New Zealand Global Competence Certificate Named Finalist for Two PIEoneer Awards
The PIEoneer Awards recognise innovation and achievement in global education each year. The New Zealand Global Competence Certificate is a finalist in two categories:
- Public / private partnership of the year
- Progressive education delivery award.
A model for delivering global competence education virtually and at scale
ENZ, AFS, and Massey University joined forces to deliver global competence education virtually, at a time when students were unable to travel and schools were unable to host international visitors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Global Competence Certificate was ideal in this situation, as it develops self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, cross-cultural communication and flexibility—global skills essential to live, work, and make a real impact around the world.
ENZ provided full scholarships to increase access; AFS developed a customised version of their Global Competence Certificate and trained a cadre of qualified facilitators in New Zealand; and Massey educators delivered the New Zealand programme so participants got a taste of the New Zealand teaching style.
1,000 learners in 13 countries reached
Mixed classes with learners from different countries, provided a rich cultural experience and a chance to connect with peers offshore in a virtual exchange, despite travel restrictions.
The nearly 1,000 students and teachers in New Zealand and 13 other countries developed global competence skills they described as “life-changing” and “the best thing in the pandemic.” Ninety-eight percent of the programme attendees said they were ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with the Global Competence Certificate, and 95 percent rated their experience as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good.’
Thanks to the overwhelming success of this programme, the partnership will continue as borders reopen and international travel is back on the agenda, with more than 400 learners benefitting from the New Zealand Global Competence Certificate in 2022.
Supporting a nationwide international education strategy
This collaborative project directly supports the Government’s International Education Strategy and helps students and teachers develop their cross-cultural skills together with their global peers.
“As well as helping to develop the global citizens of tomorrow, this programme demonstrates the reciprocal benefits of international education, giving our rangatahi a chance to learn with high school students from around the world, and giving their offshore peers a chance to learn ‘with’ New Zealand and our unique way of thinking,” says Grant McPherson, ENZ Chief Executive.
“Interacting and communicating effectively with people around the world is an important skill. Massey University’s significant experience teaching online, utilising the excellent customised content from AFS and the ongoing support of ENZ, provides a great opportunity for students to gain the knowledge and capabilities they need to live, work and learn in a connected world,” says Tere McGonagle-Daly, Students and Global Engagement, Massey University.
The award-winning Global Competence Certificate, developed by AFS Intercultural Programs, is used far beyond New Zealand. As of 2022, it’s used in more than 60 countries with 15,000 learners of different ages and backgrounds.
“Educating more young people to become global citizens is mission-critical for our world. At AFS we are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to intercultural learning and can gain skills such as cross-cultural communication, empathy, and conflict resolution to effectively bridge differences,” concludes Daniel Obst, President and CEO of AFS Intercultural Programs.

Graduation for Girls in Tech Indonesia Scholarship recipients
Selected from applicants from more than 50 universities across Indonesia, the women received training in either product management or data analytics, supported by mentoring sessions, before presenting their final projects in TECHTalk series to the public.
Internships are next on the agenda, as the scholarship recipients are entitled to internship opportunities at Qasir, an Indonesia-based point of sales start-up.
ENZ worked with Girls in Tech Indonesia to deliver the programme, as well as with Code Avengers, a Hamilton-based EdTech company focussed on digital learning, and with Indonesia-based training provider, Remote Skills Academy.
ENZ Regional Director for Asia Ben Burrowes says there are always new things to learn in the world of technology.
“Our goal is to build international relationships and we can achieve this by promoting New Zealand’s education products and services. Through this particular initiative we are also supporting more women to take the leap into technology or continue to develop their tech career.”
Code Avengers Head of Australasian Distribution Steve Budd says digital literacy is becoming more and more important in the global job market.
“Being able to provide an opportunity for these remarkable students to kick-start their careers is a great honour.”

BizVenture Japan back for 2022 with new partner onboard
This year will see 30 students from New Zealand and 20 from Japan come together in person and online from 29-31 July, to solve real-life business challenges. Students will develop and pitch solutions for Cookie Time, a New Zealand business that has been exporting to Japan since 2016.
After the successful pilot event last year, BizVenture collaborators have bigger plans for 2022. Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Director of Education – Japan, is looking forward to hosting the Japanese team and Cookie Time Japan at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo for the business challenge pitches.
“We are delighted to welcome Cookie Time Japan to BizVenture 2022 as a corporate partner. Cookie Time Japan is an ideal partner in this project. While embracing the Kiwi entrepreneurial spirit, the company has done an amazing job developing products which cater to local demands and preferences, particularly in the youth market.”
Last year’s BizVenture collaboration saw the students exposed to business and culture in both countries during a weekend of interactive workshops with New Zealand and Japanese guest speakers, cultural mentors and language coaches, in preparation for their pitches.
Ian Kennedy was a judge at BizVenture Japan 2021 and is the Chair of the New Zealand Committee on the Japan New Zealand Business Council, a role that brought him back to Japan in April during the Prime Minister’s visit. He is looking forward to the next iteration of the programme with the 2022 participants.
“Technology is a wonderful thing, but the chance to meet people in person was gold after two years of online communication working through a screen. I look forward to being a judge and sharing my recent experience in Japan business exchanges with the BizVenture participants, so they can learn more about doing business with Japan.”
Applications for New Zealand students to participate closed on 13 May and selection will be completed by the end of May. The 30 New Zealand students are being selected from the nearly 4700 students participating in The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme.
Funding is provided for New Zealand students to travel to Wellington for the weekend business challenge event.
“I felt inspired after seeing the students' business cases, which were commercial, socially minded, and demonstrated thoughtful engagement in each other's cultures. North Asia CAPE is thrilled to work with Young Enterprise, ENZ and Japanese partners again on this important initiative in support of future business leaders in New Zealand and Japan,” says NA CAPE director Charlie Gao.
The programme is designed to continually build on New Zealand’s diplomatic relationship with Japan as travel for international students is starting to resume. The organisers hope this year’s BizVenture will serve as an important show of commitment by New Zealand and Japan to develop global citizens and business-savvy young people, who will be future leaders in the education and business sectors across our two countries.

Review of ENZ Recognised Agency (ENZRA) programme
“Education agencies play a valuable role in promoting a New Zealand education experience to prospective students and supporting them to study here,” says Geneviève Rousseau Cung, Education Agents Manager at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ).
“We need to make sure that the ENZRA programme does the best possible job of supporting our international education sector as it rebuilds.”
ENZ commissioned an external consultancy firm to undertake the three-month project, which started in August. Research is underway and includes targeted consultation with representatives of all key stakeholders including agents, industry, and government agencies.
The consultancy will provide recommendations on our agent engagement strategy, with a particular focus on the ENZRA programme and the agent training programme moving forward. More information on any changes arising from the review will be shared with the sector by early 2023.

Christchurch highlights regional education pathways
Attracting more international students to come to Canterbury for secondary school study and stay on for tertiary studies has been the key focus of a nine-month project by ChristchurchNZ and Christchurch Educated, with support from Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao.
A series of education and career planning resources has been produced for school staff to help guide students along their study pathways. These resources, which are available as web pages, a downloadable pdf, and as printed booklets and activities, host important information and advice about tertiary study, while showcasing the three high-calibre public tertiary institutions in Christchurch. The response has been enthusiastic and International Directors at Canterbury secondary schools say they are already being used successfully to support current international students.
“I used the resources with my Year 11s the other day. It was an outstanding exercise. I used the planner and had them all so focused,” says Colleen Steyn, Director of Middleton Grange School's International College.
Video case studies are another essential marketing component of the study pathway project. The stories feature three young Chinese students talking about their education journeys, and why they love living and studying in Christchurch. All three moved to the city in their mid-teens and discovered the Kiwi lifestyle and culture was the right fit for them.
Caroline Su has discovered a career in construction
Caroline Su spoke little English when she arrived as a 15-year-old, nine years ago, and now she is helping Christchurch grow, through an exciting new role focussed on commercial renovation.
“The construction industry probably wouldn’t have been a possible pathway for me if I had stayed in China. The more self-directed style of learning here let me change my major when I discovered I wanted to be in construction. I wouldn’t have done that in China,” Caroline says.
Stella Liu is loving life and her teaching career in Christchurch
Quan Zhou is studying for an agricultural science degree
Stella Liu followed her passion as an early childhood teacher in Christchurch, while Quan Zhou is in his second year studying towards a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Lincoln University. He is looking forward to starting his career and with Canterbury’s strong agritech sector, Quan is confident this will lead to a wide range of career options.
The project also launched an initiative to further strengthen relationships between tertiary providers Ara Institute of Canterbury, Lincoln University, and the University of Canterbury. Each hosted a familiarisation event for international school staff and included an opportunity to meet with alumni and current students. The well-attended events received positive feedback and were a valuable experience for schools as well as the tertiary providers.
Stefi Porter, International Education Partnership Manager at ChristchurchNZ, says the project has opened doors to new conversations and collaboration between Christchurch Educated providers.
“This project has been a great opportunity to work together as a region to build back up after the challenges of the last two years.”
The project complements the strong Christchurch Educated community and will support the sector to build back collaboratively and more sustainably.

Welcoming Michael Zhang to Team China
Michael brings to the role 10 years of experience as a New Zealand diplomat. Throughout his professional career he has had a strong focus on China and an extensive record of working in the international education market in China. Having served as Acting Consul-General in Guangzhou and Deputy Consul-General in Chengdu, Michael has a deep understanding of the operating context in China.
Combined with his expertise in Chinese language and culture, Michael brings a highly valuable skillset at a critical time for the international education sector, says Lisa Futschek, GM International at ENZ.
“We will be very sorry to farewell Miranda Herbert, who has been with us since June 2019, but it’s exciting to have another highly qualified person for this important role,” Ms Futschek says.
Michael will undertake an induction programme in ENZ’s Wellington office from 5 September 2022 before visiting key international education providers in New Zealand, as well as NZ Inc agencies. He will relocate to Beijing from the end of September, for a three-week handover with Miranda and the ENZ team on the ground.

The virtual format means we have eliminated participation costs and the prospect of Covid blues for all. Join from the comfort of your favourite workstation! And while it means we won’t be able to connect in-person, we are offering a range of new ways to network and connect during conference – stay tuned for further information following registration!
The virtual format means we can offer a wider range of keynote speakers than in our usual two-day in-person format. We hope you’ll enjoy insights from our bumper line-up of ten keynote speakers from a range of industries and perspectives. That’s right, ten!
We’re also able to offer content in a more flexible manner. We’ll be delivering content in bite-sized chunks each morning and afternoon during the week (except for Friday afternoon). Don’t worry if you can’t attend a session – all sessions will be recorded and available to view later if you have registered.
A varied programme
NZIEC 2022’s theme is Towards Recovery: Reflect, Reconnect and Renew. We will be exploring this theme across the conference week; we’ll start by Reflecting on the shared experience we’ve had these past two years, before we focus on Reconnecting New Zealand and then turn to Renewal of our industry for the future.
The full programme will launch shortly, but here’s a taste of what we have in store:
- On Monday morning, join international students and practitioners as we Reflect on our collective experiences over the past two years. Hear from 2021 New Zealander of the Year, Dr Siouxsie Wiles, about her experiences through the pandemic and her advice for the future. Gain insights from our first-ever international student-led panel as they discuss their experiences during the pandemic – and their hopes and expectations for the future. And join our Board Chair, Steve Maharey, as he provides an update on ENZ’s vision and direction.
- On Monday afternoon, learn how providers across Aotearoa worked through the pandemic to enhance international student wellbeing – and what lessons this experience provides for our current offering. Pick and choose from a cornucopia of sessions that explore New Zealand’s commitment to manaakitanga, including advice from the New Zealand International Students’ Association.
- Tuesday sees us shift focus to Reconnect. Join us in the morning for an address from the Minister of Education, Hon Chris Hipkins, when he’ll provide an update on the Government’s strategy for international education. You will have an opportunity to ask questions. After the Minister’s address, get up to speed with updates from a range of New Zealand government agencies.
- On Tuesday afternoon, we continue our Reconnect focus with a keynote address from New Zealand’s leading trade negotiator, Vangelis Vitalis. He’ll speak about New Zealand’s Trade Recovery Strategy and the role of international education within that. Then take a trip ‘Around the World’ with international market insights from ENZ’s global network and sessions led by industry representatives.
- On Wednesday morning, the centrepiece of our conference week, we explore how international education relates to Te Ao Māori. Gain perspectives on traditional Māori knowledge and wisdom from our keynote speaker, Sharlene Maoate-Davis, as she explores Te Māramatanga o te Maramataka – or renewed Rongoā perspectives from traditional Māori knowledge and wisdom. Then learn how Te Tiriti is being implemented in practice across the international education sector.
- On Wednesday afternoon, we turn our attention to global citizenship. A range of industry-led sessions examine the concept and its application. Then be inspired by the journey of Abbas Nazari, who fled Afghanistan as a refugee and found himself aboard the Tampa, before gaining a new home in Aotearoa and eventually travelling to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship. Abbas’ story is a powerful tale of the importance of education – and humanity.
- And as we aim to shrug off mid-week blues, don’t miss the opportunity to find your Inner Superhero! Tapahia Heke and Pita Mei are a Superhero Dream Team who will amaze with their abilities to read – and draw – the Inner Superhero in any of us. Tune into this session if you want your superhero abilities unleashed.
- Thursday sees us in search of Renewal with the morning devoted to exploring innovation and diversification in international education. Join us in the morning as we explore the do’s and don’ts of innovation within the international education sector. Melissa Clark-Reynolds, our Renew Keynote speaker will talk about the innovation game and how to beat your organisation’s immune system.
- On Thursday afternoon, we’ll discuss the challenges and opportunities regarding sustainability and international education. Several industry practitioners will outline the approaches they have embraced to address the sustainability imperative. And René de Monchy will provide insights from the tourism industry that speaks to the challenge of rebuilding while keeping sustainability concerns front of mind.
- Finally, we ease into Friday morning with a late start and an early finish to wrap up our conference week. Grab a cuppa to join a Kōrero Kawhe with some inspiring New Zealand alumni and hear how they are making their way in the world and improving the lives of their communities. Then join clinical psychologist Nigel Latta as he shares the bare essentials for the rebuild job ahead. Finally, don’t miss our conference wrap, including an announcement as to how we’ll be celebrating 30 years of NZIEC in 2023!
