  • Summer in NZ

    The student retention workstream, a key focus of the Government’s Recovery Plan for international education, has delivered new resources, partnerships and online activity to support international students (and providers) over summer.

    Alongside the Summer in NZ initiative, ENZ has been facilitating Instagram Live sessions on social media focused on the themes of wellbeing, employability, skill development and keeping students connected with one-another. For the schedule, visit the Summer in NZ page on the ENZ website, and watch on the StudyinNewZealand Instagram account (@studyinnewzealand). Further sessions will continue over summer.

    A Tencent livestream with the theme of how to spend your summer in New Zealand was hosted by students on the NauMai NZ WeChat mini programme. Another two upcoming livestreams in the new year will feature how Chinese students are spending their summer and celebrating Chinese New Year in New Zealand.

    ENZ has also partnered with LinkedIn and secured a number of LinkedIn Learning licences. We are now offering these to international students, via providers, free of charge to use over the summer period. This platform is used by education providers across the world to complement their existing courses.

    ENZ has also been working with AFS New Zealand to deliver the Global Competence Certificate. The first course facilitated by Massey University began at the end of November.     New NauMai NZ pages, developed in conjunction with providers and regional networks, have been added to NauMai NZ (under Summer in NZ), providing advice and information on activities and opportunities to engage and connect students over summer. Students whose programmes are finishing this year are also being encouraged to consider further programmes of study in New Zealand.

    The Your Great Kiwi Summer Fair was held at the end of October. The audience was highly engaged, with initial feedback reporting that the fair was a useful source of information. Feedback will help inform future events with international students in New Zealand.

    Since the fair, Northland Inc and Study Auckland have launched BeKiwi, a one-stop digital platform for international students looking for travel and volunteering experiences in the Northland and Auckland regions.

    We understand this summer will be a very different one for many international students.   • Allocation priorities for student visa applications

    Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has changed the way they allocate international student visa applications from students in New Zealand, so they have more flexibility and can process these applications more efficiently during the summer processing peak.  

    INZ’s allocation priorities change from time to time to reflect current demands and will be posted on their website. You can view these allocation priorities here 

    Tuition fee receipt reminder 

    When a student is in New Zealand (onshore) and submits an application for a student visa, it is a requirement to provide a tuition fee receipt with the application at the time of submission. 

    The approval in principle process is not available for students who are in New Zealand. Any onshore application should include evidence a student: 

    - has paid their tuition fees in full for one year or one programme (whichever is shorter); or 

    - that they are exempt from paying tuition fees and their education provider has confirmed this. 

    If the receipt is not provided with the application, then it has an impact on the processing and the application takes longer to be processed. For more information, you can find INZ's Student visa application information sheet for continuing international students here.

  • INZ student visa update: August 2024

    Post Study Work Visa – cross crediting study from post graduate diploma to masters 

    Provided eligibility is met, most level 8 post graduate diplomas will be eligible for a one year post study work visa (PSWV) with masters graduates eligible for a three year post study work visa. 

    In order to be eligible for a PSWV, post graduate diploma (level 8) and masters qualifications (level 9) require a minimum of 30 weeks full time study in the specific programme/qualification being presented for a PSWV

    Students must have held a student visa for that programme/qualification and apply for their PSWV within three months of the expiry date of the student visa for qualification they are presenting to INZ.

    Recently some students completed post graduate diplomas (PG dip) and cross credited directly into a taught masters. In these cases, the students did not undertake full time study in the masters for a minimum of 30 weeks full time in New Zealand, due to the cross credited PG Dip.

    This resulted in issues for the graduates when they applied for their PSWV. INZ is working directly with affected students and exploring options for them. However, it is important for agents and education providers to understand the PSWV rules.

    Eligibility for Post Study Work Visas following study at level 8 and 9 are: 

    • a minimum of 30 weeks full time study in that specific qualification, 
    • hold/held a student visa for that specific qualification, and
    • apply for their post study work visa within three months of the student visa expiry for that specific qualification.

    Although the initial coursework of a masters might be similar to, or the same as a post graduate diploma, the two programmes have different entry criteria and are recognised as separate qualifications. For students who want to cross credit their PG Dip to a masters and undertake some extra study in order to gain a three year PSWV for that masters, the student would need to have studied the masters itself full time for at least 30 weeks. 

    Note: Study weeks include exam preparation time, but exclude holiday periods and time spent repeating failed components.

    Student visa peak – apply three months before intended travel

    The processing of international student visas is a key focus for INZ, particularly as we get closer to the end of the year.

    We are now coming into the period in which INZ receives the highest volumes of applications.

    As soon as they have all the documents they need to apply for their visa, students should submit their application three months before their intended travel date to give them the best chance of having their application decided in time. They can apply earlier than three months if they wish, as long as they have all the required information and documents.

    New fees and levies for visas come into effect from 1 October 2024

    Earlier this month, the Government announced that the cost of applying for all visas will increase on 1 October 2024. 

    Until now, the immigration system has been heavily subsidised by taxpayers.

    The new fees have been set at a rate to recover the costs of assessing and processing each visa type and more accurately reflect the total service surrounding the immigration system.

    Student visa fees increase from $375 to $750. The post study work visa fee increases from $700 to $1670.

    Student visa fees differ depending on where the student applies from so be sure to check the new fees and levies here.

    It is also important to note that New Zealand does have agreements with some countries where student visa fees are waived, and these remain. You can find information here.

    INZ is receiving questions from the education sector on whether students can apply for visas now at the lower fee, and upload documents later once they are ready. 

    Applications received before 1 October 2024 will be charged the current fee, however if the applications are not ready for assessment because they are missing documents then this will result in delays or disappointment for the student. 

    INZ will not be contacting applicants if documents are missing from the application and, if the missing information is key to the assessment, then the applications may be declined.

  • Wellington honours international student success

    The annual event, hosted by economic development agency WellingtonNZ, recognises the contributions international students make to the region through their academic, creative, sporting, community and online pursuits.

    The awards also celebrate local students who support their international peers, international graduates and locals who give international students opportunities in the workplace.

    Wellington mayor Andy Foster presented awards to 18 international students and graduates from tertiary institutions and high schools in the region.

    Victoria University of Wellington doctoral student Thoa Thi Thu Hoang, from Vietnam, won an academic excellence award for her dissertation, which produced a method for prioritising buildings in the city for seismic retrofit and analysed the residential red zone programme in Christchurch.

    Ehsan Hazaveh of Iran took out a creativity award for his doctoral research at Victoria University of Wellington on using photography to tell the stories of refugees in Wellington. One of Ehsan’s solo exhibitions was opened by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, while another was part of the World Refugee Day Festival.

    Malaysian student Nurul Izzati – who plays basketball, netball, frisbee, futsal, athletics and korfball – took out a sports award. She has represented Victoria University of Wellington in ultimate frisbee and korfball and won gold in the 100 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay events in a Malaysian sports tournament, where she was named sportswoman of the year.

    Wellington Girls’ College student Jasmine Yip, from Hong Kong, was recognised for her contribution to the community as an international student representative, Student Volunteer Army ambassador, charity volunteer and climate change activist.

    Giam Li Heng Ronel was recognised for completing his university entrance programme with UP Education online from Singapore due to border restrictions and mentoring other students along the way.

    The event at The Opera House in Wellington on 9 November 2021 also drew a virtual audience of more than 200 others from 37 cities in 13 countries around the world.

    Education New Zealand congratulates all the winners on their outstanding achievements.

  • A word from the Minister

    It has been, and continues to be, an extremely challenging time for many of New Zealand’s universities, schools, polytechnics and institutes of technology, as well as private providers and English language schools with our border closed.

    But I think we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I anticipate we will have a further 12-18 months of disruption before we see a future where much of that will start to fade. The recent news of promising vaccines against COVID-19 is very encouraging. It’s difficult to share an exact timeline with you all as we need to consider vaccination around the rest of the world and international supply chains.

    Over the next 12 months, I expect to see a series of progressive changes. That could look like a risk tolerance map of the world for countries that we have safe travel zones with, or for countries we have lower isolation requirements for when they arrive, for example.

    While we are looking to move as quickly as possible on the border, it is very unlikely that there will be one magic day where we cut a ribbon at the airport and all travellers will be welcomed in.

    We have made a start and granted an exemption for a cohort of 250 postgraduate (largely PhD) students to enter New Zealand from early next year to continue their study. And we’ll consider further cohorts in the future, based on capacity.

    This government will continue to support the sector through our Recovery Plan for international education.

    The recent New Zealand Global Pathways initiative that New Zealand universities, ENZ and NCUK have entered into is a very welcome development. It’s the first time that ENZ and all the universities have been involved in such a partnership. It’s encouraging and it’s the sort of innovation that we are looking for during this period of difficulty.

    International education has been good for New Zealand – not just economically, but culturally and socially too. I look forward to waving the flag for New Zealand internationally and at home too. New Zealand has such an incredible, high-value education to offer to the rest of the world.
