Student Visa Dashboard for November 2016
Student visas only capture students who enter New Zealand with a student visa. These students are mostly those who are planning to study for more than three months.
Student visa data is a reliable indicator of whether students are entering, remaining or leaving New Zealand. The dashboard contains detailed tables and graphs on the numbers of both first-time and total international student visas issued, with commentary on the trends to date.
The November 2016 dashboard includes summary level trends comparing to the three year average, year-to-date and the same month in the previous year. It also includes more detailed breakdowns by markets, sectors and regions focusing on year-to-date and monthly trends.

Feedback from education agents opens up conversation on how ENZ can better support them
Over half (57 per cent) of those surveyed are members of the ENZ Recognised Agency (ENZRA) programme.
The survey, a cross-team ENZ initiative, was a useful opportunity to open up a conversation with agents and to continue to support them while borders remain closed.
Over 40 per cent of agents surveyed said that that 75 to 100 per cent of their business activities had changed or reduced due to the pandemic. Agents also reported experiencing a reduction of staff, closed branches and transitioning to fully remote operations.
ENZ-supported webinars, online and hybrid events were most valuable to agents, followed closely by digital collateral and marketing material, support for student-facing activities, B2B events with education providers and training.
On training needs, 60 per cent of agents surveyed said that they would like to receive training on student visa application processes, 50 per cent were keen on hearing about New Zealand education providers and their offering, while 40 per cent were keen for more professional development training.
Videos, templates (including banners and PowerPoint presentations), student testimonials and brochures were reported to be the marketing tools that agents find most useful.
ENZ’s Manager – Education Agents, Geneviève Rousseau Cung, says the survey is a key component of ENZ’s agent engagement plan as part of the Government’s Recovery Plan for International Education.
“Insights from the survey will allow ENZ to develop activities, tailored communications and training initiatives that are best aligned with agent needs, which in turn, will also inform and result in better outcomes for education providers.
“Seeing how the agent engagement plan is linked closely to the longer-term recovery of international education, it is crucial that we check in with our agents on a regular basis,” Geneviève says.
The current plan has three areas of focus – supporting the ENZ Recognised Agencies Activity Fund in New Zealand and offshore with marketing initiatives, driving the agent engagement plan through a range of initiatives, and ongoing recognition of the role of education agents.

NZIEC KI TUA commits to CANIE Accord
This will see the conference commit to taking urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and makes the conference part of a global network of international educators working toward that goal.
NZIEC KI TUA’s commitment to becoming a signatory to the CANIE Accord was announced at the closing plenary of NZIEC KI TUA 2023. Additionally, a piece of artwork created by the delegates during the two-day conference, demonstrating the sector’s commitment towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, was presented to CANIE Oceania President Ainslie Moore and co-founder and a global board member of CANIE Dr Pii-Tuulia Nikula.
Signing the CANIE Accord means NZIEC KI TUA is committed to actions such as replacing printing and shipping marketing materials with digital marketing technologies, account for greenhouse gas emissions from attendees, and advocate for accelerated climate action within Signatory’s own organisation and with other stakeholders within their sphere of influence.

ENZ highlights international students' contributions to New Zealand in comments to immigration settings inquiry
International students coming to New Zealand support the achievement of the Government's broader goals and objectives while contributing to an important export industry. This is one of the key messages from Education New Zealand's submission to the Productivity Commission's inquiry into immigration settings.
In the submission, ENZ says that international students should not be characterised as coming to New Zealand to seek employment, invest or run a business. Rather, international students are motivated by different drivers in deciding whether to come to New Zealand, and are different to other temporary migrants included in the scope of the inquiry.
International students bring foreign exchange to New Zealand to fund their studies and living costs, which contributes to New Zealand's economic development. The submission also discusses the broad benefits international students deliver for New Zealand, including regional development, research output, and strengthened bilateral relationships with other countries.

Meet our Korea video competition winners
In a 60-second video, students were asked to share their aspirations for studying in New Zealand, including references to the programme they have selected.
Cecily Lin, ENZ’s Regional Lead, North Asia, said the standard of entries was impressive, as was the level of support agents provided their students.
“It’s encouraging to see agents teaming up with students to enter the competition, and help them achieve their goal of studying in New Zealand,” said Cecily.
“As this was the first time we ran the competition, we were unsure of how much interest we’d have – but we were pleasantly surprised when the videos started flooding in.”
The winning students and agents will be presented with their awards at a ceremony hosted by Clare Fearnley, New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, at her residence in Seoul on Friday, 17 February. The winners’ videos will be screened at the event.
The student winners are:

Overall: Seoyeon Nam (video), who will receive tuition fees up to $8,000 to study at Macleans College, Auckland.

School category: Sohyune Shin (video) and Sumin Nam (video), who will each receive tuition fees up to $6,000 and will study in Auckland at Belmont Intermediate School and St. Mary’s College, respectively.

English language category: Jiwan Park (video) and HyeJin Kim (video), who will each receive tuition fees up to $5,000. Both of them will study at the Dominion English School, Auckland.
The agent winners are:

HJ Global Education, which supported Seoyeon Nam, the overall winner

Uhak K, which encouraged 16 students to enter – more than any other agent

SIS International Education, which encouraged 11 students to enter

Prime, which encouraged eight students to enter.
The prize for the winning agents is an invitation to the familiarisation trip to New Zealand (or flights between Korea and New Zealand).
