Education New Zealand marks reopening of borders with new global campaign
Denver Colorado, 31 May 2022: Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao at the NAFSA Conference in Denver, Colorado today revealed for the first time a new global marketing campaign emphasising New Zealand’s unique attributes for international students as the country opens for business on 31 July after two years of closed borders.
Central to the campaign are the stories of eight international students from, China, Colombia, Germany, India, Japan, Thailand, USA, and Vietnam. The students share their experience of study and life in New Zealand, and the benefits that result from the weaving together of different cultures in a uniquely New Zealand way.
Education New Zealand invited the eight students to work alongside world-famous Māori fashion designer Kiri Nathan to collaborate on designing a new type of education garment that embodies the cultural values that make a New Zealand education unique: manaakitanga (care of people), kaitiakitanga (care of place), and the pōtiki spirit of youthful energy and finding a better way. The narratives in the campaign are focussed on the students’ experiences and goals, and explore themes such as work and career readiness, sustainability, and innovation through collaboration. It is a campaign authentically rooted in Te Ao Māori values.
“The traditional academic gown worn by students when they graduate is a symbol of achievement, capturing a snapshot in time,” says Ms. Nathan. “Our ‘kākahu’ (garment) symbolises not only this attainment, but most importantly the cultural journey these students have undertaken and will continue throughout their lives. Their experience in New Zealand has changed them, weaving and sharing the values of Te Ao Māori into the unique cultures of their own homeland. The final kākahu designs are a unique collaborative effort, globally-minded and inspiring – just like the students.”
Kiri Nathan is best known for her extensive experience of the modern fashion world infused with her Te Ao Māori roots. She has developed pieces for international figures including Barack Obama, Beyoncé, and the Duchess of Sussex. As a Māori mentor running the Kāhui Collective, she has seen a significant number of NZ Māori fashion designers feature at the NZ Fashion Week, Guangzhou Fashion Week, Hong Kong Fashion Week, and the Fiji fashion week. She also led a delegation to China to meet high level fashion networks and create pathways to market.
More than qualifications
At the core of the campaign is the concept that education with New Zealand is far more than the attainment of academic qualifications.
“What we offer global students is an opportunity to experience something new, different, and ongoing,” says Education New Zealand Chief Executive, Grant McPherson. “It is a new perspective that redefines success in global education beyond degrees and academic achievement and builds greater understanding of the value of continuous learning throughout life.”
“When you study with New Zealand, you’re invited to bring your whole self. You will benefit from New Zealand’s cultural values as well as our high-quality education that embodies innovation, practical learning, and preparing you for the future.”
“But we also know New Zealand benefits too. We want students to bring their stories, their culture, and their perspectives so that we can learn from each other and build a future that is connected, strong and adaptable.”
Across the eight kākahu three sustainable textile options have been used in their manufacture – upcycled commercial linen, sustainable wool from New Zealand mills, and deadstock from fabric wholesalers.
The campaign was launched as part of Education New Zealand’s participation at the NASFA 2022, the world’s largest international education conference and Expo in Denver, Colorado. The campaign will roll out across New Zealand’s key partner countries from June 2, 2022 and runs for 12 weeks initially.

Hanbo Wang (Kevin), from China, studying Viticulture and Wine Science at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hawke's Bay.
Octavius Jones, from the United States of America, a PhD student in the Te Kawa a Māui department at Victoria University of Wellington. Octavius is studying digital storytelling, African and Māori studies.
Tiara Das, from India, studying Science - Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Otago in Dunedin.
Bryann Avendaño, from Colombia, studying Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.
Hanna Watanabe, from Japan, is a Year 12 High School student at Rangiora New Life School, in Rangiora, Canterbury.
Khanh Phuong LE, from Vietnam, studying Law at Waikato University, Hamilton.
Atis Suksingha, from Thailand, studying Commerce, majoring in International Business and Marketing at the University of Otago.
Malina Grube, from Germany, studying Law at the University of Auckland, Auckland.

Students reveal intent to build community links
A student roundtable session saw 20 international students from across the UK give feedback on their experience. More targeted orientation and help finding part-time work were among their top recommendations. The ability to work part-time was seen as very important, not only for financial reasons but because of the opportunity to access a wider network, build self-confidence, and to immerse themselves in city life.

Researchers still not getting published
The head of Gadjah Mada University's (UGM) Graduate School of Medicine says inadequate writing skills means Indonesian researchers struggle to produce scientific papers for international journals. A recent study shows over a defined period, Indonesia published only 39,719 scientific documents, compared to Singapore’s 215,553 publications and Malaysia’s 181,251 publications.

Are micro-campuses a new model for international HE?
With an estimated 400 million people in developing countries lacking access to higher education, the University of Arizona (UA) has developed a ‘micro-campus’, using technology to deliver education to students anywhere in the world. Students watch lectures outside of class, and use class time on a local campus to work practically with other students.

The demand for international schools in Asia continues
Recent data shows that the demand for international schools in South East Asia is exceeding supply. Furthermore, student enrolment is no longer dominated by expatriates, but by local families who want an English-medium education with globally recognised qualifications for their children. Across the region, the number of students attending international schools increased by 10 percent from September 2015 to September 2016.
EUROPE
Europeans back funding vocational training over higher education
A recent survey of nearly 9,000 citizens in eight European countries reveals that, when forced to prioritise one area of education, 17 per cent chose higher education, compared with 30 per cent who want more vocational education and training (VET). Support for higher education was highest in Spain (30 per cent) and Italy (23 per cent), and lowest in Sweden (6 per cent), Germany and Denmark (both 9 per cent).

Japan to headline NZIEC as Country of Honour
The Country of Honour designation celebrates and showcases New Zealand’s international education connections with partner countries.
This year, ENZ has joined with the Japanese Embassy to celebrate the growing education connections between New Zealand and Japan.
Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager for Japan, said the timing couldn’t be better to showcase Japan.
“It is an exciting year for Japan and New Zealand relations, with Japan hosting the Rugby World Cup in September this year, and the Olympics and Paralympics in 2020.“NZIEC will leverage the attention this will bring to celebrate the strong education relationship between our two countries as well as to ignite a renewed, strategic partnership with Japan that presents new business opportunities for our industry partners.
“We look forward to celebrating this relationship with conference delegates in August, and already have lots of ideas of how to showcase Japanese culture at the event.”Japan is New Zealand’s third largest source of international students, with more than 10,000 Japanese students enrolled here annually. These numbers are on the rise, showing solid growth particularly in the school sector.
The Japanese government’s accelerated plans and policies for internationalisation, in conjunction with the two international sporting events, have prompted Japanese schools and universities to develop overseas study programmes.
For these reasons, ENZ signed a MOU with Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education in 2017 and Atsugi Board of Education in 2018.

Runway to New Zealand
Runway to New Zealand was the result of a collaboration between fashion schools from AUT and Massey University, and two leading fashion institutions in India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Pearl Academy. The project was supported by ENZ and by India’s premier fashion body, the Fashion Design Council of India.
Runway to New Zealand brought together six two-person teams of Kiwi and Indian student designers to create collections on the theme of ‘Future World Connections’. The project required the students to put together a ‘Think New’ collection using Indian sustainable fabrics to produce next generation contemporary garments.

A panel of celebrity Indian judges judged each team’s efforts. The Indian students from the two winning teams secured two-week internships at the participating New Zealand fashion schools, where they will gain first-hand experience of New Zealand’s innovative teaching style.
The Kiwi students had the opportunity to spend a couple of weeks in India leading up to the fashion show, when they could see and touch the beautiful locally-produced fabrics, and observe local processing techniques and artisanship.

The project has initiated discussions between the participating institutions that may well result in further exciting partnerships and collaborations.
Runway to New Zealand has boosted the profile of New Zealand as a high quality destination for fashion studies among the Indian aspirants. The event was attended by high profile Indian fashion media, resulting in coverage across a variety of outlets.
