  • Future Proof 2.0

    The campaign builds on the success of an earlier campaign in March 2018, which reached more than 33 million potential students and achieved 14 million social engagements.

    We encourage New Zealand education providers to align their marketing activities with Future Proof 2.0 to increase and amplify impact.

    About the campaign

    Future Proof 2.0 is an integrated global campaign run across paid media, social media engagement, studyinnewzealand.govt.nz, email and PR.

    The campaign, which began 8 October and runs for eight weeks, aims to attract high quality students from our key strategic markets by raising awareness of New Zealand’s education quality.

    It integrates all of ENZ’s marketing channels, draws on behavioural data from our database marketing programme and leverages the one million-strong audience on our social channels (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and, in China, WeChat).

    The campaign will direct prospective students to a Future Proof 2.0 landing page and encourage them to join My StudyNZ, an online tool that helps them find the New Zealand study programmes that best suit their needs. Students can shortlist their favourite programmes, track their application progress and send enquiries to education providers.

    Campaign messaging

    Future Proof promotes a September 2017 report by The Economist Intelligence Unit ranking New Zealand as first out of 35 countries at preparing students for the future. Future Proof 2.0 continues the conversation by showcasing some of the exceptional teachers and academics who make New Zealand’s education system world leading.

    The campaign’s central message is: Our teachers lead the world in preparing students for the future.

    The key messages are:

    1. Our teachers give you the skills to put your knowledge to work in the world.

    • Students in New Zealand learn to think critically and creatively, work collaboratively and develop a global mindset, making them more prepared, and adaptable, for the future world of work.

    2. Our teachers challenge you to reach your potential in an unlimited learning environment.

    • Students in New Zealand gain practical, hands-on skills both inside and outside the classroom.

    3. Our teachers are inspired by a society that encourages curiosity, new ideas and respect for the world around us.

    • Students in New Zealand thrive in an open, welcoming society that embraces new ideas and innovative thinking.

    Future Proof 2.0 will keep the same slogan as the previous campaign: Future Proof yourself in New Zealand.

    We’ve created compelling content – videos, photos and written content – to share stories about New Zealand’s teachers with the world.

    While Future Proof 2.0 will feature many great teachers, our three stars are:

    Professor Kathleen Campbell, a geologist, paleoecologist and astrobiologist at the University of Auckland

    With her expert credentials and involvement in the NASA 2020 Mars Rover Mission, Kathleen is a standout example of the high-quality academics that students can work with at New Zealand universities. 

    Mark Hanlen, a marine studies teacher at Whakatane High School 

    A favourite amongst his students, and with an infectious passion for his subject, Mark's story makes a great showcase for hands-on, real-world learning. He brings the concept of manaakitanga (mutual respect) into his teaching both inside and outside the classroom.

    Dr Faith Kane, a senior lecturer in textiles at Massey University

    Faith brings a creative element with a future focus to the campaign. Her work in laser processing textiles and textile design for sustainability speaks to New Zealand's innovation strengths and real-world problem solving.

  • Recognising Manaaki and Prime Minister Scholarship Programme milestones

    ENZ took over operational management of the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships Programme (MNZSP) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 1 November 2022. The MNZSP is a key pillar of New Zealand’s International Development Cooperation commitments (formerly New Zealand Aid) and is the Government’s single-largest investment in international scholarships. The programme has a 70-year history and approximately 1,100 scholarships are awarded each year, to scholars from 112 developing nations. 

    Manaaki Scholarships Manager Julia Moore says the first 12 months has had a dual focus on bringing enhancements to the programme and ensuring it has a seamless transition into ENZ for scholars and providers.  

    ENZ is working closely with tertiary education providers to understand their needs, build relationships and identify areas for improvement. As part of this mahi, we recently brought together providers for the first ENZ run Tertiary Education Providers workshop. It was a great opportunity for all parties to come together, track progress in the past year and plan for the future” she says. 

    ENZ is also working jointly with providers to bring the programme forward after disruptions that took place as a result of COVID-19 border closures, including clearing a pipeline of scholars who had been selected pre or during the pandemic and had been unable to start their programmes in New Zealand. 

    A suite of branded digital collateral and assets has also been developed for partners in the Manaaki Programme with easy-to-use tools and assets for their marketing efforts, which they can find on ENZ’s BrandLab.

    Prime Minister’s Scholarships 

    In April 2022 ENZ was delighted to award group Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America (PMSA/PMSLA) to Māori whānau trusts for the first time in the 10-year history of the scheme. This is part of a wider programme of work to ensure the scholarship programme delivers on our Te Tiriti obligations and is more accessible to all New Zealanders over the age of 18. 

    The Prime Minister’s Scholarship programme aims to strengthen New Zealand’s ability to engage with key Asian and Latin American trading partners, improving the internationalisation of indigenous communities, New Zealand tertiary institutions, showcasing the strength and quality of New Zealand's education system and enhancing inter-cultural awareness and connections between New Zealand and other countriesThe scholarship offers flexible funding to support both short and long-term programmes including study exchange, internships, postgraduate study, and language programmes.  

    The Erana Kaunga Tuhura Whānau Trust was one of the 2022 group scholarship recipients. The group travelled to Indonesia to learn about sustainable living systems and building techniques, they produced a video to capture their time there. 

    Director Scholarships Carla Rey Vasquez says she’s humbled to see the video the trust put together.  

    It is a great demonstration of how ENZ is effectively partnering with whānau Māori to achieve global citizenship outcomes and transform the way that international education delivers with and for Māori” she says. 

    ENZ is eager to continue partnering with iwi, marae and whānau groups to raise Māori participation in the Prime Minister’s Scholarship programme. The next round of Prime Minister’s Scholarships will open for group applications at the start of next year.

  • From the CE: A celebration of energy, optimism and human spirit

    Kia ora tātou,

    NZIEC TI KUA – the pathway forward, was a celebration of the energy, optimism, and the human spirit of the international education sector in New Zealand. 

    It was great to see, and be among, more than 590 delegates reconnecting in person, sharing experiences, discussing the future, and listening to a remarkable range of quality speakers. All the presenters were inspiring and all clearly outlined some the challenges and the opportunities as we move forward. 

    First among these was the visiting Minister for Education in China, His Excellency Huai Jinpeng whose warm outgoing personality was clear to all who met him. It was enormously positive that Minister Huai emphasised China’s was willing to work together with New Zealand to “promote win-win cooperation” and “to unite for mutual benefit”. I hope many of us accept his open invitation to visit China. As he said “Better to see for oneself than to hear from others”. 

    From the New Zealand side it was a great to have Minister for Education, Hon Jan Tinetti, attend the Gala dinner, and reinforce that “education is one of the key pillars of the New Zealand-China relationship and a foundation for enduring links between our countries”. China was the Country of Honour for this year’s conference and is an important long-term partner. 

    After a break of four years since the last NZIEC was held in-person, the friendship and happiness amongst conference delegates was tangible. 

    Certainly, there are challenges ahead as we continue to rebuild the sector. Several of the conference presenters highlighted the changes in global demographics, workplace demand for skills and technological developments as key drivers for a different future in the next 30 years. But the progress achieved in the year since the borders reopened was also cause for celebration and highlighted the adaptability and resilience of education providers throughout the sector. 

    I’d like to thank officials from the Ministry of Education, New Zealand Qualifications Authority and Immigration New Zealand who attended the conference and gave insights and answering queries relating to the impact of policies and practice. International education is a team sport and it was great to see their commitment to the future of the sector. And a very special thanks must also go to the ENZ organising team and supporting cast who delivered a remarkable and uplifting event. 

    As the curtain came down at the outstanding Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, and delegates said final farewells before returning to their homes and communities, my lasting impression was that of an industry re-enlivened by the human contact we have all missed so much.  

    As our Chair, Tracey Bridges commented in her opening welcome, we have good cause to be optimistic about the future of the sector and the contribution it can make to all the people of Aotearoa and beyond.  

    It is now our responsibility to act on this optimism and to move forward. As Peter Drucker once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it”.

  • Bid to host the Asia Pacific Association for International Education Conference and Exhibition 2021

  • Minister Hipkins welcomes new Board members

    During the meeting, Minister Hipkins shared his views on the importance of the new International Education Strategy, ENZ’s role and how international education fits within the Government’s plans for a modern and prosperous New Zealand.

    John Goulter, ENZ General Manager, Stakeholders and Communications, said the meeting was a good opportunity for the new Board members to hear directly from the Minister what the Government’s priorities are for the sector.

    “Each Board member brings a great deal of experience to the Board and fresh perspectives to ENZ’s work yet it’s equally important for them to understand the Government’s position and what Minister Hipkins sees as their role.”

    There was general agreement at the meeting that launch of the new Strategy reflected international education’s importance as an export sector for New Zealand, with ample opportunity for providers to grow the value of the sector around the world, he said.

    Also discussed was the interface between international education and immigration, the future of the global international education market and the importance of showing how international education contributes to New Zealanders’ wellbeing.

    International education’s importance to New Zealand’s bilateral relationships and the desire to see more New Zealanders studying overseas as part of their studies was also covered.
