  • Innovative new search tool on SiNZ

Following feedback from New Zealand institutions, ENZ sought to offer better tools to institutions to tell their story on the site, with better search capabilities to help students find study options faster and more intuitively.

More than one million potential students visited SiNZ in 2017, with the website referring nearly 200,000 of them to New Zealand institutions.

Lucia Alarcon, ENZ’s International Digital Programme Manager, said by giving students a faster, more intuitive way to find study options, the innovative new search tool makes it easier for institutions to recruit high-quality international students.

“As well as providing better search listings for students, the new functionality offers institutions more advanced ways of telling their story such as improved photo galleries and separate profiles for their departments,” said Lucia.

“We now offer a powerful and comprehensive search tool to help students find the course or institutions they’re looking for, as well as offering industry more advanced features to promote their education institutions.”

    The key new features include:

    • A one-stop-shop profile for institutions to showcase their proposition, courses, scholarships and other key information
    • More visual content, with a better display of features and photos
    • Showcasing each campus separately, with words and photos
    • Separate profiles for each institution department
    • More contact details for each campus and department
    • Better search listings – listed alphabetically with filters to refine searches.

  • Education New Zealand launches Brand Protect 2.0 Campaign

On 23 November, ENZ will be launching a digital brand campaign informally known as ‘Brand Protect 2’.

This is a direct continuation of the Brand Protect campaign that ran July to August, and became our most successful brand awareness campaign to date. Research shows us that global sentiment towards New Zealand remains positive, so this is a key moment to leverage this attention to tell the education story in-market.

The new iteration will run in Indonesia, the UK, and Viet Nam from 23 November-23 December, with China following in January. Our campaign activity will be supported by a range of content on our own social media channels.

In addition to the content, a new landing page has been developed to further underline New Zealand education values and draw a connection between our global reputation and the strength of our education system. As well as this, audiences will be directed to explore their future study options on SINZ and join our social communities.

Please email brand@enz.govt.nz for all questions and enquiries, or speak to your ENZ representative.

  • South and South East Asia fair season off to flying start!

More Malaysian students studying in New Zealand this year

After a two-year hiatus ENZ successfully reintroduced the New Zealand Education Fair in to Malaysia to boost New Zealand’s profile in the market. Attracting almost 800 visitors, the fair was a marked success on the 2013 event which hosted around 100 visitors. With an overwhelming number of prospective students quickly filling the room, the ENZ team managed the influx by spontaneously hosting two “Studying in New Zealand” seminars outside the main function room.

The fair was well supported by New Zealand education institutions and had a strong NZ Inc flavour, being opened by New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Dr John Subritzky.

“Education is a critical part of our ever-growing relationship with Malaysia, and we are proud of our long history of providing education opportunities for Malaysians. It’s great to see more Malaysian students choosing New Zealand as their education destination, especially as this creates life-long connections between our two countries,” said Dr Subritzky.

A prize-giving ceremony for the winners of ENZ’s ‘Think New’ Essay Writing competition and the New Zealand Marketing Strategy competition was also held. As part of his prize, the winner of the marketing strategy competition, UCSI University student Eric Kong, arrived in New Zealand recently to start his four-week internship with the Choose New Zealand alliance. We’ll bring you an update on how Eric and the other competition winners are going in the next issue of E-News.

India’s events campaign leverages the Fleming brand

Fourteen events in 10 days – ENZ’s India team has been running on pure adrenalin to deliver a series of powerful promotional events in India and Sri Lanka, centred around the flagship fairs held across India last month.

As part of ENZ’s wider SSEA team, ENZ India is the second team in the region to hold its New Zealand Education Fairs for the August – October season. Leveraging the profile of New Zealand Education Brand Ambassador and international cricket legend Stephen Fleming has again been a successful approach in extending New Zealand’s reach into the vast student population in India.

ENZ India Country Manager, Jugnu Roy, worked closely with Stephen Fleming to make the most of his strong following.

“Stephen’s brand is New Zealand’s brand – it’s about integrity, about being open and about connecting across borders. Importantly, Stephen has also made it fundamentally about the value of a New Zealand education because he understands both what we are trying to achieve and also how much his New Zealand education helped his career.”

Using the New Zealand education fairs as the centre piece of New Zealand’s key promotional season in South Asia, the India team also delivered a series of related profile-raising activities including networking events, and round table sessions with close to 40 school principals from prominent secondary and international schools. Stephen also visited leading institutions, including top-ranked universities such as Delhi University and SRM University in Chennai where he addressed more than 2000 students. The immediate result of this visit was the flow of quality SRM students to the Chennai New Zealand Education Fair later that week.

The fairs themselves appealed to a good pool of potential quality students, attracting over 1200 students in total. With more than 25 prominent New Zealand institutions meeting prospective students at the fairs, the New Zealand value proposition was positively championed.

Sri Lanka has been an important market in the South Asia region, and ENZ introduced a ‘university only’ school roadshow for the first time to stimulate the market. The university representatives hadan opportunity to interact with secondary school students of two top international schools of this island country.

Overall, New Zealand’s promotional events in India and Sri Lanka in August reached over 7,000 people.

With New Zealand education fairs and associated events still to come in Thailand, Viet Nam and Indonesia, the SSEA team is continuing to ramp up fair fever across the region. They are always well-supported by Immigration New Zealand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and, of course, the all-important industry providers

“South Asia and South East Asia is an enormous region and it’s an important region for international education. Our team members from Indonesia right up to India are committed to providing first-class events to raise the profile of New Zealand. Fair season is an exceptionally busy time for us and we’re always focused on providing the best events we can for New Zealand’s institutions.” Said Ziena Jalil, ENZ’s Regional Director SSEA.

  • From the CE: International education in the spotlight

    Kia ora koutou,

I’ve recently returned to New Zealand following a productive visit to Viet Nam with the Prime Minister’s Trade Mission. It was highly encouraging to see international education front and centre of so many conversations. Beyond attracting Vietnamese students to New Zealand, the education relationship between our countries is evolving into deeper collaborations involving education institutions, businesses, and governments.

The visit also showcased outstanding examples of educational partnerships across the spectrum of New Zealand’s international education sector, from universities and private training establishments to EdTech companies, highlighting the breadth of collaboration opportunities.

Overall, the Mission was a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of New Zealand as a top-tier education destination offering a safe and welcoming environment

International education was also a component of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rt Hon Winston Peters’ official visit to China. As part of his programme, the Minister had a warm meeting with Chinese alumni of New Zealand universities. From the report back, it was clear that the New Zealand study experience had left the alumni with a lasting, positive impression.

Coming up in May, ENZ will be going into the field for the 2025 International Student Experience Survey. This survey covers a range of topics relevant to the sector, including student decision-making, arrival and orientation, the education experience, living experience, people and connections, and perceptions of value for money.

Last year’s survey had 86 percent of international students reporting a positive overall experience of their time in New Zealand, and 41 percent of students giving an ‘excellent’ rating, the highest percentage yet! In case you missed deep diving into specific aspects of the student experience, you can browse through them here.

I’ve started packing my bags again, as this weekend I will be joining the Prime Minister’s Trade Mission to India. I’ll be staying on for a further week in Delhi for APAIE 2025. I look forward to updating you in my next column.

  • Ask New Anything: ENZ's next global campaign

    I Am New Grid2

Launching in mid-October, ENZ’s global digital campaign 'Ask New Anything' is our most technically sophisticated campaign yet.

The 'Ask New Anything' campaign aims to challenge commonly held perceptions of New Zealand and increase awareness of the country as a high-quality study destination. It does this in a new and innovative way – by inviting audiences in 14 international markets to question what they know about New Zealand.

'Ask New Anything' will be the first time the refreshed 'Think New' brand has been widely used in digital channels. To read more about ‘I AM NEW’, see the E-News story ‘A brand NEW day’

The campaign brings together ENZ’s digital insights, the refreshed brand and the Study in New Zealand chatbot Tohu, to give prospective students the answers they need to make an informed study decision.

    The creative concept

Drawing on Google search data, China-specific insights and data from Tohu, we’ve pulled together a list of the most commonly searched questions about studying in New Zealand.

We put these questions to real international students, a New Zealand student, a teacher, a parent and an employer and recorded their responses in 100 unscripted videos.

As well as being used on YouTube, Facebook and other digital media, the videos will be available on demand in Tohu the chatbot (who can be found on the studyinnewzealand.govt.nz website, the NauMai NZ website and Facebook Messenger).

If asked a question it cannot answer, Tohu will direct prospective students to a new Facebook group or Instagram Live event, where they can ask current international students their questions in real time, delivering on the promise that you can 'Ask New Anything'.

In China, the campaign  will use the most relevant questions for the market within WeChat and other local platforms.

ENZ Director Platforms and Campaigns, Euan Howden, says: “Harnessing our award-winning data and marketing platform, we're bringing the refreshed 'Think New' brand to life with a level of technical sophistication that we couldn't have dreamed of a year ago. I'm looking forward to seeing how audiences engage with this campaign, and how this affects their perceptions of New Zealand as their preferred study destination.”

    Introducing the new brand

The campaign will be the first global digital showcase of the refreshed 'Think New' brand which  positions our international education brand for success and defines quality by the ways we help students make their mark on the world. Additionally, the campaign captures New Zealand’s values of societal openness, transparency and manaakitanga.

ENZ Director Brand and Design, Kaylee Butters, says: “This is the most interactive campaign we’ve run to date. The involvement of our Kiwi Ambassadors and the direct connections enabled by the Facebook group and Instagram Live events really underpins the authenticity of the brand and puts our students right at the heart of the creative concept.”

  • Engaging personally in Viet Nam

People generally seem tired of online meetings and webinars, preferring to meet and attend events in person. In recognition of this trend, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has actively engaged with different stakeholders in recent months, to maintain our in-market promotion and explore new opportunities for New Zealand providers.

A workshop for counsellors from private and international schools to connect with recruitment representatives from NZ universities.

In late June, ENZ organised workshops to help connect recruitment representatives from New Zealand universities with selected counsellors from private and international schools in Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi. At the workshops, we asked about Vietnamese students’ current attitudes towards a New Zealand education, discussed the opportunities and challenges for each New Zealand provider, and identified any topics they wanted to explore further.

ENZ and in-market representatives of some New Zealand providers have also participated recently in commercial fairs, organised by key education agencies in Viet Nam. These fairs look and feel just like they did in the past, with multiple booths for institutions from various countries, and high numbers of students and parents coming to talk directly with recruitment staff.

As New Zealand reopens the border for international students, it is critical we communicate directly with students and partners that we welcome students coming to study here. We are looking forward to the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City - Agent Seminar and New Zealand Fair in late October.
