    At certain times of year, you can stand in a certain apple orchard in the American state of Vermont and hear strands of a Māori waiata.

    The East and West Coast Whānau Councils were set up by former students of the Auckland University of Technology’s Noho Marae programme. They were so moved by their experience in Aotearoa that they set up these groups so that they can meet regularly to eat kai, do haka and poi, and keep the whānau spirit alive.

    These students are but a handful of the North American students that choose to study in New Zealand every year. In 2018, 3,028 students from the US travelled here for education, a number that has risen steadily – by nearly 23 percent – since 2014.

    “More than 300,000 American students study outside the US every year,” ENZ Regional Director – Americas & Europe, Amy Rutherford says. “By educating over one percent of those students year upon year, New Zealand is punching well above its weight.”

    Diversity and inclusion

    There is a common misperception amongst students in North America that New Zealand is an ‘easy’ destination. Students are drawn here for the tourist opportunities and laidback lifestyle just as much as a quality education.

    In an effort to promote New Zealand as a world-leading education destination, ENZ’s team based in North America have focused on diversity and inclusion.  

    The remit of diversity and inclusion in the US is much broader than it is in Aotearoa. It encompasses not only racial and ethnic minorities, but single parents, first-generation university students, military veterans, and those with disabilities.

    Within this space, ENZ has been promoting New Zealand as a welcoming, progressive place to study. As Māori are world leaders in indigenous leadership, New Zealand is particularly well-positioned to support Native American and indigenous students.

    New Zealand alumni like Brook Thompson and Hailey Suina have reported that connecting with te ao Māori has strengthened their understanding of their own cultures, boosting their confidence to act as leaders at home.

    As part of this work, ENZ recently renewed its commitment to a partnership with the US regarding its Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship, a prestigious prize aimed at students from disadvantaged backgrounds. ENZ has pledged NZ $250,000 over five years for Gilman scholars who choose to come to New Zealand.

    Beyond study abroad

    The majority of US students come here at university level, often for one semester only as part of the US university and study abroad provider study abroad programmes.

    Rather than come here for a complete qualification, US students travel short-term during their third or fourth years of university. Their work here is then cross-credited to their home institution.

    Amy says that study abroad is very popular. For those students interested in travel, adventure, and discovering themselves, it is largely self-sustaining. New opportunities in study abroad lie in expanding this base to those students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, or regions of the country where not much is know about New Zealand.

    Amy’s team is now increasingly focused on a new opportunity emerging for New Zealand institutions: attracting tertiary students to study here for their whole qualification.

    For American students, committing to leave their home country for at least three years is a big ask. Attending college is a massive social milestone in the US, and one that alumni pin their identities on for the rest of their lives.

    However, increasing numbers of students are looking for study opportunities offshore as the cost of studying in the US continues to rise.

    US students are drawn to New Zealand’s highly ranked, innovative programmes in niche areas. An example of this is Massey University’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science. This course can be completed in five years (as opposed to eight in the US), costs a fraction of an equivalent US degree, and is approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), allowing graduates to return home and begin working immediately in the field.

    Identifying and promoting these academic strengths among New Zealand institutions and explaining how they can propel students towards the career path of their choice is key to positioning a New Zealand education as a desirable alternative to the classic American college life.

  • Update from Immigration New Zealand

    It is now easier for Chinese passport holders to study short courses in New Zealand if they are travelling from Australia and hold an eligible Australian visa.   

    Chinese passport holders can now come to New Zealand from Australia with a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), rather than applying for a study visa.  

    An NZeTA allows you to come to New Zealand as a visitor and study short courses of up to three months. You don’t need a study visa.   

    To be eligible you must:  

    • be travelling from Australia – not transiting through Australia  

    • Hold an eligible Australian visa   

    • Meet NZeTA requirements  

      • be in good health.  

      • have a good character  

      • have a genuine reason for visiting New Zealand  

      • have enough money to pay your expenses 

      • have plans to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.

  • Market Insights Sessions held for PTEs and ELS in Auckland last month

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) invited representatives from some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Private Training Establishments (PTEs) and English Language Schools (ELSs) to come and hear from our in-market colleagues who were in Aotearoa New Zealand in August.  

    Felix Ye, Senior Market Development Manager for Guangzhou held an insights session on the China market for PTEs and ELSs, Jugnu Roy, Director of Engagement East Asia and India held a session for PTEs on the India market and Javiera Visedo, Director of Engagement Latin America held a session for PTEs and ELSs on the Latin American market, specifically Chile, Colombia and Brazil.  

    The insights shared included key facts, policies, trends and observations about the individual markets, marketing channels and advice for student-recruiting activities, as well as opportunities and challenges for the sector.  

    Brijesh Sethi, Founder and Chairman of New Zealand Skills and Education Group and Co-Chairperson of Quality Tertiary Institutes said the sessions offered good insight into how ENZ can assist PTEs in marketing and opening up new markets. 

    “This is especially important in this tough environment for many vocational sub degree providers. The sessions were also a great opportunity to meet and hear from ENZ colleagues from these markets in person,” added Brijesh. 

    ENZ’s General Manager, Sector Engagement, Wendy Kerr, said that it was great to have a good turnout as these sessions are one of the ways we can engage directly and support our customers with useful information about the various markets they are targeting.  

    “We hope that our customers find our targeted insights useful in their own decision-making processes. With the opportunity also for open discussion throughout these sessions, they certainly are an important tool for us too in gaining a better understanding of the needs of the various PTEs and ELSs, meaning we can be more targeted in our approach to supporting them in the future.

  • Opportunities to participate in two major education events in Middle East

    Global Higher Education Exhibition Oman (GHEDEX Oman) will take place in Muscat from 27 to 29 March 2022, supported by the Omani Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Secondary and tertiary students, parents, young professionals and education professionals from across the Gulf Cooperation Council region will attend.

    Recent GHEDEX events have been held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but this year the event will have both face-to-face and virtual options. Alongside universities, GHEDEX 2022 is open to vocational training providers and EdTech companies.

    The International Conference & Exhibition for Education (ICEE) is scheduled to take place in Riyadh from 8 to11 May 2022, organised by the Saudi Ministry of Education. Five New Zealand universities participated alongside ENZ at the 2019 event, which was previously known as IECHE. This year, organisers have opened up participation to include English language schools, aviation training providers, vocational education institutions, and EdTech companies. 

    “This is the first time these events have taken place in person since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we know building relationships face-to-face is important in the Gulf region,” says Amy Rutherford, ENZ’s Regional Director, Americas, Middle East and Europe.  

    “This is also the first time these events have invited other education sectors to participate as well as universities. There are significant opportunities for English language schools, aviation training providers, and vocational education institutions to attract students from Saudi Arabia, Oman and other GCC countries, as well as opportunities for EdTech companies in the region,” Amy said.

    ENZ will host a New Zealand pavilion and have on-the-ground representation at both events.   • ENZ Board welcomes Shruthi Vijayakumar

    In her role as a Future Director, Shruthi will bring her voice to discussions around the board table and be mentored by longtime Board member Lyn Provost. Her first meeting will be this April.

    “Essentially, I’m part of the ENZ Board to learn how an amazing Board functions, and what good governance looks like,” Shruthi says. “I think all the Board members have such fascinating experience. They’re really good governance role models.”

    ENZ Board Chair, Steve Maharey, says the Board decided to participate in the Future Directors programme in order to support young talent.

    "We also wanted input and insight from a recent international student like Shruthi," he says. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the position, and has already proven to be a great asset to the Board and ENZ."

    An alumnus of Oxford University’s business school and finalist for New Zealand’s Young Person of the Year, Shruthi has built an impressive resumé within the world of social innovation and leadership development. She co-founded the Emerge Institute, and currently runs her own coaching and facilitation business, teaches at AUT, and consults at Callaghan Innovation.

    “Education has been a passion of mine for a long time,” she says. “It’s one of those things that has a long-term impact. It shapes young generations for the challenges that are coming our way. It goes beyond being just a commercial thing.”

    Shruthi also believes that learning will remain in her future. She wants to continue developing and growing in her career as the rest of society does.

    “The world is changing so quickly,” she says. “It doesn’t really make sense to me to decide now where I will spend my time in the future – there are so many paths. I’m so open to changing directions and continuing to reflect on how I can best contribute.

    “All in all, I'm very grateful and excited to be joining the ENZ Board and looking forward to being a part of such important work and contributing as best as I can.”
