  • Help shape Auckland’s future

    Henry Matthews, International Education Manager at Study Auckland, which is part of Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED), said it was an exciting time for Auckland.

     Auckland is experiencing record numbers of international and domestic visitors choosing it as a destination to study, play, work and invest.

    “When the Auckland Visitor Plan 2021 was first released in 2011, the 10-year aspiration was to grow the annual value of the visitor economy from $5.3 billion in 2011 to over $8 billion by 2021.

    “If current trends continue, we will achieve this target much sooner than expected, given visitor spending is already reaching $7.8 billion a year.”

    At the same time there has been a great deal of change in the international education sector since the original Auckland Visitor Plan was developed, Henry said.

    “With this in mind, the timing is right to work closely with the international education industry to develop a fresh strategic framework for the key components of Auckland’s visitor economy: international education, tourism, major events and business events.

    “We have planned further engagement with partners across Auckland’s destination economy and to develop this growth strategy.

    “The survey is a key step to start this process, so we welcome the international education sector’s ideas and perspectives regarding opportunities to create long-term, sustainable growth.”

    Kia ora koutou,  

    This month, the Government announced the International Education Going for Growth Plan – this is an exciting, positive step forward for international education as we chase a big growth target to double the value of New Zealand international education by 2034.  

    It’s an ambitious target. However, with the strong and steady growth we have seen in international student numbers in 2024, the Growth Plan will help us boost that growth track to make New Zealand the destination of choice for international students.   

    At its heart, the Growth Plan is about striking the right balance between achieving sustainable growth for the sector, while providing our international students with an excellent experience in New Zealand and enabling our communities to understand the broad benefits that international education brings.  

    I am pleased with the work that is underway to progress the plan’s implementation. Over July and early August, ENZ is holding a series of market focused, cross-sector sessions to share market plans for 2025-26. The sessions will provide sector representatives with a topline update on market plans, growth targets, the approach for subsectors, and market activity. 

    I believe these sessions will prove useful in clarifying how ENZ intends to engage with the sector to activate and deliver the plan.  

    And with the way our latest 2024 enrolment numbers have continued their upward surge, we are on the right track to advance towards our growth goals. Our enrolments are now at 72 percent of pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019, with most sub-sectors contributing to this growth.  

    We are also seeing interesting trends in these enrolment numbers across subsectors, level of study and source markets and we look forward to sharing these insights with the sector.     Last week, we said farewell to two of ENZ’s long-serving Board members, Linda Sissons and Lyn Provost, who completed their terms, and welcomed new members Sara Brownlie and Prabha Ravi with a mihi whakatau.  

    Finally, this week, I will be attending The PIE Live Asia Pacific event, where I will be speaking at a ‘New Zealand: Country update and trends’ panel session alongside University of Canterbury Vice-Chancellor Cheryl de la Rey and Deputy Editor of The PIE News UK, Kimberley Martin. 

    The session will discuss how New Zealand is poised for sustainable growth in international education and will cover the New Zealand International Education Going for Growth Plan and its ambitious target to double the value of international education by 2034.

  • EIT signs MOU with Sunway University in Malaysia

    The MOU, signed on 27 May at a ceremony at Sunway University in Selangor, Malaysia, will see the two institutions working together to promote education pathways and short-term student and teacher exchanges.

    New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia, Hunter Nottage, said he welcomed the new collaboration agreement.

    “It’s fantastic to see a New Zealand institution enter into this agreement with a Malaysian university, and I hope this new partnership offers Sunway University students an opportunity to experience a New Zealand education,” Nottage said.

    EIT International Marketing Manager, Helen Kemp, said the MOU would pave the way for collaborations between the two institutions, particularly with art and design qualifications.

    “This is a great opportunity for bringing together New Zealand and Malaysian cultures and ideas that could benefit the design community as a whole,” Kemp said.

    “Sunway students in Malaysia who complete a two-year Diploma in Design will now be able to pathway into the EIT Bachelor of Creative Practice in New Zealand.”

    Market Manager – Malaysia and Philippines, Desiree Lee, said the education relationship between Malaysia and New Zealand has continued to develop over the last 70 years.

    “The first Malaysian students arrived in New Zealand in the 1950s under the Colombo Plan, and they returned home to make a big impact in Malaysia and on the world stage. Since then, the education relationship between the two countries has continued to develop with a steady growth in the number of Malaysian students in New Zealand,” Lee said.

    “International collaborations and academic mobility between New Zealand and Malaysian education institutions are a great way to raise institution profiles but also to strengthen diplomacy and trade links over the long term.”

    The MOU signing was followed by a discussion on possible areas of collaboration between Sunway University’s School of Arts and EIT’s IDEAschool, including short-term student and staff exchanges.

  • Study with New Zealand online launched for adult professional learners

    The Study with New Zealand Online platform – an outcome of the Strategic Recovery Plan for International Education 2020 – is a New Zealand owned and branded platform that offers global learners a new way to engage with a New Zealand education.  

    Study with New Zealand Online has up to 60 courses available from 20 + education providers. 

    ENZ’s General Manager – Sector Engagement, Wendy Kerr, said the pilot learning platform aims to tap into the adult professional learner market. 

    “Our research shows that there is a significant career-oriented, adult learner market that is looking for ways to advance within their current career. Study with New Zealand Online aims to tap into that market and test if there is value in what New Zealand can offer uniquely.  

    “Good examples of courses unique to New Zealand are a short course on sustainability in the wine industry delivered by NMIT | Te Pūkenga. If you are in the wine industry, you clearly know New Zealand wines and our expertise in sustainability. The same goes for an ECE course offered by Te Rito Maioho ECNZ, which showcases New Zealand’s bicultural approach in this field.”  

    Kerr says, “We know how hard the pandemic was on international education. We know this project is about exploring new and different ways to deliver, and new and different audiences for, the New Zealand education experience. The goal is to diversify and build resilience.”  

    Findings from the Study with New Zealand Online pilot will help inform insights and recommendations on how New Zealand’s education sector could transform to a more sustainable future state through the diversification of our international education offerings.
