Indigenous Malyasian students learn about Te Ao Māori
Scholastica Philip, who is of Kadazan descent, together with Diana Bah Said and Norazah Din, both of Semai ethnicity, have been studying the Te Ao Māori and Sustainability course on the Mission New Zealand online platform.
All three say they gained a great deal from the short course, which included an introduction to biculturalism, and the five stages of the design thinking process.
“Biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand is fascinating,” Norazah said. “We learned about Māori settling in New Zealand, and I really want to experience their culture and daily life if I have the chance in the future.”
Scholastica noticed some common themes around sustainability in Te Ao Māori, and the importance of nature and food in her Kadazan culture, which is from East Malaysia.
“We take care of nature as we take care of humans - we need to take care of all living things.
“There is an ancient story for Kadazan people about Huminodun, a very beautiful woman who sacrificed herself to create food and bring rain to stop the cursed drought season for her people. This story is about how closely we are connected with nature.
“We learned on the course that Māori and non-Māori are working together in New Zealand to achieve a sustainable ecological system – I love the concept,” Scholastica said.
Norazah and Diana also noted how important trees and rivers are in their distinctive Semai culture, which is based in North Malaysia.
“We have a very strong connection with nature - as much as we respect each other,” Diana said.

Norazah and Diana are in their second year of study at Universiti Malaya, and Scholastica is in her third year.

Ben Burrowes, Regional Director Asia for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) says the Whakatipu Scholarships are funded by ENZ and Universiti Malaya.
“We are aiming to empower talented young indigenous students, support them with learning and exchange opportunities, and encourage knowledge sharing.

Techweek 2020: a festival of innovation
Techweek is the premier event of the NZ Tech Alliance, attracting 49,000 people across New Zealand last year.
This year’s festival comes at a critical time for the international education sector as institutions look to diversify their international education with the help of technology and the internet.
Anyone can join up to the virtual events taking place from 27 July-2 August.

Techweek TV
ENZ has secured a slot on TechweekTV on a panel entitled Physically distant, virtually connected; recreating the New Zealand education experience online, streaming online at 2:30pm on 30 July (NZT).
It will feature ENZ director of platforms and campaigns, Euan Howden, and senior market manager Misa Kitaoka; Jason Mangan, chief technology officer and co-founder of University of Auckland’s lean start up – Connected Experiences; and CRO of Education Perfect, Tim Vaughan.
They’ll explore how to recreate the New Zealand education experience in a COVID-19 environment. The panel will be chaired by director of ATEED, MIT and Unitec Ziena Jalil. Ziena sits on the Boards of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), Unitec, and the Cancer Society Auckland Northland.
EdTechNZ Showcase
EdTechNZ will present a showcase of 24 New Zealand companies. In a series of four Zoom webinars, each company take 10 minutes to show how their products and services are changing the world and take questions from the webinar audience.
The variety of NZ companies innovating to improve educational outcomes is impressive, ranging from primary through post-tertiary, with games, infrastructure, AI, and bringing people closer together all playing a role.
ENZ business development manager Annabel Robertson will be chairing the sessions along with other EdtechNZ Board members.
Panel discussion
ENZ director of partnerships and channels Dan Smidt will be chairing a panel discussion on the role of technology in delivering enhanced customer experiences, cross-sector connections, and seamless pathways for international students, education agents and education providers.
The panel will feature representatives from Enroller, Up Education and JJL Education Consulting.

Latest insights on international education
“As we approach the end of 2022, we have an opportunity to take stock, and importantly look forward to next year, one in which we all hope to welcome increasing numbers of international students back to New Zealand,” says Marie Clark, Director Insights at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ).
“Despite the long period of border closure there has been only slightly altered demand for international study. Our annual brand tracker shows the New Zealand brand is holding a strong position globally.”
ENZ has been closely tracking the beginnings of recovery. As New Zealand's border reopens, the immediate priority is for international education providers to build back their onshore offerings and attract students back to Aotearoa. The content of this issue is focussed on toward data and analysis related to our initial observations of the sector's recovery.

Education consultancy Edified to offer another round of Energiser Grants
Edified is a specialist higher education consultancy that works with educational institutions in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Applications are now open for grants to support students and graduates with a vision and a plan to improve education in their community. A total of three grants are on offer, for a project in each of the following categories:
- To improve any type of education
- To improve education in safety, health or wellbeing
- To improve education for women or about gender equity
EEGs are open to people of any nationality (domestic and international) who are currently studying at, or have graduated in the past five years, from an Australian, New Zealand or UK Higher Education, Vocational or English Language institution (part-time, online and offshore campuses accepted). Your project can be delivered in any country in the world.
