Insights for PTEs & ELS on how to better attract students from China
In June, participants from Private Training Establishments (PTEs) and English Language Schools (ELS) in New Zealand were invited by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and the North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE) to attend a workshop looking at opportunities in China. The workshop was called “"Navigating the new dynamics of Chinese overseas students seeking to study with PTEs and English Language Schools."

Following the conclusion of the workshop, a report was commissioned by North Asia CAPE and facilitated by ENZ, with Shanghai-based market research company China Skinny conducting an in-depth exploration of key topics discussed during the event.
The report, ‘Insights for New Zealand’s English Language Schools and PTEs to better attract Chinese students’, was launched at an event at ENZ’s Auckland office in September with participants from PTEs and ELS. Mark Tanner, founder and managing director of China Skinny presented the report putting a focus on:

Building awareness of your institutions with your Chinese target audience.

Considerations for PTEs and English language schools.

Examples of how other institutions are marketing to their target audiences in China, with an accompanying checklist.
Richard Kensington, Principal of Academic Relations at UP Education, attended both the workshop and the report launch.
He said, “These initiatives by ENZ provided useful insights into Chinese students considering overseas vocational education, including some we were not previously aware of.
"It also reminded us of the significant potential in China’s vocational education market. We need to explore new, innovative ways to recruit students, rather than just relying on traditional methods,” continued Richard.

ENZ hosts its first famil since 2019
Eleven public universities were represented in the Malaysian delegation of senior executives from the Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn Bhd (METEOR). METEOR is a consortium of universities that aims to provide advanced solutions through technology. This was an exploratory visit, to enable delegates to discuss a range of opportunities and possible partnerships with New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga.
The visit was exciting on many fronts as our institutions demonstrated their expertise and explored mutually beneficial relationships, regions showcased their attractions, and the famil delegates from Malaysia experienced many aspects of New Zealand.
The eight-day visit included Wellington, Canterbury and the Waikato. While the start of the week coincided with a cold southerly storm, this was mitigated by warm hospitality and the promise of sun later in the week.

The delegation was fortunate to meet with Minister of Education Chris Hipkins during their visit. While in Wellington they also signed an Education Cooperation Agreement with ENZ that provides a framework for our relationship going forward. They also met up with Malaysian students at various institutions and heard about their personal experiences here.
The delegation saw trades in action at WELTEC’s trades campus where they observed building apprentices on a block course.
Famils are important for ENZ as well as for New Zealand institutions, as they establish relationships and strengthen people-to-people links. They are also a key way to showcase some of the best education New Zealand has to offer across different regions.
ENZ looks forward to hosting more famils in the coming months, in partnership with institutions and regions throughout New Zealand.

India promotional season targets new cities
The ENZRA fairs took place in four new markets this year: Jaipur, Bangalore, Dehradun and Pune.
Jugnu Roy, ENZ’s Country Manager – India, said this offered a great opportunity to reach out to aspiring undergraduate and postgraduate students from new Indian markets.
“Indian families are increasingly choosing a New Zealand education as the best option for their children’s career paths. There was a 17% increase in Indian students enrolling at New Zealand universities in 2018, and a further 43% increase in first-time student visas in 2019.
“As part of the university strategy for India, our focus is on increasing awareness and enrolments at undergraduate levels, particularly amongst students who have traditionally been looking to the US, UK and Europe for their undergraduate degrees.”
In addition to the fairs, ENZ organised further activities for seven New Zealand universities. This included a roadshow to two prominent private schools in Delhi where they presented their strengths in the areas of business, engineering, science & technology, media, and art and design. This was followed by a high energy New Zealand-themed quiz show and some guest lectures by visiting academics from New Zealand universities.
ENZ also announced the first New Zealand Excellence Awards undergraduate package for Indian students, offering 18 scholarships worth $10,000 each to study at any one of the New Zealand’s universities. Applications close 10 June 2019.
