Latin America masterclasses showcase New Zealand education
From 25-26 October 2022, the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao team in Latin America hosted the second edition of the Latin America Masterclasses, an online event that brings Latin American audiences closer to New Zealand universities and showcases the quality of a Kiwi education. There were more than 1700 registrations, and more than 1000 people joined during the six live broadcasts.
Centred around ‘Education for sustainable development’ as the main theme, the event brought together researchers from different subject areas to deliver classes focused on the importance of sustainability for the development of society. Lecturers from Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Waikato, Auckland University of Technology and Lincoln University participated.
The goal of the initiative was to highlight the quality of education in New Zealand, explore key themes in sustainability, and demonstrate how a New Zealand education prepares students for the future. To promote the event, ENZ carried out an extensive communications campaign on social media, press and trade channels, focusing on countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Argentina. The campaign shared key messages about a Kiwi education with thousands of people across Latin America.

Attendees were able to learn why New Zealand education is considered a world leader in promoting independent thinking – through practical and collaborative teaching – with an emphasis on issues such as environmental preservation and sustainable business innovation.
The students also learnt about the concept of kaitiakitanga, which represents taking care of people and place, preserving traditional knowledge for the benefit of future generations.

All classes were broadcast in English, with simultaneous translation into Portuguese and Spanish. Participants were able to chat with ENZ staff and send through their questions for the speakers to answer live.
Following months of preparation for the event, the masterclasses were broadcast on ENZ’s own online platform in Latin America. The site is available to Latin American audiences and features the 2022 and 2021 Masterclasses. There are plans to transform the site in the future, into a permanent hub of events and content on New Zealand education for Latin America audiences.

Funding available to reimagine international education
Registrations of interest are open now for ENZ’s International Education Product Innovation Fund (PIF), closing on Wednesday 4 May 2022. Funding is available to all New Zealand-based organisations and individuals with fresh ideas for international education.
The PIF will support providers of education – whether established, new or emerging – to explore, develop and test pilot projects of new products and services that reimagine international education.
“New” could mean the mode of delivery, the configuration, the learner experience and learner outcomes, or the type of collaboration. The pilot projects developed through the PIF will help explore what could set New Zealand apart from its competitors, how students want to engage with New Zealand education, and how to increase the sector’s resilience to future shocks.
“We are extremely excited to now be receiving registrations of interest for the Product Innovation Fund”, says Euan Howden, ENZ’s Director of Innovation. “By encouraging and enabling the development of new, innovative products and services, we are seeking to position the sector for a more sustainable and resilient future and take advantage of trends such as alternative credentials, life-long learning and flexible learning.”
Underlying the PIF is the principle of tukutuku, or partnership. Each pilot project supported through the PIF will be a partnership based on mutual benefit and reciprocity between ENZ and the provider.
ENZ will offer funding of up to $300,000 per pilot (but is open to considering proposals that seek greater funding), as well as connections, support and credibility. In turn, ENZ is looking for applicants who can show a commitment of resource, a willingness to share lessons, reporting and insights for broader benefit, an openness to new thinking, and willingness to give best effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The PIF is one of ENZ’s initiatives underway to build a sustainable and diverse international education sector for New Zealand which is more resilient to future shocks such as COVID-19. The programme is funded by the Covid Response and Recovery Fund and is linked to the Government’s Strategic Recovery Plan for International Education.
The results of the pilots supported through the PIF will eventually inform recommendations to the Government in September 2023 on future investment in the development and diversification of international education.

Diverse New Zealand experience on show at the symposium on offshore delivery
Dr Rob Griffiths, Programme Director of Occupational and Aviation Medicine at the University of Otago summed up the mood of over 70 participants from across the university, Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITP), Private Training Establishments (PTE) and educational services sector that attended a symposium on offshore delivery organised by Education New Zealand (ENZ) in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington on Thursday 9 June. Senior education professionals shared their experiences - both the good and bad – in delivering education services offshore. Sessions covered quality assurance, sustainable models, collaboration and the power of partnerships, critical success factors and explored a variety of markets from Singapore to Russia, the Middle East to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The future of digital and online learning technologies to transform and disrupt higher education was discussed with examples ranging from early childhood training, software development, and aviation medicine to training in wildlife rescue after an oil spill. ENZ’s General Manager Business Development Clive Jones said that the day “created a network bringing together a diverse group at different stages of development who were keen to stay together”.
One of the keynote speakers on international trends was Boston-based Richard Garrett from The Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, an education think tank with a focus on transnational education (TNE). Garrett was positive about the huge global opportunity and the TNE potential for New Zealand. In particular, the opportunity to learn from the main TNE providing countries - UK and Australia – and take a strategic approach in partnership with destination countries. His view that offshore delivery was like a permanent start up resonated strongly with participants.
“With around 3,500 offshore international student enrolments there is quite a way to go to achieve the target of 10,000 by 2025 set by the Government’s Leadership Statement for International Education. But the diversity of providers, markets and projects showcased at the symposium confirmed that New Zealand has the products, range of capability and interest in moving forward together. ENZ has been challenged to keep the conversation we started in Wellington going” said Adele Bryant, Business Development Manager at ENZ.
