General election comes to NZIEC 2017
Hon Paul Goldsmith, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, and Chris Hipkins, Labour Party Spokesperson for Education, will outline their respective party’s vision for the future of our industry.
Both politicians will speak to the theme of ‘The future of New Zealand’s international education industry’. After their speeches, conference delegates will have an opportunity to ask them questions.
Hon Paul Goldsmith is List Member of Parliament for Epsom. In 2016, Mr Goldsmith was appointed Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Minister of Science and Innovation and Minister for Regulatory Reform.
Chris Hipkins is Member of Parliament for Rimutaka. Ranked number six in the Labour Shadow Cabinet, Mr Hipkins is the party’s Spokesperson for Education (including Tertiary and Early Childhood Education) and Shadow Leader of the House of Representatives.

Dr Jason Fox joins NZIEC

Dr Jason Fox is a self-described “modern day wizard-rogue,” author and leadership adviser, who uses his expertise in motivation design to show leaders how to unlock new ideas and move beyond the status-quo in order to remain relevant.
At NZIEC, Jason will discuss how to ‘Lead an International Education Quest’.
“I'm very much looking forward to joining you at NZIEC this August,” says Jason.
“Nearly everything in the international education industry is changing, and faster than ever before. To build for the future, we need something different. It’s time to lead a quest.”
Sam Mackay, ENZ Strategic Projects Manager says Jason is sure to stimulate some interesting thoughts and discussions over the course of the conference, and will be delivering this year’s opening keynote as well as the closing address.
“This means Jason will be engaging with delegates over the course of the conference, and will be on hand to draw everything together after two days of discussions and debate,” says Sam.
“You won’t want to book an early flight!”
We’ll have more keynote and plenary speaker announcements to make before registrations open in May. NZIEC 2017 will be held at SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland on 22 and 23 August.

Upcoming: New Zealand Education Week in Greater China
ENZ is supporting a New Zealand Education Week in Greater China to strengthen our relationships with stakeholders from various sectors and audiences, including education agencies, Chinese Government partners, education institutions and other stakeholders.
It will feature agent seminars, the Model Vocational Education Symposium, an Early Childhood Education Symposium, alongside networking opportunities throughout the week.
ENZ is currently accepting expressions of interest (EOI) for the Early Childhood Education Symposium. Please share the call for EOIs with relevant colleagues and practitioners. Download the Expression of Interest form - ECE Symposium.
As part of New Zealand Trade & Enterprise’s New Zealand Week, the ENZ team will be hosting a New Zealand Alumni function in Shanghai.

Indian Academic Masterclasses showcase a different side of New Zealand
Each masterclass invites academics and experts in their field to talk on an unusual theme within education, and how New Zealand has a strength in it.
“The academic masterclass series is a programme we’ve done for many years. We’ve had great success boosting the profile of Kiwi academics in India, and showcasing the breadth and depth of New Zealand research,” ENZ Country Manager – India, Jugnu Roy, says.
“This year, we’re very happy to be exploring areas of research to ensure the reputation of New Zealand researchers remains high in India while international travel remains limited.”

A new home for international students
After extensive refurbishment, the Ellen Melville Centre and redesigned Freyberg Place in the heart of the city have re-opened to the public in September 2017.
The combined facility offers an open air public space for relaxing and enjoying the sunshine, as well as an indoor community centre with an exciting new range of programmes and activities – many of them free of charge.
The Auckland Agency Group (AAG), a cross-agency collaboration of central and local government agencies set up to improve international student wellbeing in Auckland, welcomes the new space and format.
Hayley Shields, ENZ’s Director of Student Experience and Chair of AAG, said the location of the new community centre makes it an ideal spot for international students to meet locals and other students.
“An estimated 20,000 international students reside in the CBD and want to be part of the local community.
“The centre will be a great place where international students can converge, meet and make new friends and feel part of the community.”
Formerly known as Pioneer Women’s and Ellen Melville Hall, the new Ellen Melville Centre has five diverse spaces that can be booked for meetings, private functions, exhibitions, films, concerts and performances.
Individuals, and arts, cultural and community groups interested in providing programmes at the centre are encouraged to make contact on this link.
