• International study experience in Brazil excites scholarship recipients

  A group of 15 students from the universities of Auckland and Waikato have recently returned to New Zealand after a month’s study in Brazil focusing on history and rights of indigenous people.  

  The students are group recipients of the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Latin America, which promotes international study opportunities for New Zealanders. 

  The group’s itinerary included lectures and field trips around Brazil, including Brasília, São Paulo, the largest city in the southern hemisphere; and Ubatuba, a beautiful, coastal city that joins the Atlantic Forest to the ocean. 

  Students had the opportunity to meet local indigenous communities such as the Guarani and share their experiences and stories of Aotearoa New Zealand. They discovered the challenges and difficulties faced by indigenous people in Brazil, as well as the richness of their ways of life, music and handicrafts, as well as their connection to their spiritual world. 

  One of the highlights for the students was their visit to the recently opened Museum of Indigenous Cultures in São Paulo, which offered them a glimpse of the contemporary expression of Brazilian indigenous art, with diverse manifestations such as photography, hip-hop and art installations with social protest.

  The ENZ team in Brazil closely followed the journey of the scholarship recipients across the country.

  ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Brazil, Bruna de Natale said the students’ visit was a wonderful opportunity that has further grown the rich, cultural, and academic connections between Brazil and New Zealand.  

  “We were pleased to see how deeply the students immersed themselves in learning about history and indigenous rights in Brazil and make connections with indigenous communities in the country. It’s amazing to see the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Latin America enable this rich exchange of ideas and knowledge between New Zealand and Brazil,” de Natale said. 

  The four-week visit ended in Brasília, where the students synthesised their learning in Brazil by presenting original projects that promote the connection between the indigenous cultures of Brazil and Aotearoa New Zealand.

• Kiwi educational publishers promote NZ at Frankfurt fair

  Running over five days in early October, the Frankfurt Book Fair saw publishers, agents and authors from all over the world converge to deal in rights and talk books, with many opportunities to forge new publishing relationships. 

  This year, nine publishers from commercial and educational areas of New Zealand publishing shared the collective stand under the PANZ (Publishers Association of New Zealand) banner, with ENZ proudly sponsoring Dame Wendy Pye, Sunshine Publishing; Tracy Strudley, Global Education Systems Ltd; and Nicola Smith, Essential Resources. 

  New Zealand publishers have steadily cemented a firm and respected place at the fair, riding high on the back of being Guest of Honour in 2012. 

  PANZ President and Publisher at Oratia Media, Peter Dowling said the support from Creative New Zealand and Education New Zealand has helped them to promote New Zealand literature and educational publishing internationally.

  “With help from these two agencies, we’ve worked hard to expand New Zealand’s global presence over the last year, adding two new book fairs to our roster alongside Frankfurt — the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in March, and the Guadalajara International Book Fair in November.”

  For many educational publishers, these fairs are key platforms to launch globally. To help educational publishers prepare for these opportunities PANZ, supported by ENZ, will host a free networking lunch and workshop in Auckland focussing on export rights. This will be a valuable opportunity for educational publishers interested in extending their international reach, and is open to non-PANZ Members.

• Kiwi schools hit the road in the Philippines

  Led by a team of ENZ staff, the group made the journey through Manila and Cebu over one week in September in a (very cosy) ENZ bus.

  Desiree Lee, ENZ’s Market Manager, Malaysia and Philippines, said it was great to see the camaraderie shared by New Zealand providers and the shared vision of promoting New Zealand education to the world.

  “We had a blast hosting our energetic providers from the university, ITP, PTE and school sectors across the Philippines. We braved the Manila traffic together, met with more than 200 international school students whose interests ranged from medicine to creative writing.”

  The providers had another chance to meet school counsellors, New Zealand alumni and parents at the ENZ Networking Night hosted by Ambassador to the Philippines, David Strachan, at the Official Residence.

  “Most Filipino students considering study abroad are from the private education network and, to attract these students to New Zealand, we have to be prepared to compete against strong brand names like there are in the US,” explains Desiree.

  “The US is the most high-profile study destination for Filipino students, with a very active in-market presence including many Ivy League names such as Stanford University.

  “Targeted activities such as the Schools Roadshow is a chance to get some face time with these students and present our unique offering.”

  The tour of the Philippines was capped off with an oversubscribed agent seminar in Cebu, where Immigration New Zealand gave key market updates.

  “They revealed that Cebu, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Davao del Sur and Cavite are the top five regions where student applicants are coming from.

  “INZ also highly recommends the use of its online application platform which is far more cost and time efficient.”

  New Zealand providers included Carmel College, Rangitoto College, University of Auckland, Massey University, ACG Education, Ara Institute of Canterbury, Southern Institute of Technology, Toi Ohomai, WelTec & Whitireia, Eastern Institute of Technology, Manukau Institute of Technology, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, and more.
