Workshop 1: Students’ view from their window travelling along the digital freeway

Technology is changing the way education providers engage with potential students. Placing you in the driver’s seat on the digital freeway, you will experience first-hand what international students see as they race toward their destination. As with any road trip, there are detours, attractions and temptations that can change the direction.

This workshop will use a segmentation model to identify what tools are available and what skills are required, and give examples of how education providers, at various stages of digital maturity, can leverage them for success.

Target audience: Participants involved in international strategy, marketing, recruitment and admissions.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify how your organisation is segmented and what tools are appropriate
    • Gain exposure to example initiatives that best-practice providers have used to improve their student recruitment efficiency
    • Connect with other practitioners about their experiences and identify opportunities for further exploration.

Workshop 2: Beyond the great firewall: social media in China

Coming to grips with digital and social media in China is no easy task. Between VPNs, firewalls and the influx of local alternative platforms, it can be a difficult market to gain cut-through.

This workshop will empower participants to get beyond the great firewall and embrace digital and social media platforms in China. It will showcase best practice case studies and how best to engage prospective students.

Target audience: Marketing and recruitment professionals and student services staff. It is best suited to those who already have some knowledge of Chinese social media.

    Outcomes:

    • Learn how to incorporate Chinese social media into your wider recruitment strategy
    • Gain an understanding of the financial input required
    • Learn how to integrate your campaigns with agents.

These workshops will be available in:

    Christchurch – 11 September 2018
Venue: ChristchurchNZ, Level 3, 101 Cashel Street

    Wellington – 12 September 2018
Venue: ENZ, Level 5 Lambton House, 160 Lambton Quay

    Auckland – 13 September 2018
Venue: ATEED, Level 8, 139 Quay St, Auckland

Workshop 1 will run in the mornings from 9am-12:30pm, followed by Workshop 2 from 1:30pm- 5:00pm.

The registration fee for a single workshop is $375, or you can register for both workshops for $500.

These workshops follow a series of well-reviewed workshops delivered by HECG across New Zealand earlier this year.

    Feedback from previous HECG workshops:

"This is the most useful workshop I have attended in a long time. I will be able to take back a lot of ideas that can be applied at my institution. Very keen to delve deeper into some of the topics further. Great presenters!"

  • Join the NZISA Roadshow – happening now!

The Roadshow is an opportunity to welcome students who have recently arrived from their home countries and provide them with in-person networking opportunities.

A range of guest speakers will address each event, sharing their experiences and insights. Students will be able to connect with the guest speakers, international student support staff, as well as with each other.

Many agencies and organisations will also be present at Roadshow events, including Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao.

The first roadshow event took place in Christchurch last week, while the second event starts at 5pm TODAY in Dunedin:

    Christchurch 16 September 2022

    Dunedin 22 September 2022

    Auckland 29 September 2022

    Wellington 6 October 2022

    NZISA President Vikram Selvaraj

NZISA President Vikram Selvaraj says this is a very special opportunity.

“Starting with Christchurch, where I’m based, was a great feeling for me personally. The idea for the Roadshow was so students could rebuild confidence, connect with other students and hear about the support that’s available.

The panel discussion in Christchurch included a range of speakers with an interest in international education.

“Students who attended felt inspired by the panel discussion, and we are hoping that we will have this event again next year.

“We’re looking forward to the next three Roadshow locations and connecting with many more international students.”

Students can find more details and sign up to attend the events through the NZISA Facebook page.

  • International students learn how to crack job interviews

The ISA members have attended monthly meetings with the police throughout 2016, as part of an Ambassador programme designed to build awareness of crime prevention methods for students.

Jessica Phuang, Auckland City District NZ Police Asian Liaison Coordinator, said the mock job interviews were set up to show appreciation for the students’ involvement in the programme, as many of them will soon be graduating and searching for jobs.

“Some students were taken aback, especially with problem-solving questions which are not common practice in their own countries,” said Phuang.

The mock interviews were set up in the style of speed-dating, with Auckland Presbyterian Church generously lending its hall for the event.

ISA 4 26 Oct 2016Interviewers included school providers, church members, community volunteers, and police Inspectors.

Each ISA member was interviewed for eight minutes, followed by two minutes of feedback on their answers, their CV and body language – before moving on to the next interviewer.

Common feedback from interviewers was that students had a tendency to expose their weaknesses, a cultural practice to demonstrate modesty, Phuang said.

“The interviewers encouraged the students to share their strengths, and demonstrated how to do this without being seen as ‘blowing their own trumpet’.”

The ISA programme is an Auckland-based police initiative that raises issues connected with safety for international students. The initiative was also launched in Wellington in September.

  • Thailand gearing up for popular education expo

TIECA is Thailand’s peak body of educational consultants, and aims to help raise standards of practice and services for both students and international institutions. They currently have some 70 members actively working in the education area.

Jaruwan Pongjaruwat, ENZ’s Programme Manager – Thailand, says the successful history of the expo, combined with the sheer number of attendees this year, makes it a key event that New Zealand institutions shouldn’t miss.

“Last year, we had about five New Zealand providers join the fair, and it would be great to have even more this time. It’s a fantastic opportunity for providers to interact with students and agents face-to-face and get their foot in the door.”

At the fair, institutions can network with TIECA agents and discuss possibilities for working together. There will also be seminars throughout the expo to raise awareness of institutions and increase student enrolment. For students interested in studying abroad, the expo will provide access to the TIECA member directory and other materials to support their decision making process.

The expo will focus on all areas of study including language schools, high schools and universities, with participants from educational institutions in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Malaysia, the United States and many other countries.

The TIECA expo has been promoted extensively online, and is inviting online celebrity students to join in and entice more students along.

To get involved, download and complete an application form from Booth Booking Form and submit to manager@tieca.com

  • Creative rangatahi showcased at the New Zealand Youth Film Festival

Seventeen-year-old Jaeyun Han, an international student at Newlands College, Wellington, bagged the award for Best International Student Film. Han, from Korea, won the award for his film ‘Him’ - a dark tale of jealousy, obsession, and unrequited love.

Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) sponsored the Best International Student Film category of the awards, with ENZ General Manager Sector Services Sahinde Pala presenting the winner’s award.

    “We warmly congratulate Jaeyun.

“ENZ is pleased to support the International Student Film award and the film festival for the wonderful platform they offer young people to share their stories and collaborate. The festival is a great way to showcase what New Zealand offers as a film and creative study destination, and ultimately helps grow connections between international students and New Zealanders,” Sahinde said.

“I was blown away by the talent of all the students involved, they will have bright careers if they choose to enter the film industry. Jaeyun’s storyline, coupled with sophisticated editing and camerawork, made for a gripping and unforgettable film.”

Jaeyun was one of three final nominees, all of whom were invited to an industry experience day exploring TVNZ, Department of Post and AUT last week, ahead of the awards.

The competition was judged by leaders in the industry. Marvel Studios Director of Technology Katie Hinsen, Weta Digital Visual Effects Associate Producer Jeremy Hollis, and Professor Welby Ings from AUT made the final decisions.

“A teacher at school encouraged me to enter the festival and I didn’t think I had a chance of winning. This is such a surprise and an honour,” Jaeyun said.

He received a $500 cash prize and mentorship session with New Zealand cinematographer Phillip A.T Smith, who has worked on notable films such as ‘Mad Max Fury Road’, ‘Dune’ and ‘District 9’.
