Hannah Lee-Darboe has been seconded from NZTE to Education New Zealand as Acting General Manager – Marketing and Channel Development. Hannah was the High Impact Programme Portfolio Director at NZTE and is an experienced international marketer with 14 years’ experience growing businesses internationally. She will be with us until the end of June 2015.Emily Branthwaite, Programme Leader – Christchurch Industry Support Programme is leaving Canterbury Development Corporation and Education New Zealand after nearly three years of playing a central role in driving the recovery of Christchurch’s international education industry post-earthquakes. As the Christchurch Industry Support Programme transitions from delivery to complete by June 2015, Emily leaves to pursue other opportunities and we wish her well for the future. Emily hands over her programme leadership responsibilities to ENZ’s new Christchurch-based Business Development Manager, Greg Scott.Chortip Pramoolpol has been appointed to the position of Marketing and Strategic Relations Manager – Thailand. Chortip has been the Marketing Manager for Zespri International Limited since 2011 where she oversaw sales, marketing, customer relations and operations of the Zespri business in Thailand. Her role will be to establish and manage relationships with government agencies and key Thai education partners, provide information on the market and opportunities for New Zealand organisations, and lead ENZ marketing and promotional activities. Chortip starts with us on 12 January 2015.

Kiwi schools celebrate at SIEBA hui
The Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) held its second biennial hui over two days in Wellington.
Featuring more than 60 presenters, including author and television host Nigel Latta as keynote speaker, the hui was an opportunity for professional learning and a chance to celebrate the schools sector.
Jennifer Kirkham, SIEBA Professional Learning & Development Operations Manager, was impressed by the involvement and enthusiasm from delegates.
“It is a testament to the value they see in SIEBA events and activities, both for member schools and the wider industry, and also shows there is an appetite for greater collaboration.
“We appreciated the willingness of sector presenters to share with their colleagues, as schools always love to hear what others are doing.
Another highlight was the presentation by lawyer Tim Conder on how schools need to change their contracts and disciplinary processes to align with the recently amended Education Act.
“I think we all left the hui with long to-do lists,” said Ms Kirkham.
To celebrate the sector’s success, six international education professionals were honoured at the awards dinner with SIEBA International Education Leadership Awards.
Allan Goodhall from Mount Maunganui College and Grant Berry from Kerikeri High School, both on the eve of retirement after decades of service to the sector, received long service and outstanding contribution awards.
Lynda Sullivan from Rangitoto College received an award for innovation, and Terry Kraettli from Epsom Girls’ Grammar School, Barbara Charlton-Kelly from Newlands College, and Annemieke Hart from Tauranga Intermediate received recognition for their outstanding contributions to the school sector.
Recipients were nominated by their peers and were all deserving winners.

English New Zealand’s new Accredited Pathway Assessment opens up cross-sector collaboration
Bridge International College, Kaplan International Languages and Languages International are now able to offer the Accredited Pathway Assessment (APA).
Although there are already agreements between individual English New Zealand schools and universities, the APA puts in place a structure for acceptance of proficiency across all of the universities, English New Zealand executive director Kim Renner says.
“This will enable greater collaboration between English Language schools and the universities,” Renner says. “With inevitable changes coming for the export education industry due to COVID-19, seamless pathways into further study and close collaboration will become more important than ever before.”
In Australia, the rate of students who transitioned to further study is significant – according to a report released by the Australian government in January, 54 percent of English language students go on to attend an Australian university or vocational training provider. Anecdotally, we know the rate in New Zealand is much lower. There is room for New Zealand to encourage more of the 20,000 plus students who study at unfunded English language schools in New Zealand to make much more of pathway opportunities.
Accredited schools will use the APA to attract those students who are interested in studying at a New Zealand university, but may not meet the current English Language standards.
The APA is also a way that English Language schools can prepare students for New Zealand’s academic teaching style.
“The assessment is built into a school’s teaching – it’s not a one-off test,” Renner says. “Key goals are to increase cross-sector collaboration and provide a great student experience.”
This announcement is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by English New Zealand and Universities New Zealand in June last year. The APA is only available to English New Zealand member schools.

SIEBA’s 2018 hui is close to sell-out
With 320 registered delegates, the second annual SIEBA hui on 17-18 May at Te Papa in Wellington is fully booked on day one, with places still available for the dinner and day two.
The hui will feature 40 presenters from across the New Zealand school sector as well as a range of external experts.
Author and television host Nigel Latta is this year’s keynote speaker.
The hui is open to principals, international directors and managers, international deans, administrators and homestay co-ordinators of SIEBA member schools.
Jennifer Kirkham, SIEBA Professional Learning & Development Operations Manager, who is managing the hui, said it was “very pleasing” to see the hui generate such strong interest across the sector.
“It shows how SIEBA is continuing to grow in value to its member schools, government agencies and to wider industry.
“The hui offers a wide range of seminars focused on building cultural competency, the student experience and running an international student business, which will appeal to the variety of delegates attending the hui.”
The hui includes sessions on meaningful cross-cultural interaction that enrich the experience of all students, mental health and wellbeing needs of international students, and helping schools grow their international student programmes through effective strategic planning, marketing and budgeting, she said.
“It's also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the sector’s success, with five International Education Leadership Awards being presented during the conference dinner,” Kirkham said.
Richard Kyle, ENZ’s Business Development Manager, said ENZ’s relationship with SIEBA, as the school sector peak body for international education, has proven to be a very important government-industry partnership that continues to drive capability, quality and efficiency to the sector.
“SIEBA also provides advice and advocacy for its members and the wider sector along with other sector peak bodies on themes such as school-to-tertiary education pathways, which help ensure a thriving sector and sustainable growth for industry,” Kyle said.

New Zealand experience grows global indigenous network
A special bond forged through a Study Abroad programme, involving Vermont’s Champlain College and Auckland University of Technology (AUT), was marked by the gifting of a unique pare whakairo (carved doorway mantel) to the US College in September.
Called Te Hononga (The Convergence), the pare whakairo was created by kaiwhakairo (Māori carver) Pahi O’Carroll over four weeks in residence on the Champlain campus.
The pare is unlike any other. It is carved from a wood native to the area – black walnut – and evokes values, beliefs and traditions common to both Māori and the indigenous people of Vermont, the Abenaki.
The relationship between Champlain and AUT dates back five years, when New Zealand Honorary Consul and trustee of Champlain College, Dr George Burrill, first established a study abroad exchange programme between the two institutions. To date, over 100 students have participated.
One of the highlights of American students’ time at AUT is the Noho Marae programme.
“Every year students tell us how the Noho Marae programme has profoundly impacted them,” ENZ General Manager – International, Lisa Futschek, says. “It turns them into lifelong advocates for New Zealand, its education system and Māori culture.”
Run by AUT Senior Lecturer in Māori and Indigenous Development, Jason King, the mini-course includes basic Te Reo Māori, Māori mythology, waiata (songs) and cultural customs. It includes with a noho marae (weekend-long marae experience).
King describes the course as “the base of a tree, from which branches and leaves grow”.
“The course puts indigenous goggles on students,” he says. “It opens them up to areas of discussion with their own indigenous people.
“My ultimate aim is to connect us not only globally, but indigenously.”
Thanks to their connection to Māori via AUT and the Noho Marae programme, Champlain College made a formal connection to their own indigenous people, the Abenaki tribe. A representative from the Abenaki was present at the unveiling of Te Hononga.
Many US students choose to keep in touch after they return home through the student-led Whānau Councils. These were first established in 2010 after students from Europe were so moved by their AUT marae experience that they set up their own group to maintain their connection to New Zealand and each other. There are now three Whānau Councils across Europe and the US actively supported by AUT.
For the European council’s 10-year anniversary, members of group are planning to return to New Zealand – this time with their partners and children.
“We tell them during the Noho Marae, after studying in New Zealand you are whānau for life,” King says.

Agent e-learning upgrade
Having trained agents ensures that prospective students get the right information about living and studying in New Zealand, helping make New Zealand their study destination of choice.
This week Education New Zealand (ENZ) is upgrading the e-learning system to enhance the learning experience for users and make the training programme compatible with mobile devices. We have advised agents that e-learning will not be available from 2 – 9 February as we complete the upgrade.
ENZ is also making progress on translating the e-learning modules into Chinese, Japanese and Spanish to support agent training around the world. We will let you know when these are available.
