  • Strong interest in NZ from Filipino students at the Te Pūkenga Agent Workshop and NZ Study Workshop 2023

    55 education agents representing 27 agencies from across the Philippines attended the one-day workshop on 27 October. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for the four Te Pūkenga representatives, including Bipul Das, Kerry Clarke, Prashanth Nallur Puttaswamy and Richard Cao, to share their most recent updates and developments, including information on Te Pūkenga’s vocational education offerings. 

    ENZ’s Market Manager – Philippines & Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol, supplied an update on ENZ’s activities and showcased the array of tools and resources available to empower education agents in promoting New Zealand as a study destination. Joining the workshop remotely were key figures from Immigration New Zealand. Celia Coombes, Manager of International Education, Dolores Hyde, Senior Advisor for International Education, and Philippa Lee, Immigration Officer, Visa Operations, delivered a comprehensive briefing on student visa applications and post-study work rights.     Bipul Das from Te Pūkenga’s International Team said that it was incredibly valuable to be able to meet face to face with education agents and prospective students in the Philippines. 

    “It was wonderful to see the education agencies are excited to promote New Zealand as the preferred study destination for vocational education and we are grateful for the support from ENZ, our Education Agents and INZ on the work being done in the Philippines market. We will continue to focus on growing our international student population from the Philippines, " said Bipul. 

    Following on from the workshop, ENZ and Te Pūkenga welcomed over 170 visitors to the NZ Study Expo 2023. The event provided a unique platform for attendees to explore the breadth of opportunities in New Zealand including specific courses, scholarships, and post-study opportunities and discuss these personally with the NZ representatives on-hand.

    New Zealand Ambassador His Excellency Peter Kell presided the event and shared his remarks, encouraging Filipinos and their families, to choose New Zealand as a destination to continue their education journey.  

    Ambassador Kell told the audience “This event is more than just a fair; it is a bridge that connects aspirations with opportunities. It is a platform for our Filipino students to explore and embrace new horizons, to acquire skills and knowledge that will empower you to become leaders in your chosen fields.  

    “New Zealand’s education system is often highly regarded and ranked in the world for preparing students for the future. Our education providers often have strong connections to industry and the business community. This facilitates internships, work placements, and real-world experiences for students, preparing them for the workforce,’ he added.  

    ENZ Market Manager – Philippines & Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol, was excited to have had the opportunity to speak face to face with interested students and their families following the pandemic.  

    “There is certainly a lot to be said for being able to explain in-person to prospective students and their families, why they must consider New Zealand as a destination for future study and we were so pleased to see such genuine interest.  

    These events generated dozens of leads which has helped drive a significant increase in in visits and enquiries from Filipino students to the Study with New Zealand website,” added Chortip.

  • Global conference puts spotlight on student employability

    More than 300 delegates from 35-plus countries will attend the conference, which is designed for new and experienced practitioners of academic work placement and experiential education.

    This will be the first time the conference is held in Australia or New Zealand.

    “We see the conference as an important opportunity to broaden our national conversation about employability for both domestic and international students,” said Brett Berquist, University of Auckland Director International.

    “Employability is a key driver for international students choosing New Zealand. It’s also important for the growing number of Kiwis who are starting their ‘OE’ (overseas experience) during their university study. 

    “The GIC is a place for us to think about international mobility and the importance of employability outcomes for all students – as well as to network and learn from each other.”

    A number of New Zealand tertiary providers are participating as well as hosting post-conference partnership visits.

    Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) is the city sponsor for the conference and is moderating a New Zealand employer panel debate “Working with international students”.

    ENZ is the country sponsor and will present new research, “Employer Perceptions of Hiring International Graduates”.

    “We know that students want to have strong employability prospects after they graduate, whether they are back home, staying in New Zealand for some post-study work or in a third country,” said John Goulter, ENZ Acting Chief Executive.

    The conference will cover an introductory track for those new to the field as well as latest research and trends, ideas for scaling up delivery and models for working with internship providers.

    Among the presentations are topics on: “International Exposure at Home and Abroad: Employability gains through internships”; “The Connection Catalyst: Virtual internships for wider access to cultural fluency and employability”; and “Emerging Internship Destinations: Keys for developing employers’ most desired skills in recent graduates”. 

    “The GIC plays an integral part in exploring past, present and future trends,” said Brett. 

    “This year we have an important focus on the employability needs of international students, both in their country of study as well as supporting their return to their home market. This is a particularly important theme for New Zealand and Australian education providers.”

    The conference will be held at the Owen G. Glenn Building, and receptions will be held at the Fale Pasifika, Auckland Town Hall, and the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

    Founded in 1999, previous GIC conferences have been held in the US, Singapore, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Germany, and the Netherlands.

  • ENZ seals exchange deal with Germany for early-career researchers

    DAAD is the world's largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers, and is a key partner for ENZ in Germany.

    Early-career researchers from New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology will be able to take part in the DAAD’s Programmes for Project-Related Personal Exchange (PPP).  In the future, young German researchers will also be able to travel to New Zealand under the programme.

    The programme covers all subject areas and is open to students who are close to completing their doctorate, as well as to academics who completed a doctorate within the last five years.

    ENZ will support the New Zealand institutions involved to fund the costs and living stipend for New Zealand researchers to travel to Germany, while their German counterparts will be funded by the DAAD. ENZ would match the contribution from local institutions to a maximum of NZ$12,500 per year per project. Projects would normally be funded for two years.

    New Zealand-German Academic Partnership Event

    ENZ will host a virtual New Zealand-German academic partnership event on 23 February 2022, from 8:00-9:00 am New Zealand Time (22 February, 20:00-21:00 pm CET). This will be an opportunity for New Zealand and German institutions to learn more about the programme, share their ideas and identify opportunities for joint research projects. The call for proposals opens on 6 April 2022 for the funding period from 2023-2025. Those interested in attending the partnership event can register here.

    The exchange agreement was signed in Berlin on 25 November 2021 and builds on our strong education and science links with Germany. It was one of the key actions arising from a visit to Germany in January 2020 by a delegation from New Zealand’s Centres of Research Excellence, led by ENZ’s Chief Executive Grant McPherson.
