Six million students look to NZ's teachers in digital campaign
On 8 October, ENZ launched Future Proof 2.0, the second iteration of its successful “Future Proof” marketing campaign from earlier this year, which raised awareness of New Zealand’s #1 ranking in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Worldwide Educating for the Future Index.
Philippa Brown, ENZ’s International Digital Content Manager, said the new campaign aims to personalise the ranking by showcasing the teachers and academics who make New Zealand’s education system world leading.
“Brand research has shown that teacher quality is an important factor in decision making – so the campaign’s central message is: Our teachers lead the world in preparing students for the future.
“By creating campaign videos, profiles and photos of our teachers and the ways they work to encourage and challenge their students, we hope to attract more international students seeking that same learning environment.”
The campaign will run over eight weeks across 14 of ENZ’s strategic markets, and has already reached over six million students and attracted close to 4,000 to sign up to our database.
“These prospective students receive a series of emails that further tell New Zealand’s education story and encourage them to register for My StudyNZ, where they can find study programmes aligned to their interests, and connect directly with New Zealand institutions and agents.
“Future Proof 2.0 offers a fantastic opportunity for New Zealand providers to increase the impact of their own marketing by aligning their activities with the campaign. For example, they can highlight their region’s or institution’s teachers while the campaign is running.”
Providers can access free Future Proof 2.0 assets in The Brand Lab, including videos, imagery and other content.

New Zealand – South Korea digital student exchange
From September to December 2021 more than 300 New Zealand students from a range of primary, intermediate and secondary schools joined with more than 700 students from elementary and middle schools in Seoul and Gangwon in digital classroom cultural exchanges.
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao worked in partnership with two education organisations in South Korea, Gangwon International Education Institute and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, as well as with NZ-based Learn English Live, to deliver the programme.
The sessions included conversation in English, peer-to-peer teaching and learning, cultural learnings and sharing, and interactive games. Student responses to the programme across both countries highlighted how much they enjoyed meeting people from different cultures and learning to respect different views. Around 70% of New Zealand students said they made a South Korean friend through the digital exchange forums while South Korean students highlighted the improvement in their English language skills, with 70% saying they would like to come to New Zealand.
Parents and teachers also shared heart-warming comments about the how the programme had built their child’s confidence and given them a leadership opportunity. In a survey conducted at the completion of the programme, parents of Lara, a nine-year old New Zealand girl, shared their experience. “It’s been excellent to observe Lara’s leadership ability shine through. I never realised how confident she is and her ability to teach and interact with kids from a different culture… Lara has become more aware of other cultures and appreciates the diversity around her.”
Teachers were also impressed, with one from Manurewa Intermediate commenting, "I want my students to be a part of this programme because it teaches them so many skills."
Following the success of the initial programme, the digital student exchange is set to continue in 2022, expanding to more New Zealand schools and implementing new ideas from students to meet their growing interest in other cultures and languages. New Zealand schools interested in joining the 2022 digital culture exchange can contact William Clarke at Learn English Live: William.h.clarke@hotmail.com
Education cooperation initiatives with ENZ, such as the Global Competence Certificate and this programme of digital culture exchanges are supported by the Arrangement on Education Cooperation that was signed by ENZ and Gangwon International Education Institute in November 2021. A similar agreement was reached with Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education last March.
The digital student exchange programme is in line with ENZ’s goal to develop global citizens as part of the New Zealand International Education Strategy 2018-2030.

New Zealand team connects with European educators
Representatives from all eight New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology joined the European Association for International Education (EAIE) community exchange, run virtually this year from 28 September to 1 October.
At the New Zealand Pavilion, ENZ’s Europe team led a “What’s new in New Zealand” session on the global and local initiatives ENZ has launched to keep our sector engaged with international stakeholders. Participants showed particular interest in the new Studying Sustainability in Aotearoa New Zealand guide on Study with New Zealand.
Ahead of the event, ENZ briefed representatives from our tertiary institutions on developments in Europe over the past year and the next steps we are planning.
Four key education agents from Germany, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom joined a frank panel discussion on the current perceptions of New Zealand in their countries. The agents from our ENZ Recognised Agency programme (ENZRA) discussed the ways we can work together to make sure our international education sector is ready to go once border restrictions are lifted.
ENZ’s Europe Team also joined with the European Commission to co-host an online workshop on the European Union’s Erasmus+ education cooperation and exchange programmes. Representatives from New Zealand and Australian higher education institutions were invited.
The workshop, timed for the start of a new seven-year funding cycle, dealt with the basics of three key Erasmus+ projects – international credit mobility, Erasmus Mundus international study programmes and Jean Monnet Actions on teaching and research.
Another workshop, hosted by the European Commission in November 2021, will go into more detail. If you’d like to know more, get in touch with ENZ’s Market Development Manager Europe, Olga Elli at Olga.Elli@enz.govt.nz

Update: Developing Viet Nam for the New Zealand school sector
John Laxon, ENZ Regional Director - South, South East Asia & the Middle East, would like to thank the 87 schools that participated in the webinar (a recording is available on IntelliLab here) and the 56 schools that have expressed interest in participating in a sector-wide initiative for Viet Nam.
“We’re excited by the overwhelming interest from New Zealand schools in a co-ordinated market development plan for Viet Nam and look forward to partnering with them to grow the numbers of Vietnamese school students in New Zealand.”
ENZ is now working with SIEBA on how New Zealand schools can be involved in the strategy or broader market development initiatives. This process will include capturing the wide variety of secondary schools including state, integrated and independent schools along with a mix of single sex and co-ed schools.
Richard Kyle, ENZ Business Development Manager, says the aim is to ensure representation from as many regions as possible to showcase both the variety of the school sector and New Zealand communities.
“It is challenging but we want to get it right, as selected schools will have priority at the ENZ fairs in Viet Nam in March,” said Richard.
ENZ hopes to inform all schools of their involvement in the strategy or broader market development initiatives by the week beginning 18 November.
