Promoting a New Zealand education experience in Guangzhou
General managers and directors from 25 education and tourism agencies attended a study tour development workshop on 15 August 2022, to identify and develop potential opportunities for New Zealand as a study tour destination for Chinese families.
Workshop participants discussed opportunities to develop study tours to New Zealand for Chinese families.
Several New Zealand education providers also participated, and the workshop reflected a strong collaborative effort by Tourism New Zealand and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Education agents met with representatives of New Zealand institutions at the Guangzhou workshop.
NZ Inc agencies again worked together to deliver a successful workshop for more than 50 education agents in Guangzhou later the same day. Representatives from 11 New Zealand education providers gave presentations and made the most of the opportunity to engage one-on-one with the education agents in a ‘speed dating’ format.
“Guangzhou is an important education partner for New Zealand,” says Felix Ye, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager who is based there. “It’s important for us to engage directly with key people in the sector, to raise the profile of New Zealand education given the full resumption of visa processing this month.
“We took the opportunity to emphasise New Zealand’s commitment to providing quality education, supporting student wellbeing, and encouraging global citizenship, in line with the refreshed New Zealand International Education Strategy.”

Study Abroad NZ schools programme launched in US
ENZ Business Development Manager Mary Camp says this is a pilot project to test the waters in the US market.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with AFS for this pilot – they are a trusted organisation with a long history of matching US students with life-changing education experiences.
“New Zealand schools have much to offer US students looking for a high-quality study abroad experience to give them a competitive advantage in the college application process.”
The programme includes nine New Zealand schools, each offering themed programmes for one semester in the fields of environmental studies, Māori culture, the arts, outdoor education and leadership.
Mary is hoping to see some more US students coming through in 2019 as a result of the pilot.
“Opening up new markets for the school sector will help us achieve sustainable growth, which of course is a focus of the International Education Strategy.
“If the pilot is successful, we’ll look to roll it out to more New Zealand schools.”

The schools involved are Rangitoto College, Western Springs College, Western Heights High School, Aotea College, Papanui High School, Hillmorton High School, Whanganui High School, Whakatane High School and Te Puke High School.

Launching Te Pūkenga internationally
The series began in late May 2022 with the launch of its strategy by Education Minister Chris Hipkins at NAFSA. Since then, Te Pūkenga has continued working with Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), to introduce Te Pūkenga to offshore education agents and other key international stakeholders, building on existing events whenever possible.
The establishment of Te Pūkenga, and the opportunities presented by its size and scale have been a key focus at these events. Te Pūkenga is now the largest tertiary provider in New Zealand, and the 35th largest in the world. The events have also been a great way to bring partners together, to reconnect and to acknowledge the tough years that all have recently endured.
Te Pūkenga emphasised that its size and scale together with having a single national brand enable it to act as one, to invest strategically, and to communicate effectively and deliberately the quality of its applied education delivery on the global stage – something all partners were clearly excited about hearing. It is striving to achieve a balanced portfolio of inbound, outbound, online, offshore and work-based education delivery.
A special shout out to ENZ’s international teams that assisted Te Pūkenga on the events and worked with other NZ Inc agencies, particularly where ENZ events weren’t planned. These included hosting events at the New Zealand High Commission in India and the New Zealand Embassies in the Philippines and Japan.
To sum up with a quote from the Philippines’ launch event ‘Ko te pae tawhiti whāia kia tata, ko te pae tata whakamaua kia tina / Seek out distant horizons and celebrate those you have attained’.

Wellington awards recognise inspiring students
This year’s awardees came from intermediate, secondary and tertiary levels, and included the founder of a bilingual tutoring programme for international students, the founder of the Asian English-Speaking Club at Victoria University of Wellington and the official pianist at the 44th International Viola Congress.
They were selected for a range of achievements from academic excellence, community engagement, to leadership and sport, with each winner receiving a trophy, certificate and tickets to a Wellington experience.
MP Paul Eagle, WREDA CEO Lance Walker and WREDA’s Talent, Skills and Education Manager, Brook Pannell, were on hand at the ceremony, alongside a group from Wainuiomata High School and Kuranui College who performed Kapa Haka for the guests.
Brook said he was thrilled to be on hand at the ceremony to acknowledge the achievements made by some of Wellington’s young talent.
“International students make a powerful impact in their communities, and these awards reflect the great contributions they make in Wellington.
“It’s a unique, modern and compact city where international students can feel at home, gain life skills in a safe city, and make friends.”
Chinese international student Benjamin Lin, 18, received a Leadership Award for his achievements. As the youngest ‘authorised’ writer in his home country, he’s published two books and opened a writing school to raise money to study at Wellington High School.
“Thanks to my father I loved reading and writing. My teacher at the time encouraged me to publish some of my poetry when I was around 10 in the form of a book. People really liked my work and it gave me the confidence to keep going,” says Benjamin.
In 2015, Benjamin decided to progress his education in Wellington, and settled on Wellington High School. He funded his international study by tutoring students in writing.
“I wanted to come to Wellington because it’s a smaller, modern city where I could improve my English.
“In Wellington, I’ve appreciated having more time with my teachers and working on my English,” says Benjamin.
