• ENZ strengthens applied education connections in Viet Nam through targeted engagement

  Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has successfully delivered a targeted engagement programme in Viet Nam for New Zealand’s ITP and PTE sector, supporting providers to build connections, raise profile and position applied education as a strong pathway for Vietnamese students.

  Delivered from 29 March to 5 April 2026, the eight‑day programme spanned four key cities and marked the first sector‑specific, ENZ‑led initiative focused on applied and work‑integrated education in Viet Nam.

  Strengthening sector visibility and connections

  The programme was strategically designed to lift awareness of New Zealand’s applied education offering and to support providers to engage more deeply with the local education system. ENZ led a structured programme of in‑market activity, including:

  • networking sessions with education agents and applied education partners
  • targeted school visits, reaching around 350 students through career‑focused engagement
  • student‑facing outreach activities
  • a country briefing and a high‑level meeting with the Department of Vocational Education under Viet Nam’s Ministry of Education and Training.

  ENZ also worked closely with selected market partners to amplify reach and impact, with partner‑led activity including additional agent meetings, student engagement events and education workshops.

  Strong market response and growing awareness outcomes

  Market response throughout the programme was consistently positive, with strong interest from education agents, schools and students in applied and work‑integrated programmes. Key areas of interest included scholarships, tuition affordability, updated entry requirements for Vietnamese students, and post‑study work opportunities that support longer‑term career outcomes.

  The programme also delivered strong media results that significantly strengthened awareness of New Zealand’s applied education offering and reinforced positive perceptions of its education quality and experience in Viet Nam.

  Building momentum in Viet Nam

  ENZ’s Market Manager – Viet Nam, Van Banh, said the programme is helping build momentum and setting New Zealand’s vocational education sector up for sustainable growth in Viet Nam.

  “The response we have seen in Viet Nam has been very encouraging. Education agents, schools and students are showing strong interest in New Zealand’s applied and work‑integrated education, particularly around scholarships, affordability and clear pathways to employment,” Van said.

  “The strong media coverage from this programme has also helped lift awareness of what New Zealand offers, reinforcing its positive attributes around quality, employability and accessibility. We’re looking forward to building on this through targeted digital activity and local storytelling.”

  Building on this momentum, ENZ will deliver a follow‑up digital campaign featuring local influencers and stories from alumni and current students to further amplify the visibility and impact of New Zealand’s ITP and PTE sectors.

• New Zealand Schools Scholarships 2024 launches in Viet Nam

  This scholarship, launched by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and New Zealand schools, provides a 50% subsidy towards selected Vietnamese middle and high school students currently in grades 8 – 10 in Viet Nam. Applications opened on 22nd January 2024 and close at 11:59pm Indochina Time on 17th March 2024.   

  Interest in studying with New Zealand remains high amongst students and parents in Viet Nam, with recent fairs held in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi receiving between 400-500 attendees respectively.   

  Viet Nam continues to be a priority market for New Zealand schools. Pre-COVID, the sector saw 80 percent growth in students from Viet Nam between 2017 and 2019. Currently, Vietnamese high school students account for 15% of the entire Vietnamese student base here in New Zealand. 

  

  This initiative aims to simultaneously increase interest and enrolments from high quality Vietnamese students into New Zealand schools, whilst also providing support to the students and families themselves by reducing the financial barrier to study overseas.  

  ENZ’s Business Development Manager Mary Camp said the New Zealand School Scholarships initiative has attracted quality students with high grade point average and good English language ability to study in New Zealand.   

  “We are impressed with the calibre of students we have welcomed through this programme. Many of them have had academic success and gone on to study at high-quality universities in NZ.” 

  “Schools are excited to welcome students from Viet Nam and eager for them to experience our quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.  

  Mary added that the support of the Schools in International Education Business Association (SIEBA) has been valuable.  

  “SIEBA supports this programme by undertaking reference checks of interested education agents, thus reducing the burden on schools and helping them connect with new agents. Activating new agents in Viet Nam helps the entire sector”. 

  

  ENZ’s Regional Director – Asia, Ben Burrowes said he was pleased to see the New Zealand Schools Scholarships initiative continue in 2024.  

  “ENZ is absolutely committed to its education relationship with Viet Nam and we’re excited to welcome more scholarship winners this year, enriching our schools, classrooms and communities here in New Zealand.  

  "As the scholarship continues to run each year, it allows new scholarship winners to meet previous scholarship winners and form a community of their own,” said Ben. 

  "Since its initial launch in 2018, the New Zealand School Scholarships initiative in Viet Nam has grown to become a prestigious, top of mind scholarship for local students," he added.  

  The New Zealand School Scholarship initiative is just one of the initiatives that Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao delivers as part of its investments into the Vietnamese – New Zealand relationship. Other initiatives include student fairs, co-funding agent events and engagements, media and PR initiatives as well as supporting institutional partnerships.

  Dinh Minh Thao 
  2023 New Zealand School Scholarship recipient  

  With a strong desire to venture beyond her comfort zone, Dinh Minh Thao courageously applied for and successfully attained the NZSS 2023, starting her educational journey at Newlands College (Wellington, New Zealand) in July 2023. 

  In just six months, she immersed herself in studies, actively participated in various extracurricular activities, and experienced numerous "first in life" experiences including contributing to cultural events and participating in the festival of the Indian community. Notably, she challenged herself by becoming the class representative for the "Year 10 Speech Competition," typically reserved for upper grades, winning the coveted "Public Speaking" trophy.  

  Expressing her gratitude, Minh Thao stated, "Thanks to the NZSS, I have set foot in New Zealand, embarking on a journey towards independence and confidence, thus evolving into a new version of myself. I am eagerly anticipating the exploration of new opportunities that Kiwiland will unfold in 2024."

  Xuan Khang 
  2019 New Zealand School Scholarship recipient  

  Xuan Khang came to Pakuranga College in July 2019 and graduated at the end of 2022. He remained in New Zealand throughout the pandemic, and achieved an outstanding academic record. He passed NCEA Levels 1 to 3 endorsed with Merit or Excellence, gaining Excellence in both Level 3 Calculus and Chemistry. He was involved in the Academic Council, Environmental Council, the Service Council, the Cultural Council and Peer Support. Xuan Khang won Top Academic International Student at senior prize-giving in 2022 and is studying Engineering at the University of Auckland in 2023. 

  "I came to New Zealand to broaden my horizons and become more independent. I have really enjoyed the practical aspects of working in labs and putting theory into practice. By using English daily, I feel my English has improved to a high standard. I have enjoyed being able to discuss my work with my teachers, who have been friendly and helpful. I feel I have really benefitted from the opportunities provided by living in New Zealand and studying at Pakuranga College."

• Appreciating our agents in Viet Nam

  The main purpose was to acknowledge the work of Vietnamese agents and thank them for their commitment. This is part of a programme of work to maintain and build our education brand offshore, ahead of the reopening of student visa processing in October 2022.

  As well as hearing the latest updates from ENZ and other key education speakers, agents took part in a quiz and brainstorm.  This provided some useful market insights into Vietnamese students’ and parents’ demand in a post-Covid world. 

  We were delighted with the positive feedback from agents about the event, including a renewed commitment to promote New Zealand education.  To build on this interest, ENZ is now organising a series of eight workshops themed “The NEW Choices”, to update Vietnamese agents about new programme offerings across sectors. 

  Other projects underway in this market include a sustainability competition and a scholarship bootcamp, in collaboration with ENZ Recognised Agents based in Viet Nam.

• Online education pilot with FutureLearn enters second phase

  A webinar for interested providers on 31 March will be followed by an international campaign from 30 June to end of September 2022.  

  Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao will again partner with FutureLearn, a London-based platform with a global learner base of 17+ million people. The successful first phase saw 22 online courses from New Zealand providers attract more than 80,000 enrolments from learners in over 200 countries, highlighting the potential of online study platforms to reach new global audiences. 

  The focus of this second phase will be on how to convert an online audience into a sustainable commercial proposition for New Zealand-based providers.  

  We are interested in hearing from providers who have online content ready to go, or who are confident they can develop online content quickly. We are looking primarily to include short, taster courses (6-20 hours of learning). There is also scope for short credit-bearing courses, including micro-credentials. 

  This opportunity is open to both registered and non-registered education providers, EdTech companies, regional economic bodies and others. If you have education content and you’re interested in participating, please register for our information webinar on 31 March 2022 to find out more. 

  Participants have told us that the benefits of this initiative included being able to explore online distribution models and understand more about who the online audience is, and how they behave in a learning environment. It also presents an opportunity for providers to test and learn at low cost and with low risk, as well as profiling their brand to a global audience.   

  Online education is part of a programme of work to diversify international education products and services, in line with the New Zealand International Education Strategy 2018-2030. 

  Phase 1 pilot with FutureLearn

  Through the first pilot we confirmed there is demand for online courses from New Zealand providers, willingness by many in the sector to pilot online learning, and that New Zealand courses can attract learners in full-time employment.

  Student visa applications: Missed intakes and next steps

  Some students who applied late for study in 2026 may not have received a visa decision in time for their intended intake. If a student has missed their intake, what happens next depends on when their study can begin.

  If a student can start later in 2026: In some cases, we may be able to approve the application in principle, provided other requirements are met. Any outstanding information will need to be supplied by the date given, and the visa can then be granted once all requirements are satisfied.

  If a student can’t start until 2027: Withdrawing the application and requesting a fee refund is generally the best option. Supporting information can become outdated over time, and personal circumstances (including health) may change. Applications for the 2027 academic year should be submitted around September 2026.

  Working on a student visa

  The ‘Working on a student visa’ page on the Immigration New Zealand website has been updated to clarify the following: Secondary school students who have finished studies, and who have associated work rights, can continue to work part-time for up to 25 hours (or full-time during the Christmas and New Year holiday period) for the remainder of their visa.

  Funds Transfer Scheme now available for Nepal

  As of 2 April 2026, Nepal is now included in the Funds Transfer Scheme (FTS), delivered through ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited.

  The FTS helps reduce the amount of financial documentation students need to provide and gives us greater confidence that students have access to enough funds while in New Zealand. Expanding the scheme to more countries is also expected to support faster processing.

  For most Nepalese students whose applications are approved in principle, use of the FTS will be required.

  Education agent performance data released

  New data is now available showing 2025 student visa application volumes and approval rates for education agents. This information is published annually.

  The data includes education agents who are exempt from licensing and does not include Licensed Immigration Advisers.
