  • Innovative leadership programme funded by PIF proves great success

    The Crusaders partnered with Christchurch-based education provider Boma to develop an engaging online leadership programme sharing the Crusaders Way with rugby coaches for all age levels. The programme draws on rugby legends Scott Robertson, Robbie Deans, Kieran Read and Samuel Whitelock to help participants build a connected and skilful team.  

    The Crusaders chose to collaborate with Boma because of the values alignment between the two organisations, combined with Boma’s expertise in crafting compelling, impactful, scalable online learning experiences.  

    Boma is a recipient of ENZ’s Product Innovation Fund, which assists in the development of programmes that deliver new, meaningful and unique learning experiences from New Zealand, for the world. 

    The funding allowed Boma to embark into a new area and develop the Crusaders pilot programme. Boma already runs events, workshops, and courses, and has worked with leading organisations in Aotearoa and around the world. Some of Boma’s clients include IAG, Meridian Energy, Stuff and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. 

    While fully on-demand online courses have been around for a long time, they typically generate low completion rates. Boma’s approach is different, creating a cohort of learners who move through the programme together, leveraging pre-recorded video with time-sensitive community engagement.  

    Boma founder Kaila Colbin says their unique method delivers extraordinary outcomes. 

    “Our programmes are designed to offer the quality and impact of Stanford, the scalability of Masterclass, and the excitement and shared experience of TED,” she says. 

    Kaila explains that the coaches have the flexibility to complete the course in their own time but have a sense of urgency and accountability because of the community element.  

    The two-week pilot was completed by 114 coaches from 14 countries. It had glowing written feedback and earned a Net Promoter Score, or NPS, of 80%. NPS is a widely used customer satisfaction benchmark in which the potential score ranges from -100 to +100. A positive score is considered good and a score above 50 is considered outstanding. 

    Boma has big plans for the future, growing from rugby leadership to sports leadership to business and general leadership.  

    Registrations are open for the next Crusaders course, which starts on 30 January 2023.

  • ENZ welcomes two new Board members

    The Minister of Education, Hon Erica Stanford, appointed two new members to the Board of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) on 7 July 2025. 

    Sara Brownlie and Prabha Ravi succeed two of ENZ’s long-serving Board members, Dr Linda Sissons and Lyn Provost. 

    Read on to learn more about the wealth of experience the new Board members bring to the role. 

    Sara Brownlie  

    Sara Brownlie is a chartered accountant and chartered director with strong risk and financial management and financial planning knowledge.  

    She has worked in the public sector for most of her career in senior financial roles including Department of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Justice and at Treasury where she was also Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and for the Public Services Commission. This followed early career at Deloitte and Unilever.

    Sara now provides specialist strategic financial and project/programme advisory services through her company Fargher Woods Ltd.   

    Sara is a board member with Catalyst.net and is the Crown appointed Deputy Chair and Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee of the Research Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ).  

    She is also an independent member of Enable New Zealand Finance, Risk and Audit Committee, and holds a similar role with the Upper Hutt City Council's Risk and Assurance Committee. 

    Prabha Ravi QSM, JP 

    Prabha Ravi QSM, JP is an experienced governance leader and international education specialist with over 25 years in senior management roles, including International Director at Waiariki Institute of Technology and YMCA Central, and Senior Manager at Education New Zealand. She has represented New Zealand in more than 47 countries, generating millions in export education earnings and building strong global partnerships. 

    With nearly 20 years of governance experience across the arts, sports, education, health, community, and public sectors, Prabha serves on several boards, including the Wellington/Wairarapa Lotteries Committee. 

    She is also the founder and director of Natraj School of Dance, a leading Indian classical dance institution in Wellington for over 25 years, and an award-winning actor. Her contributions to education, arts, governance, and ethnic communities have been recognised with multiple honours, including the Queen’s Service Medal in 2017.

  • Indonesian students meet the KIWI Challenge

    Now in its third year, this annual student entrepreneurship competition asks students from schools across Java and Kalimantan to provide innovative ideas or solutions, based on a given theme. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) organises the competition in collaboration with Kopi Tuli (Deaf Cafe), a deaf community in Jakarta. 

    This year, ENZ has partnered with Massey University, which chose the theme of sustainable tourism. 

    The school groups will submit videos to a judging panel made up of Massey University academics and ENZ representatives. Submissions will be reviewed by the panel and finalists selected. The students will then be supported through a number of workshops and mentoring by the Massey University academics.  

    This mentoring will prepare finalists for their final pitch in the following weeks. After the final pitches are reviewed, the top three groups will be awarded vouchers worth IDR 2,000,000 – 10,000,000 and offered the opportunity to take part in virtual internships provided by Massey University.  

    Registrations and initial video submissions for KIWI Challenge 2022 have now closed and are currently being assessed by the panel. We received 36 videos from 18 schools across Indonesia – and they are competing to secure a place in the Top 5 finalists.  

    To date, ENZ has engaged more than 1,200 Indonesian students through the programme and each year has showcased a New Zealand university and a particular theme. Previous university partners were Lincoln University (Agribusiness) and the University of Canterbury (Education Technology).

      

    “Now entering its third year, KIWI Challenge has grown into a unique platform for New Zealand and our universities to remain connected to Indonesian students in a meaningful way. Most importantly, we have worked together to identify themes that resonate with young Indonesians and then matched these with the expertise our New Zealand universities have to offer,” Chris Hipkins said.  

    “This year has seen another shift in topic, with student groups focusing on Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship under the expert guidance of academics from Massey University. With the current challenges facing societies across the globe as a result of climate change, I’m looking forward to the ideas Indonesian students will develop this year in such a meaningful area.”  

    Professor Jan Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of Massey University, was also present at the launch event in Jakarta.  

    “We are honoured to be part of the 2022 KIWI Challenge, and to have the opportunity to inspire Indonesian students to tackle an issue of utmost importance to their homeland - tourism. Massey has many links to Indonesia, particularly through our research partnerships with the University of Mataram. It’s exciting to again be able to showcase our world-class teaching and research on foreign shores. Best of luck to all of the teams taking part in the KIWI Challenge this year.” 

    This year’s KIWI Challenge looks to build on the success of previous years and inspire youth to be engaged in entrepreneurial activities around important social issues, connect students from Indonesia with New Zealand academics and strengthen ties between Indonesia and New Zealand.  

  • PIF Recipient: Connect2NZ

    Connect2NZ aims to show that tertiary education providers can work with government agencies to build a framework for international learners that is innovative, future focused, and learner-centric.     

    Connect2NZ’s target audience is professionals, living outside New Zealand, who are seeking skills development in emerging sectors. Work has been undertaken to determine learner needs and match those with areas where New Zealand is strong. The project will design and deliver micro-learning and short courses which have pathways, allowing these learners to study from a group of courses to achieve their desired career outcomes. Potential topics include technology, leadership, health and wellness, food and agritech, energy, tourism, design and natural hazards. Our goal is to eventually extend our offerings to degree qualifications.  

    "What excites me the most about the Connect2NZ project is the exploration of potential new offshore/online markets. In particular, the global lifelong learner market which is huge and to date not well served by some of the fantastic educational offerings available from the New Zealand Higher Education sector, "

    Some of these courses will be delivered by one provider partner, while others will be jointly designed and delivered. The number of tertiary education providers is expected to grow following consultation with government agencies and community outreach.    

    The pilot project is supported by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ). Through its International Education Product Innovation Fund, ENZ is supporting a range of pilot projects that reimagine how a New Zealand education can engage and inspire international learners and create impact through new delivery modes, approaches and partnerships.

  • New Zealand institutions strengthen ties with Latin American education agencies

    In April, ENZ supported the Study in New Zealand Agent Seminars – an event series organised by Kiwi EdLink, a New Zealand-based organisation that represents education providers across the country.

    New Zealand’s educations offerings for Latin American students were showcased to education agents at the seminars. From English language programmes for children, youth, and adults to short or long-term school studies in New Zealand. 

    The participating institutions from New Zealand were the Kiwi English Academy, Glendowie College and Onslow College. 

    ENZ teams in Santiago and São Paulo hosted networking events at the New Zealand Embassy in Chile and the Consulate in Brazil, inviting selected agents aligned with Kiwi EdLink’s strategic goals in the region.  

    In addition to facilitating these connections, the ENZ team also provided market insights and engaged in conversations about future steps to deepen engagement and opportunities in Latin America’s dynamic education landscape.

    During the event in São Paulo, Director of Kiwi English Academy, Kathryn Herbert, said “This is a moment to reconnect with our Latin American partners so we can better understand how to offer relevant programs to Brazilian students.”  

    The feedback from sector attendees was positive. Director of International Students at Onslow College, Robynne Bloemstein, said that the institution is very excited to reengage with the Latin American market and welcome students from the region into its student body, which already includes 45 international students. 

    It was the first visit to Brazil for the Director of International Students at Glendowie College, Rebecca Johnstone. She said “We love Latin American students—we currently have 47 international students in total, including two Chilean students and a new Brazilian student starting in July. They all contribute greatly to the multicultural environment of our school.”

  • PM mission advances New Zealand and China education relationship

    The New Zealand Education Connect event on 20 June at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing brought together leading Chinese government representatives, institutional partners, education agents, and alumni to strengthen people-to-people links and celebrate collaboration.  

    The event programme was packed, with nine Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed between New Zealand and Chinese counterparts, and another MoU signed between Victoria University of Wellington and Fudan University on 19 June. 

    Providers from across the tertiary education sector signed the MoUs – with Victoria University of Wellington, Unitec, NMIT and UP Education’s University of Auckland International College and New Zealand Tertiary College formalising partnerships. 

    These agreements cover a mix of in-market delivery, joint programmes, and initiatives to grow student mobility between New Zealand and China.  

    This builds on the now over 60 approved joint education programmes and institutes recognised by the China Ministry of Education between New Zealand and Chinese institutions, and other education partnerships across early childhood education, vocational training, higher education, and research areas.  

    The New Zealand Education Connect event had senior leaders officially launching New Zealand’s Country of Honour campaign for the upcoming China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE), China's largest platform for international education, due to take place in October this year.  

    ENZ’s Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, launches the Country of Honour campaign for New Zealand at CACIE alongside Prime Minister Luxon and CEAIE’s Secretary General Jun Yang.

    ENZ Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, said it’s exciting to see advancement of the partnerships New Zealand providers have built with their Chinese counterparts. 

    “We’re eager to see the outcomes of the new agreements formalised at New Zealand Education Connect and look forward to deepening our bilateral ties by leading a delegation to CACIE later this year,” she said.
