• ENZ announces organisation changes

  The changes are a reflection of the significant growth within the industry and change in focus that ENZ has experienced since its establishment in 2011, and in particular to suggestions included in the Performance Improvement Framework (PIF) completed early this year.

  The main changes are outlined below.

  • A flatter senior leadership structure with the three Regional Directors now reporting directly to Chief Executive Grant McPherson, and disestablishment of the GM International role. The three Regional Directors are: Lisa Futschek, Regional Director, Americas & Europe, based in Wellington; Alex Grace, Regional Director China & North Asia, based in Beijing; and John Laxon, Regional Director India, SE Asia & Middle East, based in Dubai.
  • Creation of a new GM Strategy & Insight role to strengthen our market intelligence and analytics, and future thinking capability.
  • The current Marketing and Channels Team will be renamed Student Marketing, and will have primary responsibility for leading and managing our student-focused activities. This team will include a new Director of Student Experience role based in Auckland.

  These changes are an important step in ENZ’s future, and stakeholders can expect to see further adjustments as we evolve.

• Tony Gray appointed to ENZ Board

  

  Gray will start his Board appointment on 1 November. He has vast experience in the education sector, in a career spanning 37 years both here and in the United Kingdom. Gray is currently Chief Executive of the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust. 

  Gray’s focus was on vocational education after migrating to New Zealand in 2003. In his most recent role in the sector, Gray was Chief Executive at Ara Institute of Canterbury between 2017 and 2021, and Chief Executive at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) prior. 

  Under Tony’s leadership, NMIT became a leading educator for regional primary industries. He has a strong interest in growth and innovation, helping to establish INNOVATE – a regional entrepreneur activator that supports, nurtures and grows businesses in the region.  

  In this time at Ara, Tony led his organisation through the Reform of Vocational Education and continued his interest in supporting innovation – leading the establishment of Te Ohaka, a Centre for Growth and Innovation. Tony also grew Ara’s involvement in the Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct - a collaboration with Te Whatu Ora Waitaha, University of Canterbury, University of Otago and Ngāi Tahu. 

  In 2023, Tony was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to education. 

• Registrations open: NZ Vocational Education and Training Research Forum

  The NZ Vocational Education and Training Research Forum (NZVETRF) is a multi-sector opportunity for discussing ‘what works’ in vocational education. In 2020, the forum will be delivered fully online, including international keynotes, and a curated programme of breakout sessions, along with interest based ‘hangouts’ and expert sessions.

  The new partnership with Skills International extends the reach of the forum to an international network, to learn from and contribute to global developments in VET to support the COVID-19 recovery efforts.

  CEO of The Skills Organisation, Garry Fissenden, says vocational education and training will be a critical component of the response to the employment, economic, and social shocks caused by COVID-19 around the world. He says:

  “With New Zealand’s vocational education sector embarking on a major reform, now more than ever is a time to come together to share evidence and capability of how vocational education and training can support skills and productivity, and wider wellbeing.”
