    Australia 

    From 1 July 2024, holders of a Visitor Visa in Australia will not be able to apply for a Student Visa onshore, in new rules announced by the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Claire O’Neil MP. Temporary Graduate Visa holders will also no longer be able to apply for Student Visas onshore. According to the Minister, these changes are aimed at restricting visa hopping, “ending the loopholes that allow student and other temporary visa holders to continuously extend their stay in Australia”. 

    Europe 

    The European Council, composed of national ministers from each EU country, has accepted a recommendation from the European Commission (which proposes and implements policies for the EU), to increase opportunities for European youth to learn, train, and study in other parts of Europe as well as in non-EU countries. 

    Japan 

    The annual survey of The Japan Association of Overseas Studies (JAOS) was released in May, providing a baseline indicator of outbound mobility from Japan based on responses from a sample of 40 JAOS member-agencies. Top line results show that outbound student numbers have now recovered to 83% of pre-Covid levels however destination choices continue to shift for Japanese students, and more are choosing to study within Asia.  

    Latin America 

    Latin America has become a region of high interest as colleges and universities worldwide seek to diversify their international student population, steering away from the traditional recruitment markets such as Southeast Asia. 

    South Africa 

    After pandemic-induced turbulence in South Africa’s English Language Teaching sector, which saw a decline in memberships, school closures, and more, the country is witnessing a significant market recovery post-Covid.

    This survey is important to gauge ENZ’s performance and importantly, let us know how we’re doing, what services you value and what you’d like to see more of.   

    In last year’s survey, you highlighted several themes that we’ve been working to address. We heard that you need more advance notice of our global events to allow you to plan better. In response, we published our event calendar in November, covering events to be held in the last half of 2024. 

    You also said you wanted to see closer alignment between government agencies and the sector. As a result, we have worked with peak bodies and key government agencies to refresh the purpose of the quarterly Peak Body Forum and built a closer working relationship with the Alliance of Peak Bodies.  

    Other important themes included improving our engagement and integrating views of the sector in our planning, while providing more clarity on our range of services and support. We have provided more webinars ranging from showcasing the regions to the global agent network, through to leveraging research, data and analysis to provide you with targeted market insights 

    Peak body and sector representatives were involved early in our business planning, including market prioritisation, to ensure that we walk in step with the sector. 

    While we may not always get it right, you can rest assured that we are listening and continually striving to deliver the products and services that you value and help you to grow

  • From the Chief Executive: Importance of international students to New Zealand

    Just before Christmas, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao filed its submission to the Productivity Commission Inquiry into immigration policy settings.  

    ENZ has taken a strong stand in the detailed 15-page submission, refuting some statements made about international students in the Commission’s preliminary report, and pointing out that international students are different to other temporary migrants included in the inquiry.  

    In the submission we say international students should not be characterised as coming to New Zealand to seek employment, invest or run a business. Rather, international students coming to New Zealand support the achievement of the Government’s broader goals and objectives, as well as contributing to NZ’s economic development. More than two thirds of international students fund their studies through their families and their own savings and most international tertiary students have left New Zealand within five years of completing their studies. 

    The submission also discusses the broad benefits international students deliver for New Zealand, including regional development, research output, and strengthened bilateral relationships with other countries. 

    The Productivity Commission aims to present its final report to the Government in April 2022. 

    In other recent news, our international teams have recently completed several partnership agreements that will continue to sustain international education while our borders are closed. These include a research exchange agreement with DAAD (a major German academic exchange organisation), a science research agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, and digital classroom cultural exchanges with South Korea. We also highlight the growing success of the NZ Global Competence Certificate during 2021.  These items are covered in more detail in this issue of E-News.

  • ENZ seals exchange deal with Germany for early-career researchers

    DAAD is the world's largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers, and is a key partner for ENZ in Germany.

    Early-career researchers from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology will be able to take part in the DAAD’s Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP).  In the future, young German researchers will also be able to travel to New Zealand under the programme.

    The programme covers all subject areas and is open to students who are close to completing their doctorate, as well as to academics who completed a doctorate within the last five years.

    ENZ will support the New Zealand institutions involved to fund the costs and living stipend for New Zealand researchers to travel to Germany, while their German counterparts will be funded by the DAAD. ENZ would match the contribution from local institutions to a maximum of NZ$12,500 per year per project. Projects would normally be funded for two years.

    New Zealand-German Academic Partnership Event

    ENZ will host a virtual New Zealand-German academic partnership event on 23 February 2022, from 8:00-9:00 am New Zealand Time (22 February, 20:00-21:00 pm CET). This will be an opportunity for New Zealand and German institutions to learn more about the programme, share their ideas and identify opportunities for joint research projects. The call for proposals opens on 6 April 2022 for the funding period from 2023-2025. Those interested in attending the partnership event can register here.

    The exchange agreement was signed in Berlin on 25 November 2021 and builds on our strong education and science links with Germany. It was one of the key actions arising from visit to Germany in January 2020 by a delegation from New Zealand’s Centres of Research Excellence, led by ENZ’s Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

  • SheLeads Campaign – inspiring future Indian learners

    Launched on International Women’s Day on 8 March, the SheLeads campaign was developed by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s (ENZ's) India-based team. The campaign was multi-pronged and aimed to celebrate women leaders and alumni across various disciplines from New Zealand education providers with a diverse audience of young and mature learners in India.  

    The campaign was launched on ENZ’s South Asia LinkedIn channel which was then used throughout to highlight the impact and value of a New Zealand education through the sharing of success stories of women leaders in New Zealand and beyond as well as those of Indian women alumni. Education media across several key Indian publications also reported on the campaign to their estimated 58 million readers.  

    The LinkedIn campaign profiled over 24 women leaders and achieved 105,000 impressions, 1,500 page views, while the ENZ South Asia page gained more than 600 new followers, surpassing the campaign’s targets.

     

    To engage students and lift the NZ education profile amongst this group, a SheLeads debate competition was organised between five leading schools in Delhi. The students were tasked with debating “the underrepresentation of women in STEM”’ and the 50 plus participants were invited to share diverse perspectives and include examples from New Zealand. 
     
    Undergraduate learners from over 100 tertiary Indian Institutions were also invited to participate in the campaign through submission of video essays. A shortlist of 10 entries were judged by Professor Carol Mutch from the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education and Social Work.

    Finally, ENZ hosted a virtual workshop on ‘Organisational Change and Resilience’ with school principals and leaders from over 500 schools across India invited to attend. This workshop was facilitated by AcademyEx Founder, Frances Valintine and discussions focused on the innovative approach to learning that leaders must now consider in this rapidly changing world.  

    The finalists and winners of both competitions were invited to a campaign concluding event at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi on May 18. The event featured an engaging line up including an inter-school debate competition for the debate competition finalists, a panel discussion featuring alumni titled “Trailblazers: Women leaders who catalyse change” and the SheLeads Essay Showcase featuring the top three finalists. New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India, H.E Patrick John Rata was on hand to present the winners with their awards in front of guests that included high school counsellors, students, parents, and representatives from New Zealand institutions as well as the Principal of Jesus and Mary College in New Delhi.

    ENZ’s Director of Engagement East Asia and India, Jugnu Roy, said that it was a huge privilege being able to interview so many talented women leaders and alumni to showcase their outstanding achievements. She also said that seeing the energy and enthusiasm that the students brought to both competitions was another campaign highlight.

    “New Zealand has a proud history of striving for gender equality and continues to improve outcomes for women by strongly supporting women in education and training, utilising women’s skills to grow the economy, and encouraging and developing women leaders.  

    “I am sure this campaign will inspire our students here in India, particularly our female students, to consider choosing New Zealand as an education destination and follow in the footsteps of these incredible role models,” said Jugnu.
