Planning for the next student visa application peak
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is now entering the next peak of student visa applications.
INZ say they are in a good space to process the predicted volume of student visa applications. As part of planning, they have validated their predicted numbers of applications with the sector.
"Thanks to the sector peak bodies who circulated the survey on our behalf, we received 99 responses and now have information on the numbers of offers of place already issued to potential students. This has helped us match our resources to the predicted volume for the peak,” INZ National Manager Education and Tourism Jeannie Melville says.
“The queue of student applications from earlier this year has been cleared in Mumbai. Applications are now being allocated to an Immigration Officer for assessment within ten working days.”
Getting applications in early
INZ strongly recommends potential students continue to submit their applications as early as possible – at least eight weeks ahead of a person’s intended travel date.
However, applications can be submitted up to four months ahead of intended travel.
First time visa application checklist
There is now a checklist available to help people submitting a student visa application for the first time. It provides guidance on what they need to do to ensure they are submitting a decision-ready application, which should reduce the likelihood of it missing information.

From the Acting CE: Open for business – international education and the vocational reforms
I am therefore very pleased that Education New Zealand has the opportunity to contribute and support the work of the establishment unit for the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST) and the reforms.
The NZIST will bring together the existing 16 ITPs to create a unified, sustainable public network of vocational education.
As we all know, New Zealand enjoys a strong reputation for work-ready education and industry training.
The reforms should build on New Zealand’s reputation as a high-quality choice for international students. They should also help develop a strong national identity for the vocational sector, representing a significant opportunity for providers to attract overseas students.
They should also help ensure a regional spread of students across New Zealand, with a lot of benefits for the regions – including skills, diversity and revenue.
I’m also very pleased to see that the reforms recognise the importance of international education. One of the seven IST work streams focuses entirely on it.
The International Education Working Group is chaired by Michelle Jordan from Venture Taranaki. Members are drawn from across nine institutes of technology/polytechnics and one skills organisation.
We are working closely with the group to support their work. And we’ll continue to work with them through the journey to share our experience and expertise.
The NZIST has a huge challenge ahead. And the changes to the country’s vocational education system will take time to embed.
While there is much happening at the provider level, the message for the sector and international students is that it’s business as usual. ITPs are open for business. And ENZ is continuing to market them. Students can continue to enrol at ITPs for 2020 as usual, including for multi-year programmes. Existing programmes, qualifications and credentials will continue to be recognised internationally.
The changes will take time, but they are an investment in the future of New Zealand’s vocational education and international education sectors.

ENZ launches new tool to help students with visa application process
Developed as a resource for both students and education agents, the video guides students through the steps of applying for a visa to study in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The video, now available in English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai, offers students helpful tips to increase their chances of a successful visa application outcome.
As we near the October and March period when Immigration New Zealand (INZ) receives its highest volume of visa applications it is important that students not only apply early for their visa but also complete their application properly to ensure it is processed as quickly as possible. INZ recommends that students apply at least three months before their intended travel date to give them the best chance of having their application decided in time.
The visa videos are free to download from Brand Lab and can be used across the marketing channels of individual education providers. The English language version of the video is also publicly available on YouTube and on the Study with New Zealand website.

PIF Recipient: Virtual Medical Coaching
In the United States alone, approximately 800 women die each year during pregnancy and within 42 days after delivery. More than 60% of those deaths are believed to be preventable. In developing countries, the rate of pregnancy-related deaths is up to 300 times higher.
An important part of the solution is education. Globally, midwives are in high demand, with the UK’s NHS increasing their places for student midwives by 3000, starting this year. Australia is also planning to increase numbers, while in New Zealand, a funding boost will increase the number of Māori and Pacific students training in midwifery.
While the demand for midwifery training is growing, education offerings haven’t kept up. Childbirth is deeply personal, and feedback from mothers – validated by hospital staff – is that they do not wish to have extra staff or students in the room for training. With no effective opportunities for face-to-face learning, there is a global need for a realistic and scalable childbirth simulation.
That’s where Virtual Medical Coaching’s vision comes in, supported as a recipient of the International Education Product Innovation Fund. Virtual reality (VR) software will provide a safe and controlled environment for students to see and assist in childbirth simulations, both with and without complications and in a range of different scenarios. As the student improves, the simulations they encounter increase in difficulty. A machine-learning algorithm enables fast and accurate feedback to both the learner and any tutors.
The simulation will be interactive and responsive, meaning that any action taken by a student creates a life-like consequence and reaction. The outcome is that learners are taught to effectively make decisions and problem solve.
Existing options for midwifery training include a physical mannequin simulator, but this can be prohibitively expensive, out of reach of many training providers, and doesn’t offer students maximum learning hours. In addition, existing options don’t include the ability to witness mechanisms like rotations/restitutions or the ability to have back and forth conversations. By contrast, the VR simulation will be available to students wherever they are, and whenever they need to practice. The nature of the VR experience means that modern learning styles, such as asynchronous and remote learning, are well catered for.
With support from the International Education Product Innovation Fund, Virtual Medical Coaching’s childbirth simulation is on track to become fully released by the end of 2024. A beta-version is already used by some educators globally. The Product Innovation Fund is a New Zealand Government-funded initiative to reimagine what a New Zealand education can look like and mean for global learners.
Managed by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), New Zealand’s government agency for international education, the fund is supporting a range of pilot projects from existing and emerging New Zealand education providers. Together, the projects rethink how an education experience from New Zealand can be delivered, and create impact, for global learners.
For Virtual Medical Coaching, it’s about finding a better solution to a serious issue. Like many other innovative Kiwi education technology companies, Virtual Medical Coaching is designing technology that will create positive impact around the world. It’s already successfully developed an x-ray simulation for healthcare professionals which has won multiple national and international awards. Now, with the support of ENZ through the International Education Product Innovation Fund, Virtual Medical Coaching is set to respond to a clear need for better midwifery training options and develop another cutting-edge learning product for both New Zealand and offshore markets.

Refresh of ENZ Recognised Agency programme
The ENZ Recognised Agency is a programme focused on identifying and engaging with proven, committed and ethical education agencies. It was re-launched in late 2018.
ENZ is dedicated to increasing engagement with quality education agencies that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to promoting New Zealand as an international study destination and are successfully placing students at New Zealand education providers.
The Recognised Agency programme intends to allow ENZ to better, and more regularly, interact with high-quality education agents. While it is not a regulatory programme, it is anticipated that education providers and prospective students will have a higher level of confidence in the quality, expertise and commitment of a Recognised Agency.
