richness and breadth of New Zealand’s international education offering.
The Media Centre will start small but grow over time – helped by contributions from education providers. Their stories will range from profiles of their world-leading research and academics to innovative teaching programmes and unique courses.
“Each year, New Zealand attracts some 125,000 international students to our shores for the education experience of a lifetime. But the excellence, quality and diversity of these experiences is not widely understood.
“Through the Media Centre, we hope to broaden the discussions about what international education in New Zealand covers. For example, in addition to stories profiling international students in New Zealand, we will also share news about New Zealanders studying and interning offshore and the success of New Zealand education exports on the world stage.”
The content and design of the Media Centre is a result of consultation with ENZ’s international staff and PR agencies as well as discussion with education providers, regional economic development agencies and peak bodies. All content – written stories, listicles, think pieces, infographics and photography – is free to use.
“Telling the story about international education in New Zealand is an important part of ENZ's work. Last year, we worked with marketing and communication agencies in nine markets to generate more than 2,000 pieces of coverage. The Media Centre will support these efforts and help to lift the quality and quantity of coverage, including more up-to-date stories direct from our education providers,” said Grant.
