  • Swedish students experience New Zealand at ACG

    ACG has partnered with a number of private Swedish high schools as part of a sister-school project, which saw a group of Swedish students and teachers land in Auckland in mid-February for a New Zealand study experience.

    The Swedish students are from the Swedish IT High Schools in Helsingborg, Gotheborg and Uppsala. During their three weeks in Auckland, the students have divided their time between ACG Senior College and ACG Yoobee School of Design – exploring practical study and pathway opportunities.

    As well as experiencing the daily life of an Auckland student, the Swedes have also enjoyed a variety of activities, including day trips to Waiheke Island and Tiri Tiri Matangi Island.

    Evelina Friman, from Gothenburg has enjoyed her experience, and said she would definitely recommend New Zealand to other students.

    “The city, diversity and people are amazing. The teachers and the schools that we attended were great as well. The locals are very friendly and make you feel like part of the community.”

    “I enjoyed ACG Yoobee School of Design the most – to have the opportunity to film in such beautiful nature is a blessing.”

    Each year through a programme called Atlas, the Swedish government provides funding to high schools looking to establish international links with schools from around the world.

    ACG’s Director of Marketing, International, Kim Harase, half Swedish herself, was quick to respond.

    “For ACG, this is a great opportunity to develop an exchange with like-minded students and teachers from a country that shares many values with New Zealand, including a love of nature, respect for individuality and a commitment to interaction with the world,” said Kim.

    Last year, ACG invited a group of Swedish teachers to Auckland and together developed the project to send the first Swedish students to ACG. Further visits from Swedish teachers and principals in 2016 saw interest grow in New Zealand as a study destination.

    Olga Elli, ENZ’s Education Marketing Manager – Europe, said teachers and students in Sweden know New Zealand for its quality education system and lifestyle balance.

    “Many Europeans view New Zealand as a place to learn both in and out of the classroom. The ‘adventure’ of study in New Zealand is what drives many Scandinavians to come here,” said Olga.

    The students will head back to Sweden at the end of this week, but ACG is already planning to reunite them with their new Kiwi friends.

    “The long-term plan is for New Zealand students and teachers to go to Sweden as part of a genuine two-way exchange,” said Kim.

    “We are delighted with the experience and look forward to further expand the collaboration.”

  • Palmerston North’s education connections with Viet Nam

    The MoA signing is the latest development in the education relationship between Palmerston North and Ho Chi Minh City – an earlier agreement signed in 2014 had expired in 2019. Unlike the 2014 agreement, which only included a few education providers in Palmerston North, the renewed MoA captures a much broader range of institutions, from schools to tertiary providers.  

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao had helped to sustain this relationship in 2020, through the NZ Global Competence Certificate initiative. The Central Economic Development Agency and the Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) teamed up with ENZ to offer scholarships for 50 secondary school students in Manawatū and Ho Chi Minh City to increase their global competency – read more here. 

    The new MoA was signed by Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith on behalf of PNCC and Deputy Director from Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Education and Training, Duong Tri Dung. It was witnessed by Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Van Trung, New Zealand Ambassador Tredene Dobson, and representatives of ENZ. 

    “Education arrangements like this help to further strengthen these ties. Building on sustained and increasing interest from New Zealand education providers to engage with institutional counterparts in Ho Chi Minh City, this will open a new chapter for collaboration and success for the respective cities,” Ms Dobson said.  

  • Regional Partners’ workshop a triumph

    In August, Ms Favaloro joined an Education New Zealand regional partners’ workshop to lead sessions on pathways, stakeholder engagement and the art of visual storytelling.

    The 15 regional education organisations represented shared their insights, learned about regional education trends and heard about Study Melbourne’s initiatives and success.

    “It was absolutely inspirational to spend time with Jane. She really gave me a sense of what we should be aspiring to and how we might get there,” said Bree Loverich, Programme Manager for Canterbury Leadership Accord and Christchurch Educated.

    Study Melbourne was established in 2006. For over 10 years, international education has been Victoria's largest services export industry, generating more than $46 billion for the economy. Victoria is now considered Australia’s designated ‘Education State’ with over 175,000 students studying there annually.

    Greg Scott, Regional Programme Manager for ENZ, believes there are many reasons for providers to connect with their regional education organisations, chief among them:

    1. Regional growth offers real benefits for education providers, regional economies, communities and students.

    2. Education providers can grow their international programme by sharing regional marketing economies of scale, and gaining greater access in international markets using regional partnerships.

    3. Regions offer distinctive opportunities for students to align their learning to employment opportunities and pathways to skilled residency.

    "It was a pleasure to spend time learning how teams can convert a 'barrier' into an 'opportunity' when put into a room for a day and encouraged to engage,” said Jane Favaloro about the workshop.

    “I look forward to hearing of the successes and, in the not so distant future, creating a superior student experience that targets specific international markets and enables mobility between Victoria and New Zealand."

  • Cohort 4 students arriving

    Andy Walker, Business Development Manager at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao, says the nomination process for Cohort 4 has now closed. 

    “We recently made a final reallocation of unused places to providers from across the sector, who had demonstrated they have travel-ready students.  

    “Students whose nominations have been confirmed are encouraged to submit their Request for Travel application to Immigration New Zealand as soon as possible. Immigration New Zealand have advised that as at 21 June, 4,709 RFTs had been approved and 1,862 student visa applications granted. 

    “We’ve worked very closely with the Ministry of Education and collaborated with Immigration New Zealand throughout this process. We have particularly valued the partnership with education providers across the sector to successfully implement the cohort,” Andy says. 

    “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to bring back these international students sooner than would otherwise have been possible. International students bring a wealth of social, cultural and economic benefits, and we’re all looking forward to welcoming them back to New Zealand.”

  • Consultation to further strengthen the Code of Practice

    The consultation is part of efforts to continue supporting education providers to deliver quality education to international students.

    The Code requires all schools and tertiary providers enrolling international students to take all reasonable steps to protect international students and provide a positive experience that supports their educational achievement.

    Since the new Code of Practice took effect on 1 July 2016, some Code signatories and sector bodies have provided feedback on certain matters.

    The Ministry wants to hear from schools, tertiary organisations, sector peak bodies and international students and their families on these issues and possible ways to address them.

    Consultation will end on 29 August. All submissions will be reviewed and recommendations made to improve the Code.

    New ingoa Māori  

    This year, to celebrate its 29th birthday, NZIEC was gifted a new ingoa Māori (te reo Māori name): NZIEC KI TUA. The name was inspired by the following whakataukī:  

    He rā ki tua.  

    Look positively toward the future,  Better times are coming.  

    Ki Tua is not about returning to the ‘status quo’. It’s about reconnecting to the world, finding a fresh perspective, and taking a new approach.

    “The adoption of NZIEC KI TUA reflects our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Maihi Karauna, the Crown’s Strategy for Māori Language Revitalisation,” Mr McPherson says.

    “NZIEC’s new name also reflects Aotearoa New Zealand’s distinct cultural identity and the importance of continuing to develop our sector’s annual conference.”

    Conference highlights 

    Recognising the challenge facing the international education sector, the conference explored the theme of Towards Recovery: Reflect, Reconnect and Renew. 

    The programme started by reflecting on the sector’s pandemic experience, including moving reflections from international students and international education practitioners. Delegates explored student experience through the pandemic.

    The programme then shifted to reconnecting with the world. Delegates heard from Minister of Education, Hon Chris Hipkins, and New Zealand’s leading trade negotiator, Vangelis Vitalis. 

    Mid-week we turned our attention to renewal, and how our industry can seize the big opportunities and overcome the big challenges it faces. We explored the intersection of te ao Māori and international education, how we can develop global citizenship, approaches to innovation and diversification, and tackling the climate challenge.
