• Supporting university recruitment and raising New Zealand’s profile in Viet Nam

  Building on the programme first introduced in 2025, NZUA 2026 is larger and more flexible. It continues to serve as a key tool for student recruitment and for building long-term connections in Viet Nam. 
   
  In 2026, there are 15 scholarships available, each worth NZD $15,000 for the first year of undergraduate study. The scholarships are offered at six New Zealand universities: University of Auckland, University of Waikato, Massey University, Lincoln University, University of Canterbury and University of Otago. The awards help universities connect with high‑achieving Vietnamese students for whom receiving a scholarship is both a major achievement and a source of pride. 
   
  The programme was first introduced following Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s visit to Viet Nam in 2025. It recognises students’ academic achievement, creativity and leadership, while showcasing the strengths of New Zealand’s university system. 
   
  A key feature of NZUA is that students can combine the award with other university scholarships (depending on each university’s rules). This helps make studying in New Zealand more affordable and strengthens New Zealand’s competitiveness in attracting undergraduate students. 
   
  The 2026 programme offers greater flexibility in entry requirements while maintaining strong academic standards. Applications are submitted online and require academic documents, an offer of place from a New Zealand university, and a short video introducing the student and their goals. 
   
  The awards have already generated strong visibility for New Zealand education, with coverage in major Vietnamese media. This helps reinforce New Zealand’s reputation among students, parents and education agents. 
   
  Applications are open until 12 July 2026. The successful applicants will be announced in early September followed by an awards ceremony in October.  
   
  Through NZUA, ENZ continues to work closely with New Zealand universities to build long‑term engagement in Viet Nam, support sustainable growth in student enrolments, and align scholarships with wider international education and brand goals.

• Cohort 4 students arriving

  Andy Walker, Business Development Manager at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao, says the nomination process for Cohort 4 has now closed. 

  “We recently made a final reallocation of unused places to providers from across the sector, who had demonstrated they have travel-ready students.  

  “Students whose nominations have been confirmed are encouraged to submit their Request for Travel application to Immigration New Zealand as soon as possible. Immigration New Zealand have advised that as at 21 June, 4,709 RFTs had been approved and 1,862 student visa applications granted. 

  “We’ve worked very closely with the Ministry of Education and collaborated with Immigration New Zealand throughout this process. We have particularly valued the partnership with education providers across the sector to successfully implement the cohort,” Andy says. 

  “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to bring back these international students sooner than would otherwise have been possible. International students bring a wealth of social, cultural and economic benefits, and we’re all looking forward to welcoming them back to New Zealand.”

• Digital masterclass a runaway success

  Two New Zealand academics were among the speakers showcasing the latest technological solutions to revolutionise education at this second SEAMEO – New Zealand masterclass.  

  Professor Richard Green from the Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury, who also co-chairs the NZ AI Researchers Association, presented on “AI is Revolutionising Sustainability, Food and Biosecurity”. Dr Suranga Nanayakkara, Associate Professor at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, University of Auckland, presented on “Kiwrious: Keeping Kiwi Kids Curious”. The other two keynote speakers were from National Institute of Education, Singapore, and Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. 

  The event was broadcast on SEAMEO Secretariat YouTube Channel and targeted policy-makers, government officials, educators, teachers, lecturers at TVET institutions and universities in Southeast Asia and beyond.  

  “The high level of interest in this event reflects the changes that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused in the way we live, work and learn,” said ENZ’s Regional Director, Asia, Ben Burrowes.  

  “A huge part of the attraction of a New Zealand education has been our world-class teaching and learning environment. We have been focusing on teaching 21st century skills within our national education strategy. This includes soft skills enabling our students to become critical, creative and independent learners. Our use of digital technology in the classrooms is also widely recognised and remains a huge focus in our school and tertiary curriculum.  

  “This second Master Class gave teachers and educators in the Southeast Asia region an opportunity to learn more about what a New Zealand education can offer, and broaden their viewpoints on the technological disruptions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.”    

  Officially admitted as an Associate Member Country in 1973, New Zealand's co-operative relations with SEAMEO include scholarships and provision of experts for SEAMEO Regional Centres. The first SEAMEO-New Zealand masterclass on “Education Technology and Digital Security” was held in September 2021.
