  • ISANA - Enhancing international student experiences

    The ISANA New Zealand Annual Conference held at AUT University in Tāmaki Makaurau last month provided the perfect forum to address the challenges of strengthening capability and ensuring sustainability as the sector addresses ways in which to grow international education. 

    A key feature of the conference was the presentation of a new online ‘Capability Toolkit’ - a collaboration between ISANA NZ and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ). Developed as a resource for education practitioners, the toolkit presents strategies, tools, tips, guidelines, case studies, scenarios and more to assist with every facet of engagement with international learners.  

    ENZ’s General Manager Sector Services, Sahinde Pala, said that the conference provided a great opportunity to reconnect face-to-face with professional colleagues.  

    “We all enjoyed the opportunity to exchange experiences and hear from frontline practitioners how the rebuild of the sector is going from their perspective. It was a great opportunity to connect with those relatively new to the sector and let them know the role of ENZ and the resources available to assist them in their role.”  

    “It was also encouraging to see our industry coming together to collectively focus on improving our services for students. The Capability Toolkit is an important, practical resource that will assist education practitioners provide even better support for our international learners.” 

    The Capability Toolkit provides links to resources in the following areas: 

    1. Wraparound tailored support for international students  
    2. Critical incident management for international students 
    3. Innovative leadership in international education 
    4. Intercultural competence in educational contexts 
    5. Student experience information for agents. 

    ENZ is continuing to work with ISANA to further develop the Capability Toolkit and other content will be added over time. In the meantime, anyone who has not had a chance to look at the toolkit, can explore this further on ISANA NZ’s website here.

  • Study Abroad NZ schools programme launched in US

    ENZ Business Development Manager Mary Camp says this is a pilot project to test the waters in the US market.

    “We’re thrilled to be partnering with AFS for this pilot – they are a trusted organisation with a long history of matching US students with life-changing education experiences.

    “New Zealand schools have much to offer US students looking for a high-quality study abroad experience to give them a competitive advantage in the college application process.”

    The programme includes nine New Zealand schools, each offering themed programmes for one semester in the fields of environmental studies, Māori culture, the arts, outdoor education and leadership.

    Mary is hoping to see some more US students coming through in 2019 as a result of the pilot.

    “Opening up new markets for the school sector will help us achieve sustainable growth, which of course is a focus of the International Education Strategy

    “If the pilot is successful, we’ll look to roll it out to more New Zealand schools.”

    The schools involved are Rangitoto College, Western Springs College, Western Heights High School, Aotea College, Papanui High School, Hillmorton High School, Whanganui High School, Whakatane High School and Te Puke High School.

  • 2017 ISB results: Universities and ITPs

    The ISB is a global study that investigates the decision making, expectations and experiences of international students including their arrival experience, the support they receive from their education provider, the quality of education provided, and their living experience in country.

    Universities sector

    Among the 5,487 international students surveyed from six New Zealand universities, 90 percent were satisfied with their institution experience overall. This is the same percentage as the last wave of the study in 2015 and in line with the global benchmark.

    International students in New Zealand placed higher importance on several work- and visa-related factors than the global average: 77% considered ease of getting a visa to study as important (8% above the global average), 65% considered opportunities for permanent residence as important (6% above the global average) and 73% considered opportunities to work while studying as important (5% above the global average).

    Of the four major components of the survey, universities outperformed the global benchmark on three dimensions:

    And 81% international students in New Zealand would recommend their university to others, which is slightly lower (-2%) than international students globally.

    ITP sector

    Some 3,470 international students from 13 New Zealand ITPs were surveyed, and overall satisfaction remains high at 89%, similar to the proportion in 2015 (+1%) and in line with the global benchmark.

    International students who come to New Zealand ITPs place relatively high importance on employment and employability factors both during and after study: opportunities for permanent residence were rated 12% above the global benchmark, ease of getting a visa and opportunities to work while studying were both 11% above the global benchmark and opportunities for full-time work following their studies was 10% above the global benchmark.

    Of the four major components of the survey, ITPs outperformed the global benchmark on three dimensions:

    Despite high satisfaction, students’ likelihood to recommend their institution to others has fallen to 76%. This is 5% below the global benchmark and a 3% fall since 2015, continuing the downward trend from 82% in 2013.

    Each participating education provider in the ISB survey receives a customised report based on their own international student survey results, which they can use to make informed decisions to enhance the student experience and drive successful recruitment and marketing strategies.

    ENZ, who funds the survey, receives overall aggregate results for each education sector but does not have access to individual provider results.

    “Miriama did such a great job emceeing last year’s conference that we’re delighted to have her return to NZIEC 2017,” says Sam Mackay, ENZ Strategic Projects Manager.

    Miriama is presenter of TVNZ1’s flagship current affairs programme, Sunday, co-presents current affairs programme Marae, is a regular 1NEWS newsreader and is the host on TVNZ1’s new lifestyle programme, Kiwi Living.

    “I learned so much from NZIEC 2016 that I’m coming back for more!” says Miriama.

    “I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again at this year's conference.”

    “Miriama will be joining us for the duration of conference and will bring her considerable interviewing talents to several breakout sessions,” says Sam.

    “I’m sure Miriama will keep our panel participants on their toes!”

    The 26th New Zealand International Education Conference and Expo will be held at the SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland on 22 and 23 August 2017. Registrations will open in May.

  • US roadshow sparks interest in New Zealand universities

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), together with Victoria University of Wellington, Lincoln University, the University of Auckland, and the University of Otago recently completed a successful tour of high schools across Hawaii. The aim? To inspire local students to think of New Zealand not just as a beautiful place to visit, but as a world-class place to study. 

    Across a week-long series of classroom presentations, university fairs, and dedicated sessions for school counsellors, the New Zealand delegation engaged directly with more than 300 students and families and connected with 25 high school counsellors.

    Director of College Counseling at Le Jardin Academy, Scott Liedtke, said face-to-face conversations are powerful.

    “When New Zealand educators come to Hawaii, it helps demystify studying overseas. Students and families can ask questions directly about cost, safety and credit transfer, and hear answers from the source,” he said.

    ENZ also partnered with the New Zealand Consulate in Hawaii to host two events for local school counsellors. A breakfast at the New Zealand Chancery and a brunch at the Consul General’s residence allowed for deeper discussions and relationship-building within the education community.

    Dan Cairns, Administration Manager at the New Zealand Consulate, described the events as more than just informational.

    “Each gathering was designed to reflect different kaupapa, from celebrating international education to acknowledging our shared Polynesian connections – these moments created space to build people-to-people ties that go far beyond the classroom,” he said.

    The impact of the roadshow was immediate. Each of the attending universities reported that at least two students had begun applications to study in New Zealand.

    Director of Engagement, North America, DuBois Jennings said for ENZ, the roadshow represents a step towards long-term engagement in a region with shared cultural values.

    “The clear appetite for New Zealand study options, shows there is real value in continuing and expanding this mahi,” he said.

    Scott Liedtke echoed that sentiment. “New Zealand feels like a home away from home for many of our students. With its island lifestyle, cultural familiarity, and globally recognised education, it’s a natural fit,” he said.

    “Here in Hawaii, we say the ‘coconut wireless’ — word of mouth — is strong. Once a few students head to New Zealand and love it, that news spreads fast,” Scott added.
